Eleanor also made Anna formally debut into high society as a debutante, which Anna hadn't wanted to do. However, Eleanor's hands weren't entirely clean, either. For her part, she had facilitated an affair between Anna and John Boettiger, while Anna was still married to Curtis Dall.
According to Ken Burns, Eleanor had a pistol because she insisted on driving the back roads of the US to report back to Franklin. Her security insisted that she carry the pistol.

FDR and Eleanor certainly weren't the best parents and didn't set a good example but FDRs mother is also to blame. She meddled in her grandkids upbringing especially when it came to discipline. She would tell them "I'm your real mother, Eleanor only gave birth to you". Teenage FDR Jr wrecked his car but FDR refused to buy him a new one because Jr was speeding when he wrecked it. Sara butts in and buys him a new one. Jr and John got in trouble at school so FDR and Eleanor takes their pony away as punishment. Sara goes and gets them each a new pony. When Anna and her first husband Curtis Dall got married Sara bought over FDR and Eleanor objections a luxury apartment in Manhattan. It was Sara's way of entrapping the newlyweds so she'd still have control over them as they could not afford the upkeep of the apartment unless Sara helped them out. In James's memoirs he actually got fed up with Sara's control and put his foot down. She wanted him to attend a house party she was hosting but he and his wife had plans the same night. When ahe threatened to cut him off financially he said, "Fine then".
When Franklin first moved away for college, Sara took an apartment near him so she could run his life. In essence, Franklin never truly left the nest. By the time Eleanor came into the picture, her parents had both been long dead, so she had no one to turn to when navigating marital issues. As a result, she relied heavily on Sara, which I'm sure she found to be a costly mistake in several ways.
Anne Roosevelt now lives in Maine and supports lots of good civic efforts and higher education, and she helps small businesses use environmental friendly technologies. Quite a fine person.

Sir Lynden Pindling was the premier of the Colony of the Bahama Islands from 1967 to 1969 and as Prime Minister of the Bahamas from 1969 to 1992. He was never the "governor" of the Bahamas. In the Westminster system as it applies to the dominions or colonies of Britain there is a Governor-General for Dominions, a Governor for colonies or a Lieutenant-Governor for subordinate colonies. Lynden Pindling as premier and later Prime Minister was the head of the government of the Bahamas was nominally the subordinate of the Governor and later Governor-General of the Bahamas, but in fact as the system works, he was the "head honcho" as all of the Prime Ministers of Dominions of the British Commonwealth are. Possibly the most famous Governor of the Bahamas was the Nazi sympathizing traitor uncle of the current King who was sent there to get him out of the way and to keep his betrayal out of public view. You no nothing about politics Stalin was hung by hi boots
Why name another son fdr jr? Seems disrespectful to the first jr child
I'm old and wise enough to know we should value leaders for their public achievements and not for their private lives. Yet here's how poor American education is. I worked in a social services office and not one of my young adult co-workers knew whose image was on the USA dime, let alone why FDR was associated with dimes at all! Anyway, thanks for the video, even if you made several mistakes in it.
Enjoyable history.
Eleanor Roosevelt actually learned of Lucy Rutherford 's presence at Warm Springs He where President Roosevelt died. Anna had helped arranged for her Dad to meet with Lucy Rutherford in his later years. When Eleanor returned to the White House after accompanying the President's body back. Anna had never seen her mother that angry.
It was President Roosevelt's cousin who gleefully told Eleanor of Lucy Rutherford's presence.
Well done ! Immediately subscribed. Unique photos. I did screenshots so as to study, totally unique.
Funny…What’s My Line ? was the Colbert or Tonight Show of the day….a must-do appearance for anybody who was anybody.
Forwarding this to others using the Share Arrow above, lots of interest here. Good job!
The oldest daughter seemed like a vindictive nightmare towards her mother.
I agree. Anna betrayed her mother in the worst way but I put the blame on FDR for putting her in a no win situation. Do I disappoint my father or betray my mother. He had plenty of aids he could have gone to to set up meetings between himself and his former mistress. That is not to excuse what Anna did however. I give Eleanor high marks for eventually forgiving her daughters unforgivable betrayal.
It's not her job to be her parents mediator and she shouldn't have been put in that position. Villifying the daughter for her fathers indescretions is ridiculous.
@@robynandrews4384 She was an adult woman who chose the job of her fathers secretary and willingly put herself in the middle so how was it not her job when she chose the job?? She was already married with children herself she wasn’t a 10-year-old she chose to do this to her mother which makes her vindictive.
@@chetyoubetya856510 or a 100, you don’t put your children in that position.
@@chetyoubetya8565Anna had been spiteful towards her mother for years after Eleanor enrolled Anna into Miss Chapin's School in New York, which Anna hadn't wanted to attend. Eleanor also made Anna formally debut into high society as a debutante, which Anna hadn't wanted to do. However, Eleanor's hands weren't entirely clean, either. For her part, she had facilitated an affair between Anna and John Boettiger, while Anna was still married to Curtis Dall.
Alice was Theodore Roosevelts daughter and not fdr
Right, Alice was two years younger than FDR lol. She was the first cousin of Eleanor.
I'm glad someone knows the facts. Ty ❤blessings.
@@GailBrenner-vt9ou My pleasure and likewise!
FDR also had a daughter named Alice.
@@historyprofessor1985 Yes, but FDR first child was also named Alice.
Eleanor carried a pistol later in life . I saw her permit at the NY Hyde Park Museum.
You try to get a permit in NY State today ……
Well she obviously was in a better position to be getting a permit, given her status!
Yes civil rights are based on Your status .
I have been trying to get a permit to vote but no luck yet ….
According to Ken Burns, Eleanor had a pistol because she insisted on driving the back roads of the US to report back to Franklin. Her security insisted that she carry the pistol.
My wife insists I carry a pistol for my protection but still no luck .
Well with money I am saving on not getting the expensive permit I will be able to pay my Poll tax to vote !
You know restricting civil rights or you might say Infringing is not good .
Elliot wrote mystery stories with his mother as the detective.
FDR JR had stunning eyes and smile
I am an American, I couldn’t agree more!!!!
I AM FRENCH AND F D R IS MY AMERICAN PRESIDENT WHO I PREFER WITH ULYSSE GRANT. THANK YOU MR
YOU didn't mention how many children each one of them had!
Anna had three children.
James had seven children.
Elliott had five, as did Franklin Junior. John had four children.
Where are the grandchildren?
Anne Roosevelt now lives in Maine and supports lots of good civic efforts and higher education, and she helps small businesses use environmental friendly technologies. Quite a fine person.
Eleanor Seagraves, 96, the oldest grandchild, is a retired librarian, teacher, and historian living in the DMV region. Her brother Curtis died at 86, in 2016, while living in France. John Boettiger, 84 of California, is a retired professor.
Sara Roosevelt Whitney Wilford, 89, a professor and administrator at Sarah Lawrence College, died in 2021. Her sister, Kate Roosevelt Whitney Haddad, 87, survives.
Chandler Lindsley, 84, a veterinarian, died in 2018. Her brother Bill Roosevelt, 72, died earlier. Her brothers Elliott, 87, and David, 78, survive.
Joan Roosevelt Schoonmaker, 45, died in 1997. Sara Roosevelt died in 1960. Nina Roosevelt Gibson, 81, an author and retired psychologist, lives in Vail, Arizona.
Christopher du Pont Roosevelt and FDR III, 85, an economist, survive.
There are others. There are just the ones I think of most immediately. All of Theodore Roosevelt's grandchildren are deceased, with the last surviving dying about 14 years ago. However, a number of TR's great-grandchildren survive and are distinguished professionally.
Wow...thanks for the update. I got to see some of them at a Roosevelt family reunion at Warm Springs, GA a decade ago. The Eleanor & Frankin family resemblances were strong.
And black people still had it hard!!😳
Everyone chooses to “forget” that Eleanor had a long term female lover
One could hardly blame her.
@@SafetySpooon she got really pissed, when she discovered FDR died “on the job” at his girlfriends place. His girlfriend had been Eleanor’s private Secretary for some years, there was speculation that both Elinor and FDR were screwing her, Elinor found out, sacked her, made continuation of the marriage conditional on him not seeing the girlfriend. The girlfriend married, had kids, became a widow, then reconnected with FDR!
They were very close sure, but I don’t know of any hard evidence they were lovers.
@@anthonyburke5656Missy LeHand was at Franklin's Warm Springs, Georgia residence when he died, not the other way around. Franklin was dealing with the social secretary hired by Eleanor, not Eleanor.

Jesus! FDR used to young!
Reagan was the best person to continue FDR's New Deal legacy?? Reagan?
Reagan saw the writing on the wall about what the Democrat party was becoming (tax and spend socialism) and switched. He said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party-they left me.” So, you’re right-Reagan was about as far removed from the Marxist New Deal as FDR was from his morals.
@@Musicchick60 Reagan and Trump cut from the same cloth. My, how history loves to rhyme.
He was kept under close watch by several British intelligence agencies as well as the American FBI to make sure he didn't get up to any mischief. I'm not exactly sure what Elliott Roosevelt's beef with Pindling was.
I love the clothes

So, Elliott is Hunter.
They all died.
Thanks for the spoiler aler😮
His children? What about Eleanor's much more diffict part in that?
I think that her life would have been quite different for Eleanor Roosevelt had her father lived longer. He was Elliot Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt's only brother who died from severe alcoholism when he was in his mid 30's. Had he lived Elliott Roosevelt would have been FDR'S father-in-law.
The narration is far too fast and frantic. Was there a train which had to be caught ?

Eleanor was FDR’s cousin, arranged marriage. There never was a marriage based on love. It was merely the appropriate marriage just like Charles and Diana.

Edward, Duke of Windsor, was governor of Bahamas in 1940. This was after his abdication and marriage to Wallace Simpson.
