I'm a Native vegan myself, west coast. Fishing for salmon is a pillar of my people's way of life, and when that culture has been getting slowly lost and attacked over centuries, the response to protect it is almost instinctual But even with all that said, I can't help but look at studies like these and get angry that my relatives won't give up on eating fish in what's effectively a kind of forced-up industrialization that has nothing to do with tradition, because for as much as I want the teachings of my ancestors to live on, I can't imagine they'd have wanted this
Unfortunately that seems to be a common de-evolution of civilizations. More "primitive" civilizations are extremely close to their food sources and can see the link between the causes of food scarcity. Celtic people would see a drought and think, "I hope I can still feed my family." Now people see a drought and think, "Ugh, I guess I can't water my lawn... screw it, I'll just water it at night when no one will see."
I’m a native vegan, too, but from the east coast. I talk about this stuff with my native friends sometimes. Well, the vegans who made this doc like to stereotype all fisheries as being non sustainable, when the reality is that there are nuances and in some cases the fisheries IS sustainable

We need to fish to feed our population, The one good debatable thing about animal products is you can feed animals things that humans can't eat and you get a higher amount of food With vitamins like vitamin K2 which a large portion of the population cannot produce because of some of our ancestors eating meat has down regulated gene expressions of enzyme production. A decent portion of ppl can be vegan if they plan there diet correctly but a large portion can not and that's just a genetic fact. I watched What the health, Cowspiracy and Seaspiracy.... The latter one hit me so much I cried and decided to speak on veganism even more than before. I watched Earthlings & I dont think my heart will be repaired. Nothing will compare to that pain and anger and disgust. That was the line for me. I can't imagine someone watching & choose to still contribute
In the end, after all the facts and figures, documentaries and what not, I always have one question for people: Do you really want to kill an animal to eat at your 'pleasure', while there is no physiological reason for you to do so?
"Unsupported by science" or not, the film got my boyfriend and I to stop eating seafood entirely. In addition to the pain felt by the fish, by-catch, the pollution of the oceans, and the over-fishing to feed our national gluttony, we've been making a bigger effort to eat seasonal locally grown produce from the various farms that surround us in Eastern PA. The only aquatic food near us hails from the smelly rivers. I'll pass.
Amazingly enough yesterday (on my birthday) I was asked if I could imagine myself ever eating animals ever again. I discounted ever eating any beef, pork or poultry but did concede that I might consider treating myself to fish again someday. I watched Seaspiracy today. I now recant my hypothetical return to fish eating EVER.
fish was the last type of meat I boycotted before going vegan. My stepdad caught a fish for my birthday, and that was the last time I ever ate meat. I felt so guilty because I knew that fish didn’t need to be killed for my goddamn birthday dinner. I didn’t feel bad before dinner because I thought “well he caught it himself so at least it’s more sustainable” but I felt so selfish once I began actually eating it :(

As a family we all saw the documentary yesterday, and I have to say I found it an informing and powerful documentary. I looked into the science and facts and found them generally accurate. Hey man thanks for your video I totally agree with you. That's great! :-D Goes to show, she was affected, morally, by it and aware she was contribution to a harmful system but wasn't quite ready to tackle it head on. I'm so glad it's sunk in and she got it. :-)
I’d love to see these type of documentaries actually do a pre debunking of the opposing side’s “debunk” before the end of them. lol It’ll be look “oop we can’t say that, they’re already covered that” 😹
Great work as always Mike. Invariably all these "debunkings" are as you said, nitpicking statistics but not disproving the underlying reality. It's like being trapped in a room slowly filling with water and the people want to argue about how fast the level is actually rising rather than figuring a way out.
I'm thrilled it's hitting #1 in many places. A co worker of mine has told me she watched it with her bf and it really "made her think". I dunno if it really will change her behavior, as by her own words she hasn't been eating much fish anyways (which we all know means "I don't reflect on my diet at all") but well ... I think anti-vegans aren't the most heart breaking people to come across. I think the people who are like "yes, I agree! Yes, you are right! Yes, this needs to stop!" but aren't adjusting their behavior are way worse :-/
I mean, even if the turtle death from the fishing industry is much less than 250k that could just be due to already being less turtles in the ocean, so less deaths occur... declining population, declining cases
Had no idea that MSc certifies bottom trawling, wtf. Won't be re-stocking my Tuna cans when they run out now. Most people tend to lash out when they're confronted with what they are doing is harmful. A big part of the money system is distance from seeing how anything is produced. Hope the good documentaries keep on coming and get people talking and changing their habits that we've all been lulled into
Fish fraud is a giggle I’ve opened boxes of frozen haddock, cod and hake and they’ve all been the same fish all MSC certified. It’s been going on for years when monk fish was cheap it was passed off as scampi now you’ll see formed scampi which could be any old by catch mashed up, shaped and covered in bread crumbs.
What about pointing out the tragedy of the commons, the looming and certain devastation to human food sources if this insanity is not stopped immediately? This is like modern civilization ignoring pandemic dangers from eating meat, but perhaps a million times bigger in magnitude.

One of the things I liked about the interviews I've seen from the producers is that they list limiting animal products as well as a plant-based diet. So, while they themselves choose a vegan diet, there appears to be an acknowledgement that such a change can't be the immediate goal. Rather, a move in that direction for everyone is what is best for the oceans and planet. I think if future "vegan propaganda" addresses this then it will all but eliminate arguments. Let's face it, vegans have a track record for being somewhat all-or-nothing and that hurts our message.
Jesus fed 5000 people with fish. Even ate some himself. So I suppose next you are going to tell me you are a Satanist? LOL The same God who created you and those fish told you it was o.k. to eat those fish because that's is what they were created For. This is the Big problem I have with sanctimonious vegans, they want people to treat them as equals and not judge them all the while they judge everyone else. I enjoy a vegan diet for health reasons because we eat too much meat but to deny a food created for us when we could eat it is Nutzo.

I am not a vegan and I can agree that we need to deal with the fishing industry as a whole just from the outlook of sustainability and the health of those who do eat fish. Just limiting the types and area's where fishing is allowed would actually create a net positive increase in target and non-target fish populations far and above consumption. I'm not here to argue about whether it's right or wrong to eat the fish because that's a matter of personal choice and freedom. I don't see why anyone would not get behind provable methods to protect and improve our oceans and the life within it, eat it or not this is a laudable and important thing to do for the whole world.
i’ve been a vegan for years & am at a point where as a christian don’t particularly ascribe to it for moral reasons… but it blows my mind when people try to paint me like some sort of new age buddhist ascetic for being plant based & their entire argument is that these documentaries have been somehow “debunked”

The most funny thing is, in some articles they say fishing causes way lower GHG-Emissions than other types of food and compare it to meat from land animals and dairy. I mean, yes, things like beef is worse but that does not mean fishing is good. Things like oats, wheat and lentils sill have way lower GHG-emissions.
I’m done sharing meals with people while they are eating animals. ....that pretty much means I’m eating at home. And it’s insane how people willfully disrespect my house rules and bring meat into my home. I’ve been complicit for too long, looking the other way while my friends and family eat animals other people murdered for them. And yet somehow, I am viewed as the alienating force. As a 25 year animal rights veteran, I am less hopeful than ever. Mic and Earthling Ed and Dr. Gregor, etc are inspirations, but change isn’t coming fast enough if at all. Animal farming is celebrated and subsidized to ensure its propagation, which is accomplished by innumerable rapes and thefts and murders. Our civilization is based in greed and selfishness. It’s a marvel how humans think themselves to not be animals.
I'd say you aren't opening your eyes big enough, because there's been massive change. Of course it can never be "fast enough", since animals and people are suffering now, but there's been a real shift in the attention veganism gets, what's on the market and what's in progress. The more normalized it becomes, the easier it will be for people previously against such ideas to be receptive.
Don’t give up yet. I’m a grandmother and a vegan for just over two years. I was shocked when I discovered people my age are becoming vegan in droves. Yay!🎉👏😄

Fishing is fine. With a pole and line. Nets no, long lines no. I love the ocean. I hate what we are doing. I will not go vegan but I'll fish my own fish.
What most people don t understand is that if we don t fish for 5 years all the fishes will get back to normal numbers...but for that you need to have fishes so they can reproduce...I live in Tahiti we practice Rahui sort of a pause so fishes can recover....

@Indy M so 85% of people going vegan don't quit with in 5 years.. This is all made up I'm guessing?
I'm a Native vegan myself, west coast. Fishing for salmon is a pillar of my people's way of life, and when that culture has been getting slowly lost and attacked over centuries, the response to protect it is almost instinctual
But even with all that said, I can't help but look at studies like these and get angry that my relatives won't give up on eating fish in what's effectively a kind of forced-up industrialization that has nothing to do with tradition, because for as much as I want the teachings of my ancestors to live on, I can't imagine they'd have wanted this
Unfortunately that seems to be a common de-evolution of civilizations.
I imagine they would be horrified.
Thank you for speaking on this
I’m a native vegan, too, but from the east coast. I talk about this stuff with my native friends sometimes. I totally see where you and where they are coming from, but yeah the industrialization and the commercialization is so far from sacred! Idk I think it’s important to keep teaching traditions but also I feel like veganism is the way to go. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense I’m half asleep lol

People like to stereotype vegans as paranoid bunny huggers. I’m just a person who wants a planet for my kids to live on.

Im so happy this channel exists

Great work as always Mike. Invariably all these "debunkings" are as you said, nitpicking statistics but not disproving the underlying reality. It's like being trapped in a room slowly filling with water and the people want to argue about how fast the level is actually rising rather than figuring a way out.
I haven't eaten fish since watching seaspiracy, and have cut all animal products out of my diet 2 weeks ago.

I think it will help a lot of fence sitters, and those that may not of known the scale of it all, then get inspired.
Let's face it, vegans have a track record for being somewhat all-or-nothing and that hurts our message.
the main circular reasoning point is the attack against the fact that there is no such thing as sustainable fishing
which is endlessly frustrating
Thanks so much, Mic, for being a voice of reason and such a fine example of "humans at our best!"

The industry knows that all it needs do is sprinkle doubt upon the subject - the buyers of fish will then shrug their shoulders and carry on as usual.

As a 25 year animal rights veteran, I am less hopeful than ever. Mic and Earthling Ed and Dr. Gregor, etc are inspirations, but change isn’t coming fast enough if at all. I'd say you aren't opening your eyes big enough, because there's been massive change. Of course it can never be "fast enough", since animals and people are suffering now, but there's been a real shift in the attention veganism gets, what's on the market and what's in progress. Great job, Mike. "You can fool some of the people all of the time..." We all know how this goes....and the fishing industry is going DOWN.....It's sea life, NOT seafood! But the BIG question I have is: Have Ali and Lucy gone VEGAN and put their money where their mouths are? This will be interesting. Thank you, Mic!
I'm looking forward to "Woolspiracy". Mike, would you make a video on wool?
Thank you for being such an inspiration.
The industry is trying to make hay from an updated study. The study citing fishery collapse by 2048 was updated. It now says by 2050, we vegans are such exaggerators and we straight up lied😉🤣. It’s seems the industry plans to save the oceans between 2048-2050, what was I worried about. The depth of how hard they’re reaching is just more evidence for the issues.
Juliette Autumn and Hot for Health are clueless
Fishing is fine. With a pole and line. Nets no, long lines no. I love the ocean. I hate what we are doing. I will not go vegan but I'll fish my own fish.
Awesome. Thanks for this❤️
Definitely needed this one
Where is Greenpeace when you need them ???
What most people don t understand is that if we don t fish for 5 years all the fishes will get back to normal numbers...but for that you need to have fishes so they can reproduce...I live in Tahiti we practice Rahui sort of a pause so fishes can recover....
