  • if you've ever wondered if ESD (electro static discharge) was anything you should be worried about when it comes to building PCs, I made it my mission to ask as many Tech UA-camrs as I could what their thoughts on that was. And the results may surprise you!
Special thanks to ‪@LinusTechTips‬ and team for inviting us out to LTX! LTX 2023 was a long time coming and man was it worth the wait.

It's ironic you're speaking about this topic... We killed a number of little SBC computers (and corrupted some OSes) from ESD on Mr. Beast's set a few months ago. I have a video on that coming... sometime. Taking a long time to edit!
    Great meeting you at LTX!

Can't tell you how many PCs I have built in socks, on carpets, and no issues. It is real, but not the issue it was before and probably not something to worry about for most people. Great video!

I actually Had it happen working on a Lenovo all in one, I actually fried the IO on the board and was still functioning, but it still caused to where I had to replace the system board. It was the only one I ever had an ESD event... but still 100 of computers no issues ... servers on other hand ESD strap still.

I worked in a computer shop that had thick carpet for 18 years and in 18 years out of the hundreds of builds and probably thousands of systems I was elbow deep in the only component I ever killed with ESD was a used 10/100 nic that I used for troubleshooting.
We are in a very high humidity area so ESD was only a risk in the winter and when I grabbed the nic I touched the controller chip and it didn't survive. Luckily only a $20 replacement at the time.

Only thing I've ever killed was a really cheep mouse. I had a mouse for ~6 months and every time I would come back to my computer and touch the mouse, it would shock me through the wheel. After a few months of this it started getting glitchy.

Strap it up before you zap it up.
Wait, that sounds a lot naughtier than I intended. How about: 'Ground it before you pou'--- never mind.

Linus is right esd doesn't kill electronics right away, so it can be difficult to know for sure. Anyway I used my esp to find out if esd killed my electronics. LOL😅
