Love how you broke down and analyzed your own video. That could be very confronting alone. But to do it online for all to see. I am impressed and admire you! I’m also an English major so I love breaking things down and really diving in. I would subscribe again if I wasn’t already lol. 👑👏🎉
I love that you talk about what too much water means. I see allot of people get confused by this. Also as someone that has been in the hobby for 20 plus years...things still happen. I haven't killed a plant to over watering in a few years but it hasn't been so long that I think I am above it! LOL Thanks for this video, always learn from you. I had no idea if a plant was kept in water it may do okay in other lightening. Gonna play with this!
I just went through all of this with my Philodendron Brasil! All the pieces I managed to salvage and stick in water just finished growing a large enough root system for soil last week. It went from a 10-inch pot at Walmart to a little 4-inch pot currently 😂 but I’m just glad I still have the plant!
The smell of dirt baking is one of my favorite things my grandpa did! 😍 Stinky, but a good memory when starting our garden indoors from seed when I was little!
I’m new to caring for plants and I learned a lot from this video, especially because I’m dealing with my first case of root rot. I felt I should leave it in water to rest and regrow it’s root system but was about to repot it anyway until I heard what you said (was listening while I was preparing my soil haha). Thanks so much. Also humble if you to point out where you could have explained better. 👍🏾
3:18 As a native spanish speaker who likes watch english videos about plants I must say: thank you so much! I was so scared about over watering my 3 plants (I'm new in this field :B). I recently transplanted one plant and I made another one with cuttings that I propagate in water (the mix: 50% peat moss, 30% coco coir, 15% worm cast and 5% perlite) and I freaked out one night because I put my finger in the soil and it was still veeery wet (I watered them in the morning) and I slept horribly thinking: this is it, I killed them :/ So I bought perlite the next day and I re repoted them (again) with more perlite on the mix this time. Idk if what I did was good but I sleep better now (lol) and it's been a week and both plants are still alive :B
I was told that if your Pothos leaves fall off, you can still propagate the stems. It is true, since I did it with my Golden Pothos. Took awhile, but new leaves did grow. 😎
:) Pothos are awesome! Very informative! 2 Thumbs up! I have had root rot, & I was extremely careful with my plants before & I felt like humiliated by a starter plant that not only rotted but also gave 3 of my Fiddle leaf figs a bug. The audacity! After I calmed down, way after I took the nasty plant outside & threw her away, I realized this was a good thing....(not great but good to learn about the rot & move on!) I gave it a closure & now know how to carry on, not muttering to myself in the dollarstore but calm as Eminem after his hyper druggie stint. Have a great week Becca! :)
Great video Becca! Love the concept of 'editing'. We are all constantly learning, and such a great idea to help clarify some phrases! Your content is always so informative💚 Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! 🦋🌿💚🙌
I've killed an 8" cebu blue by over watering. Thankfully it was full and had a few longer vines, so I was able to chop and prop. I now have a 4" cebu blue lol. I've even bought a root rot pearls and jade from the clearance section just for the vines since I had successfully salvaged the cebu blue. I find it kind of ironic that the best way for a plant to rebound from root rot is to re-root in water. Plants are wild 🤪
Hi Becca, I remember that very video, lol, you have come a long way since then, and I am one of those people that has been growing plants for over 20 years, and I am still learning new things every day, because when I first started I did over water some of my plants as I was learning, but some of those plants survived and are over 20 years old, I love listening to all of the suggestions I get, and I remember the fungus gnats and they were so much of a bother and now I know how to eliminate them so much better now than when I first started growing plants. Thanks so much Becca, love your channel. Love you girl, give Leo a big hug say hi to Daniel, have a great day, bye for now.
I bought a Philo lemon lime two days ago. Noticed it was unstable. Some of the stems and roots were rotting😱 I needed this video. Thanks. Could save most of the plant and the stems have lots of roots that are fine. They are now in water. Hopeful. I really need it to survive 😁
I just found grey mold on the soil of my aglaoenma plant, should I repot or try the cinnamon? or copper fungacide? I now know that I've already "repotted" my new plants in too big of pots based on what you're saying at that 1250 mark or around there, it TOTALLY makes sense! I guess it was hard for me to wrap my head around a biggish plant being in a small pot, i guess this will come with experience! I'm loving being a plant mama tho and want to really grow and learn along with my plants. I live in SW florida so its a good humid area and warm/hot all year. Thank you for all your great, informative and entertaining vids!
Hello Becca... 🍃🐞🌿🌞🌱😘 Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Definitely loving this new series. At the start of the Winter, I lost my very first Anthurium due to watering too "much" too often. I was told, you over watered it, I kept thinking ... what does over watering really mean? This makes more sense to me now!!!
Thank you for your input, I do still struggle with mold in my plant pots. I need to repot EVERY plant because I ignored it for too long and it spread :/ I had to learn that in winter, I can't saturate the pots. Even if I don't water for a month and then saturate the whole pot, it will get mold because it won't dry out for like two months. I made that mistake multiple times because plant people on the internet always tell you to saturate the pot, but when it turned fall I had mold growing in multiple pots, even when I only watered once in two weeks. In summer however, it's a whole diffenent scenario. In Summer I have to check my plants often because they dry out immensly fast. I've now got a moisture meter to help me gauge if a plant really needs water, because when I don't water for two months like my dracena dorado in that dark corner which is still growing leaves in the middle of winter for some insane reason, I feel bad because it feels like neglecting the plant. But no, my Dracena Dorado doesn't like that much water. Also, my taller Yucca and Croton plant really aren't that thirsty this time of year. All of those are in larger pots because they are large plant, but that said I don't have any additives in those pots because I've had those plants for a long time and I've just recently learned about all those things. For smaller plants in smaller pots, the whole saturating spiel works for me.
now that I'vw seen the whole episode, it might be that some of my plants are in too big of a pot. I've had the tendency to do that, but I haven't come around to repot everyone. Will definitely choose a pot based on root size, not plant size.
I use plastic orchid pots for almost all my plants, for more air circulation to the root system, and a soil mix made for aroids, fast draining and no peat. I have to water more, but I can do it without worry too much about root rot.
Great idea going back to a previous video and getting more info. Loved the idea its still alive and in with water. Gotta question if a scindaptus pictus I have water rooted, what type of soil would be good for that as the mother plant is in mostly soft coco peat? I will check out any of your soil videos too. Great job lovethe earrings on you💚👍
Thank you so much! I’d say it should be fine in the same soil as the mother plant. I use a coarse mix of cactus soil, pumice and orchid bark for 90% of my plants! So whatever works for you!
Air circulation with a fan as well as air purifiers are great preventatives against mold and fungal issues in humid environments. Jane Perrone also did a great podcast discussing yellow mushrooms growing in soil, which does not hurt plants even though it is fungal.
Hi Becca! How are you? Thanks again for educating me again. Love the way you teach. How are your Fungus Gnat problem doing? I thought if you this week. Just noticed my new Cordyline has them. I have been treating it, so hopefully soon they will be gone. Hope you have a good day, Gerry 😎
Hi Becca and plant friends! I need some help! I recently planted a Tradescantia Nanouk cutting in moist soil, and put the pot in a plastic bag for a week. According to a video online, that creates a mini greenhouse. It's been in my west-facing window sill, but I live in San Francisco so it's been consistently cloudy. I took it out when I noticed mold on top of the soil. I recently made a hydrogen-peroxide/water (1:9) spray (suggested by another video), and I've sprayed the topsoil for two days now. I believe my Nanouk has just started to root, so I'm not sure if the spray will do enough to if I should change out the soil. Thanks! P.S. I really appreciate going back to old videos to re-examine, Becca! Best way to show growth!
I love this!! What about a title saying taking a step back in time or something. Being able to “time travel” to the past and revise the videos in the ways you want. Hmm I’m bad with wording but this is a cool concept
How about fungus on the bottom of the pot? I can see white fuzzy spots that was identified as fungus. What causes that and what can I do? Plant was purchased from Lowe’s not long ago and is still in the same soil and pot.
Thanks so much for the vid! What liquid fertilizer do you use for your pothos? Moved recently and my plant's been a bit unhappy, ended up switching some to water
I just got root rot on one of my beautiful variegated dracaena's. It's my favorite one too. It has 2 in the pot, now it has one. The roots were just gone on the other one and even the black spread up the stem. But I cut it above that and stuck it in a glass of water to root it. We'll see how it goes! Root rot isn't fun to deal with. 😭
Kristie Bihm Nice to hear your first dracena survived! I did the same now with my Philodendron Strawberry Shake because it was very expensive and i don‘t want to wait and potentially have the rot go up into the stem and lose the whole plant😥 now i‘m just re-rooting the cutting i took from the top
I just had this happen with my yucca tree and my silver satin . I cut up the bad roots and was told to put them in water with cinnamon. Not sure how long but they’re there. 😌
I love this series ☺️. Question 🙋♀️ Since you spoke about watering, I've been wondering how to water my plants in the tub. If I remember correctly, you do this too. So....out of curiosity, doesn't dirt get in the tub and then goes down the drain? Is that bad? Or, do you have like a soil catcher or something? I water some of my plants in the sink and then wipe up whatever dirt I can out of the sink b/c I don't know if it should go down the drain. Would love to know to save me a lot of time 🙏
I don’t have a ton of soil spillage in the tub, but if I do it’s small pieces so I just let it go down the drain 🤷🏻♀️ haven’t had any issues as of yet!
Really good explanation of root rot and how to avoid it. Biggest takeaway was your caution of using a pot size based on the foliage instead of the root ball. I have made that mistake too many times. Underpotting a plant is way easier to correct that overpotting one. As always, thanks for sharing your tips!
Hello! I have a buuuuunch of yellow fungus in my elephant ear plant. I know its not harmful but it seems like too much. Would the cinnamon help with this? How much do I use and does it burn my plant at all?
I've watched your first video and did what you said 😆 except I used a smaller pot. I just repotted my marble queen due to root rot, should I water it or leave it a day or two??
My dragon tree was giving out dry yellow tips so I repotted it. BUT 😭 the root was about a size of my fist and the pit is like 7inches tall and and 5-6 inch in diameter. Please tell me it'll survive?
Are there any other plants besides pothos that you've had a positive experience of letting it live in water full time? Also what's the longest amount of time that it took for you to root a plant in water?
Syngonium and tradescantia, heart shaped philodendron, Brazil, also do great in water full time! I also have a hoya cutting that has been in water for a few months very happily. Sometimes it takes up to a month to see root growth but once they get started, it grows rather quick!
Hello! Please help. I have a very large monstera and the roots have completely rotted. I've cut the roots off and parts of the aerial roots and the bottom part of the stem, it's now in a fresh pot with fresh soil with a small amount of rooting powder. Is this the right thing to do or should I have let it hang out in water for a bit? Thank you!
I’d just say monitor it in the soil since you’ve already done that! It really depends on how much root was left after you removed the rot. Usually if it’s not a majority of the roots saved, I would put it in water for a bit to recover.
Hey Becca (or anyone that knows he answer) I noticed that your Satin Pothos’ leaves are curled. Mine is doing the same thing, and I’m not sure why. Is it just thirsty?
How about "Rewind" as a series name? Or "ReVine", if that's the correct use of the term? To re-post, in other words. I've embarked on my own root-rot saga, which took a while to solve. Basically, it originates from the big box stores I'm purchasing from. They come from high, indirect light, greenhouses, to my medium/low-light house. In a couple of cases, I knew the specimens in the sized pots, had more than an inch of soil around them. Which I learned the hard way (in my house) leads to root rot. In a greenhouse, with all that light, I'm sure the plant would have no issues filling out the pot, quickly. But in my lower light situation, it just left the soil wet for too long. And this was watering every 3-4 weeks, during summer. I took those specimens down to a smaller pot size, so the roots are more pot-bound. Meaning less soil for water to saturate. They are finally growing like normal plants. It had me stumped for a while though. I couldn't figure out, why my plants were exhibiting signs of over-watering, when I was keeping to a regime more suitable to winter watering, than summer. It all came down to the distributors pot-size, for a greenhouse. Not what plants needed in my house.
Aveline De Grandpré Micronutrients can’t be killed, as they are not alive :) I did wonder about the potential for killing beneficial microorganisms, though; perhaps that is what you meant? At any rate, I found this article that addresses it: homeguides.sfgate.com/sterilizing-soil-kill-microorganisms-72135.html Maybe it will answer your question.
Have you sterilised orchid bark / pumice using your recipe card? I need to check some large plants with potential root rot and really don't want to waste all the new media I purchased to repot them 😭😭😭
Much can be too much liters with a very large pot or a closed one. I 've got an M deliciosa in a very large pot and have to be very carefull So not too often and not too much at once. I stuck a couple of aerial roots in a big glass waterbottle near the pot. Lots of roots and the plant seems to like it and with a light behind the bottle is looks great too
Watched this at least 5x. My marble queen pothos got root rot. I was loving it too hard apparently. I tried putting it in fresh soil. That didn’t work. I took it out, took it apart and put it in water. It’s looking ok. I’ve had to pull it out and take off the left behind rotted roots. How long should I leave it in water before putting it back in soil? The root system is looking ok but I feel I should leave it alone to regrow roots. Any tips???
Hi Becca! I'm so sad, I noticed today that every one of my plants that i have watered this week have the white mold on the top soil! I'm going to scrape off what i can and use the cinnamon tip you shared, but i wondered, is this mold dangerous to us humans?? I have small children and have been panicking at the thought of them breathing in dangerous mold 😭
My understanding is that water sitting in soil displaces the oxygen. You need soil that drains and leaves room for oxygen. I have my own compost bin and definitely see this if it is too wet or compacted...it starts to smell of ammonia and I know I have to get some oxygen in there. It needs to be aerobic not anaerobic, that is, it needs oxygen. Root rot is anaerobic, no oxygen. Fresh water has disolved oxygen that the plant can take up. If you leave the plant in water that is old, eventually it will root too. Plants need oxygen. Hope that makes sense.
I know this is a older video and you might not see this but what about a plant that lost all it's leaves, will putting it in water help it or is it to late to get new roots and leaves ? Help from anyone who would know is appreciated. Thank you
Hmm I think it depends on the plant, but they should regrow leaves. Maybe try giving it a boost in humidity (makeshift greenhouse) and see what happens.
I am having the same problem with my climing fig/ficus pumila, don't know the exact plant type. It got root rot and is now struggling to regrow leaves and enhance root system.
What happens when mold grows on the roots of your "in water full time" plants? Every source about mold just discussed the soil well my problem is two of my cuttings i put in water have extensive mold all over the actual roots
I cant get my succulent or any cutting for that matter to take no matter what i do. Im trying to save what's left of my plants root rot but they just keep rotting after cutting. I believe im using a sterile cutter and rooting powder, i believe im cutting high enough. My soil hold water very very long im going to change that up as soon as i can. But im trying to save this succulent cutting and its just dying.
I heard that you can water a plant with some water mixed with rubbing alcohol to kill off root rot and dry out the plant. Not sure if that's true or not!
Interesting video, I am a serial overwaterer, sigh!! Oh you are a linguistics expert?!? Mmm could I possibly be contacting you in the future for some help on the planty series I am working on?!? Have a wonderful day!! ☺️

That’s very very true!! Thank you!
Hi Becca! How are you?
Thanks again for educating me again. Love the way you teach.
How are your Fungus Gnat problem doing? I thought if you this week. Just noticed my new Cordyline has them. I have been treating it, so hopefully soon they will be gone.
Hope you have a good day,
Gerry
😎
Hello there, I’m doing well! Thank you! :) thankfully the fungus gnats are on their way out - very happy about it!
@@BeccaDeLaPlants Yeah! BA BYE!

Hmmm the mold won’t hurt the plant! You can also sprinkle ground cinnamon to help with that. I don’t think you need to change the soil just yet.
New and improved. Thank you
This was great Becca!
Yayyy!! ☺️
I love this!! What about a title saying taking a step back in time or something. Being able to “time travel” to the past and revise the videos in the ways you want. Hmm I’m bad with wording but this is a cool concept
Oooh that’s a really great idea!! I can see lots of fun visuals coming from that 🤔☺️
That’s was helpful thank you so much for sharing that 🤍
How about fungus on the bottom of the pot? I can see white fuzzy spots that was identified as fungus. What causes that and what can I do? Plant was purchased from Lowe’s not long ago and is still in the same soil and pot.
Thanks so much for the vid! What liquid fertilizer do you use for your pothos? Moved recently and my plant's been a bit unhappy, ended up switching some to water
It was just some all purpose fertilizer from miracle grow I got from the garden center!
What a wonderful series and video!!
Thank you!! ☺️
Ugh it’s the worst!! Hopefully you caught it early enough 🤧
Did you save it?😯
@@alpina4115 I did! It has roots now! Unfortunately the other one came down with root rot a few days later and is now rooting in a glass also.
@@alpina4115 Good luck and have patience!❣🤞🤞
Love your content, Becca! 💕🌱
Thank you so much! ❤️
Thanks for the great nuggets. Take care
Do you recommend removing all the roots and putting the plant in water or in the ground for swedish ivy?
I just had this happen with my yucca tree and my silver satin . I cut up the bad roots and was told to put them in water with cinnamon. Not sure how long but they’re there. 😌
About how often were you watering your plant when it got root rot and how often do you now water it?
Thank you thank you thank you!!! This was super helpful
Thank you for the information! Hugs from Romania!
loved Ariel nodes!
😂👍🏼
@@BeccaDeLaPlants okee... thank you for the reply. I won't blame you if anything happens. heehee! I'll try and keep it clean
Great follow up video. 🙌🏼🌱
❤️❤️
Really good explanation of root rot and how to avoid it. Biggest takeaway was your caution of using a pot size based on the foliage instead of the root ball. I have made that mistake too many times. Underpotting a plant is way easier to correct that overpotting one. As always, thanks for sharing your tips!
Yess absolutely! I’ve made that mistake so many times 🙌🏼
Good video. Very simple you explain it.thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! This was very helpful!
I would say water it in!
We should wait to the soil is completely dry to watering again?
Love this! Great video!
Thinking a good name could be something like "Plant Time Rewind" !
It's got a nice ring to it(:
Oh great idea! :))
Get a waters check up to see how dry your water is I got one of them really helps
My dragon tree was giving out dry yellow tips so I repotted it. BUT 😭 the root was about a size of my fist and the pit is like 7inches tall and and 5-6 inch in diameter. Please tell me it'll survive?
we must prune the plant to the same size as the root?
Are there any other plants besides pothos that you've had a positive experience of letting it live in water full time?
Also what's the longest amount of time that it took for you to root a plant in water?
Syngonium and tradescantia, heart shaped philodendron, Brazil, also do great in water full time! I also have a hoya cutting that has been in water for a few months very happily. Sometimes it takes up to a month to see root growth but once they get started, it grows rather quick!
I also use water and vinegar on plants. It works well.
What fertilizer do you use for your pothos??
Thirsty probably :) that’s why mine was curly!
Can I repot it again? After I just repotted it?
Does “baking” the soil kill the micronutrients in the soil?
I am not certain but I would assume it doesn’t. Definitely worth looking further into!
I need to check some large plants with potential root rot and really don't want to waste all the new media I purchased to repot them 😭😭😭
I have sterilized my soil including all of the additives and nothing negative happened!
@@BeccaDeLaPlants Thank you for your swift reply! A lot of baking to do tomorrow 😭
Much can be too much liters with a very large pot or a closed one. I 've got an M deliciosa in a very large pot and have to be very carefull
So not too often and not too much at once. I stuck a couple of aerial roots in a big glass waterbottle near the pot. Lots of roots and the plant seems to like it and with a light behind the bottle is looks great too
That’s a great idea! :)
The Monstera is 8 years old and almost 2m. Since the waterbotlle, the lowest leaves rised up 10 cm. And the new leaves are bigger and more mature
Any tips???
my mom doesn't repot her pothos. Its always in water and ive been telling her that almost every root is already rotten and she wont believe me 😭😭😭
Oh man!! It’s not dangerous mold. If it’s black, that’s the bad kind. I had that worry too! You’re all good. Just sprinkle some cinnamon :)
I am so confused as to how a plant can get root rot from sitting in wet soil for too long but does not get root rot from sitting in water!?
Anna M i thought the same but it apparently has something to do with the presence of soil and the minerals and stuff in the soil
I can definitely answer this question in a future vid! Need to do some research 🤔
It’s because water has oxygen in it that goes to the roots. Soggy, overwatered soil prevents oxygen from getting to the roots.
I have pothos in fully in water and it still got root rot 😬 its def easier to see when root rot starts though
Thank you Becca 💚🙃
❤️☺️
I know this is a older video and you might not see this but what about a plant that lost all it's leaves, will putting it in water help it or is it to late to get new roots and leaves ? Help from anyone who would know is appreciated. Thank you
Hmm I think it depends on the plant, but they should regrow leaves. Maybe try giving it a boost in humidity (makeshift greenhouse) and see what happens.
@@BeccaDeLaPlants it's a rhaphidophora tetrasperma and all I have left is the steam. What about cutting it up and putting it in a prop box . Thank you
I am having the same problem with my climing fig/ficus pumila, don't know the exact plant type. It got root rot and is now struggling to regrow leaves and enhance root system.
What happens when mold grows on the roots of your "in water full time" plants? Every source about mold just discussed the soil well my problem is two of my cuttings i put in water have extensive mold all over the actual roots
I’d add a little peroxide to the water. Peroxide is a natural growth hormone too.
Great video!
Thank you! ❤️
I think the problem is probably your soil. Succulents need an airy mix!

I heard that you can water a plant with some water mixed with rubbing alcohol to kill off root rot and dry out the plant. Not sure if that's true or not!
I’ve heard that too!
My rubber tree has completely rotted. The stems are yellow brown going up to the leaves. One leaf is dead already (((
An you do a video on soaking root rot in H2o2?
is it ok to sanitize soil that has perlite and other additives already in it.
Yes
