I really love this kind of video! It's so cool to see, that even "famous" or big plant persons kill plants and that not every plant survives. In my view, it seems to be that every other person is keeping their plants alive and mine are all ... dead. So it's good to see that I'm not the only person struggeling!

Definitely!!! It’s hard to share these failures but I think it’s important to keep collecting realistic :)

We all grow, and shed things along the way! Even if we lose something, you continue to learn and grow! Being vulnerable about sharing the “hard” parts of losing plants is important, because even the best “growers” won’t be able to keep every plant alive forever!

"...but most of all [plants] teach us something about ourselves and the world around us." Amen to this! I feel like every child would benefit so much from growing plants. So many life lessons to be learned - not just about horticulture, responsibility, grieving, etc., but also from emulating the plants themselves: how to thrive in spite of setbacks, and how growing through adversity leads to grace and beauty.

I put my veitchii stick in a ziplock bag on its side and covered in damp moss. It’s a beautiful plant now. I also didn’t open it for 6 months. Loved the videos becca. We grow and learn. Big plant hugs from the U.K. 💚🌱

I'm sooo thankful you did this update and were so real about your plant journey. I bought an order of greenspace.id plants right around the time you did and had quite the ups and downs with them...I can't tell you the sense of relief I felt watching this video. I tried to be very realistic about what conditions I could offer the plants before purchasing and some still bit the dust. Thank you for your positivity about the hardships of plants and being honest! I was so sad initially when I was struggling with them but now that a few are thriving, I understand that we wouldn't gain such a sense of accomplishment with the ones that do well in our care if all of our plants did well without effort.

With the Mamei i would deffo lay it flat and when it roots make sure not to burry the stem, In nature the stem creeps above ground. If it’s buried it usually rots, which may be what happened to you originally :) They are also one of the less humidity tolerant plants in the Genus. Tip I learned to help with humidity when you don’t have a usable humidifier is to just literally leave little vases and cups with water around the plants.

    RIP Anthurium!
Here's some personal experience w/ Clarinervium if you'd like to have another go, cause I totally think it's worth it, and honestly that experience SHOCKED me:
Compared to other anthuriums, or pretty much any other tropical aroids, Clarinervium tolerates drought so much it's kinda beyond my comprehension. My big Clarinervium sat in a 10-inch slim-walled (which means extra water leeching) terracotta pot w/ a potting mix of bark, perlite, charcoal, and around 15%-20% peat moss. Watering had always been a huge headache because the mix is just way too airy to hold onto any water for more than a couple days. I kept going for several months before I just got too tired and stopped watering it completely for 6-7 weeks (I'm still feeling guilty). Then I noticed its leaves curling up a little bit, I thought it's gonna die, I pulled it out, and I saw the tuberous root system, which was already MASSIVE when arrived, had literally DOUBLED its mass despite the months-long drought. Then I started watering it again, and it pumped right back.
Concluding from the growth pattern of my several other Clarinervium cuttings, this thing is not necessarily drought-loving, but it's so willing to tolerate ANYTHING for an extremely airy and well-draining potting mix, even in full-bark-no-peat and constant under-watering it would still do ok. But if the potting mix a tad bit too wet? Nah it'll be gone in no time.

I love seeing them in others collections but I’m going to stick w/ my Micans which are as close to those gorgeous leaves as I’m going to get in my home. I LOVE your soil btw!

  • @Rayxster

After many experiments I can confidently say that the MAIN problems people tend to have with Melanochrysum is the humidity. The mature Melanos are more hardy, but when you get a young cutting/seedling, shove it into a humidity box/terrarium/glassdome with a growlight. When plants are that expensive I think it's worth going the extra mile to ensure that they thrive, we all know how much it hurts having spent a big buck on a plant we really wanted only for it to do die because it didn't thrive the way we had hoped.
Also Florida Ghost "mint" isn't a real thing, sellers slap "mint" onto anything to get more money from you. The "mint" is just a normal Florida Ghost that is turning green because of low light. Shove that sucker under a growlight and the newer leaves and growth turns a nice crispy white again.

Now I’m stirring clear of importing I tell myself with the cost of shipping, certificate and plants I might as well pay what they are charging in the states and get a plant I know I can work with and they have way less stress on them.

I think all the issues you had with the melanochrysum were humidity related. I had the same issue with the melano until I put it in a cabinet and the next leaf it put out was triple the size. I had a humidifier going but i guess it wasn’t cutting it. Stopped giving me trouble once it was getting 70%+.

If their growth stuck, maybe they need more light? And if their root rot, maybe u need media that more porous, that not keep water too long.
In my country, living moss is new trend media for many plants.
And just use plastic to keep humid. And using plastic for the first planting process can give time for adaptation with the new environment.
U can use hormone like auxin to promote root for ur propagation, and hormone cytokinin to promote growth and new leaf.
    *IMHO

I actually learned this from your video about spraying hoyas with orchid fertiliser - but same thing seemed to really help my melanochrysum that was sitting there doing nothing? Second thing I learned with melanochrysum is that they seem to hate being shipped, the one I got online is struggling much more than the one I traded for in person that was raised in the same climate as me. idk if this will help anyone else but I also struggled with this plant so thought I’d share.

There actually isn’t a thing as a flordia ghost “mint”, when it comes out mint its just not getting enough light. 🙂 more light, the whiter it gets, but you have to leave it in the bright light for at least 3 months for the white leaves to come back. Maybe your friend will get them back!

definitely P. Melano is by far my favorite plant ! xD
i highly recommend using mycorrhizae, is a beneficial fungus that colonizes the roots and make them grow reeeeeaaally good, people dont always use them for houseplants it is usually used for sowing seeds and crops to make them healthier, but since i started using it, i would never go back, i totally see how strong and good the roots with mine, it helps to prevent root rot. greeting form costa rica :)

The Florida Ghost white leaves will die if they are shipped. The 'Mint' doesn't exist mostly because it depends on how much light the plant gets. Alot of light they new ones will be white, mid light it will give a minty color, low light they come out green. They don't have variegation and eventually the all white or all minty leaf will turn full green. If its variegation that you wanted your best bet is in the Florida Beauty.

What a depressing video. I don't think I"ll ever order international plants again, they just seem way too expensive for plants that just never seem to recover and thrive.
