  • www.SouthwestCo... takes you back to another era, giving you an inside look at the care, design, and craftsmanship that goes into each and every Airstream product. This vintage documentary was filmed at the Airstream plant over 40 years ago; rare footage which is a must see video for anyone interested in Airstreams, Airstream's roots, or any Airstream enthusiast. These same construction ideas, techniques, attention to detail, and craftsmanship are still utilized today. This video shows what separates Airstream from the rest of the travel trailer pack; and the ingenuity that makes Airstream the American icon that it is today.

I was born in 1950 and lived the first six years in an Airstream. My dad bought it when he came back from the war and his family of 4 lived in it those six years as an Air Force family. We lived in El Rey trailer park near the Air Force base.

That road test at the end was awesome! They forgot to mention that the old guy driving the car had 15 rum and cokes before accidentally driving off-road at the test track just to make sure it was safe for the times!

I remember watching this video at Eddy's Trailer sales in New Your in the very early 1970's. The video was shot for the 1969 model year (the new body style) and the 1969 Chevy used to set the world speed record of over 100 miles an hour for a standart passenger car towing a travel trailer had a big block (396).
You can tell the trailers pictured are 1969/70 because the cabinet doors are not the tambor that started in 1971. They also have the spin-on water tank cap rather than the flap. Great!!!

Get one! They're on ebay. If you want to get one that is a bit of a fixer upper you can do some remarkable things (you wont save a LOT of money doing it that way but you save some and have ton of fun in the process)

What an awesome video! Cool to look back on this history, especially since we are in the middle of renovating an airstream right now! 🙌

Actually, I was wrong as the tambor started in 1970 and not 1971. Still a great video. Anybody got the second one where they document the speed record? I remember watching that one with the video showing the car speedometer reading about 115 mph but the timing lights actally confirmed a little over 100 mph for the record.

My idea of a tow vehicle for an Airstream would be a 1966 Chevy C20. :)

Scott Anderson you ever see that movie "A Perfect World" with Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood? There's an Airstream trailer being pulled by a 63 GMC pickup. real sharp set up. too bad it gets wrecked

Indeed. I'd seen that movie, although it's been a while since I'd seen it. So I cannot remember what was driven. All I remember is Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner.

Under *no* circumstances should anyone cut corners when building something. You never know when someone's life might be at stake, and you want to be able to make it from point A to point B safely.

I took the plant tour in Jackson Center Ohio, there is actually a great deal of the original quality still in place. I know the people there still have a lot of commitment to their product. Went to the Houston RV show this last week. The sales men were whining about not having enough product to sell. The guy said he had sold his allotment out to July, so they ain't exactly making them like sausages!

While I like something that is light in weight, the less power needed to tow the trailer, the better, strength is also important. How much weight can a completed fuselage of an Airstream trailer hold before it buckles? If it buckles under the weight of a fully clothed 235lb adult, then it's no good.

Understand that many Airstreams have electric brakes. They work great when set up and maintained properly.
