Thank you for this video, I installed an HEI distributor from Southwest Performance, worked great for a year, now with no spark, bought their TUNEUP Kit and still no spark, I sent them several emails in the past 2 weeks and no reply, phone number listed is disconnected. So i pulled out my old distributor and going back to points. Never again after markets. You showed me how to go back to original. Thank you fellas, oh by the way, my truck is an 1969 Ford F250, with IL6 240ci engine.
My father inherited a '82 Ford truck from my grandfather, and like you, the local auto parts store couldnt help with anything of that age.spent a lot of time searching for answers and troubleshooting.started watching your videos and you released a lot of secrecy for my truck and you're a intelligent 🧠 young man and thank you thank you ...ported is definitely the way to go. 351w 400 heads. Totally amazing.
I am working on a forklift and have never done a points ignition before, but manually grounding the coil to make it spark was the trick I needed to troubleshoot this thing and I managed to get it working. Thank you.
btw read some of the other comments idk wtf theyre talking about your buddy literally explained exactly what each of the grand total of three wires do in a coil and right where they don't let anyone get to you on the internet keep it up!
@@63Imp283 if you are having to clean points you prob. have wrong value condenser the cond has match the coil electricly wrong cond will not .pass proper amount of votage so it jumps back thru the open points to gd pitting the points verfy proper condenser. most dealers have old manuals showing all original part #s
Thank you for the video I got two days to brush up on my skills I've been a long time but if I get it right I got a hell of a deal for 50 bucks 32-ft motor home no spark thank you
Cant't see it, where was that wire specificly hooked up at that you were arking to make the sparkplug fire? I couldent tell without altrady knowing how to do the test. Please don't assume people know anything. Because sometimes a specific procedure is completly new to them. No one knows everything, and no one always will know all the basics, thats why they struggle to understand what you are attempting to communicate. That coil test is very simple to do. But if you don't know what wires are going to a specific location and you dont know the procedure. How can you go pottie ?
Is points like that basic across-the-board I have a 1956 Dodge Flathead 6 and I got no spark. trying to learn my way around this truck. This video look the same as to what I have
Im a bit late recently rebuilt my 83 cortina mk5 pick up but for some reason theres a spark between the positive and negative on the ignition coil any help
Hi i want to ask because my new spark is going out of function i don't know if it's the fold of the pulse pickup coil because my sparks going out of function,i have change the ignition coils and that was not the problem i this a CDI problem or pulse coils If this is puckup coil the bike will not turn on right ?
Sir, I just got a 1968 F500 with 300 inline six. For some reason the previous owner unbolted the valve cover but it appears to have new(old) distributor cap, rotor, and points and wires and maybe spark plugs. I still need to pull out the spark plugs and test for spark.
Can you tell me what the capacitance (in uF) of the condenser is? I got one years ago and it measured either 0.2uF or 2uF, I can't remember which (and my capacitance meter was junk). Is this in the ballpark? Thanks much,
seem to be a common prob.with (spark) usuall that is caused by wrong condenser installed mant consenser look just alike but the are wound diff inside they come in diff micrfared values to work correct they must match the coil electricly very old dealer manuals for proper condenser # of original the cross ref todays equivlant with correct condenser the spark should jump 3/4 of an inch with eng idiling pull a plug wire off insert screwdriver hold close to eng how far will jump1/4 or less not good if close to 3/4 inch very good whi changed mine it went from 1/8 in to 3/4 inch big diff.worth looking into
can you show how to set up the makeshift key switch you guys hooked up? Doing the same to a 66 f100 that hasn't run in 10 years and the ignition switch was harvested out of it.
ive tried everything in this video and replaced most of my ignition system at this point (spark plugs, Spark plug wires, points, condenser and coil) still cant get spark if anyone has any suggestions or ideas please let me know im about to go crazy P.S. it's for a 1967 ford thunderbird V8 390
No one owns a cheap set of feeler gauges in this day and age ? all the auto part stores carry them under $5, stop messing around and set your points accurately (business cards and matchbook covers are ‘side of the road, makeshift methods at best !).
I took out Pertronix I install 100 miles ago in my 1972 2.0 Pinto and put points back in because the car was back firing, tac jumping up and down, I'm just done with that after market crap. Car runs awesome again on points, Now I'm trying to get them to just refund me for it, Hassle. I'm making a youtube on the whole ordeal. ?? I ran my pinto around the block a few times with the 40,000 volt Flamethrower coil part# 40511 that came with the pertronix as a kit USING THE POINTS and it seems peppy, But I'm hearing on some google sites that it's not good to run a hot coil like that with points. because it will burn your points faster. I'm putting the Stock Pinto coil I have from the 70s back in because of what I'm reading about the hot coil no no. ANY BODY WANT TO CHIME IN ON HOT WITH POINTS???
It is beyond me why someone parks a vehicle, especially outside, and leaves it for any extended period of time without at least running the engine occasionally or driving it. If you can't fix it or maintain it, sell it.
Very confusing, did not show how to hook up the coil, did not explain procedure very well. Maybe you did explain it well for a seasoned mechanic, I know little to nothing and tried to learn by watching your video, just ended up wasting my time.

No problem!
Very satisfying to see the old Ford drive out of the woods.
btw read some of the other comments idk wtf theyre talking about your buddy literally explained exactly what each of the grand total of three wires do in a coil and right where they don't let anyone get to you on the internet keep it up!
I always used a matchbook cover. Worked every time!💥
That's a great idea you can use the stryker to sand the points clean too👍

Been trying to figure out how to test a coil (other than resistance method). This is exactly what I was looking for. Short and to the point. Thanks
Great tip. Been a long time on points, and a good refresher. Thanks for posting.

Not for current subscribers? I subscribed because of the F100 videos! I want more!
Thanks, i have a spark issue with my 1961 Comet. I will follow this and try to solve my issue. Thanks for sharing, CC Old Car Garage
all ways verfy condenser on no or low spark prob.
Great job! I’m trying to do the same thing but on my’87 LandCruiser. Good video dude.
Wondering where the truck is now?
Excellent work Sir!
Love it. Humans rock. We can do anything
Can you eat your own head?
Appreciate your video, definitely not a Ford guy but that was pretty badass.
Thanks man 👍
Seriously you did an awesome job otherwise but you didn't show how to test the coil by hooking up the wires from the battery to it
Cant't see it, where was that wire specificly hooked up at that you were arking to make the sparkplug fire? I couldent tell without altrady knowing how to do the test. Thank you gentleman! Great informations.
Thanks so much. Helped me with no spark on old tractor.

Enjoyed that video! I got a 78 C10 short bed shop truck Im building on my channel and a 66f100 short bed. I subbed!
Wow! Exciting stuff. Thank you for the info!!
man thank you great carb videos as well learned so much! thanks for taking the time out!
Pretty damn impressive actually
Im a bit late recently rebuilt my 83 cortina mk5 pick up but for some reason theres a spark between the positive and negative on the ignition coil any help
Cool, I just don't know where u got that extra wire testing the ignition coil or how it was connected
I am trying to figure out the same thing
connect a wire to a negative post of the ignition coil
Hi i want to ask because my new spark is going out of function i don't know if it's the fold of the pulse pickup coil because my sparks going out of function,i have change the ignition coils and that was not the problem
i this a CDI problem or pulse coils
If this is puckup coil the bike will not turn on right ?
That is so freakin cool! Resurrection! :)

When putting the matchbook in between the two metal piece of the points do the Gap stay in there or does it close? Need help thanks
Thunderhead, if running the points bypass and you get spark with the plug ungrounded?
I need help. '73 challenger, no spark from coil. The coil has power.
I have a 289 stock distributor with electronic ignition.has new cap a rotor, plugs ,wires and coil. still will not start
Can you make a diagram how did you do that test?
Can you tell me what the capacitance (in uF) of the condenser is? I got one years ago and it measured either 0.2uF or 2uF, I can't remember which (and my capacitance meter was junk). Is this in the ballpark?
Thanks much,
Very informative.tnx for sharing

Not for any coil. Should say for automotive. Nice video
Wow no way! Good job!
Hey, where did you connect the wires to.
Amazing congrats guys
How did you hook up the spark plug to test coil?
Are you in Nebraska? Those bugs in the trees remind me of Nebraska.
Nice! 👍
I wanna know how to do this
Does the coil need to be grounded
No, you are interrupting the ground to fire the plug
ThunderHead289 thanks man love the channel
Do you have car decals
ive tried everything in this video and replaced most of my ignition system at this point (spark plugs, Spark plug wires, points, condenser and coil) still cant get spark if anyone has any suggestions or ideas please let me know im about to go crazy
P.S. it's for a 1967 ford thunderbird V8 390
.... dumb question, but do you have 8-12v even getting to the coil.
Remember, classic car owners aren’t parts changers, they are diagnosticians
exerpt?
Very good 👍 job

that there bus card trick always works.
And if not, you can catch the bus.
It is beyond me why someone parks a vehicle, especially outside, and leaves it for any extended period of time without at least running the engine occasionally or driving it. If you can't fix it or maintain it, sell it.
😃😃😃😃🙂
go ford go.
Why cant people make videos at daytime? So dARK
Because I’m at work #workingstiff

Watch my video on how to “check for spark” - this will greatly help you
Can't see a f****** thing
