When the character's counter play is built around perfect parry, when the majority of the player base is not well versed in the mechanic, it becomes common to see Honda completely derail the match. Especially when people love to burn excessive drive gauge against the character who deletes 1 bar on a blocked headbutt, putting them into burnout (death sentence against honda).
Honestly? The counterplay is "Stop trying to counter headbutt". Seriously, everybody's saying "DP it or Perfect parry it or whatever" and yes you CAN do that but you have to give up so much space to get into position to react to it you basically give him the corner for free. Block the headbutt (Parry it if you can) and focus on countering what he does AFTER the headbutt. Everything he can do that is super dangerous for you is a big risk for him, and if he wants to walk backwards to headbutt you again you can walk and block after him or drive rush + low to tag him while he's not watching his toes. The proof is honestly right here in this video, the people who spent the whole match trying to beat headbutt got smoked, while the people who played the post-headbutt game generally came out on top.

I think they designed Honda to close zoner gaps intentionally so you have to play a guessing game about throws, which is his art form's obvious strength, which qualifies him as a 'sneaky grappler.' Long time Honda fan here enjoying this resurgence.

Vesperarcade showed a great video of, I think it was Go1 as Honda, playing against maybe Kazunoko, and Kaz kept parrying the headbutt. Go1 thought it the parry was too good, but Dogura(?) didn't really believe that and told Go1 to throw out a standing fierce, and that made Kaz parry every time. It was hilarious. Anyways, Honda mains stand up! Also these plat players don't seem very good.
I meet people in silver who can perfect parry headbutts yet Broski and Jmcrofts can find Platinum players who can’t deal with it. It just makes me believe ranks below Diamond have no correlation with skill.
Couldnt have said it better myself, that Zangeif at the beginning was worse than some silvers ive played against. Seems to me he played people on alt character who have plat rank due to a main being higher and the game gifting him rank
I'm Plat 1 right now and the best use of DR I've seen was a Silver Zangief who would drive rush at me, expecting me to throw out an interrupting poke, and then he'd stop short and punish counter me, consistently. No one else I fought is even using drive rush outside of combos rn it's so funny

Just made it to Diamond yesterday with Honda, coming from Gold to Diamond took me 4 days to get there. Now everyone suddenly learned how to perfect parry headbutt and punish the shit out of me so i am really needing to get more creative.

Dude proceeds to play skillfully using nearly the full repertoire of moves, will timed DIs, even a few combos here and there.. taking note of when attacks are punishes or when they were avoidable, talking about the frame data of his opponents as he's fighting them. "See? Hopefully I've proved it today, you don't need skill to skill play Honda. You only need Headbutts to win." Nah man, you're just a great player. lol

I'm a diamond gief going on Master, and yes you have to be a bit of a masochist to play gief. Expect to always be half health atleast and know that the comeback is real . U just can't panic and be willing to lose so that u can win
You want to know the secret to beating headbutt? Stop throwing your games away trying so hard to beat headbutt! Yes, you can perfect parry it or DP it if you're far enough away from honda that you can react, but you're giving yourself an aneurysm trying so hard while the honda is just saying "hee hoo i press the funni button."... and all that distance you're putting between yourself and him is just free real estate for him to walk you into the corner with. Parry it if you can, but blocking it is fine. Focus on what to do AFTER you block the headbutt: The only things honda can do to you that will really mess you up are huge risks, and if they want to walk back to headbutt you again then walk and block after them or drive rush + low to catch them not watching their toes. Pay attention to what the honda likes to do after headbutt and focus on countering THAT. The proof is right here in the video, too. The people who had the most success in the matchup were the ones who were playing post-headbutt situation rather than getting hit over and over again trying to stop honda from headbutting.
When I started I went by the rank I got when I played SF5 one month before SF6 launched (bronze). So I won 9/10 and got placed in gold (faced some silvers and golds in the first like 7 rounds). Climbed all the way to diamond by realizing something pretty simple: People all the way to platinum don't know how to walk forward consistently. As long as I could anti-air and headbutt the drive rush, they could not move forward at all, sometimes even cornering themselves waiting for a headbutt to perfect parry. People are right that Honda carries, but not for the reason they think. I believe he carries not because "hur dur specials are plus", but because he exposes other people's weaknesses, and judging by the amount of rage quits or quits after single losses, I think most people don't even care to learn what those weaknesses are.
This 100%. A lot of people don’t know how to approach or apply pressure and become too reactive instead of proactive. That’s where Honda thrives and gets to do whatever he wants. This game is far more than learn some combos and get a hit.
Then they will nerf Handa , then in a year when the community gets better at the game , they will need to buff him again . I’ve seen this cycle a million times in different games lol
Low Diamond and below as Honda is easy asf he’s a scrub killer, but high Diamond/master Honda is tough when playing the top tiers which are mostly bad matchups for Honda. I get the frustration though

I used to main Honda in SF2 and SF4. SF6 Honda is indeed his strongest appearance, HHS is not even a piano input now, back then only few people can do it... I know several people who got him to diamond or platinum by just spamming headbutts and buttslams. heck, even the No 1 Honda does it at times
Honestly it's no different then playing blanka and spaming ball. It's no different then playing rush downs that can cancel 90% of their moves in to DI or DR. It's no different then playing Modern geif and turtling to fish for command grab etc. Every character does have a cheeser strategy it's just can you make it work of if you are going to employ it.
You could get to same rank with other characters with scrub strats... people in the lower ranks dont really know better how to deal with some stuff... Sonic boom + flash kick, blanka balls, anyways... this doesn't work on higher ranks (I've played Honda since ST and now master rank here and I'm loving it)
Imma be honest, blanka Honda and… honestly Kimberly. Are like the 3 outliers, in terms of high diamond low master play Every other character can at least play basic street fighter. But I haven’t seen a Honda that did play like he was carried (yet) maybe that’ll change at like 30k LP or something lmao

Fun fact (not really), LP headbutt is safe against both drive impact and even more perplexing, drive reversal (you literally get a free punish for your opponent attempting). The risk/reward going for a perfect parry is also heavily in Honda's favor since if you mess up and Honda gets a punish counter headbutt, it will out damage your combo since it starts off with 50% scaling.
Another fun fact. Historically Honda headbutt lost to jump back button or a pre-emotive button (in super turbo crouch jabs mashes would be a good pre-emotive button against headbutt)……. Both will get you killed. Perfect parry with 100% accuracy or lose to little Timmy who picked up the game 10 minutes ago
No headbutt is inherently safe from drive impact, it entirely depends on timing. It's a huge mistake to drive reversal anyway, you'd lose 3 to 4 drive bars for a reset to neutral (in the best case scenario) on a -4 special.
18:04 I actually think it's kind of weird that SF6 allows you to rematch on placement matches. It feels to me that the game should force you to play 10 unique players to get the best estimate of your ability. In this video you only played 4 players which I feel is not enough information to accurately gauge the proper ranking. But I do hate playing against Honda myself lol. Your video is making me want to use him. If you can't beat your enemy, join them!
Allowing rematches during placement is fine but I don’t get why it’s only 10 matches in the first place. A bigger sample size means a more accurate placement and matches in sf6 are super quick

The video is dishonest. You did a lot more than headbutt and butt slam. You are a good player, If you played a good character you could have gotten farther. Your other characters actively need buffs and are often #1 and #2 lowest on the pick rates and tier list. You could have done the same and easier with Juri, Ken, and Luke.
Yeah basically this is a big factor. He is really experienced and damn good in all the game's basic mechanics. Of course he does well with stronger moves. But the experience and reactions also carried.
So it's not like some schlub off the street just got Diamond with Honda here. You're a professional content creator with what I'm guessing is Master with at least one character? The game definitely takes other things into account than just the win record. I got 7/10 as Honda and it put me into Plat 4* instead of 5* or Diamond. I already had a Plat 1* Marisa (that I grinded up from Silver) and a Plat 1-2* (I forget which) Zangief (Modern controls for fun). I almost feel like my lower placement in those two kept me from getting Diamond straight away with my Honda since I beat at least 2 Platinum 4* guys in a row at the end of my placement matches. That said, it was my experience playing those other characters and getting used to the game and mechanics that let my Honda be that good. Which is also true for you. It's your experience and being good at the game that gets you that high, not just "character broken." But this video is great content. It will make its rounds among all the hardstuck Gold and below to make excuses why they can't make it out of their rank.
tbh, you should watch where you throw stones, mr glass house lily main. sure honda is a better character, but lily likely is easier to play imo. her gameplan is really really one dimensional and ive seen people with no effort or practice rank her up as well.

I am a total newb in this game, and I guess you are saying you'd have to work harder with other characters. But you definitely were not just using headbutt and you know how to counter. If I had tried the same, that first plat player would have just destroyed me because I wouldn't know when to use the drive as well as you do to get out of situations. You also know punishes etc. I think people with experience do forget how it is for a lot lf us :p
Any character is “op” when you play fighting games nonstop you’re ranking up on new players and even going to diamond at this age of the game was easy to do almost any character could achieve this especially with modern.

New to SF, and I was really interested in playing honda, but i cant lie, the amount of hate one get for playing him really turned me off. I took honda up to plat, and moved on to other characters. I can at least say being on the receiving side that its just that no one wants to actually learn how to fight honda. But it feels like shit to put in time and effort to actually learn a lot with a character and just be constantly told it means nothing and that you arent actually trying.
@lenneth1188 I started in bronze and brought him all the way to plat. Then did the same with dee jay and Kimberly. The only thing it made me realize is that yall suck at labbing, and don't want to try and fight him.

What's funny is that most people will rematch against cheap tactics. Usually someone being cheap will lose after a turn or two. Honda is they go ham with their drive gauge, they want to do all those fancy tricks, showing how well they play the game... then they complain that Honda is stupid and you can't do nothing about his attacks... but in the first place, Honda is THE character that wants you in burnout state, because that's were he's better than pretty much everyone else... Against Honda, you just don't want to be show-off, you want to play solid, be conservative of your gauge, if you're walking forward while Honda's walking backwards, the headbutt is on you, not on the Honda player, because you should know that a Honda holding back is a Honda charging a headbutt 😀 And what about Guile "he's high-tier, so strong, so cool"... wait... I'm Plat 1 right now and the best use of DR I've seen was a Silver Zangief who would drive rush at me, expecting me to throw out an interrupting poke, and then he'd stop short and punish counter me, consistently. No one else I fought is even using drive rush outside of combos rn it's so funny

I'm a diamond gief going on Master, and yes you have to be a bit of a masochist to play gief. Expect to always be half health atleast and know that the comeback is real . U just can't panic and be willing to lose so that u can win
You want to know the secret to beating headbutt?
Stop throwing your games away trying so hard to beat headbutt! Yes, you can perfect parry it or DP it if you're far enough away from honda that you can react, but you're giving yourself an aneurysm trying so hard while the honda is just saying "hee hoo i press the funni button."... and all that distance you're putting between yourself and him is just free real estate for him to walk you into the corner with.
Parry it if you can, but blocking it is fine. Focus on what to do AFTER you block the headbutt: The only things honda can do to you that will really mess you up are huge risks, and if they want to walk back to headbutt you again then walk and block after them or drive rush + low to catch them not watching their toes. Pay attention to what the honda likes to do after headbutt and focus on countering THAT.
The proof is right here in the video, too. The people who had the most success in the matchup were the ones who were playing post-headbutt situation rather than getting hit over and over again trying to stop honda from headbutting.
When I started I went by the rank I got when I played SF5 one month before SF6 launched (bronze). So I won 9/10 and got placed in gold (faced some silvers and golds in the first like 7 rounds).
Climbed all the way to diamond by realizing something pretty simple: People all the way to platinum don't know how to walk forward consistently.
As long as I could anti-air and headbutt the drive rush, they could not move forward at all, sometimes even cornering themselves waiting for a headbutt to perfect parry.
People are right that Honda carries, but not for the reason they think. I believe he carries not because "hur dur specials are plus", but because he exposes other people's weaknesses, and judging by the amount of rage quits or quits after single losses, I think most people don't even care to learn what those weaknesses are.
This 100%. A lot of people don’t know how to approach or apply pressure and become too reactive instead of proactive. That’s where Honda thrives and gets to do whatever he wants. This game is far more than learn some combos and get a hit.

Low Diamond and below as Honda is easy asf he’s a scrub killer, but high Diamond/master Honda is tough when playing the top tiers which are mostly bad matchups for Honda. I get the frustration though

I used to main Honda in SF2 and SF4. SF6 Honda is indeed his strongest appearance, HHS is not even a piano input now, back then only few people can do it... I know several people who got him to diamond or platinum by just spamming headbutts and buttslams. heck, even the No 1 Honda does it at times
Man, a lot of these plat players don't know how to deal with Honda well. Even in Gold a lot of my headbutts get DI'ed and Perfect Parried.

Honestly it's no different then playing blanka and spaming ball. It's no different then playing rush downs that can cancel 90% of their moves in to DI or DR. It's no different then playing Modern geif and turtling to fish for command grab etc. Every character does have a cheeser strategy it's just can you make it work of if you are going to employ it.

But I haven’t seen a Honda that did play like he was carried (yet) maybe that’ll change at like 30k LP or something lmao

Fun fact (not really), LP headbutt is safe against both drive impact and even more perplexing, drive reversal (you literally get a free punish for your opponent attempting). The risk/reward going for a perfect parry is also heavily in Honda's favor since if you mess up and Honda gets a punish counter headbutt, it will out damage your combo since it starts off with 50% scaling.
Another fun fact. Historically Honda headbutt lost to jump back button or a pre-emotive button (in super turbo crouch jabs mashes would be a good pre-emotive button against headbutt)……. Both will get you killed. Perfect parry with 100% accuracy or lose to little Timmy who picked up the game 10 minutes ago
No headbutt is inherently safe from drive impact, it entirely depends on timing. It's a huge mistake to drive reversal anyway, you'd lose 3 to 4 drive bars for a reset to neutral (in the best case scenario) on a -4 special.
18:04 I actually think it's kind of weird that SF6 allows you to rematch on placement matches. It feels to me that the game should force you to play 10 unique players to get the best estimate of your ability. In this video you only played 4 players which I feel is not enough information to accurately gauge the proper ranking.

The ability to adapt to your opponent, or them catching up to your bullshit is an important skill too.
Allowing rematches during placement is fine but I don’t get why it’s only 10 matches in the first place. A bigger sample size means a more accurate placement and matches in sf6 are super quick

The video is dishonest. You did a lot more than headbutt and butt slam. You are a good player, If you played a good character you could have gotten farther. Your other characters actively need buffs and are often #1 and #2 lowest on the pick rates and tier list. You could have done the same and easier with Juri, Ken, and Luke.
Yeah basically this is a big factor. He is really experienced and damn good in all the game's basic mechanics. Of course he does well with stronger moves. But the experience and reactions also carried.

The game definitely takes other things into account than just the win record. I got 7/10 as Honda and it put me into Plat 4* instead of 5* or Diamond. I already had a Plat 1* Marisa (that I grinded up from Silver) and a Plat 1-2* (I forget which) Zangief (Modern controls for fun). I almost feel like my lower placement in those two kept me from getting Diamond straight away with my Honda since I beat at least 2 Platinum 4* guys in a row at the end of my placement matches. That said, it was my experience playing those other characters and getting used to the game and mechanics that let my Honda be that good. Which is also true for you. It's your experience and being good at the game that gets you that high, not just "character broken."
But this video is great content. It will make its rounds among all the hardstuck Gold and below to make excuses why they can't make it out of their rank.
tbh, you should watch where you throw stones, mr glass house lily main. sure honda is a better character, but lily likely is easier to play imo. her gameplan is really really one dimensional and ive seen people with no effort or practice rank her up as well.

I am a total newb in this game, and I guess you are saying you'd have to work harder with other characters. But you definitely were not just using headbutt and you know how to counter. If I had tried the same, that first plat player would have just destroyed me because I wouldn't know when to use the drive as well as you do to get out of situations. You also know punishes etc. I think people with experience do forget how it is for a lot lf us :p

Being able to antiair, putting together the small combos he could, he figured out comboing into the super, upping the pressure when they were burnt out, changing the game plan when they were reacting to the headbutt, his defense. New to SF, and I was really interested in playing honda, but i cant lie, the amount of hate one get for playing him really turned me off. I took honda up to plat, and moved on to other characters. I can at least say being on the receiving side that its just that no one wants to actually learn how to fight honda. But it feels like shit to put in time and effort to actually learn a lot with a character and just be constantly told it means nothing and that you arent actually trying.
@lenneth1188 I started in bronze and brought him all the way to plat. Then did the same with dee jay and Kimberly. The only thing it made me realize is that yall suck at labbing, and don't want to try and fight him.

Honestly, I love every character in this game, and would play nearly all of them if I had the time- it's just nutty to me that a single month after launch, people are screaming and crying about any character instead of looking answers.

What's funny is that most people will rematch against cheap tactics. Usually someone being cheap will lose after a turn or two. The problem is that if Honda tricks don't work on someone, they are still literally fighting you with game sense. You clutched up if the tech tricks weren't working.

Honda is they go ham with their drive gauge, they want to do all those fancy tricks, showing how well they play the game... then they complain that Honda is stupid and you can't do nothing about his attacks... but in the first place, Honda is THE character that wants you in burnout state, because that's were he's better than pretty much everyone else...
Against Honda, you just don't want to be show-off, you want to play solid, be conservative of your gauge, if you're walking forward while Honda's walking backwards, the headbutt is on you, not on the Honda player, because you should know that a Honda holding back is a Honda charging a headbutt 😀

In fact, all characters has some kind of braindead technique that can bring them to Platinum easy peasy... for seasoned/good players, Platinum is pretty much where the real game starts, before that, you're just steamrolling beginners/light players, who shouldn't complain, because the truth isn't that headbutt is too powerful, but that you're doing nothing to figure it out 🙂
