  • A common phenomenon when we experience insomnia is waking up with a start just at the moment we're drifting off. This can be extremely disorientating ... but it doesn't have to be.
Please share your own experiences in the comments, and if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.

Amazing video, thanks so much for creating it! I love the reminder that sleep isn't an all or nothing, one time opportunity. There's no exact window. We can just catch the next wave. So good 🧡

Great visual video for all the visual learners. I will always remember the waves analogy. Especially since I am sitting at the beach watching this.

Gosh, this exact thing happens to me so often. I've noticed that it's because my body gets warm and that wakes me up. So good to know it is not just me, and that I can just lie quietly and accept that it's all okay.

Yes, it's super-common and although the trigger can be different for different people, essentially it's the same thing that does it for all of us - anxiety/hyperarousal. As you say, lying quietly and accepting will definitely reduce this hyperarousal over time, leading to peaceful sleep.

This so good Jonathan. Your voice itself has very high sleep-inducing qualities 😂
But I was referring to the content, so clearly explained!

Thanks Hugo! You may remember it’s actually based on a conversation you and I had with some clients during the sleep coach training!

This was great and you're an excellent narrator. Maybe once you've created a bunch of videos, you can combine them to make an audio track that people can listen to when they are resting.

And probably anyone with insomnia. It’s the primary cause but it can be reduced so it’s no longer a problem using the tools of acceptance and understanding

This is helpful, I’m suffering from this since 2020, is it possible that coming with this situation vivid dreams?
And it becomes more aggressive when you try to take a nap at day. Still learning and having ups and downs
    Thank you

Yes vivid dreams can occur during hyper-sleep, which is essentially when your gas (sleep drive) and brake (fear and anxiety) are both very high. You say ‘when you try to take a nap’ - trying implies there is some struggle and this is probably causing the anxiety leading to hyper-sleep. Good to think about the intentions behind it, maybe just focus on resting rather than trying to force a nap.

I like this, but what to do if in addition to waking up in the middle of the night you have anxiety that overwhelms all attempts to accept the feelings and allow it to pass, so you remain awake the rest of the night in fear?

Ultimately the answer lies in befriending wakefulness and showing your brain that you are not in any danger. The anxiety and fear are showing up because your brain has detected a threat and it is flooding your body with adrenaline and cortisol to keep you safe. It sounds like you are overwhelmed by anxiety at this stage so lying there and just accepting is probably not an option. better to do something that makes you feel more comfortable at night - reading or watching TV or anything that calms your nervous system a little bit. Of course you're not going to enjoy it, as nobody enjoys being awake in the middle of the night when they want to be asleep but just sending some initial signals to the brain that you're ok and you are objectively safe is a good starting point. Give your brain a new picture of the night.
