This is a pretty good example of what the Toyota Supra Turbo A was capable of in stock form versus the competition. The Turbo A version of the MK3 Supra came with multiple improvements over the regular MK3 Turbo of the time, although an extremely limited production run for homologation purposes, they were quite potent. Rated at 267-273HP and weighing in at under 3400lbs they were about the same as the Z32 300zx Twin Turbo T-Top. With the added changes to the stock turbo CT-26 inducer (larger), intake system (larger throttle body, intercooler and intake piping) and running MAP instead of AFM, it had a better overall powerband than the Z32, (easily identified by the extra intercooler duct where the front license plate was located in this video). Mixed with upgraded brakes and roll bars it had upgraded handling and braking to boot. Even the 2.5 Twin Turbo 1JZ that came out later for the MK3 was really not much of an improvement, if any, over the Turbo A variant, and was considered inferior by most. The Z32 Twin Turbo T-Top on the other hand had the smaller Japanese market Z32 turbos rated at 280HP, missing out on the superior USDM turbos. It had superior handling and a superior chassis design to the MK3 Supra (as it should be for a later designed model), but not enough HP and TQ to really pull it's weight sufficiently on the track, especially with the undersized early version thinner brake rotors and easily heat-soaked aluminium brake calipers, famous for terrible brake fade after only a couple heated laps. In my opinion, the Z32TT never got the model updates it deserved as the years passed, like a "Turbo A" variant was for the Supra, until the last 2 years it was produced in Japan, and even then it wasn't really a HP increase, just structural, reliability and electrical. Still a terrific GT sports car with a huge amount of potential when upgraded in the correct areas of weakness, a true example of what the engineers were capable of from Nissan in those years along with the Silvia and Skyline GT-R.
More videos like this, please! I find it especially interesting they used the Skyline four door. it wasn't the fastest, but definitely appeared to be the most composed chassis on the track.
I love the music that starts at 10:28. It reminds me of Street Fighter and other arcades. I wish I knew where that music was from. The music that follows it at 11:28 is really cool, calm, and relaxing too. Mark 3 Supra is my favorite car here. Cool to see the Nissan 300ZX pulling off a win in the second heat against the Skyline GTS-T. I’ve never seen these professional drivers struggle so hard with any of the newer FD RX-7’s and Mk 4 Supra in the same way they struggled here with the FC RX-7 and Mk 3 Supra.
This video makes no sense, stock for stock a Z32 TT will walk away from any trim Mk3 with any engine in a straight line. Ive owned many of both and know this to be true 10 time out of 10. Why is 300zx so slow compared to other cars like the next gen rx7 and supra and 3000gt. As a kid I thought 300zx on same level as those cars but I guess it's just a level below.. lap time 1:13 vs gtr r33 and 94 supra and GTO times very between 1:07 and 1:09 that's full 4 seconds a lap faster than 300zx. Even up to 7 seconds a lap slower.
I guess you have to consider that the Z32 was engineered in the 80’s, while the other contemporary jdm cars were more 90’s, while using the Z32 and R32 as an example.
