  • This is the third time I have tried uploading this video. Let's hope this one sticks, but anyways...
    Hello there! This is a guide for Warhammer fans meant to introduce them to the vast realm of Mobile Suit Gundam and the expansive Gunpla model range that accompanies it! Here I try to briefly explain the premise of Gundam and its many iterations and spin-offs while covering the intricacies of each Gunpla model range and how to build them.
    I spent many hours editing this video, so if you enjoyed it or it was helpful to you, please consider sharing it or subscribing!
    I obviously do not own any Gundam footage. All Gundam footage is used copyright of Sunrise/Bandai Namco and is solely for educational purposes for those unfamiliar with the Gundam franchise. Please don't block my video again Bandai, I'll be good. I just want to be done with editing this project 😞

    A constant theme in Gundam is it's anti-war message. But what a lot of people miss is it's deeper message of "Understanding>Conflict". Through understanding one another humanity can evolve into something more. Although in different timeline this form of understanding can be different (Newtypes in UC, trading blows in FC or playing Gunpla Battles in the Build series), the message still stays the same. For a story all about war, conflict and deaths, I feel like this message is really heartwarming and optimistic.

      @@TheLichsLaboratory It's opposite in its themes, but similar in its bigger picture. At the end of every show, we are led to believe that "Things are bad still, but atleast the war is finally over" but then a new show comes where Earth is once again in a horrible space war. In Turn A Gundam it is revealed all of the different Gundam shows are cannon, just at different points in time, and millenia after the first One Year War humanity fought a war so brutal, it reset them back to the literal stone age and had to restart life on Earth (except for a small moon colony). 40k is grim dark where you know humanity has so many enemies, a peaceful life might never occur again in the galaxy. With Gundam, the grim darkness is knowing humanity is forever stuck in the great filter unable to leave the solar system (and those who did are STILL waging war, as learned in Turn A)

    For anyone still watching this now, super recomemd the new HG witch from mercury line, which came with a new anime being released. Their plastic wizardry only increased with this new line, using pretty much no polycaps and still having almost complete inner frames, with some immaculate preprinted parts. If anything they seem like a bridge between RG and HG with just how impressive they are.

    Something interesting to note with the RG line is how it’s evolved over the years, and how there are essentially two types of RGs: The classic style, and the Mini MG style.
    The earlier models all relied on the Advanced MS Joint frame to make up the bulk of its joints. These are parts that are articulated right on the runner, a cool feat of engineering but the over-reliance on them caused some stability issues. These include loose parts and loosening joints if you messed with them too much. It’s this style of frame that both allowed the RG Zeta to have a full transformation at 1/144 scale, and caused it to be an extremely delicate kit. That’s not to say these types of RGs are bad, some of the later ones like the Astray, Wing EW, and 00 raiser are pretty good. And even the earlier ones will treat you well as long as you treat them well. Remember, these are models to be displayed and not toys to be played with.
    Then in 2017 Bandai released the RG Unicorn. While still utilizing the Advanced MS Joint parts throughout the frame, they were mostly for the transformation, with much of the main joints being constructed like a Master Grade. Since then Bandai have reserved the Advanced MS Joint parts in RGs to areas where they need them, like the Core fighter of the RG Crossbone, the complex shoulder joint of the RG God Gundam, and the Wing joints of the RG Wing TV. These newer RGs are designed pretty much like mini MGs making them much more solid compared to their older grade-mates. Every RG since and including the Unicorn have been huge hits. Seriously, every time a new RG kit is released these days, at least one person will call it the new king of Gunpla.

    One thing I want to point out about gunpla specifically of the hg variety, as of now the innovations made for them are pretty damn clever, some of them have almost full inner frames, a lot of the newer ones are getting amazing possibility and colour separation, and when it comes to the new line of witch from mercury hg kits they introduced the process of 'in-molding' which is molding a coloured design behind a clear piece which if you look at images of look godamn beautiful, stickers be damned. Not to mention even with kits as good as the witch from mercury kits, I'd say they're still relatively cheap. I for one can't wait what they can think of next.

    Well, even though Bandi isn't going after the Wargaming market, 3rd party designers are. Mechatop Tabletop Wargame is a system that allows you to take Gunpla and other models of various scales and gives you a rule system for utilizing said models in tabletop combat. My friend developed a 28mm game system called Mobile Suit Gundam: UC Conflicts, which is closer to a traditional tabletop skirmish game focused on Gundam's One Year War. That one should be coming to Kickstarter soon. He's getting the licensing figured out with Bandai.

    So for Entry Grade. These are actually pretty new line, and it kinda represented the other pinnacle of Gunpla engineering Bandai have accumulated, in the sense on how to make a good plastic model as cheap as possible. While there are lots of hollow parts, the articulations are actually very good considering the price with extended joints being used quite alot. One of the best innovation is on how Bandai made the eye on the head. Those are not stickers, those are all molded-parts with gaps in-between to simulate the usual black part that separate the eye and the rest of the face. I highly recommend Entry Grade for people wanting to get into Gunpla, especially with some of them even come in plastic bag and can cost as low as 8$ or less (without weapons). It can even serves as cheap models if you wanted to practice scribing or coloring or just want to test some paints.

    • @benji45645
      @benji45645 Рік тому +8

      For people in states that have Target stores, there is also an exclusive america-themed entry grade available for like $10. Looks super out of place in the lego aisle, but it's a great entry level build. Classic RX78 design that's blocky and simple, and iirc you don't need to cut the sprues (like the SD kits btw). Really easy build that's like a tutorial level for gunpla; you get to do very simple steps to very quickly see something come together, which makes the bigger kits less scary. Also, for HG, there are a lot of UC designs, which fall under Earth and Zeon, which, as "real robots", have many different variations of a base frame (Zaku II = Gouf = Red Comet, etc.), so they follow very similar standards within the unit line while still being distinct. If you liked building the base Zaku, try a Zaku variant if you are uncomfortable tackling a whole new design.

    • @Th3UnluckyGam3r
      @Th3UnluckyGam3r Рік тому +1

      Another great feature of the EG line is toolless sprues. Every part is designed to just push off the sprue with minimal damage. Having made all the EG lines so far, the RX-78 and the RX-93 are absolutely amazing and simple kits with a surprising amount of detail and articulation. Stay away from the EG Strike, the legs are a bit fiddly and have a tendency to fall off with even a minimal amount of movement.
      I've taken to getting EG kits and building them at work on a lunch break, the build is so painless this is easily achievable. They're cheap enough that I don't mind them being on my desk and they're a great conversation starter!

    Entry Grade does NOT sacrifice articulation. They are incredibly well articulated, and have full color separation with zero stickers. They sacrifice detail, especially inner detail, which you normally don't get on a high grade anyway.
    And Build Fighters Tri was at least as good as Build Fighters, with the team dynamic leading to much more interesting battles. There were also a lot of great designs in Tri. Also, you missed the Gunpla Builders Beginning G, which I think is also separate from the Build Fighters universe.

    Fun fact: Tomino attributes the survival of Gundam to its female fans, who were around before they started making plastic model kits. If it weren’t for them, it’s very likely we wouldn’t have Gundam as we know it today.
    Shout out to the fujoshi.
    Also, I would recommend the RG Tallgeese and MG Barbatos as intros to those two grades. They are both really marvels of tiny plastic robot engineering. The Tallgeese was such a fun first RG for me that it’s the only kit I’ve been thinking about buying again just to build all over again. The Barbatos is a really sick build, and it looks just amazing when you’re done.

    • @Smilomaniac
      @Smilomaniac 8 місяців тому

      I often see this myth being passed around as truth, but it’s more likely gunpla interests saved the franchise.
      Tomino’s remark is an observation, it’s not a fact that ‘women saved gundam’, but it’s often used as a political battering ram. Less ‘fun fact’ than activist nonsense.

    • @GrayXephyr
      @GrayXephyr 8 місяців тому +4

      @@Smilomaniac I more often see ppl attributing it to both. It's undeniable that Gundam had a large female following before Sunrise produced plastic model kits, and the combined cult following the show had before plamo was introduced made their own content to show support. Gunpla definitely saved the show in terms of marketability, but there's no reason to dismiss the contribution of early female fans as "activist nonsense".

    • @Smilomaniac
      @Smilomaniac 8 місяців тому +1

      @@GrayXephyr There isn’t really much to support the notion of a particularly or notably big female following, it was just the screening that Tomino observed.
      Sure, the models were released and sold after the series, but interest for the product is gauged well before then.
      Nothing wrong with any of it, it’s the constant mentioning of a spurious claim that keeps being used as some sort of political win, especially within the fandom.
      It’s a fun anecdote but it’s conjecture (as is the gunpla reasoning, but I have experience in toy distribution).
      It’s come up a lot with the recent WfM show, but the sales here (European gunpla shop) is still skewed heavily towards men. The two Aerials sell out while everything else is limping by.
      At cons we only see women pick up pokemon kits or at best get gunpla kits for their sons.
      To be honest, I think Tomino noticed a small skew and tried to run with the idea, but in practice you don’t see it pan out like this.
      It’s rare that products that aren’t marketed specifically to girls and women get any traction with them, it takes something big like Harry Potter to do it.
      It’s why you can’t half-ass a franchise into the mythical wider audience like Star Wars has tried. It makes money, sure, but Disney has suffered devastating losses and reputational damage with their poorly written female leads. There are no flocks of women storming the toy isles, in fact there’s a horrific surplus of toys because they lost a lot of the appeal to boys at the same time.
      Don’t get too invested in your “fact”, it’s almost certainly not true to any meaningful degree.

      As there are "english" kits they produce, in limited quantities.. and a lot less options.

    Gundam kits are basically made by a company called bandai, and they have other non gundam kits too!
    Theyve introduced a line of kits specifically for newbies to plamo building, and is as customizable as the Build series kit.
    Take a look at the 30 mins mission series and it' sister of battle version the 30min sisters.
    Both series can used each other's parts and togther with anything using 40mm pegs as well as any of the build series accessories

    • @jframe9715
      @jframe9715 Рік тому +2

      The 30 mins mission series is Bandai's answer's to Kotobukiya's Frame arms and MSG line, while their 30mins sisters are the same for Kotobukiya's Frame Arms Girl and Megami Device. Kotobukiya MSG are superior to Bandai's 30 mins mission so do Koto's Megami Device line that made the 30 min sisters series look like beginner series. With Koto's utilization of 3mm for most of their Frame Arms, Frame Arms Girl, MSG and Megami Device series those series become very customize.

    • @spearsage
      @spearsage Рік тому +1

      I agree with what J FRAME said, but would like to add another side to the story.
      Kotobukiya's products tend to be very pricy when compared to Bandai's. Megami Device and Frame Arms Girls are at least nearly thrice the price of a 30 minute sisters. Similar case with frame arms in comparison to 30 minute missions. The '30 minute' part of the product name make sense given that it's engineered to be very quick and easy to assemble.
      In any case, at the end of the day, it really depends on how much money you're willing to spend. Design-wise, I personally enjoy Kotobukiya's mechs (macross, frame arms, and megami device) more, but the price tag kinda prevent me from buying too many every month, which is a bummer. I'd also hesitate more when I want to kitbash or repaint.
      But if you don't mind the price, then, by all means, take a gander at Kotobukiya's offerings.

    Despite its name, Entry Grade is actually a new gunpla line which focuses on kits easy to assemble by beginners. However, unlike the prior First Grade gunpla which was conceptually the same but did sacrifice articulation and detail, the Entry Grade is incredibly advanced, with full color parts separation and full articulation. All the Entry Grade gunpla released in fact are actually superior in most ways to their High Grade counterparts, with the High Grade's only advantage being their accessories. Entry Grades are also the easiest kits to get into by design, as they're not only incredibly cheap for what they offer, but they're also designed to be assembled without the use of any tools, i.e. you can snap the parts out of the runners using only your fingers, instead of having to cut them out with a nipper.
    Another thing to note: in recent years Bandai has been gradually phasing out the use of polycaps in their kits and replacing them with ABS joints, with many new gunpla designs coming out this year being devoid of polycaps in their construction, such as the HG Witch From Mercury line.
    It's also worth noting that the RG line is now currently considered to be the creme-de-la-creme of Gunpla among the fandom, due to massive improvements to the line since the RG Unicorn Gundam that saw them become the most stable (i.e. no more floppy joints or parts flying out of nowhere when touched), more articulate, and most detailed kits in gunpla, many times surpassing even their Master Grade counterparts. Kits like the RG Nu Gundam, RG Hi-Nu Gundam, and the RG God Gundam especially are considered to be among the pinnacle of Gunpla building, only perhaps surpassed by the PG Unleashed RX-78-2, and only because the latter is a larger kit.

    As someone who has been in Gunpla since the early 2000's (I started right when Seed started airing in japan), until last year I was resisting getting into 40k VERY hard as they just didn't seem to have good value per amount of plastic. I thought it was ridiculous that I could get this amazing engineered robot in MG scale with full articulation and sometimes even LED features (for instance the 00 MGs), for the same price as was being charged for a squad of 5-10 tiny static soft-detailed soldiers; comparing to the vehicles made it that much worse :D but Bandai has kind of been on my shit list lately with the whole p-bandai thing, and one of my coworkers did 40k and was encouraging me to get into it, so I've been dipping my toes in.
    Also, please PLEASE, and I ask this of EVERY person who does intros like this, PLEASE differentiate between Scale and Grade. While yes most of the grades are locked into one specific scale (RG and MG and PG for example), HG has encompassed almost all scales over the years (the OG Wing kits had HG 1/100 and 1/60 kits, for example). When I was first shopping for kits that is one of the things that confused the hell out of me for a while and I ended up missing out on some old and rare kits because of it.
    I'm working on getting updated videos of the collection, but I do have some in my channel about 10 years old - I think the count then was 600-800 kits - I'm well over 2k by now :D

The variance in some kits can make a loose fit or even if you manage to damage the pin or slot. i do keep some cement around to fix the odd piece that doesnt want to stay in place. it happen especially on old kits that the molds were used ad nauseam (or just the design not being as good. they changed the techniques post 2005)

    I think one of the best parts of Gunpla to me is that kits look fantastic out of the box and assembled and simply get better as you apply decals, panel line or weather the thing if you're in to showing wear-and-tear or battle damage. If you're getting a little bored with painting your warhams, gunpla might just be for you! Just remember that even panel lining is considered customisation in this hobby. It's perfectly fine to clip off the parts, shove them together and have a cool robot!
    Also, you will find that Bandai are leagues ahead of Games Workshop for their instructions and assembly.

    I'm right now super interested in the Poly Caps system. This means I could use that system as a generalist mechanism model kit system for my proyects? Or even as a prototyping system. That is fucking amazing. Like buy a bunch of poly caps and go to town with any idea I may have.

      Thank you very much! I hope it wasn't so much info that it overloaded you. I struggled when it came to striking a balance between informative and generalistic.
      The polycap system is meant to give articulation to simple slotted or ball-and-socket joints via friction fitting. If you fashion the connectors properly, you could theoretically give articulation to anything you'd want.
      If you're in the US I'd reccommend going to a place like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or even Barnes and Nobles and getting a cheap High Grade kit to see the polycap system first hand. Hobby Lobby in particular puts their kits at 40% off quite frequently if you're not particular about the kit you buy. Otherwise sites like Amazon or Gundamplanet may be online alternatives to consider

Lots of newer kits have abandoned the universal soft plastic polycap system for more mechanically complex joints designed for each model that are more solid and allow for better articulation. Polycaps are still used, but not quite as much as they used to.
      That doesn’t mean kitbashing is dead though, with enough skill you can still put anything together. Just look at the GBWC (Gunpla Builders World Cup) builds sprinkled throughout the video.

      Definitely. It's kind of like how people argue about Zelda timelines and whether or not it's all supposed to be interconnected or not. Not exactly 1:1 but it's sort of the same idea

      Also of note, Reconguista in G shouldn't really be considered a Universal Century series by any means, it takes place several thousand years after the rest of Universal Century chronologically (and definitely not in between F91 and Victory like 6:31 says), and it uses its own calendar format, "Regild Century" or "RC". If anything, it should be paired with Turn A and Correct Century, since they both have "far future of other Gundam timelines" as part of their worldbuilding, and Reconguista uniquely shares some location names with Turn A.

    what i really like about gundam model's is that they can be as cheap or expensive as you want them to be, you can pick up a HG and come clippers for 35 bucks build it and call it a day, or you can add some panel liner and a clearcoat and make it look much better for only a bit more money and it'll still look great. some kit's (like the astray red frame) have a really unique design where a flat coat is not really what you might want..but neither is a clearcoat, or a satin coat so what I did was apply all 3 which just looks...amazing. white bits (which are mostly flat parts) in flat coat, black parts (mainly used in the chest armor) in a satin shine, and red parts (which tend to be round/tubular) in a high gloss clear. which just looks amazing when the light hits it and all it look was some panel liner and 3 can's of clearcoat no painting what so ever.
    where I recently picked up a car model since it had been about 20 years since I made one of those and open the box all black plastic....yay get to spend 40-80 bucks in paints and paintcans alone >.< it came out looking good but my god that 25 euro kit could have been a old PG or the downpayment to a new one by the time it was done especially the shell with the multiple layers of primer / color and clearcoat followed by polishing compound think I was in about 150 bucks by the end of it >.< but I got a bunch of paints I can also use on my gundam kits to have them stand out (some of the aluminium color from the engine block for pistons/cylinders to make them pop more....it works :P)

    As a long time Gundam and gunpla fan, this video does bring joy because I'm recently getting into WH(painting and lore just for now). So seeing others find interests in Gundam generally.
    -For starters, for those getting into Gundam, you can watch the OG(UC timeline). Which is the main series I would say, it spans a lot though. There are "standalone", or different universes. Series I would recommend(that's solely on you but what I think)is Iron Blooded Orphans, Seed, and Double O(00). But if you don't care for consistency or follow certain things: Thunderbolt and War in The Pocket for side story stuff. These 2 imo are a great watch(again, as I said for those who don't care). Can't think of others atm.
    -Gunpla, for beginners, I solely recommend HG which are the most hand-held of the "3" main grade sizes of plastic models(HG/RG, MG, PG. Theres a few more, these are the "main ones"). Prices do vary from each grade size, PG being the most expensive. Depending on your view of reasonable, cheap, or pricey.
    -HG overall good for beginners, reasonable price
    -RG similar size as HG but more detail as MG(meaning more part separation for better detail). A bit expensive or just expensive
    -MG is double the size of HG(for the most part, depends though). A bit higher in price but can vary
    -PG the biggest size you can get with these models(there's way bigger stuff but we're not getting into that). Usually the most expensive.
    But if you want to get in there, then MG. For the most recommend kits for gunpla, the Grand Daddy/OG, anything RX-78-2 gunpla is great for beginners being the easiest I would say to assemble.
    Sorry for wording or things not making some sense. If anyone else would like to add or chime in that'll help out those checking out Gundam/gunpla if they decide to get into the series and hobby

    The main thing I've looked at that has made me decide I will never get into tabletop warhammer is the absolutely ridiculous prices on small, non-articulated pieces of plastic, which you need to buy insane numbers of to make an army and play. There is just nothing there to justify the prices when compared to what bandai puts out.

    • @TheLichsLaboratory
      @TheLichsLaboratory  Рік тому

      Price is definitely the main issue for the matter. I used to be the exact same way, but after experiencing it little by little I'm now knee deep in it lol. It's just different appeals for different markets and it's totally fine to not be interested, but I wanted to focus on how to get into Warhammer for cheaper price points for those who were interested but felt like they couldn't.
      Thank you for your comment, I appreciate your time 😁

    Great video. I've been in the hobby since the 90s. While Entry Grade is somewhat simpler in construction, it's actually the newest entry into the Grades and currently even have better articulation than most High Grades. To date, there are only a few kits released - Gundam Rx-78-2 w/ and without the weapons set, Strike Gundam, Nu Gundam Rx-93 and Nu-Gundam Rx-93FF. There are earlier No-Grades (not in standard scale) which are recently reprinted mostly from the G-Gundam series. There are Re 1/100 which are newer versions or re-release of the 1/100 scale High Grades (current high grades are in the standard 1/144 scale). Oh and there are first grades which are now sually relegated as give-aways during Gundam Caravans or campaigns at 1/144 scale with very rudimentary articulation.
