      @@NotALot-xm6gz Seconded. Personal account.
I was on single track road, and heard a Police car coming up behind on blues and 2s. I took to a passing place on my RHS and stayed there with RH indicator on and brakes applied whilst they passed. I then checked mirrors (centre and LEFT) to see a second Police car coming up and stayed put. I checked mirrors (centre and LEFT again) and stayed put for an ambulance before changing signal and moving off.

8:42 this is a great example of what those 'cycle lane' markings are designed to do: keep stationary traffic away from the kerb to allow cyclists to filter past.
You can see in the rear view, when traffic is moving, the Audi is straddling the cycle lane markings, but when things slow down, they do move out of it a bit. You should never cycle in these lanes when traffic is moving, but once traffic has stopped, they can be very useful.
Drivers should always check for filtering cyclists before setting off, but even more so when there are cycle lane markings like these. Nice to see a driver who gets it (it's smilerbob, isn't it?!).

    • @smilerbob

Am I that recognisable now? Think it is time to change the car 😁
Agree that these lanes are not good for many reasons when everything is flowing, there is a video I made of this exact same cycle lane highlighting some of the problems. But with everything stationary they create the perfect opportunity for cyclists to filter safely away fron oncoming vehicles, as long as drivers don’t attempt to move off as one is coming passed

I drive round a retro fitted light controlled roundabout almost everyday. Some destinations inc mine have multiple lanes going the same way….eventually they merge in turn after the roundabout.
Always avoid getting along side. Always look for people “moving around a bit in the lane”-usually an indicator of them about to swap lanes suddenly….sometimes w/out signalling.
Some people treat it like a race track….zigzagging at speed between everyone else.

For the clip at 9:53, in France we usually have the inverse culture, which is blocking cars from overtaking buses at bus stops (ingrained in culture so much that infrastructure at bus stops sometimes completely forbids overtaking). Here, it is considered safer because peds might be crossing and be invisible in front of buses, though it is discouraged and taught from a young age to wait for the bus to leave before crossing.
Just sharing because I find it quite interesting some of the differences in road security. Similar example seen in other of your videos, for us it's just a normal rule that pedestrians have priority at crossings at exits of roundabouts, whereas for you it's a new rule and people find it scary / unsecure.

I think that what M. Neal is getting at is whether, like in the U.K., it is allowed to proceed over the line and wait in the junction as long as the exit itself is clear and the only obstruction is the oncoming traffic. In the U.K. the cammer could have waited in the junction for the red, and completed the left turn at that time, ahead of the lorry. Yes, this merely makes the lorry the problem of the following left-turning vehicle. (-: But it would have solved the problem at hand. With right-on-red being a possibility, red meaning unequivocally halt in the U.K., flashing or no, the state that the video is showing might not be like the U.K. in this respect.

  • @smilerbob

It appears a few questions and comments have been made on a couple of clips where Ashley is unusually quiet (or maybe that is just the device I am using to view the video)
At 5:45, yes I did use my hazard lights but no amount of positioning will stop drivers from overtaking. As with most places in the UK observations are poor along this road and I have seen drivers overtake stationary vehicles into the path of blue light drivers 🤦‍♂️ The vehicle that did run over the pipe shows the danger that debris can pose to a vulnerable road user like a motorcycle rider, cyclist or even a pedestrian on the pavement if that flicks up abd hits them
The last clip at 10:35, I only continued after the ambulance passed as the crossing was active and I knew there would be bo conflict with vehicles on the road. If the crossing didn’t become active I would’ve stayed where I was, or reversed a little and shifted slightly left, but this still does make it more difficult for larger vehicles turning right which is why I continued to prevent that difficulty

  • @kenbrown2808
    @kenbrown2808 2 дні тому +2

in your first clip: the flashing amber filter arrow means you MAY turn but you don't have priority. it's a nice addition to traffic signals that have a filter arrow for the turn lane. some may also have a solid green with a sign saying to the effect of "turn must yield on solid green"
it looked like the viewer was hoping oncoming traffic would have the courtesy to stop promptly at the yellow, and they didn't. then chose to reverse rather than push through as it turned red.
also, that isn't normal traffic for that intersection - if an intersection does have semis making a turn like that on a regular basis, they will have the lines painted to accommodate it.

For learner drivers-don’t focus on the tarmac in front of the car…..you need to look up and side to side. So you can see cars approaching from side roads, from around the roundabout etc. not only is this safer, but you can then time your slowing down & you might be able to slot in after the other vehicle without even stopping….you even save a splash of fuel….and I can tell you…they add up….it affects my daily average mpg if I have to stop a few times v not having to stop at all.

00:36 I was so shocked and so surprised recently when I watched a UA-cam video of a mock test here in the uk and I saw a steady amber arrow traffic light and a flashing amber traffic light, I did a bit of research about it and it means the same thing as in other countries, a steady amber arrow means the traffic lights are about to change to red or green, a flashing amber arrow means you can proceed in the direction of the arrow but you must give way to any vehicles coming through on the adjoining road.

Stop lines in the US usually are set way, way back - often to the point of being absurd and ignored at stop signs because you can't possibly see anything. In this case, though, most vehicles which would use that junction won't need the extra space - a bus, fixed chassis truck, or a 'semi' (artic) with a more normal trailer ought to make it round fine.
Well done indeed for seeing that and making space rather than making an issue of 'MY LANE!!!' like many.

  • @timothyjohnston4083
    @timothyjohnston4083 2 дні тому

@0:25 At some intersections in North America, the stop line would be further back especially if the cross street is smaller.
A flashing amber (yellow) light simply means you may proceed with caution, yield to on-coming traffic. As you can see, on-coming traffic is still going through. A green arrow would mean you have the right-of-way. (Although it is prudent to double-check that other traffic has indeed stopped before proceeding.)
Where I live (in the province of Quebec in Canada), a flashing green light means that you have the right-of-way to make any legal movements through an intersection -- right-turn, left-turn or straight on.
@1:40 Perhaps the private hire taxi was using their hazard lights to warn drivers behind ? Technically, they didn't have to stop as it was the crane-driver who needed to yield; but they were being kind to allow the crane driver to make his turn.
@7:24 When I see a cyclist coming along on the opposite shoulder and there is traffic coming up behind them, if it is safe to do so, I will move over slightly onto my shoulder to allow the oncoming traffic adequate space to safely overtake the cyclist. By law here, we need to give 1.5 to 2m clearance (depending on speed) when overtaking a cyclist. To be on the safer side, I try to give at least 2 m. If I can't, I slow right down to under 50km/h.

0:42 In this sort of situation, the cammer would have taken a space in the middle of the intersection and cleared once the light turned red and cross traffic was clear. This was filmed in Washington so I'm not sure on the rules there, but in California, learners are taught to enter the intersection and wait until it's clear to go. Though in this particular instance it doesn't make much difference because there is no one behind.

On a vastly smaller scale, my neighbouring town has a little painted roundabout retro fitted into an old fashioned junction in town. It’s like a right-angle from each direction. Buses can’t do it w/out going over on the other side the road.
The traffic therefore must hold back to allow turning space.

In the first clip that is a very uncommon scenario where you would have an oversize load turning there. I don't think you would have vehicles that long turning there for 99% of the time so for that 1% of scenarios I don't think it would be worth moving any of the stop lines at the junction and just let people sort it if and when it happens. Most drivers would have this sort of cop on that if they seen an oversized extra long vehicle like that trying to turn then they would move. The haulage company should also maybe do a bit better at planning a route for an oversized vehicle but of course there may be certain areas they have no choice but go through.

You can see this due to the taxi trying to slide over on departure of 4x4.

6:00 - the obstruction and hazard on the road is now a hazard and obstruction on the pavement. at least tuck it to the side.

Thank you and this has been noted elsewhere 👍
From where I was it appeared to fall differently to what it and I will be more careful in the future to double check I haven’t made a bad situation worse for others

One of those things is a higher and more dangerous priority than the other, and has a more time sensitive approach especially as traffic was building up.
I think what you meant to say was "good job reducing danger for everyone, at least now no one will die in a crash."

@@fromthegamethrone I disagree with the idea that the road is higher priority than the pavement.
A disabled, old, or visually impaired pedestrian would be significantly inconvenienced or endangered by a low-visibility trip hazard like this across the pavement.

@@zackaplowitz that's a very selfish point of view.
If a disabled person trips and falls, perhaps even passes away, that's awful, I agree.
If a car crashes and kills multiple people, that's a tragedy.
One of these is more dangerous than the other by a considerable margin, and should be prioritised as such.
      The needs of the many.
In the ideal world, yes, it should have been disposed of properly - but this person did the right thing by minimising risk quickly.

There should be a requirement to pass the Advanced Driving Test no later than 5 years after passing your Normal Driving Test.
If you don’t pass the ADT by that time, you lose your Full Licence and have to pass that again too.
That would help reduce bad habits, reduce high insurance charges, and provide more work for driving tutors like you 👍🏼

Should just make it advanced from the outset then, why wait 5 years for shit habits to kick in, also compulsary retesting with a ban until you have passed the resit, plus eyesight tests to get insurance for all drivers.
Forcing manufacturers to remove media screens from dashboards and bigger fines/instant bans for phone/distracted driving offences seeing how many people get killed or seriously injured outweighs even drunk/drugged driving.

If it was an Advanced test from the outset, bad habits could still kick in after 5 years, so I’m thinking 5 years, and maybe every 5 years thereafter to take another driving test.

Surely the driver at 2:55 needed to give way anyway; I can understand the need for the bikers to look after themselves better in-case she didn't stop, but it would've been her fault if they collided, no?

4:40 Taking sides isn't very nice driving nor nice driving. It's poor because it encourages conflict. Carry on as normal. if the vehicle in lane 2 tries to merge in front, that's the time to make space.

    • @tonyfranklin8306
      @tonyfranklin8306 День тому

That just created conflict and potential repercussions, also the van crept into the right turn lane, now thinks it's ok to bully their way through instead of just slowing and filtering in behind someone.
Neal shouldn't be encouraging this because they didn't make this a non event, rather just aided the impatient wanker who wasn't going anywhere until the cammer intervened for no reason as it was clear the van driver would have had to bail.

    • @smilerbob

The road itself is two straight on lanes through four sets of lights until after the last set of lights when the right lane becomes a right turn only. No bullying just two extremely stubborn rod users fighting for tarmac they don’t own
I would much rather separate them than have them continue the fight behind me. No sides being taken, no favouritism being shown, just simple defusing of the situation so we can all continue our journey safely

@@smilerbobYou could have achieved this without antagonising the driver behind you and risking conflict. Ashley appreciates this risk yet, disappointingly, encourages people to do it.
