Thanks for a very good segment about Airstream maintenance. I don't own an Airstream, but the RV we travel in also has needs that are very similar so it was a great reminder that we need to care for the vehicle that makes life comfortable on the road.

Thanks for sharing this fun topic. It's always fun to work with you guys :-). I saw a couple comments that I can respond to. Dawn detergent is commonly known to remove grease and tar from the exterior surface. There are other products but this is what I like to use. Only use this type of detergent if you plan on prepping a surface for wax otherwise it will remove your hard work. The exterior of your Airstream can be washed safely with an over the counter car wash soap, soft brush and micro fiber towels for drying. Regarding roof reseal... this needs to be inspected every year. Depending on how you store your Airstream or travel trailer your sealant may last longer. I store my Airstream inside and I expect to get 5 or more years of service from my reseal. You may live in the Arizona desert with direct sun exposure and may need to do this more frequently.

Vinnie talked about jacking up the trailer to change a tire on a tandem axle, I never use a jack, simply run the good tire up on leveling blocks and the flat tire is off the ground and easy to change.......that’s how I do it😁

It always amazes me how much New RV's cost & most aren't even built to be lived in 24/7. I watched a vid the other day on a 2015 Airstream. It was way over 100K.
Keep up the good work. Enjoy the vids.....:)

Strong work. Enjoyed that segment because I am a super proponent of maintenance. FYI there is a great company in the Denver area called The Metal Company and they can build all types of RV related tanks and metal boxes. They have their own forms for creating them. I got lucky and found them when I needed to replace a certain profile of siding material for a panel on my trailer. They can create almost any type of corrugated panel made of aluminum.

  • @daves1646

Sean and Kristy -- Thanks for this vid on the kind of maintenance that is too easy to shy away from. It's time (this coming spring) to have our trailer resealed. We've got a more typical eastern TT but it's about 5 out of the factory and living in the great north, our trailer 'survives' through 4 months of sub 35 and snow every winter and then we do that 4.5 on the richter scale thing for 3 or so trips a year. So we're due to get a full inspection and probably a reseal around the roof components and windows lest evil water finds its way in. AND, our tongue (here's looking at U Sean) needs the sanding and repainting along with areas of the frame underneath. Our trailer did the winter show circuit a few too many times before we met it twice and purchased it. Ive been doing salt damage repair every year since and it's time to and and rustoleum the frame and tongue so it corrode-no-mo.
    Thanks again!!

One of my buddies did what Vinnie did to his rig and MAN I CAN APPRECIATE the hard work that goes into that process. One thing he did to his unit was to use a product on his exterior called "shark Hyde" it's suppose to protect the aluminum a little better. Who know he did this process in the fall so results are still to be seen. Awesome video as usual thank you for keeping the content free and taking us with you!

Recently I received an ad for a new product for exterior finishing from metal and painted surfaces to fabric and plastics, and even leather. It is called Top Coat F11. It puts a slick finish that repels water and allows dirt and bugs, etc to be washed off or removed without rubbing and scrubbing. Plus, it makes the finish of painted or metal surface shine like diamonds. You should check it out. Kind of expensive but probably worth it. Have not tried it myself, but I am seriously considering its purchase.

I have dealt with inept repair personnel at RV shops. Some of them will tell me that i cannot get a part that I need because my rig is too old. A competitor will hand me product information with an 800 number and I get my part. The first shop refused to hire me even though I was way more knowledgeable than their current crew. I wound up doing all my own repairs and maintenance.

Nice video! Just a tip on maintaining the exterior finish.....Dawn soap is great prior to all of the work Vinnie did, but should not be used after all of that laborious polishing. It will strip off the wax or other protection (which you should be using on clear coated panels). I reccomend optimum no rinse for use on your travels as you need very little water and it won't take up much space. Look up "auto fetish detail " on UA-cam, he has great recommendations for this product and has a video regarding an airstream as well. Happy travels!

  • @richt.5105
    @richt.5105 8 років тому +1

Hiya Guys, Thanks for the extremely high standard of quality in your videos, as usual. It really doesn't go unnoticed the amount of effort that goes into the editing etc.. I must admit that I find it hard to believe that in 2016 all the roofs in all the r.v's are flat where there are any opening to allow for a.c. Units, vents/fans and the other stuff to be fitted. This can only encourage any water to come in should there be a very small crack/hole. I wonder why the industry don't have curved edges that point upwards by three inches. This would allow all the a.c. Units and any fittings fit over any holes cut in the roofs more efficiently, and in turn, reduce the risk of water damage from the roof area. It can be a little more tricky with aluminium but not impossible however, there's no excuse for the rest of the industry that has one piece moulted roofs! The manufacturers appear to put profit before customer satisfaction and product quality.

Okay, guys - last night I was walking through Nirvana (Home Depot) and a question popped into my mind about a topic, and I haven't found that you've covered it previously. Here it is: What do you do to handle severe weather while camping? Not so much tornado fodder, I mean, but that too, right? What types of precautions and measures do you take in the event that you get caught somewhere in the wild, and the weather turns really bad.
I'm still looking through your video library to see if you've covered this. So far, I've gotten back as far as the Gerald Ford administration-era episodes, but I'll keep looking. Calvin Coolidge, here I come!

While I am not an airstream person, this was very informative. I think many of the ideas are transferable to other RV's. In terms of your question on what we like in videos, the "how to's" like this one are great, but I also really like the location videos. Ideas of where to go in your RV, what you will find, what is best in a location are all great ways to build a bucket list of places to go in an RV; very helpful and interesting. I have been thinking about Halifax lately, have you ever been there? Thanks for all your great sharing!

Ok you should have showed a walk around of the Airstream showing the finished work as that would be interesting how it came out and re-freshed.

Did you ask Vinny if there is a reason not to paint the tongue and skirting with stone guard finishes like LineX or Rhino Liner? Well, for Vinney it probably about keeping the units looking factory fresh stock looking. Have you two thought of a stone guard finish (basically spray in bedliner surfacing) on at least the tongue and front skirting (below the rub rail where its already black). Some have done all of the skirting because the trailer tires kick up debris too.
To all those except Sean, Kristy, and experienced RV owners...If you can't afford to have your RV resealed every 4-6 years and all new tires every couple years (depending on how the rv is stored and miles driven-towed) you can't afford to have an RV. So tired of seeing cracked sidewalls and blow out due to dry rot. Dicor is the BEST sealer. Don't go cheap on sealer. Don't ever think a little pin hole, small crack in the seal, or a lifting seal is "ok to leave for now". Water damage is the quickest way to destroy your RV. Always wash your rv before checking seals. Dirt, tar, sap, bird crap, etc,.can hid small holes, cracks, and lifting seals. Lastly, use the proper cleaner to ensure all old sealer, oil, and contaminates are removed from the surface you're going to put Dicor on.
    Cheers.

it may cost more, but using marine grade plywood would be much better for subfloor. it doesn't rot as easy when wet.

THAT was a very interesting video, thank you! Everyone knows there is maintenance on any RV, but I actually took notes on the KIND of maintenance that an Airstream needs. We are in the market for a used Airstream this year (2016 ) so this video gave me ideas for more questions I'll be asking the seller. 1) How long ago was the roof resealed? 2) How long ago was the tongue re-painted? Thanks again you two adorable people!

+Rainey Shafer Great, thanks for your comment! Yes, that's exactly the sort of thing you need to keep in mind when shopping for an Airstream. Water is the enemy. Be certain to check the floor for any signs of water damage. BTW, you can read the first chapter of my "How to Buy an Airstream" book for free on Amazon. amzn.to/1mG55Nd Good luck!

Long Long Honeymoon - DAWN detergent is THE BEST!! I use it for laundry pre-soak and general kitchen duty. I remember years ago a tanker truck carrying liquid fat over turned on a major highway, I think in Ohio, and made a huge mess. A truck carrying Dawn came to clean it up. It works to clean the oil off of wildlife caught in oil spills too.
Vinnie seems to be the best as well too, he obviously loves what he does and loves doing it. In 2004 husband and I flew Chicago to Key West and to safe a few bucks booked on United. The trip was a nightmare both going and returning because of some issue with each plane and every single United employee we encountered acted as if they were put out to show up for work! We did our first long distance Amtrak trip last December, Chicago to LA and back on the Texas Eagle. Every Amtrak employee we encountered were like Vinnie, they loved their jobs and it showed!! We've NEVER used United again.

Always enjoy your videos! keep up the good work! I have gotten a few good tips from these videos, such as when pulling into a camp site, use the "Scoop" method to make it easier to back into the site. It may seem to be such a small thing, but it really does help.

Sean and Kristy, it doesn’t look like you use mud flaps on Seemore. Am curious why not. I’d be interested in a review of options for mud flaps or other rock guard options for a Tow Vehicle. Would others on this forum have some experience they’d be willing to share?
