A friend of mine was curious to see how I would custom paint a GUNDAM model so he bought this one for me. I figured I would make a model about it just for the heck of it!

This...This made me fall in love with you Jay. Platonic love, but love none the less. I name all my computers after gundams.
I was excited for the end result because he said "I don't like the color scheme", but when he literally just painted it all one color is when he lost me
Don't like the color scheme.... WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Fr fr
Fun fact - the creator of the show Tomino Yoshiyuki originally wanted the Gundam to be a single monotone colour as well - in either all white or all grey, so that it looks more like a piece of military equipment, but the sponsors (who make the toys) rejected that idea because the sponsors intended the show to be targeted at 7 year olds and from their own sales data they know their target audience wants bright colours on their giant robots, so as a compromise Tomino asked the mechanical designer of the show to put in the blue red and yellow highlights, but still kept a lot of the machine white like the limbs, waist and head. Tomino never gave up on the monotone idea though, so in his novelisation of the show the protagonist upgrades his original Gundam (which is technically the G-2) to the G-3 varient in the later half of the story - which only has internal upgrades but externally looks the same - but spots an entirely grey paint job. So Jayz actually unknowingly re-created the G-3 Gundam.
"I don't like this color scheme, check this out instead *puts a grey blob in the table* mutch better right?"
He also removed the frikkin v fin
Nice coat of surface primer, now when are you gonna finish it?
HAHAHA
😂
Ikr I'm like..its grey

Yoooo HAHAHAH
Gunpla is usually designed to be simple and intuitive so everyone can enjoy building them even though they're not model kit veterans. But the true beauty of the hobby comes in customization. You can buy metal parts for your kit. You can make your own custom parts. You can kitbash and create your own details. And gunpla encourages people to do just that.
I love how this is a video of a man absolutely fucking up all the major steps of building Gunpla while trying to talk shit about it. The painting, build errors, and fucking up the instructions.
I mean, I'm not going to try and act like Gunpla is ever going to be on the level of difficulty on that Yamato model, but I should correct you on a few things. The MG (Master Grade 1/100 Scale) you got is in no way worth 200 bucks. MG's are about 35 to 70. That pricepoint is more in line with PG's (Perfect grade 1/60 Scale) that have just as many runners as your Yamato with the more expensive ones also including LED kits. Yes the RG (Real Grade 1/144 Scale) kits you talked about are smaller scale with more intricate parts, but I should mention they tend to simplify the real hard parts like the inner frame and hands so they aren't as fun to build and customize like a PG is. PG is definitely worth the experience, but overall I like MG's as a good balance.
Omg it's AegisRick
You missed HG which are same scale as RG and way super simplified and are the cheapest versions, but this makes them perfect for customizing.
@AegisRick forget about that, he's just showing off
btw I love gunpla and MG is my best friend
The V is missing on the head unless he intentionally didnt put it on
Yeah he has no idea what he is talking about.
"This is so easy [...] I already broke a piece" what?? lol Gunpla is meant to be easy because they go for mass appeal. The kit you built is roughly $50 - so you could buy 6 for the price of your Yamato and make a nice diorama/scene. I agree ships are waaay more time consuming, but I wouldnt say much more difficult besides the glue. I personally like to use glue as little as possible on all kits. I actually painted my RX-78 OYW version because I didnt like the pale colors and got them closer to the bright anime colors.
jay this is like the verge, for gundam.....
Oof 😂😂
Dem's fightin' words...
Compares Yamato battleship to just a "master" grade gundam......no Jay.... just no.... if you were benchmarking gpus you just compared a 1660 to a 2080. Try a perfect grade gundam kit.. more in line.
and do all the extra stuff properly repainting it not just spraying the whole kit gray do the custom panel lines the panel lining the decals etc.
I mean he did say he wasnt a Gundam fan... so he had no interest in taking his time in building and painting it properly or informing himself about higher grade models before making a comparison between a higher grade tamiya kit vs a master grade gundam kit.
Maybe a high resolution model gundam
@turdy man if he just sprays a whole.perfect grade gray hes gonna piss off so many people

Didn't the creator of Gundam itself not like the colors in the first place?
@@yokogoph I cant remember exactly but it was expected at first to be a more neutral coloring, the colorful theme was due to selling of toy-models.
On real warfare the suits would follow colours based entirely on the environment used and that would lead to very little veariety, on shows and fiction in general is a understandable compromise to choose colorful suits to add variety and even personality.
Using a suit of the same line of production but in a different colour would make you a primary target, if the show was 100% realistcic would be boring, is just realistic enough and is fine as it is.
This man really said he used google translate for one of the most understandable instructions.

@@vladracus hi-res kits are way simpler tho. Jay is shitting on gunpla's complexity
My dude...try a PG gunpla
You’re comparing a $50 mid range Master Grade Gundam kit to a $200 Yamato. A Perfect Grade is a much more fair comparison, Adam Savage had his mind blown by one of those.
There’s also a lot of variety in gundam Mobile suit designs than what it looks like on the surface.
Don’t like the classic white, blue, red, and yellow colors? Get a model of a suit not used by the main character
Prefer something wildly different to the classic gundam look? Some of the antagonist suits are nuts like the Sazabi, Nightingale, and The O
Prefer a more realistic utilitarian mecha and not something that looks like a toy? Get a grunt suit like the Jesta, Jegan, and Geara Doga. Even the aforementioned antagonist suits above fit the bill.
Don’t like the level of detail? Go with an MG Ver Ka. Or Perfect Grade kit. Or scratchbuild and kitbash. GBWC is a great showcase of what’s possible.
Jay, I respect you. But you seem pretty closed minded in this video.
honestly tho, it's nice to hear from an outsider perspective on gundam kits. the whole snap fit thing is really their selling point. and the fact that there is no need to paint them straight out of the box, for the most part, really draw in beginners and casuals alike. even for the high difficulty kits like the perfect grade line, so long as you follow the manual carefully, you can build them straight out of the box. then its up to you to leave it like that or improve upon what was given to you.
and to quote the anime "Gunpla is freedom."
"The painting is where its at"
>Sprays it solid gray
>Couple of paint chips
@edmunds tomsons one is iconic, the other looks unfinished
Yeah, looks a little bit bare, but the original scheme does make it look exactly like a toy.
@edmunds tomsons before I start Gundams are fictional, so what type of camo is solid grey, 2 you dont need camo when your 10+ stories tall, 3 Gundams usually are colored in relation to the nation theyre from and lastly saying something is iconic then calling it dogshit makes no sense the fact that it is iconic in a positive way makes your opinion worthless. As for Jay he continued to shit talk the gundam even when he claimed hes not "trying to" , he went into it with a bias mentality so obviously his end product would look like shit.
people can make whatever the fuck they want with these and I think Jay's point was that there's no reason why people would get like 10 gundams instead of one, more expensive, but better Yamato
@edmunds tomsons if you know anything about marketing and psychology prime colors (red blue green yellow )are used heavily cause its memorable, for example like McDonald's red and yellow so "all the other nonsense" includes the iconic colors of the gundam. my final point that you seemed to gloss over many countries used those same colors for the flag and it is a show about war so why not kill your enemies in you country colors. so again your opinion is useless when there is a logical reason why those colors are used.
Despite the conclusion of this video, I hope you continue to take a look at building Gundams. Or rather start looking at customizing your own Jayztwocents edition either with scratch building or kit bashing. Building gundams is one of those things that can be as difficult or as easy as you would want it to be.
Yup, you can make gunpla as difficult as you'd like. There are custom gunpla builders out there that will do days worth of work on a single limb and the end results are absolutely stunning.
Indeed. Personally, I put a few hours into a limb, I have yet to start doing much painting. But I take a lot of care to sand, smooth, and buff/shine the parts, or attempt to add some minor battle damage to others. Not looking forward to dismantling some of my kits once I have an airbrush, but I do look forward to being able to really customize my kits.
I watched this video a year ago and at the time I thought building gunpla was time consuming but when I researched into more model kit hobbies I truly saw true horror. The amount of time it would take to build a ship model kit is insane. But personally for me the appeal of gundam model kits is that you can just snap em together and put on a shelf. No extra tools required.
Asian: colorful Mechs
Western: Dull colored Mechs
Yoshiyuki Tomino: Dull colored mechs
Studio Sunrise: colorful mechs
Yoshiyuki Tomino: fine 😤😤
Titanfall: Both Dull and colorful Mechs??XD
Bro. You clearly only saw a few gundams and mech.
The v fin is gone
@@gundamnmechas8518 wasnt tominos the blue & grey though?
As someone who’s always been afraid to try a gunpla, all I learned from this is that boat people are insane...
You're not wrong. Bote hobby is a wild world that airplane, tank, and mecha people don't touch.
I know this is 5 months late, but if you wanna try building gunpla, go for it. It's fun as hell to just build them and pose them, but because they're all snap-together it opens up for doing things with them later. I've put together several kits only to go back later and clean them up better after learning some things. And they are way easier than real world military replica kits like planes and tanks and such, I personally won't touch those because I have the hobby fears that I'll ruin them and get really frustrated.
Just grab a HG 1/144 kit for about $25 (or less in many cases) and give it a go. Those are great entry level and the newer ones are even quite detailed for the size and price, especially if you go for one from the Origin series. I really like the amount of detail they have compared to kits of the same design from the past, much more grounded. Master grades are a good step up from there, Real grades seem to be hit and miss so if you want to try those really do some research to see what others are saying about them. I've yet to throw money at perfect grade, but I'll be excited to finally do so as they look a ton of fun and from what I've gathered look pretty amazing out of the box.
Anyway, sorry for the long windedness lol.
"The detail on the gun is abysmal"

My first build was a 1/44 Sniper II that I didn't paint at all and hardly denubbed. Definitely a good place to start especially since the gun detail is actually decent on both the beam sniper and the "SMG" style gun provided in the kit. Good lord lmao, truly the pc builder mindset on full display
I’ve amassed about 350 gundam kits, all the real grade, perfect grade and most of the master grade. I think you’d really enjoy the challenge of the perfect grade, and you can get photo etch parts as well as metal components to really detail them up as well. The parts are not as fiddly as the yamato, but there are an awful lot of them! I got into it just because I remembered all the cartoons from my youth...and I needed a hobby!
Level of details and sizes for Gundam models go from:
HG (High Grade) 1/144
RG (Real Grade) 1/144
MG (Master Grade) 1/100
PG (Perfect Grade) 1/60
Jay you should try building a PG one next time, those typically use some metal parts as well. Maybe try a PG Gundam Unicorn, or Gundam Strike Freedom, they look quite a bit cooler than the original Gunam.
There are 1/550 which are nearly all Mobile Armors
A PG is not really hard as a kit tho if it's from bandai because everything is made to fit granted that you are following the instructions and not having a defective mold (which is really rare). The thing that can make gunpla hard is with the resin kits and especially the mechanicore/elyn/gsystem kits which is basically similar to his yamato that has photo etch, LED, a fucking ton of parts, and a really hard to understand instruction with a subpar quality fitting.
@@Kirinketsu_ get him the 1/144 dentrobium

GMs are less broken and have better paint jobs.
@@afelias GMs are basically meant to be customized
The one grip I have is that he is using an old style kit to judge the build quality over the insanely progressed tech they used to make the newer kits. newer RG's, MG's, and PG's are so much more complicated than his kit. They are still "snap fit" but that is almost necessary for non-static kits (ship/plane kits dont have a ton of moving parts like gunpla since gunpla is meant to have lots of moving parts, possible transformations, and ability to do a lot of poses)
Out of touch old man compares a $35 kit thats designed to be easy to build and show accurate to a hundreds of dollar battle ship model thats designed for real life accuracy.

If you can say that. Based on the end product and his attitude, he is not a fan. I would be surprised if he ever did another one. I was left disappointed by the video when I know Jay has a lot of talent and could have really done a lot better.
So I think the sell point of Gunpla is that they're decently easy to put up and looks pretty cool at the same time. I think that is a good thing to be honest, as I personally don't think I would have the patience to play with a lot of glue. So I am not really insulted by the comment. It's also why the company that makes them creates animes that specifically target younger kids. With that said, I think the thing with any model kit is that it can be as hard as you want it to be. There is still a lot of things that you can do after a base assembly.
Watching at the start.. Cool Jay, I highly recommend gundam kits for model hobbyists. First point: I don't care about the anime, and you don't need to care to enjoy these. They have genius design and range from stupid easy $12 high grade to $250 monster project Perfect Grade. They're like fun puzzles or lego sets that leave you with an art piece when you're done. You've got a noteably easy (and a bit loose) Master Grade that's $42 on Amazon right now (your link doesn't work for me btw). I'm not big on painting, but I put a lot of care into cleaning nubs off and getting the stickers right. Some people who paint also completely change the anime colors to military metal schemes. Nothing sacrilegious about it and it looks badass.
Mid way... no harm, some kits come out solid as a rock, some kits explode it your hands. Reviews cover which is which pretty well. The solid connections do NOT come back apart unless you angle cut the pegs first. No one ever claimed master grade is a hard kit. Grade means quality not difficulty. Master Grade translates to "fairly detailed kit with some gimmicks".
End... I don't normally get annoyed when people talk crap about Gundams, especially when they do hard models. To each their own,.... but you complain about all Gundams just because the $40 kit doesn't stack up against your $250 kit... No sh!t. Dude, do like 5 seconds of research on things before you post about it. You know you have this problem.
There are so many different models and color schemes you can get and paint however you want, who cares if you don't like the colors on that particular kit..... Anyway, I like metallic color schemes and the wearing looks great, but you left him looking so monochromatic like he skipped paint day at the factory. Tip: Put glue on the loose joint to thicken it, let dry and then reattach it to make it stay without losing mobility.
I'm glad you had fun Jay and I hope you don't write them off. You did a good professional job putting him together too, which I didn't expect.
I'm sure a Perfect Grade MS-06F Zaku II with it's more German military style and green color scheme for $125 would be a much better choice for Jay. Though it's a bit older so it's got a loose bit here and there too. Astray Red Frame 1/60 Perfect Grade is a very new kit praised for being solid, but I know Jay won't like how it looks.
Don't forget the $300+ monster Dendrobium and Neo Zeong HGs
PG range from $50-$1,000 or well now used up to $1,500
If you look at the gap on the legs, he didn't fully push it in. I think watching maybe some of the more recent anime gives a better feel for how these "mobile suits" work and probably help with the painting bit. Would really hope to see him get maybe a more modern kit take a look at the details and functionality they built into these models.
Yeah, i didn't like how he complains about $40 vs $250 kit. Unsubscribed...

I mean he's not wrong. Gundam model kits (especially real grade on up over the past decade) _are_ hella straightforward to build *and* detailed; I love them for that. It gives you a great looking kit out of box, but there are still plenty of options to make it look even more "life-like." That's where the real enthusiasm comes in.

lets fucking go!!! I will 100% support more of these. I'll never be able to do this myself, its nice to watch others do it
I want to see a Perfect Grade Full Armor Unicorn. You might even go watch the OVAs for Unicorn. Great series.
Good kit, but I'm sure it's not his visual style preference or type of show.
@@Freedbot you never know, people surprise you sometimes.
When I was in elementary school in the late 90's, they had these at GameStop by my house. I spent my allowance on these like every other week. Back then, they were the perfect ones you talk about in your video. I still find their little arms and guns and heads and bodies at my parents house.
who else is triggerd about the v-fin
Your hardcore Gundam builders paint them and even in some cases, go as far as "kitbash" to make custom mobile suits. You should look at the Perfect Grade kits that use screws, springs and even lighting. They're also HUGE
To be fair they're all toys...
I'm not talking shit either, I'm into warhammer and bust-painting myself.
Yea it's a toys, but not for kids
Laurent Vic yeah, and it's great! 😁
Actually, they're called figures /s
and at the end of the video he starts doing what we all end up doing, just starts playing with it, PEW PEW PEW, WHOOOOOOSH
Man, despite the very explicit title, i thought actually he was about to build a Gundam theme based custom water-cooled PC lol
i respect you for getting the og gundam for this
The perfect crossover would be a perfect grade space battleship yamato for JAy.
I absolutely love your DIY/model/car tinkering videos, it inspires my own crafty hobbies.
Jay Calls Gundam Cartoon...
Anime Fans: Its not Cartoon REEEEEEEEEEEE....
I bought my first gundam for quarantine as well. Glad I'm not alone.
Alright, who's gonna show Jay the PG Exia Lightning Model?
The way you paints and details shows that you are not an amateur model builder. Anyway the end product looks cool ala military style, would have been better if there are more decals. Great job on the model.
Funny how people compare things: 'things you like vs things you never explored with' 🚮
As someone who has built well over 200 gundam models, it is cool to see the hobby get highlighted in this way, but you really are just getting to the tip of the ice berg as far as customization and things you can do. Metal etch parts are out there as are resin kits, line scribing, scratch building, dioramas, etc... there is a huge level of progression that comes after the out of box build, if you decide to go that route. Just wanted to highlight a few things that might pique your interest, in case you felt like you wanted to revisit it!
"I don't wanna poo poo on these kits" then he said that they're TOYS wahahahahhahaha #trigger
Car enthusiast, Pc enthusiast, now gunpla. You sir are a god
A perfect vid to watch now we're in the endgame
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!! WAITING FOR AGES FOR JAYZ TO DO GUNDAM!!!
You could try Perfect Grade, especially GP-03 or Unicorn. That might be fun to watch.
Evil
Is there PG GP-03?
Perfect grade would be much better.. ofc it doesnt have dirt on Tamiya's battleship siries (like if there anything more challenging then that?)..
but it does give a bit more challenge then MG
@@jeffzero01 Yup in the 0083 series.
@@jeffzero01 Oh you're right, there's only high grade, for Dendrobrium anyway. That's disappointing, though Perfect Grade would be huge...
I am just getting into Gundam! Stumbled across this video. Very cool!
Usually I like this guys videos, and was genuinely excited to see his experience building his first gunpla, but (honestly) the video leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and (at times) comes across as a little condescending.
I think your friend who gifted you the kit gave you the wrong impressions.
Bandai gunpla kits aren't meant to be "difficult" or "hard" and are meant to be more approachable. (not just for those getting into the model making hobby) Just as you said; Just takes time to build.
I think if your friend didn't give you that misinformation (which feels like what anyone who's never built a gunpla kit would say) your viewpoint/comparison (and the overall tone of the video) would be a lot better.
I very much enjoy watching you build things. Wouldn't mind seeing more of this.
