This is the start of a slippery slope to financial ruin, model-building happiness, and lots of very cool mecha!
How Steep is that slope looking now?
Vertical. But it's lined with tiny Gundam, so I can live with it.
Glad you found the hobby. If you stick with it, wait until you build the Real Grades or Master/Perfect Grades, then you'll know what the real plastic crack is.
Never made any models but wanted to build Armored Core 6 models but they dont exist so I got into gunpla a couple months ago and already have several built and dozens waiting to be built, really is an addiction
@@montgomeryfitzpatrick473 Kotobukiya did already announce that they will be making AC6 kits. In the meantime, there are reprints being done for kits of the older AC games
Not sure if you noticed, but the white block on that machine gun is actually its magazine, and there are two identical parts on the hip plates of the Gundam - it's where it stores reloads, and this can be seen in the anime.
One thing that Bandai does which is similar to a lot of toy manufacturers is that they have a lot of kits that use shared parts - so that Blue Destiny kit shares most of its sprues with the GM Ground Type, Gundam Ground type and EZ-8 that came out between 2017 and 2020. Those kits are uniformly excellent - I got my GM to balance on one foot on a coke bottle!
That makes it even cooler! These things are so well thought out! I figured there was a reason for the unused parts on the sprues, so that makes a lot of sense. Cheers Lorcan!
My Dad's into WarHammer and I'm into Gundam. He just sent me this link, and I'm happy about it.
That’s so cool, thanks for watching my videos!
The Tau kits give off solid Gundam energy if you want to meet at a halfway point. And some of the bigger suits look like they can do a proper Maccross missile massacre
@@narkhall2 Tau is what my dad primarily plays. It is nice.
@@UTAUloidUsaKokoro i'll throw out #Battletech as a possible mid point. really tiny "Giant robots!" with a solid tabletop game behind them.
if you purchase a Gundam kit in the RG line, you will be blown away again, but the fully articulated limbs, that come starlight off the the sprew. Yes you heard me right, like a full articulated hand with articulated fingers for example, somehow injection molded like that straight on the sprew. Mind blowing
I really don’t know how they do it, I’m completely in awe!
After building models for 30+ years and amassing enormous army’s for the emperor, I myself just bought my first Gundam last weekend. So I was ecstatic to see you do the same. I agree, totally blown away by these kits and I’ve already ordered 4 more of them
That's so cool! Yeah, I'll also be ordering another 4 or 5 to try to get a feel for the different grades and series.
@@GrayPrimer That’s great to hear! I’m glad there’s another (40 years late to the party) person to delve into my newly discovered Gunpla adventure
What kit did you pick up?
@@narkhall2 I picked up the 1/144 Barbatos. I found it at Target of all places. I ended up ordering 4 more of the same scale, along with some decals and a few of those little stands. In the meantime, I’ve been watching random Gundam things on UA-cam to try and figure out what all this is actually about lol
@@BagelByte_ Which Bart. I've enjoyed all bar the Rex Variant. Plus Iron blooded Orphans is a cracking series. Have you watched any of the series?
Saw someone elses vid recently where the discussion of GW vs Bandai was brought up, because let's face it, GW is decades behind them in model tech, development and production.
It's an asymmetrical comparison, but there are things Bandai does, that GW should've picked up on, such as having numbered sprues from left to right, top to bottom, being able to equip and unequip alternative loadouts on large models such as tanks and knights and having some degree of articulation on some things that you can then pin and glue into position.
But no, what we have are mold lines and barely any undergating. Meanwhile Bandai tries something new every year or even more often. Their HG's get new gimmicks and even their Entry Grade kits are PHENOMENAL, utilizing sculpted shadow to give a false impression of darker tones on the details, with parts that you can pop off the sprues with your fingers.
Meanwhile we've LOST customizability from GW models and can't interchange parts. It's nuts.
Not to even mention the prices. I can get 3 RG Hi Nu Gundams for the price of one Imperial Knight and still have enough cash left over for McDonald's on the way home, and the RG Hi Nu is my favorite kit in my collection!
All the excitement and you haven't even dropped into the world of MG and PG kits yet :)
I think RG are gona blow his socks off
I'm gonna leave in yours, Mark's and Lorcan's hands to pick my first RG and PG.
Ver Ka beauties
The RG Unicorn is a solid kit , whichever version you pick is up to you. And the God Gundam (or Shining Gundam for the anime dub boys) is an articulate beast by itself
Plamo (and Gunpla in particular) is an incredibly fun sub-hobby to wargaming. You get so much plastic and so much quality for so much less money than minis. While there's no game and therefore no mechanical value to any kit, I find Bandai's pricing is way fairer for what you get than GW's prices for much less plastic. Moreover, I always love seeing mini builders carrying their skills over to plamo. You guys bring a load of variety and new blood to the hobby that we're always eager to see.
Thanks for watching the video, and sharing your thoughts. I think my next step on my plamo journey needs to be waterslide decals and panel lining.
@@GrayPrimer You're very welcome. Waterslide decals and panel lining are both logical steps. For someone with mini-building experience, they should be no problem. There are also some fantastic aftermarket detail-up decal manufacturers, specifically HiQParts and Delpi Decal. Delpi is especially nice, offering holographic or pearloid versions of some decals and specialized kit-specific decal sets meant to fit perfectly with specific models.
why do most of you guys call this a sub hobby ? Gunpla is as big as a main hobby just in different genre
@@dsleong8328 I specifically meant it as a side project within people who mostly do wargaming. I don't actually build minis myself and basically exclusively do plamo.
Ash Barker wrote the game Gamma Wolves exactly for the sole purpose of using your favorite model robots for tabletop gaming. If you're interested in playing a fun skirmish game with your models I'd recommend checking it out.
always fun as a builder to watch someone try out Gunpla AFTER other model kits. It's like you get launched 50 years into the plastic manufacturing future haha
Solid pick for a first build! Most pick something old and lackluster :/ Hope to see more in the future :-)
Thanks so much for watching! I did a few more Japanese kits in this playlist, but I’m still in shock at just how advanced the Gundam kits are!
ua-cam.com/play/PLaVULmUSMsDR29nZo3eBnWneo_-hNYhEX.html
It is kinda weird building Bandai kits. I like it to traditional model building meets posable action figure. The casting technology with multiple colours and fine details kicks the snot out of anything GW I have bought.
I'd love to see GW embrace some of this tech. Imagine ETB kits with multiple colours on the sprues that give you a battlefield-ready army without the need to reach for the paint brush!
@@GrayPrimer I believe Bandai have a patent on the multi-gate technology that allows for multiple colours on one sprue.
Ah that's a shame!
A few years late to this but glad you didn’t make the same mistake as me and have your first kit be an early real grade. Granted I didn’t have the prior experience of Warhammer or any other models then either but hgs are definitely the best for beginners outside of an entry grade
And if you're not a fan. There's always the option to ORK that mecha up.
Can you imagine how awesome that would be?!
I have a HG Strike kits and one thing I like is that equipment striker packs are uniformaly eccepted from the NG Strikes to the Strike Revive kit.
I love seeing people build Gunpla kits for the first time. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
I do so enjoy watching people discover the joy of gunpla. Also, if Gundam is plastic crack, then Games Workshop is grade A rockstar heroin! That stuff is crazy expensive
Thanks for checking out the video. I’m amazed by how many good value kits there are in Gundam, I thought it would be much more expensive!
Quick tidbit. This is Blue Destiny Unit 3 (shortening to BDU3) and it had two sibling units. All BDUs had one specific system of importance, the EXAM system. BDU1 would be destroyed in combat. BDU2 would be stolen by an enemy faction. BDU3, unlike its two siblings, is not blue because they didn't paint it in time. It was immediately deployed to chase down BDU2. 2&3 would score mutual kills against each other. The BDU1/3 pilot would survive and pilot more Mobile Suits through the series.
The BD project was an attempt by the Earth Federation faction to give their pilots powers on par with Newtypes (psychic empaths with fast reflexes) by the EXAM system, but the BDUs were made using the chained soul of a Newtype girl. The entire BD incident was the girl attempting to guide BDU1/3's pilot on a quest to destroy the BD project (which created the EXAM system that gives these pilots powers) and free the girl's soul.
Lastly, the BDUs are disputed whether they are Gundams or not. A Gundam specifically refers to a prototype unit but eventually became a term assigned by Bandai to powerful prototype suits. All other non-Gundam units are designated as "Mobile Suits". This is a one direction thing. All Gundams are mobile suits, not all mobile suits are Gundams.
What a cool bit of lore, thanks for sharing it!
Watching this was fun. Bandai is the king of making model parts.
After building gunpla for the last 2 decades, this is exciting to watch. Welcome to the hobby! I hope you pick up a master grade, or a real grade next. You'll be absolutely blown away!
Bandai does amazing work across the board. You should try out some of their Star Wars character kits too. They are really well done.
What I'd really like to see you get your hands on though is a Master Grade Gunpla kit. If you think the articulation on the HG is amazing, you'll be blown away by a good Master Grade.
Ooh I'm going to check out the Star Wars kits for sure! Thanks for that!
I've been building Warhammer Mini's for about 20years now and been building Gundam for about 10. I enjoy both immensely, and i also dabble in Model Cars, Military vehicles, plains, ships, trucks, tanks, wooden sailing ships and of course terrain.
I feel like all of these offer different experiences and mastering each has expanded my skill set as a builder and painter. There is always more to learn, new techniques to master and cool stuff to put together.
Highly recommend exploring the whole world of models, if you are looking to really expand your skill set. Each path offers lessons that can be applied to the others.
Thanks for sharing this, I love how varied the hobby is. If you have a look at the rest of my videos, you’ll see a good bit of variety in there, and a lot of custom builds and dioramas!
Let me know if there are any other kits you’d like me to feature.
Your amazement is the same as me when i got my first RG, the Aile Strike Gundam
i was so confused on how they have parts with joints IN THE SPRUE that can MOVE
Definitely some kind of witchcraft!
That's a great HG to start with. Shame it's not as blue as unit 1&2
I still can’t get over the value for money!
@@GrayPrimer you should checkout the Kampfer. Comes with a small Arsenal of wepons. Real "Bang" for your buck
It's actually a pretty solid kit.
Loved the "Most colorful" line. #Gunpla are great.
Can't believe I didn't take the plunge earlier!
If you find having different colors on one sprue impressive, the F90 line had some individual pieces molded in three different colors at once by having certain pieces connect to all three colored sections on the sprue. The enthusiasm of this video is a joy to see!
No way, that's so impressive!
Thanks for watching the video too 😁
I always loved the modularity of Gundam models. For the most part, you can take the arms of one kit, the head of another and stick it on the torso of a third with little to no issue with everything fitting together. Customization is incredibly easy. I took the body of a RX-78-2 and put the arms of a AN-01, painted it and now have a Gundam version of Optimus Prime
That's so clever! I hadn't thought about the customisation side of Gundam at all. Thanks for this!
So, a couple of things:
1. Welcome to the hobby of "gunpla"! and great video
2. in this hobby they call them "runners," not sprues. (Just in case you talk to other gunpla enthusiasts or read comments from gunpla fans, it's good to know they use the word runner instead of sprue)
3. a big reason why I personally think gunpla's so successful is that you can model at ANY level - out of box, out of box with stickers and decals, build with panel lining, full paint job... my whole table is taken up by my current kit build right now and it's great. Im having so much fun that I probably wont get back to my fantasy army until after building/painting 4 or 5 more of these
4. Master Grade kits (MG) are my go-to kits to build. Most of the MG kits' hands are fully posable down to the fingers, and you get to build the gundam's inner frame to boot! They also tend to come with more decals too which I find fun, and the parts dont get lost in the carpet as easily if I drop them XD
Thanks so much for this great advice, and for checking out the video!
I've been eyeballing a few of the MG kits for a while, as they look glorious, and I'm especially drawn to the articulation you mention.
Not here to rag on you but to offer you an idea for what you could have started off with. The HG AC 1/144 Leo from MSG Wing. Its a great build for first timers and had and has no decals to bug the OCD of anyone. A nice, easy grunt to start things off. Or if you wish of something that looks a bit more Gundamish the the HG CE 1/144 Dagger L is a nice choice!
HG Leo is goated. Didn't get it until I was already experienced, and the build was so simple that I didn't even use the instructions, but the end result is such a solid and cool looking figure.
These are great suggestions, and are going on 'the list'! Many thanks!
Oh also I found out they have model kits of Godzilla and his monsters.
Nice!
Some real nice kits for the Gman out there. But you the price tags are nasty at times
You are like a kid in mud. You are having so much fun and it is awesome. Also, if you are interested, there is a fan made war game called mobile suit skirmish you can use your gunpla for.
That sounds amazing, thanks for letting me know!
so its been 2 years since this vid launched and im curious if you ever found out about the Gundam Tabletop Wargame Project, and if you ever discovered the magic of Bandai's 30 Minute Missions line of models. :3
I was only just talking to someone about the wargame project last week!
@@GrayPrimer awesome! ive been getting ito it myself. i also highly recommend bandais 30 minute missions line of model kits for customization of your units~
I’m the exact opposite, I’ve built a few gundam sand knew how amazing they are, but I recently picked up my first war hammer kit and was blown away by the details. I did an unboxing video on my channel and instantly became a warhammer fan.
Warhammer plastics have some of the best details I've ever seen in miniatures! Thanks for watching - I'll check out your channel too!
Ground Type?
Can I say you had a perfect start point of build Gunpla?
I enjoyed it for sure!
Nice change of pace
The start of an expensive journey into mecha-land!
Blue destiny unit 3, you got good taste in gundam mate
Cheers! Someone posted it to me so I can't take any credit!! lol
I say look into like panel lining.
Cheers! Yeah, some of the panel lining pens and inks look amazing.
@@GrayPrimer You can use a dry erase marker.
Very cool. I'm a UC Gundam fan, and Warhammer F. Interesting to see you get in to it. The lore is as good as WHF, imho. Also, wish you painted and sanded.
Nice! Thanks for watching. Yeah, I’d like to do something more with this, so I might look at doing a fully painted diorama with it.
I always love seeing new comers to gunpla
It was a brilliant experience!
If thisnis his.reaction to a relatively simple HG, id like to see how he feels about something more complex, like a RG or MG
Would love to see you build a Real Grade, and even a Master Grade
Check out this playlist, as I did end up making a RG Sky Moebius and a MG Alex:
ua-cam.com/play/PLaVULmUSMsDR29nZo3eBnWneo_-hNYhEX.html
Shame it's not a zeon kit. But loving your enthusiasm.
If I do a series of these videos in the future that might be something I can remedy!
@@GrayPrimer zakus baby. It's the only way to go
For this to be your first kit you def picked a great one
Yeah, it’s sitting on my shelf even now. So cool.
@@GrayPrimerif you liked that you should get one of the more modern ones like the hg wfm line
HG Aerial is an incredible kit with no poly caps.
@@RezaQin i know i loved the build
Seeing someone react to stuff like multi-colored runners, pretty standard part separation, and basically everything else that's standard for a HG is just really surreal. This is just the usual for a HG kit, though I'm not saying that this is a mediocre kit. And to see someone so in-awe at what is basically the usual for Gunpla
For people with a background in Airfix, Tamiya, Games Workshop, etc - this type of plastic kit is fantastic!
@@GrayPrimer Wait until you get your hands on the the new Gundam Aerial or Lfrith- Those are game changing HGs
Are you going to try your hand at a quick panel lining?
I got some of the MIG-branded panel liner liquids, so I might give it a go!
I like to do Zaku models, they're army builders, the mono eye makes them expressive
Nice! Thanks for watching the video 😀
HG is pretty beginner friendly, wait till you try MG, RG or PG gundam models, they're way more detailed and has much better articulation.
btw, the letters means EG = Entry Grade, HG = High Grade, MG = Master Grade, RG = Real Grade, PG = Perfect Grade
and they basically ascend in quality like this EG < HG < MG = RG < PG, with PG being the most detailed but also the biggest scale.
EG, HG, and RG comes in 1/144 scale, MG in 1/100 scale while PG is in 1/60 scale.
Ah great stuff, thanks for the explanation. I saw a PG in Forbidden Planet and the box was HUGE. They're definitely on my bucket list!
A few months late to this one, but there's also MGEX which has metal coated parts and some of the perfect grades have led kits in them...
Its good to see people branching out into new hobbies. I myself love gundam and have been really wanting to get into warhammer, but it seems to be a bit too expensive for my liking. Any tips?
There are lots of entry points to Warhammer, from small skirmish games like Blood Bowl and Kill Team, to large-army war games like Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar. It really depends on what grabs you from the lore, miniatures, or rule systems.
You can check out www.warhammer-community.com/downloads/ for some free rules, or have a look on UA-cam for how-to-play videos for each of the games.
If you are drawn to the larger scale games like 40K or Sigmar, which will of course be more expensive, you can save a lot of money by investing in the large launch boxes that are released from time to time. Right now, Skaventide is on the shelves for Age of Sigmar. Still a lot of money, but a massive saving over buying individual kits.
@@GrayPrimer I was definitely trying for 40k lol but I thank you for the helpful information, I'll be sure to do some more research!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Gunpla. =)
The pronunciation of gundam is really throwing me off, but I'm still glad to see your excitement and enjoyment with your first gundam kit. This is the only video of yours I've seen so I hope you've had more good experiences with gundam kits, and maybe checked out the Real Grade line, or the Perfect Grade line
I’m yet to try a Perfect Grade, but I did have the pleasure of building an RG, as you’ll see in this playlist. Thanks for checking out the video!
ua-cam.com/play/PLaVULmUSMsDR29nZo3eBnWneo_-hNYhEX.html
Most people o know say gundam like gun dum never heard anyone say it gun-dam like it’s spelled
I’ve been thinking about getting in Gunpla. Last year when I was getting my airbrush I found this lady talking about airbrush. She said she built model kits of horses.
I used to build dinosaur kits when I was a kid but I never built a horse!
There is a gundam that is piloted by a horse.
For a second I thought you were kidding, then a Google search showed me Fuunsaiki. Gundam Rocks!
Gundam is serious business. Never kid
Probably late to the conversation, but definitely try the larger kits, and I also mean in the same scale as 144. The Psycho Gundam stands at twice the average height of your average kit and TRANSFORMS! Even regular sized kits like the many, many forms of Zaku are great for customising for your own kind of personal army.
Ooh nice suggestion - I'll have a look at that one!
@@GrayPrimer another few kits I can recommend for their shelf presence is the HG Nightingale, and HG Gaplant. The latter of which, can also transform, while the nightingale is best paired up with the RG Hi-Nu Gundam; one of the best three Real Grade kits, along with the regular RG Nu Gundam, and the RG Sazabi.
But if you REALLY have a pocket to burn, good luck in trying to find the 2 foot, 9 inch tall Neo Zeong. (And/Or Narrative Version.)
Otherwise, if you want a simpler kit to mess with, the original High Grade GM is worth about $10.
Oh, I also recommend the Loto Double pack, mainly because of how dinky they are, and all parts can fit on 3 runners each.
The only instance of colour plastics in gw stuff is the clear green for necrons.
If you think multicolored runners are cool the injection molded articulated hands and joints will blow you mind
No way! That sounds amazing 🤩
@@GrayPrimer I’ve seen you’ve tried your hands at that with the RG Zeta, if you wanna see Injection molding magic get the RG Epyon, the hands I’m referring to are in some MGs and while cool they’re not the most solid.
Bandai Hobby is Japanese black magic when it comes to model kits, they spend so much of their profits on their tech behind the production just to flex on everybody. There's also Kotobukiya, but get ready to see some weird stuff along with the cool if you try their products. They have an entire line called FRAME ARMS, though they doo need touching up and tightening of the joints a lot more than Bandai's stuff. Recommended Real Grades are the Crossbone X1, Zeong, Unicorn, Force Impulse, or if you want to see just how hard Bandai dunks on everyone else in the scale model kit buisness, the Real Grade Sazabi, Nu Gundam, or Hi-Nu Gundam. Real Grade God Gundam just came out earlier this year so if your into old school martial arts movies, I cannot recommend it enough just based on the posability of that thing.
Thanks so much for all these incredible suggestions, and just in time for Christmas! Also, thanks for watching!
wait until you find out that bandai in 90's crazy multiple colours mould in 1 part
A kit of a tonally fitting mobile suit for someone coming from vast experience with 40k. For this has one of the darker histories behind its creation. Sure, Gunpla kits are generally depicting war machines of some flavor, but this one.... it's a bit special with the nature of its creators' closets' skeletons.
Spoilers for an old Gundam video game:
The EXAM system equipped suits basically pull from a comatose woman's soul/psyche to enhance ordinary pilots' performance to levels on par with the specials. She had no say in this fate, and every time the system is fired up on a machine, it hurts her soul/mind. Also, these units have a tendency to make their pilots go berserk.
Wow - grim dark Gundam! Thanks for sharing this!
@@GrayPrimer
Glad to be informative.
Though it's not fully grimdark as there is the implication that destroying all the EXAM system suits would let her find peace and maybe wake from her coma.
this doesnt even touch on there REALLY advanced stuff like under gates and multi gate parts
great first great gunpla!!
Cheers Joe!
There is even a whole nother world of kit bashing and custom models if you want to give em that original extra look.
You’re completely right, there’s a tonne of stuff out there!!
@@GrayPrimer He's been venturing into Kitbashes for 40K. I still maintain those Gundam would make for some nice Ork Killer kanz!
On Gunpla. Let's see how you found this.
For my first ever Gundam, it's been a great introduction!
It's always funny watching Warhammer nerds do the inverse of what I did.
Lol if different colors on one runner is amazing to you wait till you see the kits that have multiple colors on one part like some of the figures with multiple color eyes or rg kits with fully molded articulated parts you don’t have to assemble to get articulated they come out of the sprew assembled
That sounds incredible!
It's not that different than building a Tau.
I did the opposite Gunpla lead me to Warhammer. I never thought about Gundams as Tau proxies though.
Thanks for checking out the video, and yeah some Gunpla would be incredible Tau proxies!
The best part about all this is that Bandai's technology is only getting better, and they're keeping the prices low despite that
100% I can't wait to build more!
@@GrayPrimer A couple of my personal favorites I can recommend: HGWFM Calibarn, HG GM Quel, MG Freedom 2.0, MG GM Sniper 2, RG Wing Gundam TV Version and RG Hi Nu Gundam are all awesome.
Man you should look into the master grade or real grade Gundam kits.
I love how they grade their kits, and the articulation just gets cooler and cooler the higher you go!
funny how i wasn't the only one to consider using gunpla for tau armies, would be fun to fit it into the lore but too bad youd have to play tau
It'd at least make the experience a tiny bit more fun. Lol
@@GrayPrimer it really would, especially if GW gives the tau better close range/melee options
FYI, It's pronounced gun-dum. There is a lot of crossover between the Gunpla and Wargaming hobbies.
I keep seeing more and more of my Warhammer buddies trying out Gundam these days. Thanks for checking out the video!
and this is only a high grade, i would say only build master grade they are a bit bigger and have way more details in them.
Cheers for the recommendation!
Be careful because if you buy one, you'll buy another...a d then before you know it, you'll have 60 kits, a mix of HG, and RG, several MGs, and one MGEX.
I was standing in Forbidden Planet looking at Gundam when I read your comment. 😂
you missed a vulcan cannon on the chest
Well spotted, thanks for that!
Wait till he builds rg hi nu gundam

No worries, I still appreciate your advice!
