How to make your own holiday yard decorations

- I've always wanted some fun decorations for my yard to display during the Christmas season. So I finally got around to making some and it was a fun project. I had a bunch of questions on how I made them so I created this step by step video so others can make their own decorations too. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

Thanks. Definitely more coming...just been swamped. We are getting ready to finish out our basement so we will have several videos from that alone. I’ve been using brackets on back and sliding down on rebar. I used to attach from front but attaching from the back has kept front hole free. Easy to take off and put away. I’ve kept the rebar in ground and just slide a new seasonal piece on.
Good tip. What brackets are you using...a tube of some kind bolted to the decoration? Then sliding that tube over the rebar?
@@RoughRidersTV it’s a small metal u shaped bracket with 2 holes to screw into the wood on back. I use 1/2” and same for rebar. Slides right on. Wish I could add a pic
I agree. The only thing I would change is drilling a hole thru the front.
Does the wooden item go down to the dround or stop before...I don't want my pieces sitting on the ground.

Normally, this would be done in the garage but it was freezing in the garage and we had about 2 feet of snow outside as well.

It's really what you are comfortable with. The more coats the more protection but the paint will also help seal the wood. We get a lot of snow so we put on a few coats.

Sorry for the late reply. Any jigsaw will work...you don't need this exact model. However, we bought the 20V XR because it was on sale and had a larger battery which was appealing.
My paints which are acrylic paint bought from hobby lobby they have streaks in them while i am painting & after it is dry. Any pointers on what I might be doing wrong ? Wrong Brushes, wrong paints ? Thank you for your step by step video its been a huge help :)

Yes, using a projector and miracast adapter from ScreenBeam plugged into the projector.
Great video! How many seasons/years do you think they will last with the regular plywood & sealing as you mentioned versus treated plywood? Do you think the same process would work for summer designs out in rainy & humid weather? Thanks
Treated plywood then sealed would likely be better. Marine grade plywood works well for wet conditions but that isn't easily found at typical big box stores.

It’s a box with a cutout, a light source, and the image on a clear sheet.
Great video. Do you think or know if a Nebula Capsule would work for this as a projector. I’m not quite sure I can project my phone screen to it.

Sorry, not familiar with the Nebula Capsule so I don't know if it would work or not. We just did a free image search on the web to find Christmas themed artwork.

For the colored paints, can they be any sort of acrylic craft paint, or do they have to be Exterior craft paints? I've been tasked to restore some wood cutouts and repaint them, and have a TON of regular craft paints, but I'm not sure if they'll be good to use for something that'll be used outdoors.
I think any paint will be fine provided you are sealing it. outdoor paints will often have additives that help it hold up against weather and direct sunlight.

We just googled images for what we were interested in.
Hi, I noticed you use the interior Varathane. Does that hold up as well as the exterior version? Ours will get direct sun all day long so had opted for the exterior but it is much harder to find in-store, so having to wait on delivery.
Yes. Seems to be holding up fine. I made a measuring stick so we can easily see how much snow we got during the winter, it's been out all summer as well. It is a little discolored and faded over the year but not horrible. Though exterior would be a better choice. Thanks for watching.
What wood are you using,theres so many options to choose from?
1/2" Sanded plywood is what most people use
Do you just push it in the ground or do you hammer the cutout on top?
soak the ground to soften the dirt and then you can generally push it in the ground. Don't hammer the cutout itself as it will smash the wood. If needed, you can hammer the spike or angle iron.
I’m just starting out and all I have so far is a variable speed jigsaw. What kind of projector do you have and where do you find the images to trace?
Images were just found on the internet. Projector was an Acer Pico projector but any projector will work. You just need something that will cast the image to a wall so you can trace the image onto the board.

For marking the outlines, it doesn't matter whether you use a sharpie, pencil or anything else. If you are using something to fill in in colors, then you want something that won't wash of when wet. We used a permanent marker (aka sharpie) but anything that is permanent should work.
How did you get the snowman to project on board? I don’t have a projector to draw snowman unless I free hand it?
We used a cheap pico projector that we have on hand for when we are camping and want a movie night.

Did these warp at all??
So far not yet. The grinch has been out for 2 seasons now (stored in the garage after the holidays are over) and has not faded or warped. Still working on better ways to stake it in the ground. Have an idea on how I'm going to address it but will have to wait until I pull them out and redesign the stake setup.
I have made some outdoor christmas figures painting the pattern with an oil based paint on plywood which was primed beforehand with an oil based paint. Want to preserve the luster of the colors. do you suggest a polyurethane or polyacrylic sealer or? I had tried to use acrylic paints to do the job but the stuff was too goopy would not flow with the brush. the oil based material spread well. any thoughts appreciated
I typically use a urethane clear coat but I suppose acrylic sealer would work as well.
So the polyurethane had yellowed over time… last year I had to sand down three characters, redraw, repaint ad sealed with polycrylic as it doesn’t yellow

Can I use a krylon gloss clear can of paint to seal?
Possibly. Not tried it so not sure how it would hold up to the elements. An exterior based clear coat would work best.
on the wood, home depot has exterior and interior plywood and 3ply and 4 ply.....can i use any
You can. Exterior ply is treated to withstand elements more so it might work better. However, applying paint and a clear coat will do a good job of protecting the wood as well...just be sure to seal those edges really well.
Instead of using wood have you tried cutting them out of PVC? You can get sheets of it 6mm thick in 4x8 size. Wouldnt have to worry about the elements so much.
Would like to know more! How costly? Heavy? Plywood worries me to death!
I feel like that would be a lot harder to cut and the paint wouldn’t adhere well
I have gone to using the pvc sheets available at Home Depot. They are easy to cut. Flat with no wood grain and easy to draw on. No primer needed. Draw, paint, seal with poly acrylic. But more expensive than plywood. A 4x8 sheet was $65 last year, and is $99 this year. They use this pvc to trim house exteriors so they hold up to the weather.

I'm having issues with the polyurethane taking off/smearing the paint - any suggestions?
Was the paint fully cured? You need to let it completely dry before applying any clear coat.

How thick is the plywood I tried to cut one and it chips a lot
You may need a different blade on your jig saw. Perhaps it is not sharp enough or doesn't have enough teeth for a more fine cut. Some blades are best for "ripping wood" which cuts through wood fast. Other blades are best for finer cuts. They cut slower but have less tear out and chipping. As for wood, we used 1/2 inch ply wood.

As for multiple passes... its because some of the lines are too sharp a turn for the jig saw so trim it off so it is easier to get too. It's easier to sneak up on it than to try and get it all in one shot

What can I use in stead of a projector?
Anything that can cast an image onto the plywood. However, a projector is probably the easiest solution.
Did you use a overhead projector?
It was just a pic projector but an overhead projector would work as well assuming you have the image on acetate or something. So you could trace it onto acetate and then use an overhead projector to cast the image onto wood. Just not sure where you would find an overhead projector these days.

These were made with about 1/2" thick plywood. More than sturdy enough for this project.

@@Keep__moving__forward No, just regular plywood. However, I do seal it after painting. So between the paint and the sealer, it holds up well to the weather and snow here in Colorado.

It depends on how many coats of paint. The longest period is really just waiting on paint and clear coat to dry. I did mine over a weekend because I put multiple coats on and allowed a lot of drying time.

The projector is connected to a computer with the image. We then project that image onto a board so we can trace the image onto the board.

@@TheDwilliams1000 I make these as well, and you can actually get some conduit brackets from home depot and put two of them, and a piece of rebar. Hamer the rebar into the ground a few inches, then slide your cutout against it, and drill in the conduit brackets around it.

No but it is the exact same process. Find the image, project it onto a board, trace the image, cut out and paint.
Couls you please help me? Im trying to get a projector but Im looking into tracing onto a large sheet of plywood, looking to make a 7 foot tall character but dont know which projector to go with. please help!!
Most projectors will work fine, it's just a matter of brightness and how far back you need to put the projector to scale the image to the size you want. The further the projector is away from the board, the larger the image will be projected. If you had a projector with a 1:1 throw, every foot back from the board would be 1 foot tall. However, keep in mind that as the image grows taller, it also grows wider so depending on the image, it may not fit on a standard 4x8 sheet of plywood. Your height will likely be limited by the width of the image.

Hello, can you please take a picture of your top coat can my girlfriend is having a very hard time picking a topcoat she doesn’t know which one to get she doesn’t know what to get do you use matte finish or gloss? your jigsaw is covering the label in the pic
An exterior grade clear eurathane or marine spar finish will work best. It may be hard to find an exterior grade at your big box stores. You might need to go to a more specialty store like Woodcraft or Rockler.
don't understand the projector part you still need a patteren
You find the pattern/image you want to use on your phone, computer or tablet and then connect your device to the projector and cast that image on to the board. Then using a pen/sharpie marker trace the outline onto the board. Once the image is transferred to the board, you can use a jig saw to cut out the image.

Question for casting images if you are making a group of images let’s say the peanuts characters how would you know how to scale them different sizes say Woodstock compared to Charlie Brown
