I was looking at the Invicta and my Son gave me the Orient Ray 2 in black. With a good NATO strap it's my daly wear, great watch Would highly recommend it.
Enjoyed the video cheers, my first choice would be the Orient I really don't know how they make such a great watch for the price point. I have a Mako Mk1 and it runs within COSC standards it is as accurate as my Rolex GMT Master and that is staggering. Second choice would be the Seiko 5 they also offer outstanding value for money and they are very easy to modify with a plethora of mod options available. I would never purchase another quartz watch, nothing wrong with them I just prefer the magic of a mechanical.
Thanks for watching and the feedback I appreciate it. I like quartz watches for a number of reasons, though certainly not as much as I like mechanical. I plan on doing a quartz vs mechanical watch video discussing my thoughts on that at some point in the future. That said, for this video, I had to put a few quartz pieces on the list if I was trying to stay under the $200 price point.
I have the Invicta 8926OB and the Invicta 8926BRB and although I would prefer that the “Invicta” engraving wasn’t there, it doesn’t really bother me. I think that it’s a bit of an exaggeration to describe the engraving on the side of the case as “in great big letters” when in fact the lettering is only 2.25mm high.
I've never scratched a crystal. I don't know if I'm extremely careful, lucky, or if it's really not that big a risk as people make it out to be. That said I did have a watch stored in a box for like 10 years with a bunch of random stuff, and I took that over to a local watch shop and had the crystal replaced for $25, so even if you do scratch the crystal it's not the end of the world.
Exact. For the price of the Orient, an additional $25 sounds right. I do not know if am very unlucky or clumsy but I always scratched the crystal of every Seiko 5 I had :-(
All solid suggestions here. The Submariner, being probably the #2 most timeless/identifiable watch out there, it is highly replicated and imitated. Under $200 is pretty restrictive as an alternative to a roughly $8,000 watch, but there are decent options. There are even more quality options if you jump up to around $500-$1,500. I like the idea for the video though.
I might do similar video's at different price tiers in the future. The problem is my lack of personal experience with the majority of the watches at the $500+ price range. I'd just be offering my speculation at that point, which may still be valid I suppose. What do you think?
Wow, Just Blue Fish, you knocked it out of the Ball Park on this one. Have all of them, except the Pulsar. Invicta holds the top prize, the greatest homages, with a quality Seiko mvmt. Fit and Finish is very good. Casio Marlin is a beauty. Give Seiko 5 high marks and it's often mistaken for a Rolex. As to the Orient, the fit and finish was dull and just had a strange feel on the wrist. The Invicta (or Orient) makes a nice gift for a friend who has never owned a mechanical, nor aware of the Submariner classic style.
Thanks JP, I appreciate the comments. I think with the Casio vs Pulsar they're so similar it's an either/or proposition. No real sense it getting both since they're so similar with the exception of case diameter. The Orient Ray I had, and previously reviewed, did end up as a gift for my father. He's quite happy with it, it does make a great gift.
My Phoibos 300m quartz Sub homage is absolutely perfect in fit, finish, looks, fit, lume, and accuracy. Really great watch, only $119 on Amazon. Love that watch, better than my genuine Rolex Sub. Really. Thanks.
That's the PY002 variant I think, and I was all set to buy one until...I started researching it. It's terrific and even better since It's been revised sometime after your post. The one that's catching my eye now is the PY007. But it's pretty pricey at $300.00. I'm hoping I can catch one in good shape used. Wish me luck...
Thanks, appreciate it. The Orient is quite nice, especially considering the price. Of course it's not the quality you'd expect from the Rolex but I was impressed with it. Check out my previous review video on it if you haven't. I'd love to get a little hands on time with a Submariner. I'm not sure if I want to buy one after buying and selling my Rolex Explorer. I don't want to make another $1000+ mistake, but it's hard to know if you're gonna love a watch until you have an opportunity to wear it for a little while. Just checking it out in a store never tells the whole story.
Blue Fish - Good point as to Rolex $1k mistakes after the fact. Thinking about a new Rolex Explorer ($6,000) or pre owned near mint Sub ($5,000). There's no way in hell I'm spending close to $8k for a new Sub. R greed is out of control.
Off the top of my head, no not anything very affordable. The Tudor Blackbay would be an option, and while it's cheaper than the Sub, it's still quite expensive. I can't think of any no-date budget friendly options though.
I have had a Stainless Steel Steel Dakota ( Berenger) Q3, watch for the last 15 years and the only thing I've had to do was replace the battery and band. I've taken diving but only to 15' with it and I did chip the crystal on it about two weeks ago, but I've worn it every day working and off.
*Invicta offers an automatic model too, I have tho a 30$ GMT MASTER automatic by MADISON®™ and one $10 made by SOKI®™ but TEVISE®™ make nice inexpensive ROLEX®™ hommages too*
Cheers, great choices. I have the Seiko Sea Urchin and could not recommend it enough. It would be great if you could do one of this alternative videos for the Rolex Explorer. I know you were obsessed with the Explorer as I am now and I know a lot of people are looking for something to scratch their itch below the 500 $ mark.
I just got the Seiko SNZF17 SEa Urchin on loan from a viewer, so stay tuned for a review of that watch in the not to distant future. I'll see if I can put together a list for some Explorer alternatives too. Thanks!
The Orient is a great choice. Japanese made with in-house automatic movement that is hand winding and hackable. I haven't owned a Ray or Mako, but my wife, son and I each have Orient watches and we all give them a lot of wrist time.
I don't have as much experience with Orient as with Seiko, I've only had 3 Orient watches now, but all 3 of them have exceeded similarly priced Seiko watches in my opinion. Not by a ton mind you, but they're quite good.
Your video is spot on. Having once been somewhat disappointed by another Rolex I bought (though the build quality was excellent), there was no way I would spend € 8000 (here in Europe) for a SubMariner straight from the AD shopwindow. But I needed to scratch this Submariner itch and bought the Seiko SNZF17. € 117 delivered on my doorstep, feels reasonnably heavy and solid on the wrist, + 5 sec/day and it looks the part with the applied dots, even if not circled in white gold. I really recommand considering this watch, which sits in a different territory from the hardcore SKX diver (which I also own)
The SNZF is one I'd like to check out at some point. I was confident in recommending it even though I haven't seen it because of my experience with other Seiko watches, and while it's not a 200m ISO certified divers watch, I still felt like it's a pretty good value and something a person should consider if they're in the market for this style watch. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it.
The Ray II is unbelievable value, and looks far classier than most any alternative I could name (not leat the SKX ... which, if you want a dive watch for ACTUAL DIVING, is a good, cheap option; but not particularly stylish (despite having a unique style), imho). Is there anywhere in particular you would recommend getting a sapphire crystal for the Ray II from?? Cheers
Thanks for watching I appreciate it. Regarding getting a crystal, I’m not sure, I’ve never done mods on my watches. The Random Rob channel might be a good place to look, he’s done a fair bit of watch mods.
In case you still haven't found it, long island watches have a modded version of the Orient with sapphire crystal on their website. /watch?v=JY1aDzWZrA8&t=261s
I own an older Invicta Pro Diver and it is much closer. "Invicta" is not engraved on the side, the logo is not raised or at all represented on the crown. The logo is also absent on the second hand. Unfortunately it's pretty dinged up. Great watch though.
@@JustBlueFish I just got mine and it is TERRIFIC. Anybody who says otherwise, is somebody trying to be a snob and playing to lose since THEIR overpriced alternative is also "not" a Subby, so therefore, IMO, the proverbial miss is as good as the proverbial mile.
I would go Orient too! I have the Blue Mako 2. The only difference is the dial. The case and movement is the same. The biggest weakness for Orient is the weak crystals they have on them. The edge will chip very easy. In other words, their mineral crystals are complete crap!. That can be easily fixed with a saffire crystal install though!
Thanks for watching and the comments Robert. When I bought one, I had a difficult time choosing between the Mako and the Ray. Very. They are America's oldest watch company, creator of the world's most accurate quartz watch, and one of the only watches to have ever been on the moon. In my experience only one of two companies that regularly send their reps to the stores to ensure quality control, product knowledge, watch tools, and service to the sales people. Very decent watches.
Or maybe it says: I value different things in life other than a fucking watch...i dunno like a car, a house or just having an overall higher quality life instead of a piece of metal in my arm that looks exactly like the one I bought for a fraction of the price.
There's virtue in not putting so much of your liquid assets on your arm that someone will chop your arm off with a machete (and take the entire arm, watch and all) in order to feed their opiod habit or their family. I can afford a Submariner. I just won't own one. I feel the same way about Diamonds being hoarded by the Mack dump truckload just to shore up their value. It's not "supply and demand" it's FAKE Supply and demand I won't feed that Cancer on all of us. It might well be an "Object D'Art". But that doesn't mean people who choose not to afford one are somehow "inferior". Goes for ill-designed, maintenance-needy British Sports Cars as well.
I don’t understand why more people do not feel this way. If you do this with cars (paint a Fiat Ferrari red and slapping a logo that is almost the same on it) people will laugh at you for being a poser. I am not talking about the black bezel dive look ofc. With all due respect these are not Rolex alternatives. Alternative implies a choice of watch in the same category with same specifications and looks but not necessarily price. Interesting how folks get mad at the side-engraving on Invicta but no one minds the stupid "ROLEXROLEXROLEXRO..." engraving on the inside around the dial of the submariner.
Is it interesting? Because it seems pretty obvious why to me. One of these things is a huge, tacky, eyesore on the side of the watch case you can't not see. The other is a tiny detail that requires 20/20 or better vision to even notice and at an arms length away you can't see it at all. But yeah I guess if you are just looking for hyperbolic comparisons, this makes sense.
I prefer the SKX007 too, but generally it's not under $200 and I think it's so uniquely different than a Submariner that it's not really fair to put it on this list. Most people when looking for a cheap alternative to a Submariner are looking for something aesthetically similar, which most of these watches are. The SKX stands on it's own as a design.

I just bought the Invicta Pro Diver and I absolutely adore it so far. I don't even mind the branding on the side.
That's a great little watch, can't beat it for the money.
