Something I really liked about the movie too is that when Mario is with Luigi he is very confident and takes charge easily. But when he was separated from Luigi he was more soft spoken and shy which really helps to sell that Mario see's Luigi as more than just a brother but someone who inspires confidence in him.
My favorite character, Lumalee, is actually voiced by the director’s daughter. The best part is that she was supposed to just be the scratch voice for the storyboards but everyone liked her so much that they just kept her
They actually also did that with Illumination’s last film Migration. The Australian editor of the film Christian Gazal brought in his daughter Tresi to provide scratch vocals for the character Gwen and she ended up voicing her in the final film
Being italian made this movie 10x better, the accents were hilarious. The best part was our family also screams “HEYO” whenever we greet each other so hearing that in the movie was mind blowing
Another possible reason why they made Mario and Luigi spend most of the movie separated might've been because it honestly makes more sense for Mario to want to save his brother from Bowser than it does a pretty princess who he only just met. Also, Mario did say that he and Luigi had never been apart for that long which I think makes for good character growth for both of them
Think that’s a good point. And now. They could easily have them team up for most of the movie in the sequel as they go save the mushroom or whichever kingdom they base the sequel in.
My new headcanon is that Peach actually clears the courses until the very end because a toad got kidnapped and they had just reset their defenses to try and stop you
Well, he gave a win to Luigi being supportive of Mario in the face of Bowser's intimidation even when he wasn't there, so I'd say it counts well enough.
I'd add an extra win (or 20) for, at the last minute, not just Mario, but both Mario Bros. taking the Super Star and beating Bowser with it. It reminds you that this isn't "The Mario Movie", it's *"The Super Mario Bros. Movie"!*
For as little as Mario and Luigi were actually together on-screen, I feel like they did really well on establishing their bond before they were separated and reminding us of it while they were apart. Their reunion feels rewarding because of it. 💖
Something I haven't seen anyone talk about is how while in the mushroom kingdom (i.e. the game world) no matter what hits Mario takes he still looks pristine when he gets back up, but when they return to Brooklyn for the final part of the fight he starts getting bruised again.
And that kinda makes sense when you think about it! You can say Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom are two entirely different universes with their own rules, and this is a great, subtle way to let us remind us of that detail.
I love that the movie was mainly centered towards the brotherly relationship of Mario and Luigi, we don't have too many movies like this whereas the older sibling is usually dominating over the younger sibling and bullying them for it As an older brother myself I try to be fair in terms of status towards my lil bro
Too bad Luigi is completely off to the sides for almost the entirety of the movie, to be a "damsel in distress." Yay...... 🫤 (You can tell I fucking hate this movie)
@@animodev2099 So what? They could've have at least done something interesting with him, like him trying to come up with a plan to escape Bowser's castle. Y'know, something that would warrant him to be in the movie, besides him being filler until the last 15 minutes of the film? I swear, this movie juggles all these characters and barely develops them at all. (besides Bowser)
Fun note (idk if you got it, I'm at 13:20): Mario doesn't take bruises or anything during his time in the land of Peach and the Kongs and such, but he gets bruises in the real world against Bowser
The highlight of this movie for me personally was the score. The way the classic Mario songs were integrated was great and hearing Gusty Garden Galaxy at the end brought back great memories. Hats off to Brian Tyler
I heartfully agree!😁 The thing that caught my attention the most besides the references was the music and how well the composer orchetralized the original songs, and then of course it's Brian Tyler aswell!
Fun fact: When I went to go watch this in theaters, my sister looked up Mario's height after one of the jokes about him being small and she showed me. Mario is 5'1. I am also 5'1. I don't know whether to feel honored or insulted.
Why would he do that? It's a Christian story and speaks to morals that he likely doesn't agree with, considering how political he gets in so many of his videos. He's probably complain about Val Kilmer playing a Hebrew.
So, I work at a movie theater, and one of the things we do is give speeches about the movie before each showing. This can extend to private showings as well, so, I got volunteered to do a speech for a private showing of this movie for a birthday party of a bunch of kids. I got to make jokes and say my favorite Mario games, and it went over so well, one of the parents actually got emotional. This movie holds a special place in my heart for that reason.
I like how Luigi's phone ringtone is the game cube opening, Luigi's Mansion is the defining game for him that was his own, and it was first launched on the game cube, so it all makes sense.
12:20 I have a small correction for you, you CAN stomp piranha plants in 3d world. That game had already had references in the movie like everything else, so having that mechanic show up, like when peach used her float and had her fire flower dress, it makes sense. Edit: I'm a little bit stupid. This is also the main way of killing piranha plants in Mario Odyssey so it makes lots of sense the would make it possible in the movie if it was in his latest game 3d game. Killing a piranha plant this way is necessary to turn back on new donk city's power. STOP REPLYING WITH ALL THE GAMES YOU CAN DO IT IN IM AWARE OF IT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
the best way I can describe it is that it's like a lazy river (which for those of you who don't know is a type of pool that's basically a looping stretch of water with a slow current that you just relax in as the current carries you around in a circle) It's not that big, it's not that deep, but what's there is enjoyable if you want to just relax for a while
This still confuses me. Even if it wasn't expected to be, what in the world did people expect? I've seen nothing but poor adaptations that are just spearheaded by people who have no idea what made the original so beloved and think they can do better, resulting in mess after mess that resembles the original in name only. This movie not only fully accepted all of its weird, goofy, fun aspects of its source material, but it looks almost exactly like what I dreamed a Mario movie would be like. There's not even a need to justify a "basic plot." It's just modern western culture that seems to be always expecting cinematic worlds that "make sense" or have some kind of sci-fi explanation when I never gave a crap about why Mario's world has floating blocks, power ups, a random road in the sky made of rainbow, etc. Evidence of this is the shift in explaining super powers in all the modern super hero movies and shows. [Fake science term] particles", meta-humans, genetically modified [animal], etc. Like, those types of explanations have existed before, but that need to make sure the audience understands "how" it works almost exactly, was not as prominent a few decades ago as it is today. So, no, in my opinion, it doesn't even need defending in that "it's shallow but that's OK." It's not even shallow. Its narrative structure follows the classic hero plot. It has a surprising number of hidden little lore drops and makes sense out of things that weren't even clear in the games such as why Peach is good at the obstacle course. Instead of being some Mary Sue, she is a human, more capable of fighting than the toads who are not warriors, and she grew up there, having lots of opportunities to practice, and her Toads are literally family to her. It's touching. That's just one example, but you get my point.
@@TayoEXE ........Woah. I respect your honest, thoroughly detailed opinion. But to be honest, i think the Mario could've been way better than it actually is. The LEGO Movie which came out almost a decade ago, not only follows the same basic Hero's journey plot line, but does it like 1000× times better, exploring themes of creativity and self-expression. While also being an amazing tribute to LEGO (I should know, as a hardcore fan), with sharp and hilarious writing, and beautiful animation. You can tell that not just the animators poured their blood, sweat, and tears into it, but *EVERYONE* working on the film did. If the movie about fucking LEGO minifigures can do this and more, why can't the Mario movie? They wasted 40 years worth of creative ideas to give us a bland cracker-fuck movie that does a disservice to one of gaming's greatest icons. But hey, that's my just overly long opinion. EITHER THAT OR I'M RETAR---
@@TayoEXE Something else than "Well that wasn't a total waste of money". That is what people expected but not what we got. They had an opportunity to make a truly great piece of cinema and we got something like this. And people like you still defend it
@@volvoman5262 Did I ever mention that? I said that if they actually tried, why couldn't they be able to make a Mario movie on the *SAME* *LEVEL* of *QUALITY* as the Lego Movie. Not to follow it 1:1.
Want an even DEEPER cut? Apparently Mario's brain parent, Shigeru Miyamoto, had a harrowing childhood experience with a dog which led to his inspiration for the Chain Chomps. So the bros' encounter with Francis in the beginning was semi-biographical!
13:28 Did you know the composer had to acutally fight to get Superstars (the whole of the song from power-up to double brother kick) put in, instead of the execs wanting to put Van Halen's Jump? I like the copyrighted pieces used in most cases but if they did that we would have lost something special.
If you look closely at 6:12 you can actually see a Shy Guy takes off his mask and the terrified expressions of the Goomba, Koopas and Spiny They really thought of everything in this movie and I love it
9:09 i like the consistency that ANY damage causes the effects of the mushrooms to disappear. so while Mario does take massive damage from the flick it does cause him to return to normal size.
The mega bullet bill that nearly takes out Peaches castle is 100% a super smash melee reference. The castle's map has a bullet bill that attacks straight down onto the center of the castle, just like the movie
I think my favorite part about what new stuff the movie brought to that table are definitely his mannerisms. The waving one you pointed out is really cute and he clearly uses it as a kind of coping mechanism like “I have know Idea what you are but I can start with a hello always, and he’s usually so nervous about it. He also has this little deep breath windup thing he does before he attempt’s something, like a ritual. Such a neat touch.
For those who have watched it, given it was done by Illumination; I'm highly surprised there wasn't at least 1 fart joke or innuendo. Like it had none, and I feel that's what made it even better
Yeah, Illumination, while they are known for making quality films like this, and the Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets, and Sing franchises, they finally did a movie where there wasn't a damn fart joke, innuendo, or anything else cringy, so that's great! They actually took it seriously while still being funny!
Yes, Bob-ombs are infact sentient. They have been ever since Super Mario 64. They were actually one of the first non-unique enemies confirmed sentient, tied with Koopas.
@@ballisticboo7808 They are sentient, but that doesn't make them organic. Bob-ombs are made in a factory, sure, but that doesn't make their lives any less real than a creature born naturally. Like AI, except more explodey!
Sometimes when they blow up, that's it for them, sometimes they just detonate and get covered in soot. Personally, I prefer the idea that they don't necessarily die when exploding. Like in Paper Mario, and Thousand Year Door.
@@SpyderDragonDude I didn't replaced it. The licensed came first and they composed the original music for the scenes later. They then decided to keep some of the licensed music because they thought it fit the scene better.
Mario is often referred to as small and mentions himself feeling small in the movie. Bowser is the tallest and looms over everyone. By the end of the movie, Bowser is the smallest compared to everyone. Thought that was a clever way to end it that you probably won't realize until you think about it.
Did anyone else notice the awesome musical transition from Sex Bob-Omb back to the Mario Movie at 6:16? Like, that was kind of amazing! Plus, I love Scott Pilgrim, so that makes it even better.
Illumination is good at creating character development, whether it be Sing 2 or Despicable Me, which is why the flashback of Mario protecting Luigi was such a powerful reminder of their bond without a single word of dialogue.
It really is the little things. Spike, their relatives, everyone seems to think Mario is a failure and they he's just dragging Luigi down with him. It's just so wholesome to see that despite that, Luigi willingly sticks with his bro because Mario was always there for him. It's a simple premise, but hits home with me and my own brothers.
14:00 - *“It lasts for 30 seconds, and then it's gone.”* If you think about it, there's a reason why this power-up in particular has to be time-limited, _besides_ the fact that it would be way too OP: Unlike all the other power-ups, you can't lose it from being hit, because it makes you _invulnerable._
Only complaint is no win for the Bowser: "Do princesses find him attractive?" Luigi: "They do if they have good taste!" line. Though a general best brother win does cover that whole interaction with Bowser pulling Luigi's mustache.
Ok long take always counts. It might not be quite as difficult as live-action, but mapping out the scene and keeping it smooth by not abusing the infinite angles you have is pretty frickin impressive.
I know there were a lot of wins for the score, but it really can't be oversold enough. They threw in literally 2 seconds of the final boss theme of Mario Galaxy for no reason aside from "it worked for that scene;" there's clearly SO much passion behind it
Fun fact about 1:12 The eyepatch actually has a tactical advantage. By covering one eye, you can remove the eyepatch when entering a dark area or room, and the one eye under the patch will already be used to the darkness. Giving you a natural "night vision"
Something that I think deserves a mention is while the bo-bomb is running through Bowsers ship, you can catch a bunch of Koopas and a Goomba reacting to what's underneath a shy-guys mask. It can be seen in the video on the right side of the screen if anyone wants to look for it.
11:52 cute little detail, the bob-omb in the wedding bows to King Bob-omb, as he is the king of the bob-omb, and like a good loyal bob-omb, it respects the king.
Personally, this was a phenomenal movie for me. So many easter eggs, references, and bits of my nostalgic youth all wrapped up in one very well done movie. This movie, along with the Sonic movies, cements that studios CAN make a good video game to movie adaptation if they honor and understand where the material is coming from.
Yeah, that may very well have been the damn problem with the crappy original Mario live-action film from 1993 and other bad video game movies, it wasn't even remotely faithful to it's source material, unlike this sheer beauty! The characters barely looked like their counterparts and looked way too realistic! Here, they actually look like the characters with far more detailed designs, and they actually do the games good in this movie too! The Sonic Movies also pay plenty of homage to the games, including the rings, areas inspired by levels, great human characters, and characters being true to the characters in the games in terms of personality!
8:07 I love how even though the Shy Guys don't change much you can still see how much expression they're experiencing that slow subtly lean I love the Shy Guys they're so cute.
Absolutely loved the movie for how good it is and how there were so many references I literally couldn’t stop smiling the whole time, but my favorite part is for sure the importance they put on Mario and Luigi’s sibling relationship. Like yeah I wish Luigi got more screen time, but every time he’s not on screen is basically just Mario gushing over how much he loves his brother more than anything in the world and it’s so sweet (plus even while he’s in danger Luigi’s telling Bowser that princesses would find his brother attractive “if they have good taste” lmao). I genuinely got teary eyed when they reunited at the end and shared probably one of the most emotional hugs I’ve ever seen in a movie. Plus Luigi risking his life to save his brother at the end and then getting to share the victory in beating Bowser with Mario… idk I just love how much they made their love for each other known even when they’re separated 😊
That's what I'm saying! It baffles me how nobody else gets this. The moment that Mario saved Luigi, I finally felt myself relax. I hadn't realized that for the whole movie, I was just tensing up because I was eager for them to be ruinited again. On an intellectual level, I know that Mario and Luigi care about each other, but it's hard to feel that through a game screen when there's no real narrative or dialogue. This movie sold me on them being *brothers* for the first time, and I loved that it did. In the future I expect to see them do more together, but I think this one handled it perfectly.
@@NovusIgnis I'm the youngest of three brothers. My brothers still mean the world to me despite all being so far apart, so Mario and Luigi's relationship is very relatable. Luigi is supportive of Mario even when others thought Mario was dragging his little brother into his mistakes, and he looks up to him because Mario was always there for him.
I also loved Luigi defending Mario and completely roasting Bowser with the "good taste" line despite being completely petrified of him. Biggest burn of the entire movie and it gives some credence to Peach's statement at the end about how brave Luigi truly is. On first watch I loved the movie but felt like they destroyed Luigi (my long-time favorite Mario game character), but on the second watch, I noticed details that bolstered him. Love this movie!
I love this movie. I think it's pretty much everything I could have hoped for. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but the simple story of how Mario never gives up, especially for his brother is still heartwarming. And the music, the references and the animation is just a joy! I can't wait for the inevitable sequel!
The musical and visual easter eggs stuffed within the movie truly show that the team truly cared about Nintendo and their intellectual properties. The unreleased concept art further adds to the amazement.
I think my favorite part of the movie was easily the score. It would’ve been really easy to mess up the digital themes when converting them to an orchestral version but oh man they killed it
This was one of the best movies ever made for me. I grew up with Mario. Literally. Have played every game, watch the TV series and seen the awful first movie adaptation. And when I watched the movie, I went with my siblings and my two kids. They all had a blast. My kids watched it three times in a row of just 1 week, each. They loved it so much. And never got tired. I already promised them to get the BluRay / DVD for them, when it drops. And, despite all the worries, Chris Pratt did a stellar job as Mario. :D
I'm surprised you didn't mention that they didn't make Princess Peach a Mary Sue. Some fans were concerned that the writers were going to make her "too powerful", but they actually had a sweet heart-to-heart moment with Mario after the training, explaining that Peach had gotten so good because of the training course, even failing as many times (if not more) as Mario did here. And she doesn't look down on Mario or do the stereotypical "men are stupid" type of personality, but instead really looks out for him and their friendly chemistry is really sweet! :) Overall, I do wish they gave Luigi some more screentime or something to do (like him attempting to escape multiple times and failing or foil some of Bowser's plans in the background), but this was still a fun, energetic, and joyful video game movie to experience! :D
Peach did admit that she got the obstacle course right away, but then justifies that it's because she grew up in this world, which makes sense, seeing how this world is all one big obstacle course. It is great that she doesn't look down on Mario and rather encourages his determination. Also, not having Mario and Peach instantly fall in love was a good way to address the vagueness of their relationship in the games and go beyond just hero saves damsel. They start out as mentor and trainee, then teammates who work together and become good friends who talk and support one another. This is the progress of a more natural relationship... which might even lead to something romantic overtime. And while Luigi could've used more screen time, I love that him and Mario were shown to be very close and supportive of each other as brother. It's shown that Mario and is willing to do anything to protect his little brother and Luigi, despite the odds, always has Mario's back. I love how they are in each other's thoughts even when they're separated, to when they reunite and hug and touch foreheads, it is so stickin' heartwarming, I cried. Also, their team up in the climax it's the most satisfying thing I've seen in cinema since the Endgame final battle.
She has shades of it, but also we see her mess up and fail too like another replier pointed out. I would have personally preferred if they leaned more into how she fits in Smash Bros. and the games cause that's more entertaining and would have set her apart from Mario and DK, but she wasn't that bad. Mostly cause I love thwacking people with random sports/cooking gear as Peach or hucking turnips at them. The bigger issue is they basically gave her all the traits that make Daisy unique so..how do they do Daisy now? More importantly though, they take time out of the movie to show that she's sweet and kind too. Like you said, their friendly chemistry is really sweet and helps to make the girl boss and Mary Sue elements more palatable. Not saying the movie should have been longer (its paced pretty perfectly at its current run time), but it would be nice if they show in the future movies just WHY the toads decided this alien girl deserved to be their princess cause they don't seem like the type to see a bad ass girl and think 'oh yeah, that definitely qualifies her as princess material'.
It is nice to actually see a movie that isn’t trying to say that women are superior to men and men are blumbering idiots. Peaches is plenty strong enough to defend herself, but she also knows her limits. When Bowser came for her in the kingdom, Peaches knew that she couldn’t take him on then and there and her citizens needed to get away safely. Also, I find it funny that she was turned into Elsa for a little bit. Blue dress and ice powers and such
I wouldn’t even say Peach was a bad ass I’d just say she wasn’t useless, and all together at the beginning it shows Mario is used to an obstacle course but he is used to the one he grew up in
You know it's bad when my 53 year old dad, who had a grand total of less than 2 days playing Mario Kart says to me "I really don't like that thing..." I just laughed that even people who know very little about MK know about the damage it can do
14:26 I think a much better post credits scene would be if the mario bros got a call they just hear wario or waluigi laugh since, we already seen yoshis in this movie.
God is so satisfying hearing someone praise the company logo and the effort that got put into their animation rather than sinning them for merely existing.
@@denmark_2172 To be fair, I've been a longtime fan of CinemaSins, but even I can't deny how overly nitpicky Jeremy can be in at least newer Sins videos.
One of the things that stuck out to me is that Mario doesn't (visibly) get hurt until he returns to Brooklyn/our world, where getting tossed around by Bowser leaves him with scratches and bruises, while in the Mushroom Kingdom world all the cartoonish violence he goes through doesn't leave a mark on him. It has some really neat implications about how both worlds differ in function, IMO!
Ok this is the movie I watched three times in theatres and brought on Amazon prime as soon as it was available in Canada! I love it so much! So iconic for me!
I watched this movie in the cinema with my parents, who knew so little about Mario they literally did not know who Luigi was before this movie. And even they loved the movie.
I was actually pretty surprised by how much critics hated this one. I went in not expecting much, but I REALLY enjoyed this one. Brought me back to the days of my profile picture and older in the best ways.
Yeah. It has its flaws sure, but its probably one of the best movies that this studio has made. I think it also comes down to expectations. Most people weren't expecting the Super Mario Bros movie to be a cinematic masterpiece, heck many probably had low expectations for it. Most probably just wanted a solid and fun story that respected the source material, and heck, the movie definitely delivered on that! Its a flawed but fun movie.
It's actually called optimistic nihilism. Basically where you know things are going to hell, and you just wholeheartedly accept that you can't do anything about it. @@PeverellTheThird

The tanuki suit is specifically the base variant from 3D Land. You can tell because it has no scarf. If it were a grey leaf, and he had a scarf on, he could turn into a statue, according to the most recent appearances of the power up.
While Mario and Luigi weren't together for much of the time, we got enough to understand their dynamics, and sequels, and spinoffs will just add to it.
1:31 Charlie Day is part Italian! His paternal grandfather changed the family name from rom Del Giorno to Day, and his Dad is of both Italian and Irish descent.
Honestly, the lumalee was my favorite character. I want it with me always. Overall the score and sound editing were the highlights of this for me. They hit the right mix of nostalgic and refreshed and suited the visuals they were meant for. Not groundbreaking, but a delightful popcorn movie that made me happy to watch. Great win video
I always said that to enjoy this movie you have to take it with consideration of all the games, this movie was made with that in mind and not like other video game adaptations witch try and create a new words, this takes a world and characters you already know and just goes for new take on old story. I love that they kept it simple and went for the brother relationship instead of the expected love between peach and Mario. And the classic themes remixed is amazing.
When I went to see this the first time, the Rainbow Road scene really stressed me out and gave me flashbacks from all the times I’ve fallen off, and then the blue shell when they reached the end of the track was too real 😅😅
I went into this movie expecting another Hollywood basic video game movie adaptation and I only went because my girlfriend wanted to see it. BOY WAS I WRONG. As a standalone movie it works amazingly, as the Super Mario Bros movie it is incredible. A++.
I had my doubts about my movie just because of everything I read online but I loved like every minute of it. I was laughing and smiling and dancing my feet along to the soundtrack and the cinema and loved every single sound effect. It honestly was just a happy little film for me to watch with my siblings who grew up playing Mario on the ds. It was very nostalgic, I didn’t get all the references but my brother definitely did and it was awesome to see him geeking out over the movie
I watched this a couple of days ago for the EGA video. A great video once again! The film was really fun, totally fine, not the average cash grab by Illumination (I had my fears while watching the opening credits). It works like a potpourri (a medley, if you prefer) of some of the favourite tunes of the beloved Italian-American plumber, while still leaving things up for the sequels, like the Fire Flower Power-Up. No need to give it all at once. Jack Black was hilarious and appropriately scary, the animation was really fun, and the voice acting really good! I think that making Mario have to save Luigi was the correct choice for the first Mario outing, since it brings something personal for Mario to fight for, while giving time to cultivate a relationship with Peach to make her kidnapping more "high tension" (under the circumastances) if or when it happens. After all "save the princess you know nothing about" will not work as well as "save your beloved person" as a motive. Although having Mario instantly loose with the Tiny Mushroom Power-Up was kind of a low hanging fruit joke, every Power-Up has its pros and with some fantasy it would make for a fun fight. But maybe that's for the next film(s)? Anyway, keep up the great work and take care!
Just finished watching the movie just in time to see the win score. As a big Mario and Nintendo fan, watching and seeing all of the various game integrations kept me smiling throughout the whole movie. Animation was fluid and well done, the acting was pretty balanced out, and it was pretty simple, but easy to understand plot. Great movie and I liked listening to the Wins you picked out!
16:27 Given your description, my guess is that next week's video is going to be EGA Creed III? Here's a list of suggestions to consider for future EGA videos: -Strange World -Instant Family -The Land Before Time -Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 Film) -The Rugrats Movie -The Lost World: Jurassic Park -South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut -The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition) -Shrek -Ice Age
I did notice one thing you forgot man. At 5:14, the music that plays when Peach is doing the obsticale course, is actually the same theme that was playing in the first KINGSMAN film. ASSpecifically when Colin Firth uses his umbrella to smash a beer mug in a guy's face in that iconic scene !
15:17 Boring? Dude how do people think that's even remotely an accurate description for this movie, it was the most fun film I've watched in years, even putting my nostalgia and Mario fan hype to the side, and the best part is you don't have to be a huge fan of the games to enjoy it! It establishes how similar this world is to the games (both outright and subtly) manages to give the characters a slightly new "feel" without just dropping what makes them the characters, and it SHOWS how threatening of a villain Bowser actually is perfectly, and that's not even to mention that it does character arcs right without outright focusing on them. Also Kamek is hilarious
Watched this film at the cinema with my girlfriend. And I must say I was not disappointed. Having grown up on the OG Super Mario video games, I was really excited to see the film. And it was absolutely brilliant.
I really liked this movie a lot, I even rewatched in the theater (which I NEVER do), and my only real complaint was that I wish there was more. In particular, I think a scene with Luigi and the other prisoners attempting to escape but failing would make his jump to bravery at the end a bit more of a progression than a spike, if that makes sense. Here’s how I would have done it: have a scene about halfway through the movie, maybe before Mario fights DK but after talking to Cranky, where the king penguin leads an escape. They can imply through dialogue that the prisoners have been planning this for a while and are ready to go, but Luigi is still scared. He does go along with it, but eventually he slips up, maybe he freezes and slows the group or gets afraid and doesn’t do a job he was tasked with to get the others out. This leads to them getting recaptured, and everyone is too disheartened to try again. This scene would technically be pointless to the story itself, but I think it would be good for Luigi’s character as it directly contrasts his line at the start of the movie when Mario tells him he can’t be scared all the time but he insists he can. A scene where his fear stopped him from escaping would show direct consequences to that line of thinking, and give him the realization that Mario was right, and he has to be brave sometimes. Then at the end when Mario is in danger, Luigi realizes he can’t let his fear freeze him again, so he does what he has to, even if he is afraid. I dunno, that’s just my take on it
The most Badass version of Princess peach I've ever seen in the franchise Huge respect for the writters not making her the damsel in distress and best version of her!
16:36 My whole theater was laughing at this scene! Is was unexpected and me and my family both were shocked about this because I play the saxophone and this is just año point for the movie!
I LOVED that this movie is an absolute exercise in "Yes And" mentality. At no point is someone told they can't do something. It might be hard, it might be scary but no one is told no you can't, except for Bowser forcing Peach to marry him. Autonomy for the win!
Genuinely adored this movie. It clearly loved the source material and was the most fun I’ve had at the theater in awhile. Will definitely buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out.
I love this channel and see why so many others do too. I've come to appreciate movies overall since becoming addicted to your content. And have adopted your take on cinematic creations. 3:38 Missed a win: Level 1-2 is where the Warp Zone was in the original game, and it’s where the warp pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom is in New York! The attention to detail in this movie is insane
An absolute banger of a film and just a fantastic screen adaption of the games we love so much. Anya Taylor-Joy really shone in this one and The soundtrack was impeccable. Asking nicely if you would cinema wins "A Man Called Otto" with Tom Hanks? I really do love that movie
I'll be honest, I had doubts about this movie at first but I loved it after watching it in theaters with a friend. I think this could lead to a beginning of a cinematic universe.
Yeah. In the 2D games you generally cant stomp on the Piranha plants but in most 3D mario games like Super Mario 3D world, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super mario Galaxy you can stomp on them willy nilly.

The best part is that she was supposed to just be the scratch voice for the storyboards but everyone liked her so much that they just kept her
What? Really? That's awesome!
That happens. Like with Edna from The Incredibles.
My family always shouts HEYO but the thing is we are definitely not Italian 😅
They are from Brooklyn
@@jacobschiller4486 Yeah. 3rd generation Italian-Americans living in Brooklyn. Still Italian.
My new headcanon is that Peach actually clears the courses until the very end because a toad got kidnapped and they had just reset their defenses to try and stop you
Never thought about that.
What? No win for "Do princesses find him attractive? They do if they have good tastes!" Luigi is the best brother ever.
Movie"!*
@@Draezeth Damn straight, bro!
My favorite lines in the movie.
Either that or he had so many Mushrooms his durability increased more maybe even giving him the same type of agility Peach has normally
yeah! and once he and luigi get the star, all his injuries vanish, like it healed him.
I love that the movie was mainly centered towards the brotherly relationship of Mario and Luigi, we don't have too many movies like this whereas the older sibling is usually dominating over the younger sibling and bullying them for it
As an older brother myself I try to be fair in terms of status towards my lil bro
Glad they didn’t go cannon

Too bad Luigi is completely off to the sides for almost the entirety of the movie, to be a "damsel in distress."

(You can tell I fucking hate this movie)
@@pitaalfereti58 well that’s kinda how he is in the games, a ghost.
One thing I loved, at 3:15, Luigi picked out all the mushrooms because Mario doesn't like them
Fun note (idk if you got it, I'm at 13:20): Mario doesn't take bruises or anything during his time in the land of Peach and the Kongs and such, but he gets bruises in the real world against Bowser
So power ups can absorb at least one hit before reverting back to normal (aside from the star) in the mushroom kingdom?
The highlight of this movie for me personally was the score. The way the classic Mario songs were integrated was great and hearing Gusty Garden Galaxy at the end brought back great memories. Hats off to Brian Tyler
I heartfully agree!😁 The thing that caught my attention the most besides the references was the music and how well the composer orchetralized the original songs, and then of course it's Brian Tyler aswell!
@@Aiden-MGR they were brilliantly done, though I do kinda wish that the licensee music didn’t replace some of the original score

So, I work at a movie theater, and one of the things we do is give speeches about the movie before each showing. This can extend to private showings as well, so, I got volunteered to do a speech for a private showing of this movie for a birthday party of a bunch of kids. I wonder if that's foreshadowing. 🤔

I have a small correction for you, you CAN stomp piranha plants in 3d world.
Killing a piranha plant this way is necessary to turn back on new donk city's power.

you can stomp on them in the 3D Mario games. not so much in the 2D games
the best way I can describe it is that it's like a lazy river (which for those of you who don't know is a type of pool that's basically a looping stretch of water with a slow current that you just relax in as the current carries you around in a circle)
It's not that big, it's not that deep, but what's there is enjoyable if you want to just relax for a while
This still confuses me.
While also being an amazing tribute to LEGO (I should know, as a hardcore fan),

Kinda like how Luigi reacted to a maskless Shy Guy in Mario Power Tennis.
Also, at Peaches wedding, when she's walking out. A piranha licks its lips at her 😂

Yes, Bob-ombs are infact sentient. They have been ever since Super Mario 64. They were actually one of the first non-unique enemies confirmed sentient, tied with Koopas.

Mario is often referred to as small and mentions himself feeling small in the movie. Bowser is the tallest and looms over everyone. By the end of the movie, Bowser is the smallest compared to everyone. Thought that was a clever way to end it that you probably won't realize until you think about it.
Yeah, it really was clever! Just goes to show those people that shamed him that anyone could be small!
Did anyone else notice the awesome musical transition from Sex Bob-Omb back to the Mario Movie at 6:16? Like, that was kind of amazing! Plus, I love Scott Pilgrim, so that makes it even better.
That moment in te Nintendo logo when Luigi repaid Mario by jumping on his head made my heart swell. Never change, boys.
14:00 - *“It lasts for 30 seconds, and then it's gone.”*
If you think about it, there's a reason why this power-up in particular has to be time-limited, _besides_ the fact that it would be way too OP: Unlike all the other power-ups, you can't lose it from being hit, because it makes you _invulnerable._
we've seen that vomiting can expel a power-up from your body, so I assume the star just works like a drug, the high eventually wears off
3:35 that is such a smart easter egg, props to the animators for that one
Only complaint is no win for the
Bowser: "Do princesses find him attractive?"
Luigi: "They do if they have good taste!"
line. Though a general best brother win does cover that whole interaction with Bowser pulling Luigi's mustache.
Biggest burn of the entire movie and I completely missed it on the first viewing!
He also forgot to say and follow through with “ Charles Martinet is always a win”
Ok long take always counts. It might not be quite as difficult as live-action, but mapping out the scene and keeping it smooth by not abusing the infinite angles you have is pretty frickin impressive.
Tried to say exactly this myself, think you did a better job
I know there were a lot of wins for the score, but it really can't be oversold enough. They threw in literally 2 seconds of the final boss theme of Mario Galaxy for no reason aside from "it worked for that scene;" there's clearly SO much passion behind it
I love how they portrayed the brothers' relationship, absolutely beautiful!! I teared up when they did the Spirited Away floating thing
Fun fact about 1:12
The eyepatch actually has a tactical advantage. By covering one eye, you can remove the eyepatch when entering a dark area or room, and the one eye under the patch will already be used to the darkness. Giving you a natural "night vision"
nah it's definitely just to look cool
Something that I think deserves a mention is while the bo-bomb is running through Bowsers ship, you can catch a bunch of Koopas and a Goomba reacting to what's underneath a shy-guys mask. It can be seen in the video on the right side of the screen if anyone wants to look for it.
Left side
11:52 cute little detail, the bob-omb in the wedding bows to King Bob-omb, as he is the king of the bob-omb, and like a good loyal bob-omb, it respects the king.
Also when he "sits down" you can see King Boo phase through an annoyed Goomba
The Luigi’s Mansion movie will be everything I’ve dreamed of. I can feel it.
Yes, please! With either John Carpenter or Danny Elfman to do the soundtrack.
Another fun fact I didn’t know, Charles wasn’t just canoeing in the pizzarea, but he’s also Mario’s father!

Yea this movies a blast
I'm surprised you didn't mention that they didn't make Princess Peach a Mary Sue.
Some fans were concerned that the writers were going to make her "too powerful", but they actually had a sweet heart-to-heart moment with Mario after the training, explaining that Peach had gotten so good because of the training course, even failing as many times (if not more) as Mario did here. And she doesn't look down on Mario or do the stereotypical "men are stupid" type of personality, but instead really looks out for him and their friendly chemistry is really sweet! :)
Overall, I do wish they gave Luigi some more screentime or something to do (like him attempting to escape multiple times and failing or foil some of Bowser's plans in the background), but this was still a fun, energetic, and joyful video game movie to experience! :D
I'm pretty sure incels are still gonna be uncomfortable with Peach being a badass

@bullsonparade171 YO! Dennis Hopper was President Koopa in the original Mario movie.
Yeah!!
I thought it was really fun too
@@Jermare Yeah but against 95% audience score... That is a huge gap between critics and audience
The Luminee star was my favorite. It's random depressing optimism was hilarious and I couldn't not laugh every single time it spoke
"depressing optimism"?
It's actually called optimistic nihilism. Basically where you know things are going to hell, and you just wholeheartedly accept that you can't do anything about it. @@PeverellTheThird
@@PeverellTheThird For a nihilist, depression would be optimism.
@@gazelle_diamond9768For a nihilist, depression is depression because A = A and A can’t equal not-A. Plenty of nihilists are also just not depressed, so I’m not sure what nihilism really has to do with anything.
@@Leith_Crowther ...I'm... not even gonna argue...
Thank you. I was looking for someone to say that.
Hard to find anyone who _doesn’t_ dread getting Blue-Shelled while on _any_ Rainbow Road.
@@vidmanandrew09 True. I’ve definitely gotten better at staying on the track, but those dang blue shells are the bane of my existence on ANY course
I went into this movie expecting another Hollywood basic video game movie adaptation and I only went because my girlfriend wanted to see it. BOY WAS I WRONG. As a standalone movie it works amazingly, as the Super Mario Bros movie it is incredible. A++.
The references, the soundtrack, the Easter eggs, and the animation are my most favorite parts of this movie!
6:20 If you played Paper Mario, you would know that Bob-bombs do have functiong brains.
The ONE thing that made me super sad was Peach's use of King Bobomb, he didn't deserve to be blown up for being a supportive friend 💣
Here's a list of suggestions to consider for future EGA videos:
-Strange World
-Instant Family
-The Land Before Time
-Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 Film)
-The Rugrats Movie
-The Lost World: Jurassic Park
-South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
-The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition)
-Shrek
-Ice Age
I did notice one thing you forgot man. At 5:14, the music that plays when Peach is doing the obsticale course, is actually the same theme that was playing in the first KINGSMAN film. ASSpecifically when Colin Firth uses his umbrella to smash a beer mug in a guy's face in that iconic scene !
4:41 I mean, Toad is giving you the double birds in the OG mario.
9:59 Peach got that cake she was baking for Mario
DUDE
So glad you’re doing this movie! You always catch things I miss and make me appreciate things I took for granted.
This is far and away one of the coolest movies I've ever seen.
4:02 also happened in the Lego Movie, wich also stars Chris Pratt!🗣🔥
I dunno, that’s just my take on it
The most Badass version of Princess peach I've ever seen in the franchise
Huge respect for the writters not making her the damsel in distress and best version of her!
I also love how she acted like a compassionate princess as well. Wanting what was best for her kingdom and helping out everyone who needed it
Honestly thought it made more sense for Mario to save Luigi. Why would he be so worried about saving a girl he barely knows
Paper Mario: ...
You wanna see a Peach more badass than this, read the Super Mario Adventures comic
You can also try out Super Princess Peach, where Peach and Mario's roles are switched!
16:36 My whole theater was laughing at this scene! Is was unexpected and me and my family both were shocked about this because I play the saxophone and this is just año point for the movie!
Año?
Mario also plays the saxophone on the Mario 3D World soundtrack cover art
I LOVED that this movie is an absolute exercise in "Yes And" mentality. At no point is someone told they can't do something. It might be hard, it might be scary but no one is told no you can't, except for Bowser forcing Peach to marry him. Autonomy for the win!
Genuinely adored this movie. It clearly loved the source material and was the most fun I’ve had at the theater in awhile. Will definitely buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out.
This film is incredible. I cant wait for a sequel
Also, did anyone spot the Pikin reference?
I love this channel and see why so many others do too. I've come to appreciate movies overall since becoming addicted to your content. And have adopted your take on cinematic creations. Most of all I love coming across videos you've done on movies that i didn't particularly like. Regardless of personal perspective or bias there are things in any movie, especially the ones you hate, that are still great and deserve appreciation. Thank you.
I hope we get an EGA on Batman '89 and Superman the Movie at some point. Especially with the Flash coming out this month.
I'll be honest, I had doubts about this movie at first but I loved it after watching it in theaters with a friend.
I think this could lead to a beginning of a cinematic universe.
You can actually stomp on Piranha Plants sometimes, it depends on the game and the situation.
Yeah. In the 2D games you generally cant stomp on the Piranha plants but in most 3D mario games like Super Mario 3D world, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super mario Galaxy you can stomp on them willy nilly.
I saw this movie 4 times, and I regret nothing!
This movie was so nostalgic! When I saw this in theaters, I could not sit still!
