Put it this way. My sister for a long time struggled (and to a degree, still struggles today) with body dysmorphia. She was very underweight but saw an obese person in the mirror. She identified with that. Now, would you encourage her to continue to restrict calories and affirm her perception and disconnect from reality? No. You help her to connect with reality and accept and be comfortable with reality. You get her counselling. You deal with past traumas. And you continue to be a voice of truth whether she wants to believe it or not.
That's because the effect to her was harmful. There is no harm caused to the person who is trans. Also, "dysmorphia" is a mental illness, body dysmorphia is the obsessive focus on her body. If she saw herself as fat and she was happy with that and accepted it then there wouldn't be a dysmorphia. Just like gender dysmorphia (the discomfort between misalignment of psychological gender and biological sex) has 2 cures: change your psychological gender or change your appearance to match your psychological gender. Imagine if people attacked your sister online and mocked her and others like her relentlessly for how she saw herself? Would you participate in that?
This is the exact same example I use when debating this topic and get slated for it. My reasoning is that its difficult to be objective and rational with a subject you are emotionally attached to so if you take the premise/fundamental principles of the argument and apply them to a slightly different subject you can be more objective and the principles should hold firm if valid. I had a close friend who died from an eating disorder so I personally witnessed her struggle. She was 5 stone and believed she was obese, that's who she saw in the mirror and identified as. If you apply the same reasoning and rationale from gender ideology then she should have been treated as obese by her doctor and been allowed to request diet pills, get a gastric band fitted or get stomach staple surgery etc??? Of course not!

Frank did a good job differentiating between intersex and gender dysphoria, but I think he could have done better getting her to stop conflating the two. Her assumption was that all transgender people must be intersex. This gets unexamined in a lot of debates.

Doesn't the movement differentiate between the two? If there's a reason for that, isn't your argument guilty of Trans erasure? 2. If someone is seeking gender affirming treatment and is biologically intersex, we have areas of agreement as to what appropriate treatment looks like. 3. Conservatives are concerned with Trans and Intersex people getting a reasonable place in society that creates healing and not excuses or unearned praise. 4. Lots of people have false and persistent beliefs about their body and automatically affirming their belief is not good for them (for example with anorexia and bulimia or with Munchausen's) and affirming beliefs and providing treatment based on that does those people harm. I could go on. But yes, I do think narratively speaking it is important to make liberals differentiate between Trans and Intersex whenever possible.

As a mom of a son who had ambiguous genitalia I was confronted by a doctor about raising him as a female. (I new he was a male by the sex test I had when I was pregnant that I was having a son). He had the surgeries to give him male genitalia. He has grown up as is truely male. What if I did the female surgeries on him? even though I knew he had male chromosomes. He would be trans. You base your decisions when regarding sex of yourself or baby by the chromosomes not by looks only if there is a problem. Which does not happen often. It is a mental state most trans people.

I grew up with gender dyphoria and I am 51 yr old this year and it was only in 2018 that I ever heard the term "trans women are women". I never questioned my "gender" even though I wanted to be a girl, I knew that was NOT a possibility and pretending or calling myself a woman would be insincere appropriation because there are so many biological experiences a woman goes through that I would never go through. It would be selfish to call myself a woman.

Her argument is inherently flawed because we are not talking about people with intersex birth defects. We are talking about people who are born without such issues, and thus are either a man, or a woman, and cannot change that. Intersex people do not choose to have an intersex birth defect, and we cannot choose which sex we are either. (EDIT: Also, many intersex birth defects, such as men with breasts or females with the wrong private parts, do not make them any less of a man or woman, as Dr. Turek pointed out. Its just a birth defect.)

But the sky is NOT inherently blue, you see it as blue and most people do, but blue is a human concept (try to explain it to a blind person), the perception of colors is subjective (as we are all different) and science explains how it appears blue from the atmosphere absorbing certain wave lengths of the white light from the sun. The sky being blue is a social construct, like we made the genders and stuff. You can't say to a color blind (or a blind person) to look at the sky as evidence for it being blue. A human is a member of the species, homo sapiens. A female is someone whose reproductive anatomy working as it should or not doesnt matter, is organized around development of the production of small gametes or eggs We have a set list of what a man or woman is. From your DNA, bones, chromosome, genitals, reproduction capability, ect. You are male or female, there is no 3rd pick. Your body will lean more towards one of the 2 genders. Whatever that is, is the gender that you are. By the scientific/ biology definition, we have on woman and man. This is a Q&A for college students (typically professionals would be at work not at a student Q&A)... #4. Her manner of speaking, reasoning, and interaction is younger (the older you get, the bigger the difference)... #5. As a long-time human behaviour researcher, educator, and behavioural scientist, I am somewhat privy to her presented knowledge level not quite being at the 'professional' level in a field of study. If these are reasonable observations, would you say it's also reasonable she's being dishonest in presenting herself as a professional biologist? So to reiterate my original point, it would've been better for her to not conflate her opinion and status because it defeated her argument. A better (and more effective) start would've been something like: "Dear Fank, I'm like you, I'm not a professional biologist, but I've also put some thought and reading into this subject and my conclusion leads me to believe....x, y, z". Now Frank can dispute her knowledge, her experience, he can try and invalidate what she knows, BUT, because she came into the discussion with humility (by acknowledging herself as a student, with some knowledge and the beginnings of an informed opinion), it puts HIM in the position of having to be careful of not conflating because the audience will be subconsciously evaluating how he approaches her humility (will he conflate? will he reciprocate? will he seek to learn her perspective more? ...etc) I know this doesn't satisfy the ''Watch me teach this guy a lesson because my opinions are good enough to prove he's wrong and I'm right!" side of our personalities. But it is more effective and leads to a better result. I think this video clearly demonstrates an important part of Christian apologetics: to give a defense for the faith with gentleness and respect. Not only is Frank Turek a brilliant man who is always prepared for giving an answer, but he is also considerate to other people, however much they disagree with him. We are never going to persuade anyone by getting angry or insulting them, but we have some sort of a chance by treating them as (if not friends) fellow human beings. Honestly, Frank's approach to apologetics is probably the best I've seen. Yes, there are times for turning the tables (as Christ himself modeled), but in those cases, it's the destructive issues we should be angry at, not the individual person.
The key in apologetics is that it NEVER convinces anyone into God's Kingdom; apologetics gives reasonable reasons for the Faith we present. Paul says it clearly in 2 Cor 4:4. Also, 1 Cor 2 Paul expands that the one that plants the seed of the gospel and the that other that waters it with prayers, are nothing. But God, the Holy Spirit, is the One that gives it growth. (Romans 1:16, 17)

To respond properly I needed a refresher. Although she didn't actually state a lie in her argument per se - In fact her statements about biology are accurate. My gripe was that she was using her status as biologist (albeit a student) as though it had anything to do with the trans argument, which is actually a psychological matter in most cases. She also seemed to be alluding that anomalies like intersex or ambiguous sex or genetic anomalies are playing a much bigger part in the argument than they really do. It's disingenuous to site biological facts and then make the leap that therefore someone can just decide their gender when there was no real connection between the two subjects. She also fails to include the fact that sex is not just determined by XX or XY but actually more so by whether the person is biologically geared for producing large gametes or small gametes. These are just asides. The conclusion as to why I made the initial remark is because she thought that stating she was a biologist somehow lent weight to her argument when in fact it has nothing to do with it. Sex and gender are separate things. She was speaking as an activist. You can be a trans woman but it doesn't make you a woman. Her whole argument to chop off normal sex organs is a rare genetic disorder that is guessed to be 1 in 80,ooo. In the rare outliers of people who have valid physical disorders, you do what you can for them. I had this discussion with my girlfriend who is a qualified nurse. In the conversation, she mentioned that those who are recognised as intersex are born with both male and female gonads or sometimes both x and xy chromosomes. But they will be predominantly one gender more than the other. Meaning they can have a fully functioning female reproductive system and have male gonads ( usually tucked up in the tummy) that don't work. It's discibed in the medical industry as an abnormality in the genealogical code during pregnancy. Even if they want to change sex from female to male. Their gonads were none producing from the beginning. Hence they are predominantly one sex over the other. What we are dealing with is more of a psychological problem before biological.

My mom was a tomboy growing up. She hated all "girly" things and prefered to run with the boys and my grandparents more or less raised her as a boy. My grandparents, being the sane people that they were, knew she'd grow out of it and she did. I can't imagine what it would have been like for her if she were raised now. She'd probably have groomers trying to convince her to have hormone therapy and a sex change operation at age 8.

From your DNA, bones, chromosome, genitals, reproduction capability, ect. You are male or female, there is no 3rd pick. Your body will lean more towards one of the 2 genders. Whatever that is, is the gender that you are. By the scientific/ biology definition, we have on woman and man. Just cause nature has freak accidents or isnt working as it should, to give you that 100% perfect scientific definiton doesn't mean you are any less of that gender. If a woman cant have babies, she is still a woman. If you fit 80% of the scientific/biology definition of what a woman is and only 5% of man? I'm going to say you're a woman. Some people are born with less or more limb. Example we still say humans have 10 fingers. If your argument is for a perfect definition to fit all, in an all-inclusive definition. There is no such thing and never will be in any language. Put it this way. My sister for a long time struggled (and to a degree, still struggles today) with body dysmorphia. She was very underweight but saw an obese person in the mirror. She identified with that. Now, would you encourage her to continue to restrict calories and affirm her perception and disconnect from reality? No. You help her to connect with reality and accept and be comfortable with reality. You get her counselling. You deal with past traumas. And you continue to be a voice of truth whether she wants to believe it or not.
If a therapist does that these days they will loose their license to practice.
That's because the effect to her was harmful. There is no harm caused to the person who is trans.
Also, "dysmorphia" is a mental illness, body dysmorphia is the obsessive focus on her body. If she saw herself as fat and she was happy with that and accepted it then there wouldn't be a dysmorphia.
Just like gender dysmorphia (the discomfort between misalignment of psychological gender and biological sex) has 2 cures: change your psychological gender or change your appearance to match your psychological gender.
Imagine if people attacked your sister online and mocked her and others like her relentlessly for how she saw herself? Would you participate in that?

This is the exact same example I use when debating this topic and get slated for it. My reasoning is that its difficult to be objective and rational with a subject you are emotionally attached to so if you take the premise/fundamental principles of the argument and apply them to a slightly different subject you can be more objective and the principles should hold firm if valid. I had a close friend who died from an eating disorder so I personally witnessed her struggle. She was 5 stone and believed she was obese, that's who she saw in the mirror and identified as. If you apply the same reasoning and rationale from gender ideology then she should have been treated as obese by her doctor and been allowed to request diet pills, get a gastric band fitted or get stomach staple surgery etc??? Of course not!

Frank did a good job differentiating between intersex and gender dysphoria, but I think he could have done better getting her to stop conflating the two. Her assumption was that all transgender people must be intersex. This gets unexamined in a lot of debates.

1. Doesn't the movement differentiate between the two? If there's a reason for that, isn't your argument guilty of Trans erasure?
2. If someone is seeking gender affirming treatment and is biologically intersex, we have areas of agreement as to what appropriate treatment looks like.
3. Conservatives are concerned with Trans and Intersex people getting a reasonable place in society that creates healing and not excuses or unearned praise.
4. Lots of people have false and persistent beliefs about their body and automatically affirming their belief is not good for them (for example with anorexia and bulimia or with Munchausen's) and affirming beliefs and providing treatment based on that does those people harm.
I could go on. But yes, I do think narratively speaking it is important to make liberals differentiate between Trans and Intersex whenever possible.

As a mom of a son who had ambiguous genitalia I was confronted by a doctor about raising him as a female. (I new he was a male by the sex test I had when I was pregnant that I was having a son). He had the surgeries to give him male genitalia. He has grown up as is truely male. What if I did the female surgeries on him? even though I knew he had male chromosomes. He would be trans. You base your decisions when regarding sex of yourself or baby by the chromosomes not by looks only if there is a problem. Which does not happen often. It is a mental state most trans people.
Chromosomes are not what determine if your male or female They are simply one of many factors that determine if your male or female another factor is neurology with transgender individuals which your son was in your body because there was a mismatch between the genitalia the chromosomes and probably the neurology because if your son was raised normally then he's probably neurologically male

So he had surgery to remove the offending component and bring his body in congruity to his neurological sex Man

Her argument is inherently flawed because we are not talking about people with intersex birth defects. We are talking about people who are born without such issues, and thus are either a man, or a woman, and cannot change that. Intersex people do not choose to have an intersex birth defect, and we cannot choose which sex we are either.
(EDIT: Also, many intersex birth defects, such as men with breasts or females with the wrong private parts, do not make them any less of a man or woman, as Dr. Turek pointed out. Its just a birth defect.)
But her point is where do we draw the line... No one would have a problem with intersex people having surgery or "choosing" their gender. But why are people with gender dyshoria not given the same liberty...?

But the sky is NOT inherently blue, you see it as blue and most people do, but blue is a human concept (try to explain it to a blind person), the perception of colors is subjective (as we are all different) and science explains how it appears blue from the atmosphere absorbing certain wave lengths of the white light from the sun.

We have a set list of what a man or woman is. From your DNA, bones, chromosome, genitals, reproduction capability, ect. You are male or female, there is no 3rd pick. Your body will lean more towards one of the 2 genders. Whatever that is, is the gender that you are. By the scientific/ biology definition, we have on woman and man.

If these are reasonable observations, would you say it's also reasonable she's being dishonest in presenting herself as a professional biologist? So to reiterate my original point, it would've been better for her to not conflate her opinion and status because it defeated her argument. A better (and more effective) start would've been something like: "Dear Fank, I'm like you, I'm not a professional biologist, but I've also put some thought and reading into this subject and my conclusion leads me to believe....x, y, z". Now Frank can dispute her knowledge, her experience, he can try and invalidate what she knows, BUT, because she came into the discussion with humility (by acknowledging herself as a student, with some knowledge and the beginnings of an informed opinion), it puts HIM in the position of having to be careful of not conflating because the audience will be subconsciously evaluating how he approaches her humility (will he conflate? will he reciprocate? will he seek to learn her perspective more? ...etc)
I know this doesn't satisfy the ''Watch me teach this guy a lesson because my opinions are good enough to prove he's wrong and I'm right!" side of our personalities. But it is more effective and leads to a better result. I think this video clearly demonstrates an important part of Christian apologetics: to give a defense for the faith with gentleness and respect. Not only is Frank Turek a brilliant man who is always prepared for giving an answer, but he is also considerate to other people, however much they disagree with him. We are never going to persuade anyone by getting angry or insulting them, but we have some sort of a chance by treating them as (if not friends) fellow human beings. Honestly, Frank's approach to apologetics is probably the best I've seen. Yes, there are times for turning the tables (as Christ himself modeled), but in those cases, it's the destructive issues we should be angry at, not the individual person.
The key in apologetics is that it NEVER convinces anyone into God's Kingdom; apologetics gives reasonable reasons for the Faith we present. Paul says it clearly in 2 Cor 4:4. Also, 1 Cor 2 Paul expands that the one that plants the seed of the gospel and the that other that waters it with prayers, are nothing. But God, the Holy Spirit, is the One that gives it growth. (Romans 1:16, 17)

Although she didn't actually state a lie in her argument per se - In fact her statements about biology are accurate. My gripe was that she was using her status as biologist (albeit a student) as though it had anything to do with the trans argument, which is actually a psychological matter in most cases.
She also seemed to be alluding that anomalies like intersex or ambiguous sex or genetic anomalies are playing a much bigger part in the argument than they really do.
It's disingenuous to site biological facts and then make the leap that therefore someone can just decide their gender when there was no real connection between the two subjects. She also fails to include the fact that sex is not just determined by XX or XY but actually more so by whether the person is biologically geared for producing large gametes or small gametes.
These are just asides. The conclusion as to why I made the initial remark is because she thought that stating she was a biologist somehow lent weight to her argument when in fact it has nothing to do with it. Sex and gender are separate things. She was speaking as an activist.

Respectfully, you seem to be implying, and please correct me if I am wrong; that biology as nothing to do with psychology. I had this discussion with my girlfriend who is a qualified nurse.
In the conversation, she mentioned that those who are recognised as intersex are born with both male and female gonads or sometimes both x and xy chromosomes.
But they will be predominantly one gender more than the other. Meaning they can have a fully functioning female reproductive system and have male gonads ( usually tucked up in the tummy) that don't work. It's discibed in the medical industry as an abnormality in the genealogical code during pregnancy.
Even if they want to change sex from female to male. Their gonads were none producing from the beginning. Hence they are predominantly one sex over the other.
What we are dealing with is more of a psychological problem before biological.

My mom was a tomboy growing up. She hated all "girly" things and prefered to run with the boys and my grandparents more or less raised her as a boy. My grandparents, being the sane people that they were, knew she'd grow out of it and she did. I can't imagine what it would have been like for her if she were raised now. She'd probably have groomers trying to convince her to have hormone therapy and a sex change operation at age 8.

A human is a member of the species, homo sapiens. We have a set list of what a man or woman is. From your DNA, bones, chromosome, genitals, reproduction capability, ect. You are male or female, there is no 3rd pick. Some of those are much more important than others and one thing that is irrelevent is feelings/belief. Feelings/belief isnt truth, isnt facts, and isnt scientific. Your body will lean more towards one of the 2 genders. Whatever that is, is the gender that you are. By the scientific/ biology definition, we have on woman and man.
Just cause nature has freak accidents or isnt working as it should, to give you that 100% perfect scientific definiton doesn't mean you are any less of that gender. If a woman cant have babies, she is still a woman. If you fit 80% of the scientific/biology definition of what a woman is and only 5% of man? I'm going to say you're a woman. Some people are born with less or more limb. Example we still say humans have 10 fingers. If your argument is for a perfect definition to fit all, in an all-inclusive definition. There is no such thing and never will be in any language. With your argument we would lose the definition of what a human is cause there are freak accidents in nature/growth/development/evolusion that go against what the definition of what a human is. Then we will have a domino effect and can change all words to where no one will know what you are saying. Because what you think a word means could mean differently to someone else based on feelings. If you were born with a penis you're a man, if you were born with a vagina you're a woman. Only in rare occasions are you born with both or neither. How you feel has nothing to do with it.

This is ridiculous! If someone you loved believed the toaster was talking to them you wouldn’t try to convince them that they were right and that you could hear the voices too. Nor would you attempt to force everyone else to pretend they heard their toaster talking to them. You would get your loved one the psychological help they desperately needed. These poor people aren’t being helped at all. People are playing into their problem and forcing others to play into it as well. It’s incredibly sad and dangerous.
