Hello everyone! My name is Ian Urbina, and I am the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, which produced this amazing documentary film. I’ll be happy to answer any questions here (with input from the filmmakers Ed Ou, Will Miller, and Michael Hsu). Thanks for watching.
Hi Ian, all the visual material is real correct ? How did you film this ? Hidden cameras, you had the permits.... Extraordinary film by the way, congrats !!
@@garrusv Personally, my goal was to offer a counterbalance to the investigative reporting, which provides a critical assessment of the human-rights and environmental record of this fleet. We sought to offer a more intimate look at the experience of working in such a grueling job. The film also aimed to communicate why someone might choose to take one of these dangerous, often exploitative jobs. Two challenges for the whole team were getting on the vessels themselves and figuring out how to tell the story in a way that didn't jeopardize individual people that we met during the reporting.
Hi Ian there's the Krill Vacuuming as well in the South Atlantic, there's problems brewing there. Are you going to cover it. There is a problem with factory fishing off the East Africa Coast and the North Atlantic too. Out Of Sight Out Of Mind.
I read your article online via "LA Times" titled "They catch squid for the world’s table. But deckhands on Chinese ships pay a deadly price". I came across this video to see a "Chinese squid boat" up close. Both are excellent. RIP Fadhil and others.
Superb film, absolute masterpiece. I totally loved the photography and the story telling. Reading the article before made the difference on the deep understanding of the film. Fabulous.
@@psystealth Of course, because people who have your mindset exist. They will continue buying it because "well they will still fish them" but in reality if enough people cared about morality, they would stop purchasing it, and there would be no market for this.

it's the CCP rights kidding me they threw you overboard with a brick but you let you become squid food the Chinese Communist Party has over 300,000 fishing vessels just think of that now? They could wipe everything out if they wanted to
I was born n raised in what was then the country's largest commercial fishing port. SIXTY YEARS AGO, when I was a small child, Russian, Asian, n Scandinavian countries sent huge fishing factory fleets to what was the richest fishing grounds in the world, the Grand Banks, in the North Atlantic. American fleets could not compete against these factory fleets that could do all the processing of their catches at sea. Today the Grand Banks is a barren wasteland n my proud hometown fishing fleet is no longer, throwing generations of fishermen permanently out of work.

The Argentine coast guard is doing everything possible to combat the Chinese fleet of squid jiggers. They have already captured several boats fishing for squid in Argentine territorial waters.

Seeing how people treat the world and the masses don't care hurts. I wish it could've gotten away as well. This isn't sustainable and I'm sure they probably just let them suffocate. I wish china cared. I know all countries aren't blameless but China has no regard as a government for the environment or the people. Make money by any means basically.
It’s not, the Chinese people and agencies and people across the world that act like this do not care or worry about sustainability. There is a lot of selfishness and greed in this world, it is especially concentrated in those at the top with tons of money and power, so unfortunately it will continue to get worse without some sort of revolution.
Squids are the opposite of endangered... their populations are booming because of the warming climate and the absence of natural predators such as Tuna. It is environmentally healthy to fish as much squid as possible. They together with jellyfish are in danger of overwhelming the oceans
silly comment as we have wiped out tuna, shark all predatory fish populations so your answer is wipe out all else, if you did that then it will be sea worms and chips. solution is stop over fishing the predators as they will bring back the balance
The fishing isn't the problem confronted here, it is the poor working conditions and forced labor of the crew members. I don't care about the squid, but the industry is rife with human exploitation.
Its a reality - China has a super huge fishing fleet and wherever they go they decimate the area - and these Chinese fishing boats are also quasi- military boats and each one can be outfitted with missiles and weapons - so basically its a 1200 ship fleet Chinese military operation and it would take a huge amount of warships to defeat them! Beware!
