Sadly, R.I.P. Edward Herrmann. He and Jane Alexander were brilliant in this mini-series.
I remember watching this mini series in 1976 when I was 12 and becoming absolutely enchanted by Jane Alexander. She was extraordinary. Rosemary Murphy accurately portrayed the dragon that Sara Delano Roosevelt was. Holy moly! This was made back when the mini series was a new form of storytelling. This, along with "Roots" and "Backstairs at the White House" was one of my faves.
Sorry to intrude but it's always nice to find someone who shares an opinion. I'm afraid I was considerably older than 12 when I watched this mini series but I was equally fascinated. I'm not an American but have always had the greatest respect for FDR and Eleanor and like you say the mini series was a new and fulfilling entertainment vehicle at the time. Wish I could see it and Backstairs again.
@@deriter64 I remember watching this, too - the actors were very popular in the 1970s, and it's fun to see their faces here again. I would have been 14 at the time.

I saw this TV series years ago.I loved it. It was my introduction to Jane Alexander who I greatly admire. You Americans should be ashamed that you don't do quality TV like this any more.

Back when Television mini-series were at their zenith. This one was one of the best. Jane Alexander was just spectacular. Sara Delano Roosevelt was one difficult woman. Teddy always felt badly for Eleanor....his younger brother, her father, dying young of alcoholism and her mother dying young as well....as his OWN 1st wife Alice did.....they made a sequel to this series specifically dealing with their 3+terms in office but there was a sequel book (also by Joseph P Lash)....about Eleanor's years alone. Never filmed. Would have loved to see Jane in it.

Loved this mini-series when it came out. Will miss Ed Hermann (R.I.P). Jane Alexander's best work alongside her role in The Great White Hope. Rosemary Murphy impressed me as Sarah Delano Roosevelt in her Emmy-winning role. A program, along with Roots, for the ages.
I LOVED this mini series. I feel it was Jane Alexander's best work. They had her looking so much like Eleanor, it was uncanny. And Ed Herrmann did a great job as well. They matched perfectly in that film. I own both series, Book 1, my favorite because it was their love story and book 2 ,The White House Years. Also, John Barry IS my favorite with film scores, followed by Henry Mancini. Barry's score for this film was perfect because of the way he tied both centuries together. I also just love the way it sounds. I found it one day looking through all of his work, then went to Amazon and ordered both films. If you haven't checked out the title credits, go there to hear the theme. Also FDR Jr. was a story consultant to the film. Interesting to me for sure.

Sara thought that was her right as their only living parent. Poor Eleanor, who not only didn't have a living mother nor happy memories of her only family went along with her mother-in-law because she really didn't have a choice. Only when Franklin became ill did she find her own voice - and keep it. With the children, though, she never had an ideal relationship.
Grandmother Hall told Eleanor she didn't have to follow through on the marriage. Eleanor knew what her life would be, made her bed and had to lie in it.

Jane Alexander very enthusiastically joined the cast of the more recent "Warm Springs" as Sara Roosevelt, completing the circle one might say. She noted it was great to explore some other elements "Eleanor and Franklin" hadn't time to do. It should be noted that Sara was not all heartless and controlling...She was an affectionate grandmother and did show Eleanor great sympathy in several crises.
This miniseries is available from Netflix. I highly recommend it.
Franklin's mother didn't want him to marry Eleanor.
@cookieshopgirl What's worse is that when FDR and Eleanor got married, Sara Roosevelt built a house that connected to theirs, so poor Eleanor had to see that bitch of a mother-in-law almost every day.
Not only that, Sara also furnished and staffed the house, which upset Eleanor terribly. Franklin didnt understand why she was so upset.
@cookieshopgirl I think it was a little more complicated than that. Sara Delano was used to getting her own way. Eleanor, at this point of her life, was still very much an undefined character. Interesting to note that until the day she died (only a few years before her son), Sara controlled FDR's money. That can't be easy for any wife to live with.
Fortunately for Eleanor, she had independent income sources from Hall, Ludlow, Livingston and Roosevelt trusts which were more than the annual income her husband brought to the marriage.
Sara reportedly threatened to cut him off financially if he did not give up Lucy Mercer.
true. her mother didn't like her, since she wasn't 'beautiful' as a child. her father was an alcoholic. something weird went on with her uncles, she had one aunt, her aunt bamy, who did all she could to get her out of the house. she didn't know how to be a mother and nurture her own children. from what i've read, she did seem to have a much better relationship with some of her grand children.

Brian K I remember Irene Tedrow from many character parts on TV and in movies from the 1970s. For some reason she always made me think of Jessica Tandy. Not as attractive but the same type of presence. She could have played Tandy’s cousin or sister.
Why is a wedding song normally reserved for the end procession at a wedding used for the arrival of the bridge here?
I like to remember Edward Herrmann best jumping on a bed with a bunch of girls in "Intolerable Cruelty" in front of a movie about trains.

She is, but the movie covers 40 years of her life. I guess they had to get someone not too young.
At 4:58 we learn my father was right. All TR knew how to do was jump up and down and shout "bully, bully."
There was infinitely more to Teddy than that.

No offense, but the actress playing Eleanor seems like she's a little too old for the part.
maybe watch the series before you comment. It's told in flashback (there is a moment in this excerpt when you see her aged next to the body of FDR). Structurally, there are three other young actresses playing her ages 2-16 or so, including Mackenzie Phillips as the teenage Eleanor. Jane Alexander then takes over and plays her from about age 20 to 60.
