Free ‘Butterfly Bush’ plants, Hardwood cuttings & what you need to know! (Buddleia Davidii)

- November - early March is a fantastic time to take hardwood cuttings! In this video I'm using Buddleia Davidii 'butterfly bush' but this method can be used on other shrubs like Cornus, Forsythia, Hydrangea, Philadelphus, Roses etc.
Filmed February 2023 this task took me about an hour from cutting the material from the parent plant, cutting to size & potting them up. They will get water throughout the year, but I won't pot them on to at least October 2023 or even March 2024. I counted 43 in total & I estimate at least 35 will be successful if not them all, Buddleia is very easy to propagate I don't even use rooting hormone.
Ideal if you're gardening on a budget like myself or just want to make more of your favourite plants! Resist the temptation to pot them up sooner even if you see roots and leaves during Spring/summer, the moment you disturb them in a period of growth can result in you killing the cutting.
I potted them in a sandy free draining mixture, cuttings aren't fussy they don't need high nutritional value at this stage & compost is equally just as good.

I’m in the mountains of North Carolina USA - but all the best garden UA-camrs are out your way 😉. We can (rarely) get as low as -17C for brief times in winter. Trying to figure out how to overwinter them in this case. They are hardy here, but sometimes get frozen back to the ground. I may try a makeshift low tunnel. Thanks so much for your reply.
Thank you so much for making this video. Buddleia are my most favorite plant and I've always grown them in my garden, although now in pots as I have retired and have a small apartment garden here in Puyallup Washington in the USA. I am delighted to see how to propagate them from cuttings as well as the other shrubs that you mentioned. Formerly, I was a garden designer focusing on gardens that will attract butterflies, so Buddleia Davidii was the dominant plant for that. Thanks again!💜🦋

im a new gardener (its my third year!) and have always found cuttings really intimidating so this is super super helpful, thank you for the clear instructions, will definitely be following them moving forward! i took cuttings of a rose of sharon in november and was successful, but did exactly what you said -- tipped them out and potted them on wayyyy too soon. its not lookin good for the to be honest, but any tips for giving them the best chance at revival?

Honestly just hold out and see - there might be a delayed settling in period because they were moved to early, it really is just a waiting game to know unfortunately - when you see more new growth you'll know there establishing
Thanks for sharing such great tips. I'm a new gardener and last year, I trimmed it using the wrong method, so it didn't grow back. I will use your advice and replant them again. I was just wondering if you had any recommendations for the soil or if I should just use regular compost. Thanks again.
Hey! I've sometimes in the past mixed compost & builders sand together to cut costs rather than just compost on its own! But yeah regular compost is fine - noting to rich the medium at this stage is only a vessel the cuttings not actually require nutrition until roots develop

What you need to know is that budleas are very invasive in UK and destructive to roofs and chimneys and brick walls. I have been keeping them in check throughout entire neighborhood. Ever since one destroyed the garage roof of the neighbour. One popped up on the top of the our brick wall.
I am aware ☺️ with annual pruning I can keep them in check, but I agree they can self seed in random or unwanted places!
