This was the band that really transitioned everything from grunge back to rock. They dominated the charts and put out some awesome music. The critics and snobby music fans absolutely loved to hate them at every turn especially since their lyrics have a lot of religious/christian influence. Their music will stand the test of time, and it's great to see people who have never heard of them get blown away. As a live music fan who has seen probably close to 100 different acts that have been on the charts/radio, they always put on a great show.

Scott Stapp did use a ton of spiritual/religious references in his lyrics, but that's just a reflection of his upbringing and partially of his outlook. They've outright stated though that they aren't a Christian band.

You should do "Arms Wide Open". Scott Stapp (the lead vocalist) wrote it when he found out his wife was pregnant with their first child. It is a beautiful power ballad... Having just had your son I think you will particularly appreciate it.
Edit: Creed had a sound to them... if you liked one of their songs you'd like their whole album. I ate up all three of their first albums... Then after they finished their tour for the third album they didn't do anything for a year and finally announced they had broke up. They got back together 5 years later and produced a 4th album. I can't say that I'm very familiar with that album. I should go back and check it out... Thanks for reminding me of them... 😄

There are two bands that a lot of people constantly hate on that I really love...and that's Creed and Nickelback. I always loved this song and felt it was something of an anthem. Lead singer Scott Stapp stated that the meaning of the song lyrics were about his own personal struggles with battling substance abuse, addiction and alcoholism and failing despite his best efforts, and him coming to terms with his inability to stay on the straight and narrow. Stapp also explains that the song is about coming out of a dark place or period in your life and reconnecting with yourself. He notes several of the songs lyrical themes are represented through elements in the music video. These include a shot of himself in a rowboat where he is seen pulling a drowning version of himself out of the water onto the boat, which represents periods of his life where he would claim sobriety, coming out from the darkness and finding temporary clarity, only to fall back into his old habits. He also mentions that the shots of other people in the video are representative of the feelings you have when you are with someone you love. In 2004 this band, one of my favorites ever, disbanded, with Stapp leaving the band and the other members replacing him with new Lead Miles Kennedy and forming the new band Alter Bridge...my new and even more favorite band. You need to do them next. Also if you want some more Creed, do the song HIGHER.

He formed Alter bridge after Creed called it quits and he has an AMAZING Solo project Hard rock/Metal Named, Tremonti. The man never disappoints with his Talent. They released this after 9/11 and the entire album was incredible, it helped me from going from being fearful to having courage and faith in America again, that we would survive and this was especially meaningful after the sacrifices of Flight 77 in giving their lives to protect Americans in DC after the Towers and Pentagon had already been hit!
Scott Stapp is the lead singer and songwriter. An incredible voice and a major reason CREED got as big as they did. The band later tried going without him, but they never had the same success without him that they did with him.

Their biggest song, that still makes me cry to this day, is ARMS WIDE OPEN. It's a song dedicated to the news of when he found out he was going to be a father.
Get your tissues, because it will get you. It's so loving and beautiful.
They can be labeled alternative Rock. Adult contemporary Rock, Ballad Rock or loosely categorized into Christian rock, because the lyrics are clean enough and have a spiritual undertone for faith, and struggle with overcoming bad things in their lives, like drug abuse, depression and etc..
    Big 90's band.

I absolutely love Creed. When their second album "Human Clay" hit, I was at the record store (remember those) so early they hadn't even unpacked the boxes. They had to go get me the CD from the back room. A lot of people called them a Christian band, but they weren't really. The lead singer, Scott Stapp, was just brought up in a very religious household and wrote about what he knew. I saw them in concert once, and I'd have to say that Stapp poured more effort and emotion into every song than any of the other 60-70 lead singers I've seen. He may have been a jerk off stage, but he sure put in the effort on stage.
There are two of their songs that you should definitely check out, both from that previously mentioned second album. First is "Higher." It was at number one on both the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts for 17 weeks, which was a record at the time. And as parents, you will definitely want to check out their ballad, "With Arms Wide Open." You might actually shed some tears over that one.
The band fell apart when the rest of the band got tired of dealing with the lead singer. The original guitarist, drummer, and bass player formed another band, Alter Bridge, with lead singer Myles Kennedy. Myles is also the lead singer for Slash, when Slash isn't off playing with Guns 'n Roses. Check out their song, "Isolation" if you really want to rock out. The guitarist, Mark Tremonti, has also formed a solo project called Tremonti, that plays some much heavier music. Also, since the breakup, Stapp has sobered up and released a few solo albums that are worth checking out.
Basically, Creed is one of those bands that can really drag you down the rabbit hole. They have had several great songs of their own, and the band members have gone on to do other worthwhile projects, often with other musicians who are also worth checking out. You could spend a month reacting just to Creed and all the other musicians they're connected to.

This song came out when I started to date my wife. Obviously, back then there wasn't anything besides CDs. I had a Jeep that I had those CD controls on the steering wheel and kept playing this when I was with my future wife. Those words really felt how the two of us felt together.
Weird time in history cause it was just after the awful events of 9/11 and I was chopping to a SOF command. Needless to say. the next year was wild but this song kept us grounded and she knew, like I did, that when I was with her I was feel and careless. I deployed down range a year later to the giant sand box and this song got me through that incredible journey. I'll always love this song. Glad yall loved it.

@@RyanHeafner Until Creed got super popular people who were into that genre/sphere of music thought they were into something special with Creed because the lyrics were so obviously fantastic. The irony for me is, I couldn't stand that genre in general, hated the sound, especially the distorted vocals - like someone singing with marshmallows or chewing tobacco packed in their cheeks or lips - and I eventually came around to loving their music. For years I couldn't get past that sound to appreciate the lyrics. But Creed grew on me over time. Finally my girlfriend and future wife bought tickets for us to see them (in their last year of popularity). Also ironic, she bought the tickets as a surprise because she knew they were popular and playing in our city and she thought I liked them, despite me never saying anything about them. I loved seeing them live and it tipped the scales turning me into a fan. Stapp was a bit affected, constantly singing to the video cameras, but otherwise a great experience. And, I might add, it was the most positive and wholesome audience I've ever been around at a big concert venue like that, and I've been to a few.

Holy WOW you guys have taken me back with this one. There was a very brief period in my early 20s where I attended a super fundamentalist Assemblies of God church, where we didn’t consume any secular media. Our college group collectively decided Creed was okay because the band members were Christian and the song themes were Christian-adjacent (whatever that means) so my friends and I basically became super fans. Even went to their concert though tickets were expensive for us. And then when I stopped going to church, I don’t think I listened to a song of theirs again, so it’s probably been a good 15 years since I’ve heard this-I couldn’t even remember the melody. I think they’re considered post-grunge or maybe even nu-metal and have some bangers, damn what the critics said back then. “With Arms Wide Open” was written when Scott Stapp found out his wife was pregnant and is a beautiful slower song, “One Last Breath,” and “My Own Prison,” were also popular, but my favorite was always “Higher.” Thank you for reminding me of them!

Creed is an awesome band. My favorite song is "Higher". Scott Stapp is a great vocalist, and Mark Tremonti is one of the best rock guitarists ever. So, when Creed broke up, the rest of the band hired a new vocalist, Miles Kennedy, and formed a new band called Alter Bridge. Miles is a top tier vocalist and guitarist, and Mark actually added a lot more lead playing to their songs. If you are interested in checking them out, I would recommend a live version of "Blackbird". I think you'll be absolutely blown away by that song and want to dive into Alter Bridge as well.

Creed was of a very certain time…..they, as well as Lifehouse were what were considered by many “undercover Christian rock bands”. When both groups started having radio hits, I didn’t have any immediate feeling of those songs being religiously affiliated, but after their connections to Christian rock were more well-known, I wasn’t surprised. To me, that’s the making of a great song…..a song that can have different meanings to different listeners! Their music is great! They made music that was spiritually significant to them, but made it relatable to everyone. To me, the fact that their songs had multiple layers was a beautiful thing! Lifehouse has so many great songs you would LOVE!!! Hanging By a Moment, You and Me, First Time, Whatever It Takes, Halfway There…..all are AMAZING!!!

Another band that for some reason gets huge pushback from the rock fanbase is Nickleback and I just don't know why because they have had numerous hits from the mid 90s into the 2000s. You might check them out but beware of the negative Nancys.....

When Creed first came out, I was obsessed with them. They have so many great songs. Deep meanings. My Own Prison is a great song. Check it out!!
