    thanks for your information. I have polished 4 Airstreams and gotten good results. My present one is a 1966 with pretty bad filiform corrosion in one or two areas. I tried black bars, wet sanding, etc, but was afraid of damaging them metal. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

      Hey buddy the ranger necessarily tarnish it unless you have residue or some leftover compound on the shell so as long as I when you get done you incorporate some ultra finishing techniques you should be just fine because rain doesn't have hardness to it unless its industrial rain or something OK good luck

    HI Sammy, Thanks for getting back to me, I must say what a hard job this is I take my "hat off" to you, why would anyone do this for a living ??? Now what I am getting is a rippling affect on my first cut, lots of vertical lines close together as if the wheel is not touching the whole surface of the metal, the only thing I am doing different from you is I am using a cheap grinder from Harbour Freight ? and I can't control it so well at 6000 RPM so I am doing it at 3000 RMP , or could it be as the wheel starts to wear down ? This is driving me nuts !!!!

    I have a 1962 vintage Kozee travel trailer all aluminum . It has never been polished. Your instruction is the best I have seen. It is 20ft. long. I am not going for the quality you have displayed. I wish only to work the metal so as to bring it back to life so to speak. As this is a very large area (6 weeks) Should I follow your first 3 steps? or would a brass fibre wheel give me decent results in say 1 pass?

    Sammy....THANK YOU for doing the vid! Question: near the beginning you commented about "fog" under the shine. Am I to assume that unless the metal is "compounded" properly and thoroughly then the polishing person may see fog deep under the shine. My 1955 Airstream Bubble has "shadows" when I bring out the final Cyclo shine with "S". The shadows depend on lighting....one moment it appears perfect, then, depending upon lighting and the angle you look, you may see these shadows. I'm near Tulsa should you be scheduling any trips to the area.(I'm fustrated!)....walt

    Hay Sammy,
    If you remove the clear coat and shine up the bare aluminum, how well does it weather and do you have to have it cleaned up more often. Thanks

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  7 років тому +2

      Larry hi and thank you for your comment well the clearcoat is originally engineered to protect the aluminums manufacture original finish overtime it degrades it's compromise it's blistered and flakes off so it stops protecting the aluminum also The elements still get under there and Karobi aluminum so I believe there is a fine line to where stripping it and polishing it is for beneficial than having to watch a corrode even if you have to do maintenance which I don't think it's that bad after the initial Polishing project I hope that helps thank you

    I just want to say to everyone out there before you start to polish your Airstream, when researching I came across several you tube sights I was going to order my polishes etc from Sammy but was convinced by my girlfriend to order them from Iowa 80 she lives in Iowa !!!! anyway all was fine and I started . To cut a long story short during the process I came across several problems I emailed Iowa80 several times and got no reply, the only person to get back to me with advice was Sammy even though he had not sold me anything he still took the time to help. So thanks Sammy and your team, if you are thinking of polishing your trailer bear this in mind. Ps This is a god awful job and I will get Sammy to finish it

    Hi Sam, thanks for the video!
    I am just about to start polishing our 72' airstream, previous owner has sanded away the club numbers on serval panels and has some horrible scratches. Someone has told me I might need to replace these panels because the alclad coating might have been compromised and won't polish. What is your view on this? Thanks

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  7 років тому

      Hey brother I know Filter just trying to help there's a lot of good information out there but if you have panels that have the clad aluminum and you have evidence that there scratch by sending all that tells me is you can polish it right back out now the clad is a super thin layer of more dense alloyed it's made so they won't oxidizeas fast and so they don't corrode but once you get to a compromise coding it's OK because now you have the repair ability which is to polish it shine it up and all that good stuff OK I hope this helps and call me if you have more questions 559-217-5791 thank you have a blessed day

    • @markcurd8899
      @markcurd8899 7 років тому

      Thanks Sam 🙏🏼 your advice is appreciated. So I don't get patches of some good panels still with alclad and some without should I take to sanding the whole trailer with say 320 to get a nice uniformed base for polishing? Will I then be able to achieve a good deep shine after this? Have a good day

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  7 років тому

      +Mark Curd I would say take your time with 320 grit and then use a high-speed buffer whatever you're comfortable with available speed yellow will enter probably compound or a high-speed 6000 RPM same will same compound been on a sidenote on the old trailers by the time I person thinks about polishing there previously i'll cladded aluminum trailer it's already gone it is so thin and there is nothing to tell you when you have crossed that thin layer of Al clad

    • @sammy3627

      McCall Schilling good question no I don't divide sections with blue tape but it is not a bad idea to First do it this way and validate your known process and procedures to make sure that you're able to get the finished product you want and duplicate that all across the board because I think it's a horrible tragedy to complete the Polish job and not be happy

      charging also depends on the skill levels
      we can do a airstream in about 2 to 5 days and charge from 165 to 225 per linear foot
      you might consider our training

      I appreciate any tips but I'm all the way in Florida though. so for a 20 ft in decent shape like total not square foot you're looking from 7 to 10 grand? Just trying to get a ballpark I know there's a large gap when you're talking thousands just was making sure I'm in the right range. I've done similar stuff worked at a polish and plating shop for 5 years so my skill levels pretty high and my pops has been polishing since he was a teenager. Again thanks for any feed back man is greatly appreciated. and also since I watched this video about a year ago just out of curiosity I noticed how you clean it in between the steps with paint thinner or mineral spirits and I started doing that on all aluminum I do and it does give it that higher grade of shine

    Sam, I've got a '57 airstream. I've gone over some areas with the yellow airways and brown rouge, but it's not getting out the deeper scratches. Is it wise to sand them out before cutting and buffing, or do I just live with the scratches?

    • @sammy3627

      Yes you can send the aluminum if the scratches don't come off with the heavy cut the idea is to sand the scratches so to remove 50 to 70% of the scratches and cut them all in such a way that you get maximum benefit I wouldn't use more than 220 grit I hope this helps

    • @judc2960
      @judc2960 8 років тому

      Thanks Sam! what grit should I get up to before going with the yellow airways and brown rouge?

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  8 років тому

      +Jud C preferably you could start with the 320 grit that will make things easier when you go to the yellow wheel and the tip only compound but sometimes in rare situation you might have to go with a rougher grit like 220 so do a small sample test with the different grits you suspect you might need to find out what works validate your process and go for it

      Sammy, do I want to keep my sanding vertical or horizontal or does it matter? or should I do it all with a DA sander?

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  8 років тому

      +Jud C yes I would definitely use a DA sander

    What speed are you running that at? Do you vary the speed as the wheel gets smaller?

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  8 років тому

      +Shelly Bower He and thanks for your comment. on of the things that happens to the machine as the wheel gets smaller is that is draws a little less amperage, the machines RPM's will remain the same but the actual speed of where the wheel and work area meet will change and the wheel will be a little slower. another thing to be concerned with is you don't want to use small wills because they become more dense and hard and it changes the out come of what your trying to do, for example if you are using a white 8" airway and blue moon compound to do some finish shine and your wheel becomes small and worn to 4 inches well now your wheel has become more harder due to the lack of wheel and space between your work area and your wheel, so use good wheel whenever possible, ok I hope this helps

    • @grample1
      @grample1 8 років тому

      +Sammy Bulgara the formula for surface feet per minute covered by the wheel is SFPM= 1/4 wheel diameter x rpm of the spindle.

    Hi Sammy or anyone out there... I have done my primary cut using Yellow wheel and brown bar but there are a few spots with a kind of "cloudy"affect ? Don't know what I have done to make this happen, can anyone tell me how do I get rid of the clouding and stop it happening as I proceed ????

    • @sammy3627
      @sammy3627  5 років тому

      Sometimes based on the condition of the metal or part of your process to create a cloudy surface usually that happens when you’ve used Tripoli or some greasy compound and then move onto a dryer finishing or semi finishing compound like green if you do this without acid washing after your primary cut it will show up cloudy so you might want to acid wash your surface and start again
      You can always call me direct at 559-217-5791 and we could elaborate a little bit more on these issues and some resolution OK thank you for reaching out

      Hello and thanks for your question average cost I want to say is about 150 per linear foot average time you know it really comes down to your manpower your develop process and your abilities we could do an airstream a full size airstream in about 2 days we've done small ones in one day complete cut semi finish cyclo and ceramic coat I think the average person takes probably about a good 1 to 2 weeks I hope that helps You're more than welcome to reach out to me for more questions thank you

    wow, you make it look so easy. I have got to slow down. But I have just got my start on 1963 airstream. Have a problem that I need advice on, I have an idea of what is wrong but need to run it by you. Yellow air wheel with Brown Tripoli. first part of the unit was going just like you show and looking good, then It went to leaving a black and gummy surface. I have wiped down with MS but with no good results. Could this be due to the temp in my shop or hummity in the air? Suggestions, please Stan from NC Please get back with me as soon as you can.

    Sam, I have a one step polish that we invented called Monsterpolish... I would be happy to send you videos, we also restore Airstream finishes and there is no need for using the Airway pads or tripoli using our polish, it cuts, colors and seals with one application. The Airstream aluminum is thin, and after polishing hundreds you might want to try a new and faster method?

      Sammy Bulgara do you use anything to protect the metal afterwards? I worked all day yesterday and then it rained over night and I had to go back over what I did yesterday because the water spots on the metal wouldn’t wipe off by hand. Even if I get this giant bastard done it’ll look bad as soon as it rains again

    Any one that polishes one of these campers needs their BRAINS EXAMINED , Once you remove the FACTORY CLEAR COAT you will have to spend 40+hours every year polishing it. If you don't the aluminium will CORRODE!
