But it's not reviewing very well with buyers. On Steam it has fallen all the way down to a "Mixed" rating.

The thing is is that a lot of these games are 20 plus years old, many people feel like we've already waited long enough. It's honestly a little bit frustrating that they're waiting until it's profitable to release the games instead of just releasing the games because they're due for a remake

@@fenniken5381 I'm with you guys, we're not going to see Square-Enix say "No more remakes, we're going to make Dragon Quest XII an action-RPG with the graphical style of FFVII Rebirth and lots of minigames."
No, they are saying "We'll put out Dragon Quest 1 and 2 Remake but after that, we want to take a year off of that genre so that we can focus on Dragon Quest XII." They know that doing the same type of game every time is going to cause a few issues with people getting bored and leaving for FFXIV or something like that.
Tell them it's very difficult to please everyone. No matter how late you delay the genre, people are going to say "This graphic style sucks, I'd prefer to see something like Dragon Quest XI, the original" and leave Square-Enix for Elden Ring or something else. I'll continue to support the series. I want to see Dragon Quest Builders 3, I want to see a Dragon Quest Monsters game for the Playstation with trophy support. • @StrnGuy

I think this is a fair concern on Square Enix’s part. Even though people buy remakes, they also grumble about how everything’s a remake. So then you have Squeenix running in with a VERY distinct visual style like “okay here’s a dragon quest remake and an ffv remake and an ogre battle 64 remake and” and all of a sudden people think HD2D is tired and they’re sick of it. IMO SquareEnix should just think of this as… the style they go to when they want to make classic-style RPGs, whether a remake or something completely new. Because a lot of people, myself included, just aren’t really that down with super big budget cinematic action RPGs. There’s something about older-style turn based games that just feels cozy as hell.

Yeah. Slow down the release of the games a little bit so that our wallets can allow us to get the games and not have to pick and choose which ones to skip and give a little more time to release quality games. I’m not saying that they are bad, but maybe they can be better. I think that would increase sales as well as allow them to make the releases not when another highly anticipated game release is so soon to take away their hype. The HD2D revolution brings with it a highly nostalgic factor for older gamers as well as a reintroduction for newer gamers that can rekindle the fandom for franchises.

What could help is if they did HD2D style for games that are more obscure in between the DQ titles that way it would look more like Square is trying to help bring games that are less known to the modern audience rather than just bringing out DQ after DQ so quickly. That being said since I did not play most of the earlier titles since I started with DQ11 on switch (although I have since played a few more titles that are available on switch since) it would still be nice to see the other mainline DQ titles to be more available on current platforms.

  • @Katie-hb8iq
    @Katie-hb8iq 4 дні тому +1

David, I think these old-school RPGs can work, but they need to offer enough quality-of-life features and modern innovations while staying true to their retro selves. The biggest problem with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D is that it's just too faithful for its own good. That doesn't make Dragon Quest a bad game for some people-in fact, I realize that's exactly what some people want. But I think a lot of people want more quality-of-life features and modern innovation in this type of game, and this audience might even be bigger than the purist one (in most cases, it usually is much larger).
For example, I played the original Dragon Warrior on NES. I've been playing turn-based RPGs all my life-we're talking over 30 years now. But I have a time-consuming career, like most of us-the target audience for these games-do in our late 30s or early 40s. I still love these games, but what I don't love is when the game wastes my limited free time.
For example, a big problem with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is just how low the quality of life is. The boat moves so slow. Every time you get out of a battle, or every time Padfoot, Fade, or some other buff expires, a stupid pop-up shows up, and you have to go through the boat acceleration all over again just to get back to full speed. Why?
And what about Animal Instinct and Nose for Treasure? Why do I have to go into a convoluted menu system to cast both of these spells in every area? Why can't I just assign favorite spells and abilities to buttons on my controller? I used these spells like 1,000 times over my 44 hours with Dragon Quest. I sure would have liked to just press a button to use them rather than go into the menu thousands of times to select them over and over.
Then you have enemy spells like Thwack, which give them 4-12 chances to instant-kill your party members in a single round of combat. I never lost because of this, but I sure spent a ton of time in the menus casting Zing to resurrect party members, even after equipping those accessories that were supposed to prevent these instant-death mechanics in the first place!
And then there's the random battles-it's just a never-ending stream of random battles. It's even hard to get your bearings on some maps because of how frequent these random battles are. I basically used Holy Protection/Padfoot for half of the game!
As long as these games keep features like this, I think the sales potential for these HD-2D games is going to be niche and limited.

After Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, I kind of envisioned HD2D as a sort of "series" itself - like, a way to make new games that look old, but have new gameplay possibilities. Once I started seeing older games in the catalog get remade in HD2D style, I felt overwhelmed...like instead of trying to put up their whole damn catalogue in HD2D, they should think of ways to use the new environment to do more interesting things in gameplay. Like, yeah - Octopath Traveler was great and all...but honestly, every dungeon was just a straight path, and humping the walls would reward you with secret passageways to treasure. No mazes. No gimmicks. No interacting with the environment. Every dungeon. The exact same.
HD2D should be treated more like a gameplay mechanic, and they should find ways to use it to make the game more interesting. Let us play with the camera and lightning. Let us interact with stuff in towns and dungeons, especially in ways that can only be done in three dimensions. Hell - just let us jump, lol. I think using it as an innovation is the key to keeping it interesting, rather than treating it like a simple graphical update.

I think Square struck gold with the HD-2D style, and I'm happy they're concerned about not overdoing it. I hope they do their best to keep these games being special, and not turning it into a hyped fad.
Lufia duology would be a great addition to the set, since its stronger emphasis on puzzle solving would be a nice differential from the other HD-2D ones. I also agree that a Chrono Trigger remake would work in Trials of Mana style, and it would also be a great tribute to Akira Toriyama's legacy and art

I really enjoy the 2d-HD style rpg. If they released a few a year, I’d be happy. But it’s completely understandable that they don’t want to oversaturate the market. The only games that can get away with it is COD, open world sandbox survival, and possibly souls style games. Personally I’m hopeful for a side series in the same vein of the SNES Final Fantasy games.

I kinda agree with the execs at Square Enix here. If all games looks the same because they use the same engine and they create these games too fast as if they were out of a factory, in the long run, people will be bored. I think it's a good idea to still use the HD2D for some games, but also they could create something new for other games, like they did back then on the DS with DQ4-5-6. The second trilogy should't be like the first one.

Opening the flood gates would be a terrible idea because it could lead to fatigue quick. Which seems to be what they're talking about. I want DQ IV-VI in HD2D way more than 1-2 but perhaps a better ide a would be to bring the 3D remake of VII and VIII to HD platforms. Dragon Quest XII is probably still a ways off so I think giving the fans what they want and bringing VIII to modern platforms would help maintain interest in DQ and offset the HD2D fatigue.

I think the look of HD-2D is so distinct, they’re afraid of looking like they’re just using a cookie cutter to churn out one remake after another. Of all their series, I thought Romancing SaGa would have benefited the most from this and look what they did with 2. It’s phenomenal the way it turned out. Even with the restrictions from the snes days, most of their output really stood out from game to game. It would be a disservice to treat all of those old games the same.

FFVI would suit this style for sure, Chrono Trigger would lose some of the vibrancy from 2D HD though, and I agree a different style would be better for it. I just want a definitive version of Chrono Trigger, the SNES version with a proper translation, the anime FMVs and DS extra content, I don't even think it needs much in the way of modern QoL to be honest. 2-3 2DHD games a year would be nice. I just know they wouldn't sprea their relases out though.

They're not supposed to "flood the market" with this type of game, but rather release them in a sensible manner at an appropriate time. We've seen how it works out when they flood the market with their games already and it wasn't pretty.
That being said, maybe go a bit slower on the Dragon Quest games once 1+2 remake are out and maybe work on 1-3 other titles in the meantime to prevent franchise fatique, because that's what's more likely to happen, not HD-2D fatique.
As for other games, I'm definitely with you on Lufia 2, maybe even Lufia 1 if they polish it a bit, like get rid of the perma miss when you target an enemy that has already been defeated.
Other than that, I'd be a happy gamer if they'd consider Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the HD-2D treatment, because I feel like this game could be a lot more than it is now. It was my first RPG and to this day I still love it.

Treasure of the Rudra's, Bahamut Lagoon, and Lufia are also ones I'd love to see again (so long as they don't do action like they tried with the DS Lufia 2 "Remake"). Outside HD2D I'd love to just get the PSP version of FF4 outside of the PSP. I'm guessing we'll get FFVI after DQ 1-2 completes unless they already started on other projects and keeping them on the down low. I don't see DQ 7 anytime soon, and I have my doubts on IV-VI of DQ, but would be happy to be wrong on it. Honestly I just want Ogre Battle remastered. Even just added to the Switch Online for SNES and N64. Come on Unicorn showed how much people want a game like that.

Im clearly a very big fan of Dragonquest, Bird Studios and Mr Toriyama. So, of course , if Square and Enix ever had a falling out then i would surely support Enix way more, as i did before the merging. There has to be some reasonable compromise between releasing a good remake of an old game and not having people not purchasing games. And I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the economics of remaking a game, but if they released say DQ 1,2,3,4,5,6 in this same style AND charge $60 a pop for them, then yeah they're not going to sell as much. But if they take a page from Final Fantasy and have them $15-20 per and perhaps a bundle for less per, then yeah I can see that working well from the consumer side (again I don't know the business side, just from the side where my wallet is the one doing the purchasing).
And lets be perfectly honest, it's not like they simply load the old code into a computer and poof an HD-2D remake comes out... although with "AI" maybe it does? So it's not like you're going to get all the games in a 1 month time frame.

I'm willing to let SE decide the timing of releases, as long as they eventually do hd2d (or better) remakes of most of their older 2d games (I'm less certain about giving that treatment to games like DQ8 that were originally 3d). Doing Chrono Trigger in the style of Visions of Mana sounds awesome, but even doing it in 2.5d (like the remake of Secret of Mana) would be cool. I'm not personally a fan of strategy rpgs (possibly due to struggling with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance), but I'd also be happy if they figured out how to get the rights to remake the Quintet/Enix games Illusion of Gaia and Robotrek.

Likely it is difficult finding large enough development partners able to work in 2d workflow. Also Team Asano(Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, Live A Live Remake) the internal Team that worked with Artdink on Dragon Quest 3 HD2D is not the regular Dragon Quest team with Hori mostly in a supervisor role and less involved. Sounds to me that Square Enix is being cautious more than anything.
I don't doubt that Chrono Trigger is coming up for a Remake, I do Doubt it would work well in HD2D given the extra emphasis on animation Chrono Trigger had. At least Artdink had severe issues implementing more dynamic attack animation for you party in DQ3HD due to the work load, leading to them being scrapped. Some developers have gotten Akira Toriyama's style to work very well in 3d Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, Sparking Zero and Dragon Ball Fighterz all come to mind.

  • @MarioDS01

A little mixed of the "news". I kind of understand why they want to do it, yet there is still a HUGE market for remakes, especially for classic old RPG games. It would be a shame if they start missing out on it if it starts to die down too much.
Personally, I would love to see a remake of Chrono Trigger, regardless of it being 3D cel shaded or hd 2d remake. Not only would I like to see quality of life updates and possibly a revamped battle system, but I would also love some new optional story elements to the game. Maybe a player rather romances one of the other female characters with Chrono either with choices in "present" time, or Chrono can time travel in his personal history or something to get closer to certain characters or just change a certain event to open the romance path. This would not only give more replay value, but it would also give new endings.

They haven't released a ton of these games so I think it might be the usual Japanese being more cautious in business.
I feel this is causing some real discussions at Square Enix simply for the fact that Dragon Quest 3 Remake is apparently selling better than both FF 16 and 7 remake. Which I'm sure surprised the hell out of them given they thought the market was going the Call of Duty route where you need these massive budgets and system breaking graphics and real time combat and something like DQ 3 was never thought of as 'what we want'.
But what we want are great games, we love dungeon crawling and turn based RPGs so no the success doesn't surprise me.

Hmmm... this one's tough for me. On one hand, I absolutely adore the look and feel of the new DQ3 HD-2D remake. But on the other hand, I think this is a case of trying to make games look realistic as possible, or somehow less like a game and more like a movie, and I'm not into that at all. I want a game that looks and feels like a game, and my particular preference is older RPG games in the 16 bit or even 8 bit era. I do understand though why people want to see older games from thirty years ago remade with this new visual style. I'd say if anything that I would echo what most of the comments here suggest... if one of these older games are going to be remade, just add quality of life stuff, maybe even some new content, but the visual style doesn't really need to change all that much... or even at all. I mean, I want to wear my nostalgia glasses proudly when I play these beloved games from my childhood! I don't need to see the games through a new lens, so to speak. But again... the style is fantastic looking for sure...

And with the success of DQ3 Remake I worry that they will stop making new HD-2D games.
