Just picked up a 2024 SB140 LR, upgraded from a Chromag Rootdown. I am 40, and have ridden HTs my entire life so I imagine this is going to be a game changer for me. I love the Chromag, but it wasn't the easiest bike to live with daily on less steep technical trails. Thanks for the video - you make every bike dance and it's a joy to watch!

On my third season of a v2 Switchblade, but I've changed nearly everything for my riding style. Cascade link, Super Deluxe ultimate coil and a Zeb (Still 160mm). It's still a very good peddler, rarely use the climb switch. But with the increase progression, coil and larger fork it is a lot more chargy while maintaining the nimble nature provided by the short stays. I love narrow, steep technical descents and this bike will do it while still coming in less than 35 lbs with pedals and tool aboard.
Please don't ask how much I've spent getting it there.😅

Very much appreciate your reviews and the fact that you're swapping out parts! Too many reviews just deal with the stock parts as provided and the bike review often suffers because of a poor part spec. Most of the riders I know do the same thing, so it makes sense - especially since a handlebar or tire swap is a relatively inexpensive change when you've already spent $5k on a new bike.

  • @ref498

I would be really interested to see one of these for an "aggressive xc bike" category. Something like a Transition Spur, a Rocky Mountain Element ext. I have an Enduro, and a trail bike seems too redundant especially when there are such capable "XC" bikes out there.

Hi Evo riders, so Jeff switched to the mullet Cascade Link with a 29er wheel, slackened the head tube angle probably to 63.5 degrees and added a big volume reducer to the shock to make it more progressive - right? If the mullet link is used with 29er wheel will it hit the frame/seat on bottom out? I ride a stock Stumpy Evo but I always enjoy tinkering and this sounds like a lot of tinkering.

Enduro vs trail is a an interesting distinction. I would argue that the stumpy evo is the most enduro of any of the trail bikes tested here and has actually won Edr races. These long travel bikes are getting so versatile and travel may not always be the best way to chop up these segments. The new switchblade and the stumpy evo feel a lot farther apart then the evo and the firebird.

I have the SJ Evo Alloy full custom w/ Cascade link on a coil (157mm) and it’s very different feeling than my equivalent built Hightower which has nearly identical geo. I’d say it falls into the “All-mountain” category, but still climbs better than my T429 with Ohlins on a Xynotal.

    • @Chorge1972
      @Chorge1972 2 місяці тому +1

That‘s why I love my „old“ 2021 switchblade! I think it’s more spotOn than the newest iteration! The older model was way more playful to ride, although the geo was tweaked only minimal… Yes, the headAngle of my Switchblade seems to be quite steep with its 66° - but it does feel much slacker! Only change I made: switched to DVO JadeX -> incredible effective on long touring uphills with 1000m and more of climbing, and ultra supple and plush in the DH then, without loosing the playfullness of the bike!
Tried the new switchblade - and really think, it’s not that good any more! It wants to be a small Firebird - but: when I want an Enduro, I buy one!!! When I want a Trailbike, I really want the TRAILbike (like the 2021 Switchblade was).

I can't wait for JKW to get his hands on that new Stumpy, especially if he fully plays with the mixed wheel link and potential adjustments to the bike here and there whether its more travel or head angle or whatever he wants. That thing absolutely GOES. One of the most balanced trail bikes in the industry right now, and I never really considered the old Stumpy or Stumpy EVO to actually fill that role. Always seemed like a compromise to one way or the other. The new Epic EVO is a great short travel trail bike as well. But the Stumpy is basically perfect...

My first real MTB a few years ago was a v1 Hightower, I then went to a v1 Megatower and now have a v2 Megatower, but I've always wanted to check out a v3 Hightower for some general trail riding here in Phoenix. I have an Orbea Wild for the big enduro stuff. Also interesting to hear how much you like the SB140, I have yet to ride a Yeti but I keep hearing good things about them especially when you're in race mode. I’ve been off a full suspension bike for 8 years and enjoying the trend of more trail oriented hardtail’s paired with extra wide rims, wide CushCore and durable casing 2.6” tires. I completely agree that 4 pod Shimano XT is my favorite. I’ve ever modified with Flo Sports Pro120 lever. Plus my geared bikes(I like SS MTBs) I use only Shimano and just feel it’s easier to set up and stay dialed-in, just like the brakes.
Anyway, I love your channel and have been thinking about a full squishy but would really love to see your perspective on “Trail Hardtail’s” Let’s face it, the Geo is more aggressive than many “Trail” category full suspension bikes. BTW, I’m in SoCal, North of LA with steep climbs and managing steep loose exposed descents. I’m 5’6” 150# and not nearly as fast as you. I just like to clean tech and stay clipped in.

I just got the Stumpjumper 15 Expert a few days ago. Loving it so far! Would be interested to see what you think. That dual stage air spring changes the game somewhat. No need for progressive linkage if your shock prevents bottom out by design. My experience so far is that it works very well. I haven't bottomed out and yet the shock feels super plush but then on the flipside when I push into the bike to pump or pop you quickly push through that 40% (30% sag, 40% travel and then 30% ramp up at the end of stroke) and into the firm support at the bottom. I haven't played with the outer can volume spacers yet, still just getting used to the bike as it comes from the factory.

Always enjoy your reviews and riding. Last oct I purchased a 22 SJ Evo Alloy frameset and built it up as a 27.5 to begin with. Ridiculously low BB, but it handled so good. I've since bought the Specialized mullet link, a 38 PE (160mm), and Halo Ridge Line 29er wheel. I don't have eons of experience on various bikes, but I am extremely satisified with what I've put together. That said, it pedals slower than the movement of pond water. That's why nobody likes to hike-a-bike, er I mean, ride with me haha!

Trail bikes are so good these days. You can’t really go wrong with any of these bikes. Unless you’re a reviewer focusing on the slight differences you won’t really notice the difference in 1mm longer chain stay or .5° steeper head angle. I prefer pivot cycles overall to anything I've ridden. I think the appreciation for pedal efficiency is lost on many and not emphasized enough in this review. I've always hated climbing until I jumped on dw link and Pivot bikes. But unless u spend all your time shuttling or at the lift, you will have to pedal up to go down. The Fuel exE I have currently is plush feeling but despite the electric assist, definitely hangs up on features more than the pivot bikes I typically run, and feels boringly planted. It rides more to my liking mulleted and tuning the shocks more progressive. Pivots just feel like magic carpets in my opinion and would argue they're more playful and bouncy/aggresive feeling than emphasized in this review. I have fond memories of an old specialized sx and would wager the stumpy to ride in similar fashion, but the sx was a pig for climbing.
Durability and maintenance is another concern. Again not empathized enough, the regular maintenance and replacement servicing of linkage bolts and bearings is nearly zero longterm with pivots compared to other brands and linkage designs.
As for direct to consumer bikes, many of these are rebranded and tweaked designs of mainstream bikes who's patent is expired. They're only more affordable because they haven't had to facilitate much R&D and they eliminate the storefront service centers designed to support their customers purchase locally and abroad. Maybe you're a good home taught mechanic but most other people aren't. And support for parts while traveling is going to be trickier than a major brand who has dealers. Food for thought for your next purchase.

Loving my XL Ripmo AF in the Phoenix area, but always wonder if there is something better eventually. Gotta pay more attention to my suspension setup as I’m a set and forget kinda guy, but I’m 220lbs (so much muscle of course). Do you ever consider hardtails? I know you had that cool purple one, but I’ve been drooling over some cool RSD bikes.

Every time i watch your videos where you feature the ripmo i want the bike more and more. But the only models i can get in my country are the ripmo af from 2021 or the ripmo v2 from 2022. Honestly i`m a bit scared that i will damage the carbon ripmo but then again is buying a factory new bike from 2021 a good idea? Thanks for all the work you do it`s a pleasure to watch u ride and talk about all those bikes

Those are bigger travel #s than I usually see for trail bikes. Usually 120-150 rear and 130-160 forks are trail bikes.

Great video and comparisons. The Bronson was my favorite trail bike ever until I tried the new Stumpjumper 15 with the genie Shock. With the level of tunning on that new shock plus the adjustability of the geo and wheel size that bike is at least 6 bikes in one. Maybe 10 lol.
I have not got to try the new Ripmo yet, it looks better than ever if you ask me.

I'm in the process of figuring out what my next ride is going to be.
Currently I'm going back and forth between the Pivot Switchblade and the Ibis Ripmo. The Ripley and 429 Trail are also on the list.
Currently riding an Evil Calling. Its a fun bike as long as you are going downhill but doesn't pedal like i want.
CT riding is lots of roots, rocks and up and down. Our longest dh is minutes before up or flat.

I appreciate you ranking your favourite bikes from your sponsor, JensonUSA, but I don’t see the Rocky Mountain Instinct on your list. Is that because you haven’t tried it yet or it didn’t make the cut?

I have the stumpjumper evo pro frame with evo comp material, mullet setup, and i must say that the bike is quite balanced for everything, i can enjoy flow trails enduro trails, ofc its not a truck but you have ton of fun, and still ride with my XC friends, i dont think the bike is slow, might be because the carbon frame but actually as mullet setup im pretty impressed that I don't stay behind with them pretty happy with my purchase for sure

Currently I ride a 2022 Canyon Spectral 29er in medium and for here in Michigan it is a great all around bike. However I do miss my Evil Bikes The Wreckoning in medium when I lived in Arizona and biked San Tan Mountain & Pemberton loop. Both bikes have great geo and I feel confident of not going OTB on current Spectral here in Michigan.

Man, that was a good one, but I will say I think you kind of did a disservice by not including the evil offering. It is still the current frame model and fits right into this category. Oh well, you have a huge review on it if anybody was interested. I’ve owned the switchblade the evil offering the ibis Ritmo as well as the stumpjumper and yeti takes the win in my book as an overall one bike quiver.

Thanks for the feedback Nick! I enjoyed the Offering, but haven't ridden it in nearly 3 years now. Not that it's been changed much, AFAIK. It's hard to remember back to it, but my style gets along better with the more supportive bikes.
