    I have a couple of equipments that use coils in the engines. Now I can test them. Thanks again.

    Rarely see a BMW in Montana, US. Delco Remy and Auto-Lite coils don't have that feature.
    Thanks for the refresher on coils. Plenty of old vehicles & machinery around here.

      Thanks for the comment! Of course, BMW is more for Europe. And old cars are for fans, for the soul.

    Yes that tells us how to test the resistance. But why oh why is there no video on UA-cam that tells us how to test the VOLTAGE of the coil?? Very annoying.

    I had this coil on my w123 280ce mercedes and when it failed, the circle cap (your question) had a blow out and some oil leaked from it so I imagine its a safety valve and check valve

    Ohms testing is great but temperature effects things massively hard wiring is by far the best choice. I used to reflash ecu's and temperature would effect that to the point they wouldn't reflash properly. Just a thought anyway happy youtubing

    You can also add 12v to the positive post put the ht lead in the coli with a spark plug in the end run a jump lead from the negative from the battery to the plug and and connect a wire from the minus side of the coil striking the spark plug it should spark if it doesn't coil is no good

    • @XarlioG60
      @XarlioG60 Рік тому +1

      How much the spark should be visible in a room completely dark doing 12V check?

    • @martinp8427
      @martinp8427 Рік тому

      @@XarlioG60 By performing the battery test you should see a small spark from the spark plug. Keep in mind that the bigger spark will be produced when touching the wire that connects from the coil negative to the battery negative :D
      You can take a look at the video below, it was already tested in this channel:

    Should it replaced?

    I am thinking a little hole in the coil was to put the wires in place. It's probably where the clip fit into. But that's just a guess because I have no idea what are the coil came from or what it belongs to.

      The coil was on a BMW, and the hole is a fuse, in case the coil fails

    When I put one probe into the output terminal and one against the outside of the coil I get a 7.50 reading, which is the same reading I get if I go from a primary terminal to the output terminal. Does that mean the coil is bad? My motorcycle seems to be running ok, but if the coil is bad I should replace it.

    • @norisboren5402
      @norisboren5402 9 місяців тому

      Bad. Should replace. It's case should not have an Ohm reading like that.

    • @helpfromthegarage1677
      @helpfromthegarage1677  3 роки тому +2

      Hello! If the ignition module is defective, a fuse will blow in this hole in the ignition coil. This will protect the coil from explosion.

      As far as I know, it is impossible to change this. If there is no plug in the ignition coil, then the coil must be replaced.

    Great video but there so cheap it's almost quicker to just swap it anyway?? If you have doubts about a old coil chances are it's been on the engine for a while so just change it.

    • @lisacolbert5987
      @lisacolbert5987 Рік тому

      Not nowadays , especially for older vehicles. Just paid 100$ for an old/new (in box unused but on the shelf for years) Bosch coil (yes, you can certainly still buy a no-name for 15$ + shipping but it’s pretty common to buy a dud coil and think there’s something else going on electrically and spend time/$ trying to chase it down). And a video like this will help you eliminate a bad coil before going to the next possibility .
