- "Industrial Disease" is a song by the British rock band Dire Straits and written by Mark Knopfler. It appeared on their 1982 album Love over Gold.
The song was released as a single in the US and as a rare B-side to "Private Investigations" on cassette tape in the United Kingdom. The B-side to the US "Industrial Disease" single was "Solid Rock" from the previous Dire Straits album Making Movies.

This song was 41 years ahead of its time. Perfect for 2023.
Ele compunha muito bem! Gosto desta irreverência dele, do rock clássico aliada a inteligência dele em compor! Foi músico e também professor! Tinha que compor e escrever bem mesmo! Toca bem, voz linda e para completar presença de palco e charmoso! Aliás, essa Banda tinha ótimos músicos no geral!❤🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🇬🇧
Indeed!
I think the same heheh! The vid is cheesy as hell anyway! ONe of best songs by MK, lyrics are soooo spot on. It also might have some of the best one liners in Rock history, particularly "Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong"!
Expiration date: 3001
@@devilfan2k yeah but who reads those dates on the side of the box.🤣
This song is pure gold! My condolences to those of you who were not around in 1982!
Thank you 😫🙌
I was around when this song was new I might have been about 12 years old I still like this song and can remember "sultans of swing"
Thank God my parents were and introduced me to good music
My favorite song
If you were there around that time, don't forget your back pills
Best lyric ever, "Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong".
I prefer 'philosophy is useless, theology is worse...'
Yeea.. I know what your saying..However since I have an extremely high threshold of Pain I kept reading. Found Schopenhauer the world as Idea..And Ralph Waldo Emerson - Self Reliance...Non Corporate No politics way b4 the current level of BS
two imposters!... I am He!!!...
The lyrical rythmic change on the "Sociologists invent words that mean 'industrial disease' " line is beautiful.
I should play it to my son, who is into social science and economics 🙂
In my humble opinion, this is the best song ever written. I have been head over heels in love with it since 1982.
This song has ranked in my Top 20 best songs of all time since the day it came out.
It does seem to come crawling back into my mind over the years, again and again. Goodness me, could this be...
A top 5 favorite Dire Straits song to me! Criminal they never played it live a lot, except for probably 1982. Most clever lyrics I've ever heard in such a sociopolitical song, including Roger Waters' lyrics. Mark and band miming it as well as they can, including the guitar/keys action, with a few grins here and there. Listen to the bass line too in the main melody. Just simple quarter notes and not overdoing it. Very punchy and Alan Clarke's synth/piano playing is amazing! Telegraph Road is one of the best epic tracks by any band ever. Love Over Gold is just that, GOLD!
This song must have been really hard to perform live. But such a great song. Mark is such a musical genius.
This song doesn’t sound old at all! It never aged ❤
That little "Ting" when Mark snaps his fingers is awesome.
his style is unique, even some other 'masters' have a tough time covering his sound
Ahead of his time, nowadays you make this, and the next day you are in jail.. Mark is the best!!
@J Hemphill Splendid, indeed.
Agreed!
Perfect fit for 2024! Still one of my faves. 😊 ❤
vastly underrated track....
I saw DS in concert in the spring of 1992 and I was pissed that they didn't play it live.
Ah yes, another great track from a truly great band. I find that keyboard tune running through my head at odd times. I was away in France missing all the storms that battered Britain it was more like July than October, and there was this tune in my head while I was working in the garden in the hot sun, just had to play once I got back home.
You know that's true!
luv this very catchy.i remember dancing, not ,around me bedroom listening to it on vinyl brilliant.
Absolutely.....correct,its lived with me as go to happy track 😁
This song deserves way more views.
This song was 38 years ahead of it's time. Perfect for 2020.
And counting!!! ;-)
It was perfect for its time. Things just haven't changed.
@@Saladmints yep you are right!
somewhere in the corridor, someone was heard to sneeze - goodness me, could this be industrial disease!
@@gregslow1 "Two men say they´re Jesus, one of them must be wrong" I use it sooo frequently!!!
Only dire straits fans know about this gem nowadays, I like the fact that it doesn't have a repeated chorus and it really works, I also really like the layered guitars, they're hard to hear because of how it has been mixed but not impossible to hear... man that riffing in his trademark fingerstyle is something else, especially when played live at sydney, too bad thats the only live recording we have, I wonder why it wasn't included in alchemy, even tho that tour was to support love over gold which that song was apart of...
Its finally been released on the newly remastered Alchemy from the live boxset .
The chorus is that incredible keyboard/organ riff
Terrific song by Dire Straits. I can’t understand why this tune didn’t get more attention it’s a catchy one. Why is this band still not doing awesome songs like this one?
Unhappily not continued. But Mark Knopfler continues with many goood. This one I have listen to 100 times and each time find it better. Is simply GENIAL!!
The band broke up
It upset the establishment
@Make America Great Again: Happily, where I lived (Raleigh, NC) it got tons of local radio air play.
Songs as good as this isn't that easy to come up with thats why!!! You try!! When and if you make it on the big charts let me know. Like AC/DC said in their own song it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll!!! Don't forget too that Mark Naplar lead singer of dierstraights is into his 60,s even todays young artist can't make outstanding songs like this.🤪
"Two say they're jesus one of them must be wrong" LOL love it !
Knopfler can turn a phrase like few others in music. This song is epically funny if you listen to the lyrics. I think I worked at this factory when I was in college.
"One of them must be wrong."
One of them is wrong ,its the one who got the industrial disease LMAO
Both are wrong tho. Jesus didn't come back yet. Read Revelation Chapter 19 and John Chapter 14
eye roll
I have next to zero artistic talent. It amazes me all the bits and pieces that come together with the instruments and the lyrics to create a song like this.
My favourite Dire Straits song! Has been for years and years
Agreed #1
Man you sparked a Police song there!
he knows when a song doesn't need lead guitar
Just a killer damn song that takes me straight back to the early 80's........I miss my music & my youth!!
Damn that is the most beautiful keyboard riff in rock. I can't think of any piano I love more, not even Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Hornsby.
he knows EXACTLY how to use a Hammond V3 Organ :D
Absolutely. Plus Steve Winwood, in his 6th decade of playing the Hammond B3 (in addition to sundry other things).
+yu stu I don't know about "most beautiful" but that is certainly the most DISTINCTIVE organ, or other keyboard, riff I know. It's something of an earworm actually; I sometimes hear it playing in my head repeatedly throughout the day and have to go listen to this song...
thanks for bringing me back. I wonder what inspired that organ riff and to intersperse that beautiful piano. this song is way better than money for nothing or sultans of swing
As an airplane builder this hits close to home. What an anthem!
Mark really is a lyrical genius. That gets bandied around too often but he's definitely one of them.
Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong. Always loved this line.
He really is a lyrical genius, and has a distinct style with the phrasing, too. There's a reason he and Bob Dylan got along. And this track is my fave of them all.
Decent guitar player too! (Understate)
You ain't lying.
@J Hemphill John Hiatt deserves to be in that group as well. Maybe Delbert McClinton too.
knoplfer what a writer , amazing lyrics
Next patients please, sent me a nother victim of industrial Disease
@@grokur9714 Two men say that they are Jesus, One of them must be wrong...............

@@grokur9714 If Knopfler wrote this today the religious right would crucify him for the satire. I think it's some of the best lyrics that he has ever written. It's brilliant social-political satire.
Knoplfer
30 yrs automotive factory know a lot about this song
Mark is a lyric and musical f***ing genius ! ☺👌👍💖
Look young people. This is proper music with loads of talent . Not like these muppets today . Real music.
Yup.. Harmony Snazzy..and has a Theme..
There's plenty of absolutely fantastic music being produced today, you just can't get over your sentimentality.
Absolutely classic lyrics.. even more relevant today 👍🏾
IT disease
I am convinced that I had an internship here in college. I have a political philosophy minor.
I'm obsessed with the sound of that synthesizer
It's almost the Dire Straits trademark.
Such a happy 60's keyboard riff and twisted 80's lyrics. Look how much fun they seemed to have while filming this
One of their very best. Quite underrated like Skateaway. Damn fine playing.
I remember my dad got this album well before it was released to the public. He used to work in the industry. I was listening to this before all my dire straits crazy friends. Always loved this album and this song.
One of the best keyboard riffs of all time.
Mark certainly has been blessed by the gods - he's incredibly talented, lovable and very cute to look at - 65 now and still listen to his voice every day of the week - 35 years of devotion.
Oh ya, you got a love his Irish in him he can be so dam funny!!! He once spoke in public to make every one giggle and we all did! He said this: ah at first you pissed me off just a weee little bit but now your doing ah fine job at it laddie! LOL😂🤣🤣😄
2020 - "Everybody knows it's the Industrial Disease"
And I found my people
Change it to Political Disease.

Brilliant song, the lyrics are incredible and have been relevant since before they were written! But one thing I notice eveytime I listen to this.. When you get a vocal group, you admire them when the differnet voices fit together well, when they're layering different words or notes. This song, more so than most, does this with every instrument. They aren't just playing along with the main tune. They're all playing their own individual track.. and they all mesh so damn well.
absolutely fabulous: funny satirical and perceptive
Love Over Gold album was a real gem for Dire Straits
@@nicksterj 👍
One of the most perfect Dire Straits songs ever. Has it all and would have been at home on any of their albums.
This brilliant song is like a time machine!
Love Over Gold a masterpiece and one of the most underrated albums ever!
Very cool tune indeed, great guitar and keyboard work and a great beat to boot!!
I enjoy songs well written and filled with all types of lyrics. Also, Dire Straits definitely had their own sound. 62
and still rockin'..
A lot of TRUTH in this song!
The keyboard player is a natural genius. His playing on two stands is effortless.
Reminds me of Dennis Young of Styx.
Gregg Guiffria and Geddy Lee were also virtuosos.
Alan Clark.
Ray
In this video he's miming though and gets it visibly wrong at 2:37.
Maybe one of the best synthesizer riffs of all time
If you mean the Freddy Cannon song, It has a vaguely similar sound. I wonder if it inspired the Dire Straits keyboard sound of this song, because there's a kind of similar 'circus' idea in both songs, as if "Industrial Disease" might be giving a wink and a nod to "Palisades Park" at a certain level.
....which was written by Chuck Barris, Mr. Gong Show.......
For a guitar sound band, great to see they had some diversity with the keyboard. One of the songs that not having repeating verses actually works.
Sly lyrics....love it. Best of the 80s by far.
Well, to be fair, there was a LOT of cheese in the 80s. This wasn't a hit (at least in the U.S. it wasn't), and probably not meant to represent the 'vacuous argument', LOL! But there certainly was a TON of great music from that era. People just need to look past the pop music & hair metal to see it.
It wasn't a hit in the UK either but as far as I'm aware it was never released as a single here,it cropped up on the radio now and again though as too good a song to keep down.
you fuckin kiddin me? lol, this polished no redeeming valu bleached out bullshit droll was just radio chatter to keep the braindead tuned in between commercials, knoppfler is 100Xs better solo, fuckiin zombies...... i came to fight and chew gum, all outta gum bitches
stand4ever WTF is WRONG WITH YOU ?
Crikey.. Over the years this song been forgot.. Its an awesome tune.
I remember watching this on Saturday night live I was 12 years old. I thought it was one of the coolest songs ever written, and I still do .them Geordie boys sure know how to write music. Just think of all the great musicians that came out of that town and he’s definitely up there.
The transition from the distorted guitar to the synth line at the beginning is just heavenly! :)
So much wisdom and prescience in these "old" songs. We had plenty of warning. Not only that, they just freaking ROCK.
My favorite Dire Straits song.....Fucking Awesome. ...they had a lot of great songs though.....love them also.
What a song Industrial Disease. . I rem getting Love over Gold Album Telegraph road had something that you didnt want it to end.
What a rocking tune
This is soo cooooool mark is a genius
Pure genius!
One of my favourite Dire Straits songs🕺🏼
One of their best songs! I really miss these guys.
It was so sad when bands were forced to play in playback on TV. Imagine if they had played live, what a great version we would have enjoyed today.
Being a major Dire Straits fan faded in the end of the 1980ies for me...., but around 1984 they were one of my favourite bands (my first live concert attented in 1983) - this song was one I really liked! German TV by the way here.
Fantastic "squeeze in those lyrics" on the second verse.
Damn where has the last 38 years gone ,
First heard this tune in the nut house Winter of 82'
It always stuck in my head !
Cool how Mark plays guitar. This is my all time favorite Dire Straits tune.
Word, me too
One of my favorite Dire Straits dittys. Though there are many I could name now, this was the fist song I remember hearing in which all the lyrics are spoken. Not a single note sung.
John Michael Strubhart
really?
For another example,...Lou Reed.
Master peice!
Classic tune that will never get old!
Can't get enough of Industrial Disease!
CoViD-19: Hold my Corona
One of the best songs, from one of the best albums, from one of the best bands ever. Still brilliant - thank you.
Absolutely my all-time favorite Dire Straits track.
Great song where Knopfler takes a bit of a back seat.
how prophetic are lese words today
Whole band was good. I gotta say Knophler one the smoothest I've ever heard. Once saw him do a 4 min. solo awesome
What a great tune from those years. Remember it well.
The best song from the best album of Dire Straits!!!
Best guitarist in the world
Splendid. My absolute favorite Dire Straights song!
Two men say their Jesus, one of them must be wrong! You've got to love this song, there'd be something wrong with you if you didn't, one of their best from a long list of great songs!
Somewhere in the corridor there was a cough and sneeze; goodness me, could it be we've all now got Covid disease. The caretaker was crucified, and he cross about it, but he rose to the occasion when his union got him re-instated three days later. Dr Parkinson declared "I'm now a consultant, so I've upped my fees and although I now have brewer's droop, I've avoided Industrial Disease". Splendid
My favourite dire straits song. Likely my favorite all time. I was 16 at the time
IMO, one of the most under-rated guitarists ever. Very under-rated band as well. I can only imagine the response of songs like Twisting By the Pool would be this band was just starting out and looking for that big first single.
Underrated? Have you heared of sultans if swing or money for nothing two of the most iconic songs ever
Love the lyrics and keyboards in this .
A masterpiece.
Yes, it could have been on tv yesterday!!!😁
....1982, what a year for this Rocker girl, this song debuted on a station I used to listen to and this SONG BLEW MY EARS AND MIND!! *4VERFANDIRESTRAITS*
Great song from a great band
Mark rocks on all his songs
I love the bit where he imitates the doctor, always makes me chuckle :D
Easily my favorite Dire Straits song.
Best line of this song "Two men say their Jesus, one of them must be wrong."
Welcome back to the soundtrack of 2020 a pandemic an industrial disease!
I've never ever seen this footage before!
Very rare. Many thanks for this awesome upload. 👍👍❤️
Unbelievably cool. Way back when, Man what an awesome tune!
I love this song; I wish it got more love from the fans, like "Money For Nothing" or "Walk of Life" always do. 😎
I'm a big fan of all of their albums, but 'Iron Hand' from "On Every Street" is my favorite song.
"Telegraph Road" is probably my all-time favorite, but "Iron Hand" is a damn good song.
I love this band, but Walk of Life & Twisting by the pool are over rated, over played and way boring compared to pretty much everything else they ever did.
Money for nothing and walk of life are no where near as good as most of their other songs, in my opinion.
crazyman8472 I agree
They nail the playback, love it!
God bless UA-cam for letting me listen to this.
Love the fancy footwork by the bass player at the start.
Happy Birthday today(March 5) to keyboardist Alan Clark. Cheers!
So catchy this song, I love it
This song was a huge hit in Canada and almost no where else. Damn even in musical taste we're awesome!!!
Yeah I remember hearing it all the time on the radio. Did they play it live?
Brilliant song! Why haven't we heard more of it over the decades?
Great song!
Classic Dire Straits tune
