All right I have been made acutely aware of various mistakes during the video I would like to clear up. Sister does get named way later I just forgot her name because it was said during season 16 when I was already in a coma watching, I called Florida a random dude as a joke to make people pay more attention when he's reintroduced at the end of season 10, and I have been made distinctly aware that church was not in Doom but in fact the game marathon

Its crazy that the entire reason the voice filter exists is because Jason (Tucker's VA) and later Gus (Simmon's VA) literally had to phone their lines because they weren't in Austin and they just kept with it.

  • @J__T
    @J__T Місяць тому +201

Yeah, the reason for the helmet muffle is because numerous characters are being VA'd thru a telephone into a mic, so Burnie chose to make everyone sound this way to make things consistent. RvB has some editing mastery that will always be remembered; I've seen someone mention the flags and the bomb with only red-Donut, Sarge, Caboose, and Flowers(?). The much more popular shocking moment that no one today will notice is that Sarge (red), Simmons (maroon), and Grif (orange?) all get in the warthog almost at the same time. That, in original Halo CE, wasn't possible; only the same team can get into the same warthog, but Bungie loved it so much they added it from Halo 2 onwards.

I absolutely adore the running joke in the Chorus Saga where each time the ship crashing is mentioned we get a scene where in some way one of the characters messes up the ship and causes it to crash, and it’s paid off way later by their antics being what caused them to survive due to the ship completely breaking apart and not being brought to the ambush spot by the tractor beam

I really liked the paralel between Church in the trailer for Restoration and the Director at the end of season 10. Both essentially stuck in a room trying to "get it right" the Director with Tex and Church with his simulations for the reds and blues. Both done for people who they cared for and both equally sad. Goes to show that despite the things they both did and the direction their lives took they are both still the same person at their core, for better or worse.

one of the many reasons I love about restoration even though some characters have grim future or separated & weren't in the final season doesn't mean we can't create our own ending on what happens afterwards. Burnie gave us the key to write a story for these characters on how we see fit.

20:30 He’s not in Doom, he’s actually in one of the old Marathon games by Bungies. Games that, which I should mention, delve into A.I. , cybernetic soldiers and time travel a good amount. Needless to say, Marathon was a big inspiration for Halo, so seeing Church literally go back in time to one of Bungies earlier games was pretty funny.
Also, it also adds even more credence to the theory that Church was actually intended to be an A.I., not a ghost, since Season 1-2. Besides him and Tex having the same ability as Omega to go into other peoples heads and that holograms do exist in Red vs. Blue, Church just so happening to go back in time to a game that is based around rogue A.I. adds even more evidence. Not to mention the entire time travel section orchestrated by Gary (Gamma), which showed us that Church was going through multiple simulations to try and escape the “Past”.
One interesting part of Season 2 was when Sarge ordered an air strike, and afterwards when Tucker realized that the war was a lie, Tucker got exploded by a missile when O’Malley showed up. In Season 3, when Church is trying to fix everything in the first simulation, he shoots a rocket launcher at O’Malley, only for it to blow up Tucker. What my theory is, is that Church didn’t know that the Reds had called for an air strike on Tucker, so he assumed that O’Malley had somehow shot it, only for Church himself to end up shooting the rocket at Tucker accidentally when he was in the simulation. In reality, that missile was actually the air strike done by command to kill Tucker. This led me to believe right off the bat that Church’s time traveling was actually all a simulation.

Here's a few extra notes that you missed out on.
    1. Some of the freelancers were part of secret experiments, whether they knew it or not. For instance, North and South Dakota were a sibling test to see what would happen if one was given better treatment than the other. This is why South always got the short end of the stick: it was to see how it affected her motivation and dynamic with North. This gets North killed, but I doubt the director ever really cared about anyone other than Carolina and Texas.
    2. The Epsilon stuff in Season 9 was meant to be an altered version of the events of season 1 only, hence why Wyoming doesn't show up. As shown in some of the season 14 stuff, Epsilon's memories of Blood Gulch are based on what Caboose told him, paired with details he gleamed from the others that sort of stitched an incomplete image together. His knowledge of the events also causes it to be a "What if Church always knew he was the Alpha" type of story. Given what we see in season 14, the events we see were basically just Epsilon's last attempt at getting to Tex after multiple failed attempts, which parallels how the director's memories of her failures doomed her every time.
    3. Theta's personality trait is actually Trust, which makes sense given that he was paired with North, the most laid back freelancer. The AIs Carolina got, Eta and Iota, were the Fear and Happiness, two rather odd combos for her... until you realize they were supposed to go to South and Washington. It's never specified who would've gotten each one, but given her role in the secret test, my guess is South would get Fear Eta.
    4. A detail that often gets overlooked in season 10 is in Church's rant. When discussing the plan with everyone, he stands at equal height with everyone. When he gets pissed, he grows to tower over them, as a symbol of his, and by extension the director's, arrogance about being better than everyone. When he begins to regret what he says, he regresses into a smaller AI form, which represents his insecurities about being lesser than the others due to being a cheap copy of someone else.
    5. People seem to forget this, but the Sigma AI was voiced by ELIJAH FUCKING WOOD in season 10. I don't even understand how they managed that, but it's cool as hell and was the catalyst for what RT got to do with RWBY and GEN:Lock later down the line.
    6. In the last scene of season 10, all the visors are wrong and Caboose and Carolina have the wrong helmets. This is because Halo 4 was not out yet when season 10 was releasing. RT got early access from 343 so that they could film the final scene, but didn't have access to the multiplayer to unlock the right accessories. Caboose not having the right helmet at the start of season 11 was their attempt at preserving continuity. Bonus fun fact: the season 10 finale actually released the day before Halo 4's release, meaning that they were some of the first people to get a proper look at the game's PVP.

      @JetZV Місяць тому +6

@@just-a-guy-dat-loves-Adventure It wouldn't let me add onto the original, so here.
      7. Felix having the sword instead of Locus is actually way more important to the story than it seems. If Locus had it the whole time, it leaves a chance for Felix to have survived the fall off the communication tower. When Locus activates it, it confirms that Felix did not survive without anyone saying it outright, which is great visual storytelling.
      8. They showed Sister/Kai in season 13 during Church's message because of a plot point from an earlier story. When Sarge got the message to go after Washington in season 6, only Kai and Lopez were left in the canyon. In Relocated, Lopez tells Grif that he choked her to death to win the war; her presence shows that she survived the ordeal and, in her own words, found the strangling hot.
      9. When speaking to FILSS/Sheila at the console during the finale, the status update can be seen at the bottom being constantly randomized letters. If you pause it correctly, the letters become a clear message: CHURCH DIES IN THE END. You can see it in this video at 3:39:34 If you go through frame-by-frame.
      10. Hargrove's office is littered with Project Freelancer "trophies." The collection includes Tex's helmet, the Epsilon recovery unit, Maine's armor, Epsilon's monitor body from seasons 7 + 8, and the Grif Shot. The pistol confuses a lot of people, but it's the magnum that Carolina left for Director Church... that he killed himself with.
      11. Season 14 has some really great stuff in it. The animated episode was actually a failed pilot for an RVB animated series, one episode is a Death Battle crossover, two focus on a Project Freelancer triplets experiment, and one shows off how Vic was a normal AI that got screwed up by Flowers tripping on a power cable, jumbling up the deployment list. Plus, the Epsilon memory unit genderbend episode confirms that Church is bisexual, a play on the "gay robot" line from Caboose.
      12. Jax name dropping a bunch of movies isn't meant to be funny. He's a pretentious film guy that spouts movie references to make himself cooler, which is why everyone in the show hates him. When he makes a comment about how cliche Temple's backstory is, he's shot in the leg; it's how everyone wants to react to him, but they're too nice to do it.
      13. As for everyone else making a bunch of references, I think it's fine since it only happens in the recap. They've been there for a while, so they're just highlighting a few moments and leaving out the more mundane stuff. My favorite bit is Tucker and Grif starting a band to pick up chicks, only to shut it down when Carolina joins as their lead singer and ends up being terrible at it.
      14. There's a theory that went around for a while that Biff (the anti-Grif) was actually Grif's father and that his girl back home was pregnant with Grif. Unfortunately, the timeline doesn't match up at all since that would mean Wash and Carolina are at least in their 40's or even 50's, which just seems wrong.
      15. Caboose's lack of rage comes off as growth to me. Season 14's "how to make friends" shows that he has started to grow past needing Church around. Getting him back would be great, but it's like he says in the finale: "I know we're all gonna be okay."
      16. The giant drill makes sense since they don't want to come at the UNSC from above. It being powered by a time machine actually loops back to Loco. Caboose is really good with machines and Loco takes that to its natural extreme.
      17. All of the "Blues and Reds" names are plays on the OG team's names. Surge, Cronus, and Biff are similar sounding names, Loco is short for locomotive (a caboose synonym), Temple is a church synonym, Lorenzo is Italian instead of Spanish, Gene is a play on Gene Simmons, and Shelly is their Sheila replacement in the flashback. Buckey just kinda has the same "uck" sound as Tucker, but I'm not sure if there is anything more substantial there.
      18. Less facts going forward, more just opinions. As someone that likes seasons 16 and 17 more than most people, I can't deny that it definitely jumped the shark. Some really nice character moments here and there, but ultimately meaningless and weird. Making Jenkins into Chrovos at the end was a really clever twist, though.
      19. Another opinion: RVB Zero isn't good, but I think it could've worked if they put more time into it. If it had gotten a full twenty episodes, I think it would've turned out better. For example, the pink one being evil could've had an impact similar to Felix's turn or maybe even the Alpha reveal if we had known her for longer than four episodes. "Killing" Tucker for the sword was also dumb; at least killing Locus would make the villains look tough.
      20. The Family Shatters series that followed RVB Zero is recognized by the RT staff as its own season of RVB, which makes them seasons 18 and 19. This then means that Restoration is technically season 20.
      21. Seasons 15 through 19 being retconned into being Church running simulations inside of Maine's armor is brilliant. It also makes sense plotwise, since Maine's armor is Freelancer gear that allowed Church to run the sims without issue. This is also how he was able to leave all the recordings; in his last moments, he had basically decades to run all the possible scenarios.
      22. Restoration was obviously meant to be an entire season, which is why certain plot details just kind of fade into the wind. Lopez is never seen again after fixing Caboose's helmet, Donut is mentioned once as an Admiral on Chorus (probably because he was the only one that stuck around), and Sister is at the convention briefly.
      23. There are some references to the retconned seasons. One (the blue chick from RVB Zero) is the pilot that takes Grif away at the end and the reporter from season 15, Dylan Andrews, is the host of the panel that Meta attacks.
      24. Your observation in season 3 about how Sarge sees Caboose as his son when they're together makes the fact that his last heroic act was saving him even more touching.
      25. According to the RVB crew, there's a cut part of the script where Sarge's dying words are the "today is a good day to die" line, except that he trails off and dies after day.
      26. The fact that nobody knows Sarge's actual name is long-term consistency. Nobody actually knows his name; I don't even think they came up with one behind the scenes.
      27. Having the backup body in Blue base is actually a direct callback to the fact that they had the robots at all. The backups never being mentioned before now makes sense when you realize that Epsilon wouldn't have known about them until at least season 8, maybe even season 10. Since he hasn't been back to Blood Gulch since they originally left in season 5, he's never had an opportunity to go and check to see if they're still there.
      28. Caboose actually tells Grif and Simmons what his plan is with bringing Church back, but they just assume that it doesn't work. As a bonus, they actually play the Barenaked Ladies song "Waning Moon" over the campfire scene.
      29. This is notable since, and I can't believe I didn't know this until looking it up, the band's lead singer Ed Robertson loves RVB and was the VOICE OF CAPTAIN BUTCH FLOWERS AKA AGENT FLORIDA.
      30. The Sigma voice is sadly not Elijah Wood in the last season; it's Miles doing a damn good impression, though.
      31. Caboose being the only one to know that Tex and Church are Carolina's parents is fitting, since he's the one that completes the process of filling up the memory unit. If you recall season 8, Church said that Caboose was the only one that was allowed to remember him, since Tucker would just fuck it up. In the end, Caboose fulfilled that promise by being the one to remember him. This also makes it tragic that he's the one to finally put them down, putting him in the same spot as season 15.
      32. Simmons' shotgun stand-off against Meta is a direct callback to Sarge's last stand in season eight, even down to Meta's slow march forward.
      33. During the fight, Tex does several moves that reference previous fights. The big one is probably her slamming the recovery unit on Meta's chest being a callback to the punch she gave to Tucker during the season 8 fight.
      33. You said that Allison and Leonard didn't get a lot of time in the unit together, but that's not the case. Given the fact that Caboose breaks it after Tucker wakes up from being exhausted, its likely that quite a few hours pass between Meta's defeat and Tucker waking up. Since time moves differently for AI (recall Church's explanation of the recordings), the two likely had decades, if not several lifetimes, to be together.
      34. When thinking back on his Freelancer companions that were lost, Wyoming is oddly absent from Wash's vision, despite people like South being there that he was on worse terms with.

    • @JetZV
      @JetZV Місяць тому +4

@@just-a-guy-dat-loves-Adventure Few more things I thought of:
      1. The simulation that the Blues and Reds went through was just an exercise for the Freelancers. Carolina's presence indicates that this takes place before the season 10 flashbacks (we know it's post-9 since we see the highway chase on a screen next to The Director). It was also the simulation that ran the longest, which is why the Blood Gulch cast emulates them.
      2. Texas uses the Omega voice during this flashback too, indicating that this takes place after she gets the Omega AI, which also happened between seasons.
      3. Temple and Biff being on opposite teams was an oversight on The Director's end; they figured out what was going on due to enlisting together. However, their constant efforts to prevent bloodshed accidentally led to the perpetual stalemate that The Director was looking for. This is why we got those setup episodes in Season 14; this was their precursor.
      4. Temple's flashback also confirms that they did not have a Doc counterpart; instead, they just had Doc. Before he worked in Blood Gulch, he was the medical officer for ALL the simulations involving red and blue soldiers across ALL of Project Freelancer.
      5. Speaking of Doc, his betrayal in season 16 makes a lot of sense when you realize that the whole "remaking O'Malley in his own mind" thing was never resolved. That, paired with the Reds and Blues' reaction to him siding with Temple, actually gives a decent timeline of his mind degrading over time.
      6. Caboose's whole "not being mad" thing has another factor to it: he genuinely doesn't know how to get angry. In the season 10 fight against the Tex bots, he explicitly says he can't remember how to do it. Epsilon has to use his knowledge of Omega to get him properly angry, which is why we get the "I hate taxes" line.
      7. The reason why Tex is able to make Church properly in the memory unit is because she likely took the Epsilon recordings from Caboose before tossing him at Meta Tucker. Those, paired with the memories the guys gave her and the fragments she locked up, allowed her to create a default Church to be with.
      8. It's a theory on my end, but it's possible that Tex and Church don't actually die when Caboose crushes the unit. Given what we've seen of the AIs in the past, it's possible that they could have been ejected from the unit and turned into "ghosts" like in the earlier seasons. I prefer them dying for real, but the idea of them peacefully giving in to the unit's destruction, only to wake up on a ridge overlooking the canyon while muttering "son of a bitch" to each other, incredibly amusing.

Burnie Burns only wrote Seasons 1 - 10 and Restoration.
11 - 13 was Miles Luna, also one of the main writers on RWBY.
14 was a hodgepodge. Miles wrote the Locus/Felix backstory trilogy, Joe Nicolosi wrote the Megablocks one, etc.
15 and Shisno was Joe Nicolosi, and even though Singularity is the ending to the trilogy as far as I know Nicolosi had little to no involvement. They had a different idea they were going to do but there was some budget shenanigans involving fellow RT show gen:LOCK (something that also affected RWBY I believe, it was a mess) so Singularity is what we ended up with, and written by Jason Weight.

What I believe is the most underrated joke comes from Season 17 when the gang gets their memories back after time traveling. When Caboose meets Carolina he says something like "Hey I know you, weren't you in a movie?" Then later he says "Bruce Willis."
The reason I bring this up is that when they did the Meta vs Carolina Death Battle in season 14, Caboose says "He didn't have a head under his helmet, he was a ghost the whole time. Like Bruce Willis." That's such a crazy callback to for something that could've been a random Caboose line.

I haven't seen anyone talk about this, but a big thing i like about monty's animations was that they were integrated with Halo 3's engine so well! The very first fight scene, with wash and the reds, has wash flung across the map into some explosive barrels, knocking them over. Those barrels, however, weren't animated, but made in engine! They somehow knocked over the barrels in a way that it could fit with the animation, causing a roger rabbit effect. And THEN when Wash gets up, he stumbles around a bit and knocks over a barrel, WHICH WAS ALSO IN ENGINE. Little details like that didn't make the animations feel jarring when compared to the machinima. They paid attention to map lighting, details, physics objects, etc! That reason was my exact problem with the new animations. When locust gives Freckle's brain, he's in a completely different lighting. For some episodes in the later half of the trilogy, there's an inexplicable BAR at the top of the screen whenever there's an animation. Of course, nothing will top Monty's animations, but they could have at least looked at the little details.

The thing with marathon is that its story is all about AI and cybernetics altering minds and in Marathon infinity reality itself, so in retrospecting it almost feels like foreshadowing. Also Marathon today is basically the template for Halo's story as well as Myth (with all of them including destiny having some kind of multiversal conection and 343 weirdly enought kept the way marathon and halo relate by having story elements that keep them tie, as the cycle of development of species and incomprehensible beings as the W'rkncacnter and the Precursors.)
PD: Also MYTH also references higher beings (most probably the same as the W'rkncacnter and the Precursors are) and is the most front and center with the idea of the cycle.

Not only did MOST of the things they did feel pretty in character for the group by that point(MOST of them, the water park and stranger things reference did feel kinda weird), but they actually did have a few callbacks, like Grif's shrooms being used in the final fight, and Carolina trying to get away from being a violent person. Burnie was the lead writer from seasons 1-10, he also wrote one episode of season 12 (the one that explains where Church and Carolina were) a few episodes of season 14, and then he returned for the movie
After Burnie, the lead writer became Miles Luna, who had previously worked as a writer in Season 10, he stayed at his job from Seasons 10-14, and he returned to help with Season 17
After Miles, the lead writer position went to Joe Nicolosi (who wrote a few episodes of Season 14) who stayed in that position for seasons 15 and 16, but he left after the bad reception of 16. In that season he started dividing his writing responsibilities with Jason Weight (who previously worked on the PSAs) and he would stay for Season 17, becoming the lead writer at that point.
And finally, for Season 18, the lead became a man named Torrian Crawford, who previously worked on Death Battle

It really is absurd that RVB works considering how much they had to break the rule of show don’t tell. Truly a testament to the dialogue

Love this show, and I’m on my like 4th or 5th rewatch rn (thanks for the link to the RT archive! I was watching on the RT website, that got killed, then on the Internet Archive but it’s been really slow to load, and it looks like the RT archive will be much more convenient), I’m halfway through Season 8. Loved the deep dive, and the many comments about the music has made me want to go in and listen to it all. I’m just staring to DM my first DND campaign and I’m 100% using Tex’s theme in a boss fight.

It is actually insane how good (at least season 6-13) of Red Vs Blue. It actually had very good themes, monologues(Director season 6, Church season 8,9),very impressive side characters (Carolina, Washington), and some of the most emotional scenes ever (I forget You, Director’s conclusion). It is genuinely probably in my t5 media ever.

@@Whitename Miles helped writing season 17 because Joe Nicolosi left after season 16 (probably because of the backlash) but he had written an outline. But i think most of the scripting was really done by Jason Weight (who also wrote season 16 and who many people believe wrote the best parts of that season) but Miles helped out a lot.

@@NobleCaboose117 to make a long story short, miles was in charge of The Chorus Trilogy after that there were a bunch of different writers because Season 14 was an anthology (and unnofficially a way to get a new showrunner) because they didn't know what to do post chorus, after that Joe Nichololosi at least did the first season of The Shisno Paradox, beyond that I have no clue beyond Burnie coming back for Restoration to end the series.

I remember getting into RvB simply because some British dude was reacting to the series over a decade ago, and he was also reacting to other stuff I liked, so I decided to give RvB a shot. I’M GLAD I DID.
Granted, I stopped once I got done with Season 15. As far as I was concerned, I got my answer for the Season 13 cliffhanger, and I just didn’t feel like watching it anymore.
Then Restoration came out. I watched that movie mostly out of obligation to a show I hold so near and dear to my heart. And it’s just okay, with a rushed as hell first half and a less rushed second half. The ending nearly brought me to tears though, simply by giving that feeling of being over. It was done.
I will never forget this show.
