I was only 13 when this aired and recorded the theme on my tape recorder when they repeated it. Eventually the tape broke, but the memories remain. How I would love to go back to 1976 again, a magical time.
While I was no fan of FDR and his administration, I understood very well why Americans admired him. They did a great job in this series of capturing the whole essence of him and his struggles and family.
Absolutely loved the tv series. How times have changed, this was first rate tv, not like the garbage that is being foisted upon us now. I just wish I could watch the series again in its entirety.
John Barry captures the essence of the great relationship between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, two people whose legacy remains a strong and viable part of American society. Both Franklin and Eleanor were wealthy but were dedicated to helping those in need that we still benefit from today. Occasionally someone shows up who makes a difference well beyond their own lives. Eleanor and Franklin were among those greats that will forever be enshrined in the collective memory of the American people.
What a great theme. Helped spurred my interest in Eleanor and Franklin as a teenager. Especially since it was filmed partly in Washington state, from the ball scene filmed at Seattle's Olympic Hotel to the house at Gravelly Lake, south of Tacoma, which posed as there summer home on Campobello Island.
I remember being entranced by this TV series when it aired. The music was so beautiful and just underscored the thrust of the whole series...I never will forget it!
it looks like all the people making comments are old. LOL. me too. I was 11 when I saw this series. I loved the theme so much I recorded the theme on my tape recorder so I could listen to it again. (long before the internet and you tube). Edward Hermann r.i.p. he also played FDR in the movie Annie 1982
It doesn't get much better than this! A majestic and beautiful theme by one of the masters of cinema music- Mr. John Barry for an unforgettable mini-series!
I remember that sequence vividly, along with the call back to it in the “White House Years.” Beautifully done and scored, with just the right amount of melancholy.
I still remember watching this Great Movie back in 1976. It introduced me to the Late Edward Herrman & Jane Alexander. I also watched the Sequel one year simply titled " Eleanor & Franklin - The White House Years. Great Television all around.
Barry's score is so grand and majestic and yet not bombastic. It's terribly sad they don't care much about music anymore in today's television, its always last thought. They forgot just how much it can add to a program
Kathy : I too have the Roosevelts on DVD. For me apart from the real Franklin D. Roosevelt the actor Edward Herrman will always remain the best FDR that has been stage, screen, or television.
This easily ranks with out of Africa or somewhere in time as Barry's best music. His stuff is unforgettable. Sort of like Mancini most of it sounds the same, but that's a good thing.
Interesting to listen for musical phrases from this composition that are also found in other Barry efforts. Dances with Wolves? Considerable similarities.
To perpetual 61:Don't forget the mini-series Roots,Rich Man,Poor Man,Centennial, Jesus Of Nazareth & special movies Judge Horton & The Scottsboro Boys & The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case starring Anthony Hopkins as Bruno Hauptmann. All those TV movies came out in 1976.Great year for quality drama on the commercial networks of the time which sadly we'll never see again.
To Perpetual 61:I was saddened to hear of Edward Herrmann's passing. The last thing I recalled he did was ironically being a narrator on the Ken Burns documentary on the Roosevelt's.I hope you saw it like I did & enjoyed it immensely.
I've never seen this on TV here in the UK. I remember Yorkshire Television (region) showing it on Sunday afternoon but the reception I got wasn't really good for the eyes and there was a 'buzz' on the sound. As far as I know my region never showed it and it's never been repeated. Hopefully, one of these channels we have will pick it up sooner or later. Or will they?
I don't know how international rules may affect web access but here in the U.S. both the original miniseries and the sequel are available to view free on the internet. The precise search terms for each are: Eleanor and Franklin (1976 television movie) Pinterest Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years ( tv 1977 ) UA-cam.
Yes. I agree. I found both on YT but one is 3 hours 23 mins and the follow-up 2 hours 35. I couldn't watch for half that time. 'War Between The Tates' is a better (and shorter!)

I did the same thing. It was hard to do too!
@@JohnPTwigg It's heartwarming some other silly kid did the same thing as I did. Thank you for sharing.

John Barry is the best
I’ve searched for this music for so long. Thank you.
Absolutely loved the tv series. How times have changed, this was first rate tv, not like the garbage that is being foisted upon us now. I just wish I could watch the series again in its entirety.
It's very easy to order the DVD on online sites.
I watched it here on youtube. Loved it

Edward Herrman's portrayal of FDR was perfect.

Me too. I’m glad you were as inspired as I was. ❤

Darrell Jones yes, me too. I remember thinking it was fun to talk like Eleanor. I was 13 at the time.

Fantastic series I was in my teens and I loved it beautiful music and fantastic acting
The most beautiful ,elegant, majestic and nostalgic music ever created..
Beautiful and entertaining

Great music, great miniseries. God I miss the 70s.
There is one scene where they are at a elegant party and the crowd is waltzing to this main theme. Nice touch

It's amazing how that one show had such an impact. I've always loved it, and fell in love with music.

I love this theme song and the series, it has a sad and happy theme.
Still moves me after all theses years. Reminds me of the many people I’ve lost since I first saw this beautiful series. 😢
I have it on DVD--love it!

I watched the complete Early Years but don't remember where I found it. Every version I find ends with their wedding day. That's not the end of it.

I agree Television was something Special back then.
Lamont Burton the networks treated us right back then. Four channels was all we needed.

The first series was quite well received back in the day. However, looking at it now, it reeks of typical U.S. TV movie fodder from the '70's.
