I liked the old look more. But I look at it more in real life than a side profile photo online, and I think a lot of the styling is only appreciated in person. I also much preferred the V2 generation colors over the subdued new tones, but I ride where it's muddy. Around here, brighter, more solid colored bikes look much cleaner after going through the puddles.
@@JeffKendallWeed You nailed it. So many haters look at the bike in online pics and never see it IRL. They also have no intention of buying one but still need to comment on the top tube XD. If you see the v4 ripley/v2 ripmo from a standing angle, they look great.
Thank you for saying the quiet part out loud...same exact frame for Ripley V5 and Ripmo V3 just different linkage parts. Some will think that it's cool to be able to have 2 bikes in 1, but I doubt very many people will switch around between the two configurations and reality is that it's a compromise and cost savings measure by Ibis. Going to be tough to build up a lightweight Ripley with a frame that weighs about 2 pounds more than the V4.
Jeff: Incredible reviews of both the Ripley and Ripmo .... superb narrative, filming, editing, etc. Not sure how you did both so fast with such excellent quality, but Kudos to you and your team! I also appreciated your comments at the end on the Ripley vs. Ripmo choice you'd make. Given the type riding you do (aggressive, playful, high speed) I was pleasantly surprised you chose the Ripley. At age 77, my choice for sure would be the Ripley. Oh wait, I have the v4 and love it! 😊More than meets my limited skills and makes me smile each time I ride it. Rule #1 is FUN!!
I prefer the look of my "Bug Zapper" blue V2. I've got many compliments on what a beautiful bike it is . I also like the old frame on what I call that horseshoe component on the upper rear triangle. Makes it so distinct out there on the trail from everything else. I think the new version Ripmo looks like the Yeti SB140, especially the purple.
Yah but by all accounts it doesn't ride as well. Looks are nice to have, but should always be a secondary concern. If I cared about looks I wouldn't consider Ibis bikes in the first place.
New generation doesn't mean better, just different. Your bike is perfect and lovely, don't ever feel pressure to get rid of it just because there's a different model out now.
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the note! I love the shapes of the old bike in real life. On the internet, where a sideways profile photo is king, the new bike definitely looks sharper. IRL, the new design is definitely nice, but it's not as unique as the outgoing. I preferred the brighter colors of the older V2 version (bright blue, and light brown, both glossy), but that's just me. I think in 5 years, the old V2 and V1 bikes will look pretty old, where as the new V3 shape will be more current and will hold more staying power.
Appreciate your honest take on the Ripmo vs. Ripley, especially since you have so much history with various Ibis models. I had a Mojo HD and loved the 160mm travel, then went to a Ripley V4 for the better climbing (as I get older), but missed the big travel. Was convinced I'd go back to the newest Ripmo V3 when it came out, but may now stick with the Ripley V5 instead. Thanks (from SLO)!
Ibis are killing it these days with respect to geo and builds. I loved my HD4 and my current v2 Ripmo is amazing and easily the best bike I have ever ridden .
Thanks for doing the Ripley video at the same time! I have had 6 ibis bikes all the way back to a steel mojo, and will always have at least one in my quiver. Thinking of replacing my v1 Ripmo frame (has a -1 angleset) with this frame, but really a toss up now between the Ripley and Ripmo. Rocky nasty local trails have me thinking Ripmo will be the way to go. I like seeing the beefy 36 down there when I run out of talent or get surprised by rocks coming right at me.
As a shorter guy who likes to be able to stand over the bike without hitting the giblets, I love the new frame design. Well done Ibis. The Ripmo is now on my shortlist for next bike.
I got to get that bike. I looks awesome. I will hit up Jenson when they have a bunch in stock. Jenson is now my go to mountain bike shop thanks to Jeff. Jenson really is a great company run by good people.
Great review! Nice bike but I also prefer the beast that the V2 will always be. People can hate on the top tube but it was part of the Ibis identity. Love my Ripmo V2!

Ironically enough, the new bike is built in a very different manner, molding the shaft directly in, rather than bonding as they did on the older bikes (like HD4). Selfishly im glad it doesn't seem like thet much of an aimprovement on the v2. Because i really like my V2, normally I get tired of a bike after two years, but I have no complaints
It's very much different- for some folks, it's a no brainer to swap to the V3, but for plenty, the V2s is already SO GOOD that there is no rush to upgrade. I really liked the old bike, it was a little more bomber and beefy. But I also had 4.5 years experience dialing it in... The new platform is gonna be great, but it'll take some time to find the sweet spot!
@@JeffKendallWeed my only complaint with the V2 is my setup is a little heavy for a carbon bike. Ride in Pisgah so long steep climbs. But my setup favors durability over weight
Ripmo V2 is not heavy! It's a super light rig. Nothin out there will be significantly lighter without being either shorter travel or extremely delicate.
Hey Jeff Id love to see a new rocky mtn instinct review, as there are almost none on youtube. It would be great to see it compared to the new ripmo and other bikes you mentioned. Cheers!
I have a 2023 Instinct after 20+ years on Spesh Stumpys and Enduros and it is a better bike. The attention to detail is top notch, and it corners like crazy.
I'm jonesing hard to ride that new Instinct! Still rocking that new Altitude quite a bit- such a good rig! Yeah Rocky Mtn is hugely under the radar in the USA. They really have a good thing going up there. Thanks for the note!
@@JeffKendallWeed I'm also very interested in a the latest Instinct review. Got a 21 Altitude, but was looking for something more playful and pedal friendly. Considering buying a new Instinct frame for the next season
In regards to your mentioning questions about shocks. I was wondering how you think a rockshox vivid would suit this? And also you mentioned it may suit upping larger shock and fork, do you just mean in travel? do you think 38s would unbalance this bike? Thanks
Would also love a comparison to the new stumpy. I own the 23 evo and my son the v2 ripmo, so curious on that comparison. As for in-bike storage, I'll likely never go back to a bike without it. The feeling of riding with nothing on your back is worth the hassle of digging stuff out.
Thought it was just me that dislikes frame storage. Seems like an unnecessary item to fail, rattle and provides minimal utility. I’m glad brands like Yeti hasn’t jumped on this bandwagon yet, but will likely follow suit.
I've never had any issues with rattles on my SC HTv3. I'm able to fit everything I need for a 3hr ride in the frame storage including a micro water filter (I strap a spare tube to my frame to free up internal storage). I love riding without a pack/hip pack on. I felt the same about internal storage until i started to really take advantage of it. It's such a fantastic feature to have on longer travel bikes.
I took a chance and ordered the V3 a few weeks ago on limited information after I couldn’t get my hands on a V2S. I’m pretty stoked at all of the options to really dial things in. I’ve been wanting to try the DVO JadeX for a while, I’m curious how that would work.
Interesting why wouldn’t you have compared it directly to the yeti sb 140? You mentioned the frame compliance, but that was really it. I’m eight months in on the yeti and don’t have any real complaints, but I have always considered myself an ibis fanboy. What was your thoughts compared to the yeti overall?
What you don’t like about sb140? Currently own RipleyAF and i’m torn getting V5 Deore or sb140 C2 cause I’m looking for a little more travel.. With yeti special right it’s 250$ +tax cheaper getting sb140.. BUT i so love my ripley af!
@@j-b776 I love my yeti. it has some compliance/flex built into the frame, but it’s very controllable. A lot of people will disagree with me, but I sort of feel like the yeti is the long legged trail bike more so than a light duty Enduro bike/all mountain. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It definitely still wants to go fast, but it is a very good jumping bike as well. I’m just the type of guy that trades bikes every six months that’s the only reason I’m looking at the next new bright and shiny thing. If you go with the yeti, you’ll love it.
I don't want to say this is the exact bike I wanted Ibis to make and seems absolutely perfect for me, but that is exactly what I'm saying. Looks like the Banshee might be getting retried.
Not yet! I need to reach out to Rock Shox to get one in, but I've been so focused on trying new bikes that I've let suspension stuff fall off the wayside...
The riding in this review is absolutely STUNNING! 🙌🏽

Congrats Dan! You'll be stoked on the new rig!!!
Agree, the storage compartment is a horrible trend.
I prefer the curves of the V2S. I get it’s polarizing but this bike just looks generic now
Any comments on Ripmo vs Yeti SB140 for comparison?
Is there any talk of an alloy frame option for the ripmo?
My new ripmo af arrives tomorrow.. 😅 I guess it’s time to start saving for the AF frame when it comes out. I will never go carbon..
You got a GREAT deal on it tho!!!
Yay Rocco!
Hahahaha right on! This bike answers a LOT of the requests folks had for an update!
Have you tried the Rockshox Vivid Air on anything yet? Also yes to more Rocco cameos
Not yet! I need to reach out to Rock Shox to get one in, but I've been so focused on trying new bikes that I've let suspension stuff fall off the wayside...
@@JeffKendallWeed Trying a Vivid 65mm stroke would be interesting.
