Family (1976) ABC - Kate has Nancy's number

- Wonderful mother/daughter moment from "Family" starring Sada Thompson and Meredith Baxter Birney. From the 1976-77 episode "Coming of Age". Nancy's been acting the fool, simultaneously leading on two different men, and taking advantage of the family's goodwill. By the end of the episode, Nancy's feeling ashamed and lets her guard down. Kate steps in with her patented motherly wisdom.
Easy to see why Sada Thompson won Emmys in this role. The writing's not bad and both women do it full justice. Meredith is particularly appealing showing her character's seldom-seen softer side.
Seasons 1 & 2 are available from Sony. Let's hound them into releasing the rest of the series, or gang up on Shout! Factory and get them to take over!

This was such a classy show. Shows like this had a slower pace and were allowed to develop their compelling characters.
Sada Thompson always ROCKED!! A wonderful actress!!! Rest In Peace, Sada.
She absolutely did rock, didn't she.
@@nspectorI absolutely concur.
This is magnificent, isn't it. This show has stayed in my consciousness since I was a little girl, before I could even fully understand all that they were talking about.
Also, note the lighting and color in this scene. It's pitch perfect.
Ditto! I was only 5 when this show premiered in 1976 and it has stayed with me for decades. This show was on in the house growing up, I watched it until the end 1980 without ever really understanding the depth and nuance. Today (as a writer at the age of 51) my core has been heavily influenced by this sense of family and drama and love. Words cannot describe how much I love this show.
The Mom on this show was depicted so well. She was like the mother you could always go to but also the mother who would tell it like it is without any b.s. !
"Melt me down and butter your biscuits" I love that one.
I love the acting in "family", specially Sada Thompson. What a powerhouse she is. She conveys so much emotion and what a classy lady.
Family is a beautiful show and I am happy to know it was well liked.
Sada Thompson one classy lady, and a hell of an actress. Rest In Peace.
Amen
She's dead???
Yes. She died in 2011.
Sada was brilliant! May she Rest In Peace.
I love at 3:29 she looks right at camera, and almost breaks the fourth wall. The scene was done so perfectly, that's possibly why they decided to use the take.
Yes, I see what you mean.
Oh that is weird. Actors almost never look directly at the camera in scenes like this.
Oh, wow, you're right! Almost, but not quite. She *was* absolutely brilliant.
As a kid in the 70s, I always thought the mother was creepy and annoying, but as an adult, I can appreciate her. :-) In fact, now I realize Nancy and Willie were the REAL problems in that household. :-O
Facts
She has a great resonant voice and commanding presence. Of course she came from Broadway. :-)
Sada Thompson made this show for me; she played a wonderful mother. I was the same age as Meredith Baxter (Nancy) when this show aired; I watched it religiously. I was a young woman going through a divorce with a baby...I truly related with a lot of the scripts. RIP Sada, you were everyone's loving mom... :-)
Oh, wow, Eidann, that was an age, and situation, where you could really understand it. I was still a girl. I loved it to death, but I knew later that there was much that went over my head. I just found it streaming, and am rewatching. It was really an amazingly well done show.
@@nspector 💃🎈💕👍
@@Eidann63 Ah! Didn't think you'd see my comment seven years later. Nice!
Beautiful chemistry between the two of them in this scene. And to show you Sada Thompson's acting range, my parents saw her on Broadway in a very disturbing play called The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds about a very dysfunctional family where Thompson plays a brutally verbally abusive mother. My parents said she was terrifying !
Brilliant television, brilliant writing, and of course, incredibly brilliant Sada. Love that almost breaking the fourth wall.
Grew up in the 60s & 70s, i miss those days, i loved the theme music to "Family" and the show. 📺
RIP Sada Thompson-you were one of the great ones
Powerfully beautiful scene!
this show brings back sooo many memories. it takes me back to what seemed to be a better world.
I remember this coming on Friday nights I believe. I was 4 or 5. I remember sitting on the couch with my mom watching it. Very vivid memory and now special memory.
I was such a fan of this show it should have ran a 6th season🙂
I just found out that Sada Thompson died. Family was my favorite show of all time. And Sada Thompson's portrayal of Kate played a big role in that. How I miss that show!
She was my favorite TV mother
One of the best TV shows ever. Great cast ensemble. Sada Thompson rubs shoulders with Esther Rolle from Good Times same level of intensity in their acting.
...You are so right. They were the best of the best at that time!
I absolutely agree on all counts. Meredith was at her most beautiful in this, and had many more opportunities for showing her acting skills than in Family Ties. The show was meant to focus on Meredith and Michael Gross, but once Michael J. Fox became the breakout star, it was game over for Meredith's character.
She's still been very gracious in interviews about that. She has class.
What a great scene! I am so sad that the great Sada Thompson has now left us. She was so talented. Thank you for posting.
This is one of the shows I grew up on!!!! I will always treasure it and glad that it's a timeless classic that the modern 🌎 world will never be able beat!!!! The council and the teachings of life that still apply today.😊
Sada Thompson reminds me so much of Charita Bauer (Bert Bauer) from Guiding Light
Some of the finest acting I've seen in a while. She made me well-up!
I really need to go back and watch this whole series again. I think that I was too young to when it originally aired to recognize the beautiful nuances of Sada Thompson's performances. Man, she is really good!
Same. I'm rewatching it right now. It's streaming for free on Tubi (with commercials, but they are short). I loved her, but I at that age many things went over my head. I was nine when the show started.
@@nspector i felt delighted to learn that kunt died in agony from lung cancer 😃
In my view, Sada Thompson was always one of the underrated and underappreciated actresses in Hollywood. Pity she didn't appear in more. Rest in peace Sada. You always gave me a feeling of "home" for lack of a better word.
Same here.
I loved the tv show! Wish they were all out on dvd
favorite tv mom of all time
dear, dear sada...what a TALENT! i was just a little girl when i first saw you on family, but i knew you were something special. while my friends tuned in to see kristy and leif, i was more interested in the dynamic relationship between you and james broderick. great chemistry!! oh how i miss quality television!
2harts4ever
What an intelligent child you must have been. I am also a tremendous fan of Hart to Hart! My favourite program growing up.
I miss shows like this. I remember my brother-in-law once commented on Sada's voice production. He watched the show just to listen to her speak.
Some of the comments on the various clips of this show say how this was really Kristy's show or Meredith's show. I disagree. This was an ensemble cast that neeed each and every character to make it work. They each brought something special to the mix.
As far as a favorite on the show; mine by far is Sada Thompson. Her facial expressions and her ability to tear up get me every time I watch her. She gets that look and I'm just crying my eyes out.
Loved this show.
Sada Thompson was class and dignity personified. The epitome of a skilled and talented actress still honing her craft. They don't make 'em like her anymore. Even the few talents still around have degrading and low brow scripts to make sense of.
I feel so close to this show, that I almost feel as if I’m right there. I love this show, it’s very dear to me!
Sada Thompson was a brilliant actress. In this scene, she shows just how brilliant. She plays the scene perfectly and pulls up a mediocre actress to her level instead of just being great in a mediocre scene. Baxter was good but when Thompson turns it on, Baxter rises a level or two to meet her.
Sada Thompson was theatrical royalty. I miss seeing that kind of talent.
Back when American had family values.
Bonnie parker Clyde Barrow Family Values = Rightwing Myth
mytie67 that is because you don't really look for it and don't really want to find it either

Oh B.$.!
A very talented actress. she seems like a beautiful human being - I am glad she was cast in this family drama
wow yeah i loved this show and i loved the mother ... great scene to watch again
Poor Sada. She was excellent in 'Family' and TV Guide never acknowledged her death in their magazine!!!
I didn't know Sada had passed away. Heard nothing about it. Just shows how media has gone to the dogs.
Meredith, or Nancy, looks a lot like my second grade teacher.
This was such of a wonderful show. Watched it every week.
Wow! I miss this show and the fantastic acting by everyone on the show. RIP Ms. Thompson.
This show and Eight Is Enough were my favorites when i was a kid. Yes, TV was actually good at one time. :)
Well, I think there is some great television now. But maybe what you mean is that this kind of earnest but nuanced drama is missing, which I agree with. Seems there is a competition now for who is "edgiest." Very little work like this -- such high level but also about a "boring" middle class family.
I was so excited to find this. I planned my calendar around this show in the 70's. Always was a MBB fan after this. Had to love Willie, and of course Buddy. So good to take a walk down memory lane with this wonderful show again. Wish there were more like this today. Thanks so much for this video!!
Loved this show
Truly a classic series! Loved the "Lawrence" family, one & all.
wow thanks for this.... oh the 70's... i wish they would release all seasons!
Ms. Thompson was one hell of an actress.
@bluemahajer oh NO, you're right! Sada Thompson has died at 83. (May 4, 2011). Rest in peace Sada! We won't forget you.
Sada was so great to watch as a mother. If only they were all like her, but in reality most mothers were not that perfect. She was the mother many of us never had but would like to have had. wise, calm. Oh the joys of television!
What a great series. Outstanding cast, excellent writing and great storylines. Meredith Baxter Birney was a hottie on that show and she was far better on that show than she was on Family Ties.
every season is on tubi-wonderfully written and acted show- heads up all Eight is Enough is on there as well!
The writers were spectacular! Sada's portrayal was so deep in this scene. To love a child so much that you could be this firm, this strong all the years of their youth to help them as an adult. Kate's comment about not letting Nancy melt her down to butter her biscuits was both well written and delivered. Nancy knows now how profound Kate's love for her has always been. C'est manifique ❤
Perfectly written scene.
Excellent actors.
Greatest t.v. mom ever!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I Watched this show faithfully as a kid. Seemed silly then ,-family sticking out the worlds problems together-but it'll stack up to any of the GARBAGE they put on TV now !
Always wanted Mom like her when I watched as a kid.
rest in peace Sada
@dimiracles7 It's my pleasure to post these! Glad you enjoy. This was my favourite show and i WISH they'd release more seasons on DVD!
I don’t ever recall having a mother daughter talk with my mom. It was always snap out of it and go find something to do. So I married the boy next door. Still together .😊😊
You were so lucky to know this wonderful actress! This is my favorite show from the 1970s and Sada Thompson is my favorite actress.
Superb acting on both counts.
Came back to this scene again...my God, the magic of this show, the actors, everything about it.
That was a powerful scene. I loved how Sada nearly broke the fourth wall at the end until she got back into character.
@rodzilla11b Your aunt was a wonderful actress and I LURVED her as Kate Lawrence. You and yor family have my condolences. Sony should honor her and James Broderick by releasing season 3-5 on DVD.
I LOVE this show. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. I wish they'd release seasons 3 and 4. I don't have a brother but, if I did I wish he'd be like Willy.
Sada almost broke the fourth wall by looking into the camera. I used to LOVE this show.
Classy american family talk , natural faces no botox no fillers
Such great writing and acting. ❤
This is what I would like to see a soap opera look like: two characters talking
God love Sada Thompson!
Thank you so much for posting. I was like 9 when this was on tv and I remember my parents FORBADE me to watch this show. I would try to sneak and watch it...get int trouble every time. LOL.
Loved these two.
Great clip.
Brings back memories.
Que recuerdos de mi infancia, gracias por colocar este vídeo, desde Venezuela.
sada thompson...the best of the best!!!!
@rodzilla11b You were a lucky person! Sada reminded me so much of my own mom when I watched the series way back. I was saddened to hear of her passing today. I can't say I ever met her but she just seemed so sweet and caring.
It's funny because in Meredith Baxter's autobiography she wrote that she didn't think Sada Thompson liked her and that she felt Sada thought she was flighty and then to hear Nancy say it in this clip that she felt her mother thought she was the flighty girl was surprising.
Maybe I should read that book, too.
Such a great show, and ahead of it's time. I really wish they'd put the whole series on DVD...
I wonder why things are shunned when they are ahead of their time
In what way was it "ahead of it's time?"
Great show.
l guess I'm in the minority but me and my sister would laugh till we cried at this TV show it's part soap opera, and part Mama's family watered down, I watch reruns on the decades channel, and I still think it's hilarious without it trying to be,God Bless Sada Thompson she was a natural treasure,no matter what the crisis she always had that same confused dumb half angry look on her face and I loved her for that.
Hey! We had that exact same Corning coffee pot! I had forgotten about it...
From what I understand on Family Ties they aged her a bit because many housewives were complaining that Meredtih looked too young and still look like the daughter on Family to play the mom of teenagers. To me Family Ties did make Meredith look older because the show came on not too many years after Family went off.
Meredith Baxter Birney is not a sitcom actress. She is more of a dramatic actress and we saw that on Family.
@rodzilla11b ...By all means do let her know how much we love her the next time you talk to her. I so WISH they'd do a Family reunion show, even though James Broderick is no longer with us. But the rest still are and it would be amazing to see them again.
just excellent
@redwerr My pleasure. I really must upload some more soon! I so wish Sony would release more seasons!
@rodzilla11b One of the best actresses of all time!!!
my mom would have slapped me and said "snap out of it"
It would be a great idea if the remainder of the seasons of “Family” on DVD!!!
"Flighty" girl? There's a better word to use than flighty.
@adelgado75 That's what they USED to be like and not that much long ago either. I miss the good old days when soaps were WELL WRITTEN and just as good if not better than primetime.
I really, truly wish that the rest of the seasons would come out.Does anyone know how to get more of this GREAT TV SHOW? I remember this show when I was kid and I didn't realize how great the writing really was. Me and my daughter have watched seasons 1&2 my daughter has taken a shining to this show it really gives us great bonding time. I LONG FOR THOSE DAYS BACK WHEN THINGS WHERE ALLOT LESS EXPENSIVE AND ALLOT MORE FUN!! WE HAD VALUES RESPECT FOR PEOPLE. NOW WE LIVE FOR GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!
@redwerr No it's straight from the SD DVD. I did upload it in the highest possible res though. :-)
Love this show now and loved it then. Oddity: the writers seem to have gone out of their way to mention “peanut butter” in this episode. It’s stuck into the script three times. Its like some inside joke! lol!
@ligreekguy I remember she was also in the TV Movie Queen (which follows Alex's Haley's roots on his mother's side of the family).
Roots was about his mother's family. Queen was about his father's family.
@@lmdmn1645 Hey thanks. Since I posted this, I found that out.
Man, the quality of this transfer is amazing! Can you post complete episodes? And why do you call your channel such a negative name if you like this show?
Kate and Doug sometimes treat Nancy like a child and that's because in many ways, she behaves like one.
The name of this channel.....😆😆😆
Clearly a sarcastic title because this show is an amazing classic.
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYONE IN FILMS TO EVER REMOTELY COME CLOSE TO THE GENIUS OF SADA THOMPSON>>>NOT MERYL STREEP..but then again,BARBARA STANWYCK HAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE EXCEPTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@lemurianchick ...Oh it's just a light-hearted name for the channel. I do like this stuff obviously. But some of the stuff I post would definitely fall under the heading of "Guilty Pleasures".
Can't post complete episodes of Family, or UA-cam will delete my account, but I will certainly post more clips!
:-)
