Rock critics are notoriously snobbish and usually wrong. I remember in the 60’s when they utterly trashed Led Zeppelin for example. They really hated Creed. Suspiciously spiritual, too much melody , Scott’s voice was seen as too melodious and on pitch, what can I say?
When this first came out, my son (7 y/o at the time) was going around the house singing, "My Sack of Flies". I still can't listen to this song without smiling.
“This song - and I think you can see it in the video - is essentially talking about coming out of the throes of a dark period in your life, whether that be a dark depression or a period of substance abuse or alcoholism, and then reconnecting with yourself. And what you see in the video is a version of me in a boat and then also a drowning version of me pulling myself out from underneath the water into the boat - and I think that really captures what the song means. It’s coming from the darkness back into clarity, coming from the gates of death back into life" Scott Stapp
The accent is southern from Tallahassee Florida. Taught to sing in choir at his father's church. Saw them at Floyd's a bar in Tallahassee before they made it big. You could tell they were headed for big things.
Here's an important context a lot of people don't know. This song is about addiction. It's from the point of view of someone in recovery. The drug is his old friend. He's remmebering how when he got high, he was free, he was careless, he believed , he flew above all the others. His sacrifice? Giving that feeling up. Listen to the whole song with that context in mind and it hits totally different and hits HARD.
Yeah Scott Stapp has stated the song is about reconnecting with yourself. Your old self after a dark period in your life with depression or substance abuse. He then went on to talk about his own substance abuse and reconnecting with old self.
My older sister had a random burnt CD filled with Creed songs. I loved listening to it. From the guitar go the bass. I love their song called "My Own Prison". I had no clue that people at the time dog piled them like they do Nickleback. I was disconnected from what the outside world thought of them.
It doesn't make sense to me, either. I saw them a few years back, mainly as a casual fan. I was there mainly to see their opening band-RED. But stayed for Creed, and they were terrific. And their fans were really IN to them, too.
Good morning, Britt! Keep the Creed coming. I followed them from the start and think they’re such a great band. Hope you have the day you deserve. 😊 Just wanted to add there are a lot of biblical and/or spiritual references in Creed’s songs. Scott came from a very religious background and he sings about struggles with faith. The part where he pulls himself into the boat reminds me of where the Bible talks about are we not to be “fishers of men?” Just my thoughts.
A few songs I'd love to see in the future are "My Own Prison", "Whats This Life For" and "One". They are from their debut album and I instantly fell in love with the band. Loving your reacions!
The vocal intonations are influenced by Grunge (See Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots) . This band, believe it or not, is highly maligned by many. I saw them live and they killed it. "Are You Ready," and "What If" off Human Clay are two of my fav.s

One of my favorite bands. There sounds is unique. The songs come from the souls and they can rock it hard . They are so hard to describe. Creed is an experience.
There are a couple of narratives on what this song is about. Addiction is one. Fighting for faith is another. For me it's the comfort you have in the memories of those you lost who you've loved, and cannot wait to see again. The intro is like a reunion in heaven, or in your heart through memories, or even as you visit the gravesite of a loved one. The most perfect love you can give to somebody is kindness, togetherness, compassion. And one day we will fly above all the others in the heavens, as angels, finding comfort in your presence again. Until then I have memories to keep me comfort, of all those times we shared, until in an instant in life, we are forced to part ways. Definitely wish to say hello again. And what you would be forced to sacrifice is a piece of yourself just so you could move on. It speaks to me in this instance because I have lost parents, siblings, close friends. I've lost almost everybody. It always will hurt. But for the sake of honor, we must continue to make their memories flourish in life, by sharing their love joys and ambition across the world. In the manner of faith it speaks volumes to me because I struggle daily with faith. Faith is the justification and purpose behind the will of living, loving, and evolving as an individual and as a people.
*(Creed) blew up in the late 90s early 2000 & then broke up (Scott Stapp) the lead singer went his own way & the rest of band created a new band called (Alter Bridge)*
Yes, your sacrifice, just say hello, will set us free and save us from the deep and we will take wing and fly above all the rest 🙏🙏🙏❤️🔥❤️🔥🙏🙏🙏 maybe the song is about letting go of the past, this will rescue him from the deep water and bring him into the boat of salvation, and as a blind man, not being able to see what the future holds but getting up and walking with faith into the future, knowing that there is a better life for him there, thats what came to my mind's eye 👁
Yes! More Creed please. This one is about his addiction and reuniting with his old self and finding inner piece everytime. But also about falling and getting back up over n over again 😞. Please listen to some from their first album MY OWN PRISON. Ode and Torn are my personal favorites
Scott Stapp (the leadsinger) stated that the meaning of this song's lyrics was about his own personal struggles with battling substance abuse, addiction and alcoholism and failing despite his best efforts, and him coming to terms with his inability to stay on the straight and narrow. Scott Stapp also explained that this song is about coming out of a dark place or period in your life and reconnecting with yourself.
Britt, I loved Creed the first time I heard them on the radio.. and the song was "My Own Prison". I have seen them live before they broke up and they were great. I know what the meaning of the song is about according to the lead singer who stated it was about his battle with addiction. However, you can take the lyrics in a religious direction and his "Sacrifice" could be Jesus and he states when he returns they will fly above all the others (the resurrection), "Hello my friend we meet again" its been a while... The only reason I bring this up because the lead singers father was a minister and many of the undertones of the first album dealt with religious themes. Just thought it was interesting. You should react to the song I mentioned above I think you would find it interesting.
The lead singer Scott was questioning his belief in God. That’s where the phrase come from. Hello my old friend we meet again it’s about God, behind the music show did one on creed check it out.
*It's essentially talking about coming out of the throes of a dark period in your life, whether that be a dark depression or a period of substance abuse or alcoholism, and then reconnecting with yourself.*
creed has so many songs that i absolutely love and grew up with that on one has reacted to. it's up to the reactors to pick up on that. at this point it's still a wide open market, so few competitors.
It seems obvious to me that most of the song is him singing to God. If you listen to the song with that perspective, it makes a lot of sense. Notice the dove at the end and him constantly looking up to Heaven. When you are with me, I'm free. I'm careless. I believe. Above all the others, we'll fly. This brings tears to my eyes.

I'm not a religious man, but I am a fan of songs with good messages. That's why I tend to love Christian rock. You should check out the band Skillet as well. Another Christian rock band with great messages in their music. And a kick ass female drummer/vocalist as well. I would suggest Awake and Alive as a good intro to them.
@@johnsonwilliam1023 Scott has a narrow definition of Christian rock. One that Creed does not fit. In Scotts definition, Christian rock is explicitly to convert listeners. That would exclude many bands that are considered, or even consider themselves, Christian rock. Creed made music exploring Christian themes with Christian imagery and lyrics. Not all of their music, granted, but I still hold that their biggest hits fit the Christian rock genre.
Creed is not Christian rock… it’s rock. They never were Christian rock but the media decided they wanted them to be THAT and brainwash the public into believing that they were.
@@RushfanDave Stop with this bullshit. Scott said over and over again that Creed was never a Christian band. So for fucks sake stop it. You WANT them to be a Christian band, but they were NOT. It doesn’t get any simpler. Accept the reality or get lost in delusion. Your choice.

You should check out Scott's new duet with Dorothy on "If These Walls Could Talk". Both of their vocals are extremely powerful. It is sorely under-rated and under-appreciated right now.
A lot of people thought that Creed was a Christian band for quite a while because of songs like this. Scott Stapp was largely referring to his relationship with Christ in this song and longing for the relationship he had once had with Him in his younger years. The rest of the band did not share in his beliefs and it was often an issue of contention within the band. He was given a lot of freedom where lyrics were concerned. He ended up doing some Christian music after the band broke up and they became Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy as the new lead singer.
It's supposedly about addiction. "It feels so good to reunite within yourself and within your mind." - You lose yourself and it's not peaceful when you have an addiction problem. But when you sacrifice the addiction and everything that keeps you in that addiction, you can "reunite within yourself and within your mind" and finally be "free". Which is also evident by the symbolism of him pulling himself out of the water and into the boat, saving himself from drowning. At least, that's my interpretation of this song in the context of addiction.
It's a reflection of the old mans journey, with a religious theme. The people of the world, represented by the ones in the water going about life as usual are drowning yet do not realize it. The strict religious monks going by in a boat, presumably safe, the teenagers playfully jumping off the car into the water toying with life, sort of in between where they are heading. The girl reaching out to him, yet he couldn't save her only she could do that. He, of course is in the boat, saving himself represented by pulling himself out of the water, the younger children playing ball all out of the water. The fish people swimming by, affected by none of this.. The man fishing, kissing his catch, drowning unaware, as the young version of the old man looks on in the boat..
Stapp’s christian upbringing is in all his work. The water is symbolic of being baptized into Christ through a recovery from addiction! The best Christian, non Christian band ever. Stapp said they weren’t a Christian band and that may be true, but you can’t miss the connections with his faith.
The lead singers sort of vocal style comes from Grunge like bands like Alice in Chains where you could definitely hear sort of the vocal style from the early 90s to the mid 90s this is post grunge and alot of us that was there when grunge broke we didn't really get into the post grunge bands because it just wasn't a thing for us at least that's what the sentiment was back then but Creed had some good songs though .
Fun fact. bert kreischer claims to be part of this band before sleeveless ball bearing necklace soul patch dude joined, and he got ousted. Florida, Continental United States.
To me the meaning of the song is right in the title. Who gave the biggest sacrifice? Jesus. Who is the friend he hasn’t spoken to in awhile? Jesus. When he goes back to Jesus he is free he believes. Anyone with a spiritual connection to God understands that it is indescribable and special.

Well Britt if you enjoy range in a singers voice then you should check out Alter Bridge. That band is the drummer , guitar & bass players of Creed with a different singer named Myles Kennedy. Creed's singer Scott Stapp went through a period of substance abuse issues & at one point was living in his car. The band found a new singer in Myles and renamed the band Alter Bridge. Scott overcame his demons , regained his faith & did a reunion album with his former band mates. It took awhile for him to get his voice back up to par. He's released a solo album & through it all his wife stuck by him & helped him pull through it all. He's not shy to talk about it as there are some good interviews with him on UA-cam. When checking out Alter Bridge i suggest starting with Watch Over You then try Blackbird. With Watch Over You do the official video , i think it sounds better than the live versions.
Kinda prophetic because his life went downhill quickly a couple of years later, he got strung out and lost everything there’s lots of crazy stories about him one I can’t remember the details of but involved a balcony
When you are singing everything through the consonant 'r', you've found grunge. Just shape your mouth like you are going to pronounce 'ahrrrr' like a pirate, then sing the whole song.
He is folding to Jesus and for for having Jesus with him through the journey of life and when he pulled himself from the water you have to save and free yourself and when he hugged himself in his younger self of time in need....
Love this band I don't care what people say about them, they were awesome in concert.
The band was great but the lead singer was a bit toxic. I like alter bridge better. Same band, new singer

They are not Christian rock Scott will attest to that
@@johnsonwilliam1023 Granted! But we could dig what they were doing…
Your hair looks beautiful!
Wow, you have a lovely voice!
You need to check out the split off band from creed called alter bridge
Do you like that guitar at the beginning? The key to getting that unique and beautiful sound is alternate tunings.
I remember watching the wwe commercials with this song to try to prevent people from trying wrestling at home. Awesome reaction.
Scott Stapp was homeless not to long ago. He came out of it. The band is together again
Its about a relationship with Christ, He is our sacrifice.

From the Heart!
Transdermal Celebration (Cover)
People forget that Creed was a Gospel band
I think his vocals are fine he's just a victim of the 90's where that type of style was popular, but this is my favorite Creed song
Higher!!!
@_Miss_brittreacts. Higher is one of my favorites by them. My Own Prison is another. Thrn there's What If. 😊
Banger! 🔥
Kinda prophetic because his life went downhill quickly a couple of years later, he got strung out and lost everything there’s lots of crazy stories about him one I can’t remember the details of but involved a balcony
That accent is Southern America or Florida to be more precise! 🔥
His name is Scott Stapp.
creed is a christian group as well everything has a hidden meaning in there songs
😂😂😂😂😂😂the accent!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
When you are singing everything through the consonant 'r', you've found grunge. Just shape your mouth like you are going to pronounce 'ahrrrr' like a pirate, then sing the whole song.
Check out higher-creed.
You get more adorable every reaction
This is his love letter to Jesus❤
😎👍
You should do review on for king and county n song is proof of your love
now, you should try to listen to "like a stone" from Audioslave. you'd be goosed!
He is folding to Jesus and for for having Jesus with him through the journey of life and when he pulled himself from the water you have to save and free yourself and when he hugged himself in his younger self of time in need....
5:09 "Fisher of men"?
Please do a reaction wearing the hat hanging up behind you. I'm sure you would look adorable!😊
I look at this song. About him talking about Jesus
