Garden Paddy’s on tour 2024
A synopsis oversight of Garden Paddy's on Tour 2024, but firstly a massive thank you to Greenacresni For organising & planning the logistics of this trip - with strategic & foolish shopping decisions, spurred on by each other we have returned home with an amazing collection of plants & inspiration from three incredible gardens! 🛒🪴
Day 1
Our day started with a visit to Mount Venus Nursery, & honestly WOW! A walled nursery with gravel paths, soft planting areas blurring the boundary, wonderful enthusiastic staff & a range of plants that got us so excited I nearly needed an oxygen mask! Some plants I've not seen in years some I've never even heard off! 🤤
Later that morning we visited Hunting Brook Garden, the last time I was here was 2019, it was fantastic to catch up with Jimi & of course Doris 🐶 again, a fabulous kaleidoscopic burst of colour as always the only unfortunate thing is I cannot transport the aroma of the lilies from this post they were just incredible & makes you realise the importance of scent in a garden we can't experience on socials.
A pit stop for lunch at Johnstown garden centre may have led to some additional purchases! 🔎🛒 Not featured in this video as I left the camera in the car, but I don't think I've ever seen a more efficient clean flawless garden centre which such an variety of plants for every taste & garden profile!
Our last stop on Day 1 was Gash Gardens This garden - I have no words!! Honestly, no words, Voyage of Discovery! Was never a better description for a location, garden room after room laid out with cleaver hedging paths and island beds, & when you think it stops it then offers another room, it is the garden that keeps on giving, what Mary & Ross have achieved here is astonishing & Ross's passion for this space is so energising!
Day 2!
Leaving Co.Laois & making our way to Caherhurley nursery, this has been on both our bucket lists for some time, I've done a mail order with the team before but my first in person experience to visit. Gert is an inspiration to anyone having a nursery here in the rugged Co.Clare landscape has some extreme challenges, this is a rear plant lovers paradise, meeting Kate and Coco 🐶 was great, we both left with two baskets each & already planning a return for 2025 because there was so much choice we were bamboozled with options! 🪴
The last leg of the trip took us to Caher Bridge garden in the Burren of Co. Clare, if you want to see a garden in a very difficult location this is the one for you! Carl is working in one of the most exposed locations I've ever come across you could argue it's an intergalactic landscape, creating shelter belts with Hazel & Hawthorn, limited most of the planting to foliage or white floral only & not to mention very restrictive depths of topsoil over the last 20+ years he's made raised bed and brought topsoil to the location on an incredible steep sloping site, we both walked away speechless & rearing with enthusiasm, labour of love, passion & mindset made this garden & it's such a credit to Carl his dad & friend Mikey who made this location possible.
X3 different gardens
X3 different nurseries or garden centres
Paddys on tour return home to Mid Ulster with a great selection of plants, inspiration, new garden friends, enthusiasm & good craic had! Until next time, it's time to get the spades out! 🪴

EDIT: Scratch that - you answered it in the video 😊 - HELP, 😂😂 - I got fresh cuttings 2 days ago and put them in water, in garage. I knew I couldn’t do anything with them until today. Wellll, over those last two days, we had sudden 100+ degrees PLUS humidity. Today as an example - weather Station says it’s 93 out, but with 53% humidity, it says temp feels like 114!!! Anyways, so while in water and I only two days - all leaves died. I was thinking a humidity dome but then realized they surely don’t need that with our humidity this high 😂 Suggestions?? 😢

I took some cuts off a small butterfly bush. About 6-8” in length. I put them in an EZ Cloners and they have developed roots. The roots are probably As long or longer than the cut itself. I believe they are ready to transplant into a medium. What should I use that would yield these clones the highest rate of success? Any advice? Thanks!

It's pretty, but I think people are frightened of it because it very much resembles poison hemlock. To the untrained eye, it's terrifying.

Yes, I will never eat foraged plants of the carrot family unless I'm starving. I just don't trust it and won't take the risk. Won't eat fugu either, even though they have very well-trained people to prepare it. Just no taste is worth even a 1 in million risk for me. That said, while I wouldn't consume it, if it's native and not invasive like hedge parsley, I wouldn't take it down unless necessary, as I'm fairly confident I can distinguish it from the water hemlocks and poison hemlock, just not so confident that I would taste it.

The biggest mistake peoples make with gardens is the architecture or hardscaping in the first place... Those massive drive ways right up to the door are usually unnecessary and really work against the atmosphere peoples then want to create with landscaping

I love everything Irish and your lovely accent and the Irish vibe. Presumably you are in lovely Ireland? If not, bless ya for bringing us your lovely accent and charming Emerald Isle manner anyway! Apart from loving the Irish accent and Zero Zero Guinness, another thing I adore is listening to Gardener's Question Time on BBC Radio 4, but last time I heard the radio programme panel discussing hedges they seemed to hate cherry laurel just as much as you do. However, I've gone for cherry laurel round my garden because it is very cheap, tough and fast growing. I bought the smallest cheapest plants and after a couple of three years they are now almost a full grown hedge. You've also done a bit of yew around your garden, which is a great idea, however, even more expensive than beech, and takes even longer to establish. In fact, yew is extremely slow growing. However, indeed, the deciduous beech is great because it is a tree and so you can have a hugely high hedge - eventually as tall as a full grown beech tree - if the neighbours and laws of obstruction allow - but they are either extremely expensive or take years to establish. But, while if I had more money I might have gone for deciduous beech or evergreen yew, I actually really like my poor person's cherry laurel, zero problems with yellowing leaves, and in a short time it is making my garden look so much smarter, while I don't have to worry about the expense of a new garden fence and it certainly won't die from drought. And, you asked, "Why wouldn't you want seasonality?" That comes with the wonderful copper leaves of beech. Beech are a very wonderful autumnal plant but apart from the autumnal splendour of beech leaves the British Isles do look dreadfully scrubby for about six months of the year when the garden shrubs and trees don't have their deciduous leaves. Thus I am working towards a lush winter green around the house for an all year vibrancy. This evergreen vibrancy can come with a huge variety of shapes and colours of coniferous plants or with mixtures of such plants as camellias or, yes, your hated cherry laurel. If you have more money and time apparently there are tall varieties of camellias that can create a whole new world of camellia hedging? But, if you are happy with deciduous, what about a Japanese a flowering cherry hedge? With Autumn leaves and Spring blossom? This might need a combination hedge creative solution? As the lower cheery tree trunks will need a low under hedge, thus you could have a low beech, yew, camellia or - dare I say it - cherry laurel hedge under a higher blossoming cherry hedge? Anyway, bless ya for a nice introduction to hedging and for showing us your fab developing garden. Enjoyed the vibe!
