My wife begged me to buy an Airstream. I hated the storage on them and hated the price. That was 3 years ago, Oh my god, I have fallen in love. I changed my mind when I had to do a sudden evasive turn and then zig zag down a steep hill. The freaking Airstream hunkered down like a Porche and we escaped with our lives. I love my Airstream.

When building a travel trailer, as with building cars, under no circumstances should one ever cut corners. Understandably, you want to save money when you buy something, but not at the expense of quality, reliability, roadibility, and safety.

The designs are proven. But any good design can be negated by poor materials. The problem I have with 'streams are the materials. Aluminium was good for 1950, but it dents extremely easily. The shell should be updated to composites. The shell should be inner-coated with ceramic paint to provide R500 insulation. Same for frame, axels, suspension, brakes. Independent suspension with air has huge benefits. Disc brakes are far superior to drums. I could go on for all components. Airstream is simply too old tech for the price.

@sportster1988 wow, what a rude thing to say, what difference would it make if he has a trailer, he's giving his opinion and explaining that this is a vintage movie and that there are newer better technologies. 'Remember the rule of social networks, only say things you would say to someone's face.

      Rob Grune,
Aluminum is old school but it is not a "poor material". There are some travel trailers on the market that are well built and use modern state of the art components and take full advantage of modern day engineering. Airstream fits a market of people who enjoy a modern take on vintage products. Just look no further than Harley Davidson.
