20 Harry Potter Character Wands (+ Their Meanings) - Harry Potter Explained

- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing WANDS. Wands are an essential part of any witch or wizards arsenal- an object with which they are able to channel and hone their magical capabilities.
When witches and wizards come of age, and their time finally comes for them to head off to Hogwarts, one of the first places they go in preparation for the school year is Ollivanders. It’s at Ollivander’s: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C., that many witches and wizards are paired with the wand that they will keep for their entire life- the wand that they form a real connection with. As wands are quasi-sentient, they possess the ability to ‘choose the wizard’ rather than the other way around, which is why wands are a very personal item. We know Harry’s wand, and a few others are mentioned, but, what about all of the other characters? In today’s video, I want to break down the wands of 20 Harry Potter characters, and explain what these wands mean.

"Wands are an essential part of any witch's or wizard's arsenal."
Quirrel: *Chuckles* Hold my turban.
Mcgonagalls wand length was normal, she wasn't lacking. It's said that smaller wands are meant for more refined spell casting (like transfiguration, it fits mcgonagall). Abnormally short wands choose someone who is lacking, like umbridges 8 inch wand.
Also I can't remember where is stated that McGonnagal had a small stature. Indeed I've always got the impresion that she was at least a bit tall.
@@ibtiago18 true, she definitely wasn't short
Lucious Malfoy Wand being 18 inches due to the handle fits his personality exactly, always wanting to appear as more important and accomplished than he really was.
The handle would probably be 4 to 5 inches long. Even so, a 13 inch wand is quite respectable.
That wand is an heirloom, isn't it?
freud would have a field day with analysing his wand and his personality LOL
I loved how Voldemort just snapped the handle off lmao
I feel like this video glossed over the wand core when discussing how the wand itself fits with their respective owners. I can understand how the specific woods and the overall length fits their character, but I don't why the core is least likely touched upon, other than knowing what types magic these particular wand cores use and why they do so?
Loved this vid I love Learning about wands
I so badly want to know Severus Snape’s wand core and wood and the meaning behind it, I’m gutted it wasn’t in this 😩
Same
Beechwood and unicorn hair. Twelve inches.
that's the same tree that him and Lily were under and the unicorn hair symbolizes the purity inside of him.
A long wand because he's so talented

Knowing Voldemort's lust for power and desire to be the most powerful wizard in the world. I always thought that outside of plot convenience, there was really no reason he should have been given a wand with a phoenix feather instead of dragon heartstring as it's core, which I honestly believe matches his personality better.
Fully agreed .
But phoenix feather wands are often capable of widest range of magic. Voldemort wanted to learn all about magic, which he claimed he did, but he never understood love. Phoenix feather wands are also rarer and are hard to place.
Voldemort wanted to be separate and notorious, he didn’t like things that made him ordinary he even disliked his own name because “there are a lot of toms” so I think his wand having the rarest core type is actually quite fitting.
@@DS-jh3ic yep, i agree
Like a Phoenix he fell (burned) and was reborn.
Hermiones dragon heartstring being temperamental is a good contrast to her type A personality. She keeps it in check
Interestingly, Voldemort and Harry both had phoenix-feather wand cores, and Voldemort and Ginny both had Yew wands.
Not gonna lie I feel a little click bait with the title card having snaps on the cover and nothing talking about his wand
Keep up the videos
Sadly, we don't know anything about his wand
@@maksimilian528 I understand what your saying but as a person who didn’t know that and click the video because snap was on the title and I wanted to know this is still click bate
@@massmaritimeexperience7779 yes, i understand. Can't deny that it was a clickbait
I sometimes wonder if Hagrid's wand isn't actually broken, that its just embedded into the tip of his umbrella intact, similar to how Lucius Malfoy carries his wand in his cane. I think considering how Dumbledore was the owner of the Elder Wand and it has the power to fix broken wands. Maybe Dumbledore used it to fix Hagrid's wand after he was expelled and had his wand broken? Because I don't think Hagrid can still use it to do magic otherwise.
I've wondered this myself. I wonder if JK has ever spoken specifically in regard to Hagrids wand? I think Hagrid was unjustly convicted and I think how would it be to have a Hogwarts professor without a wand? I would love to know.
@@RedNeckBiker109 Yeah
this is very possible, because Dumbledore knew it was Voldemort who opened the Chamber in 1943, and was one of the few who believed that Hagrid was innocent. there's also the bit about Dumbledore trusting Hagrid with his life (for whatever reason). i strongly believe that Dumbledore fixed Hagrid's wand and told him to keep the secret until he was finally proven innocent in 1993.
@@JuanMataCFC I agree with that. It sounds like something Dumbledore would do.
That's been my theory ever since book 7.
Really proud that someone is dedicating a plethora of time to analyze the Harry Potter series_______ Hats off bro! Keep posting
Love these vids! Would love to see you do another one of these, maybe with scorpius malfoy and albus potter?
I absolutely LOVE this channel. I can't get enough..I'm a new subscriber so I'm catching up on old videos!
There is a suggestion that Snape's wand is made of ebony wood, but the core is unknown.
Great video! I definitely love the look of all the Harry Potter and fantastic beast wands!
You didn't tell us about Dumbledore's wand or Severus Snape's wand
But Dumbledores wand is the elder wand so explaining it as his doesn’t technically make sense if ygm
It’s not his original, first wand so it doesn’t really explain what wand picked him back when he was 11 and what it was and why it picked him.
I've been missing these videos
I have really been enjoying your videos, I;m just sorry I didn't find your channel earlier.
Another amazing video as always. My favorite wands
Elder and original ( Dumbledore)
My wand is made out of sycamore wood and unicorn hair core, 9 3/4 in length, slightly springy. I got the result on pottermore and recently I got chosen by a wand with the exact same combination at Ollivanders.
What about Snape's wand?
I don't think JK has ever revealed anything about it, but I would imagine it could be ebony and dragon heart string 🤔
@@Vega_McTavish it just seems misleading that he wasn't mentioned but he's in the thumbnail.
You had me at Troll Whisker
So I’m finishing Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows book and I just realized that Lily Potter/Evans and I have the same birthdays! Thought that was pretty cool!
Future video idea for you:
What are some additional effects of spells. For instance, what else can the patronus spell do other than repel the dementors?
LFG A NEW VIDEO!
Amazing
Fun fact about some wands and the wandcore that they are partner with some of them are stable enough and easy to harmony with and some of them are in a unstable and hard to work with but they are trying their hardest to make their partnership work but it would take them some time to even level to work with so they have got to work hard to find a way to stabilize their partnership only through multiple times of trying and failing they will eventually find the perfect solution to their problems and finally make their partnership work out
what i think the unconfirmed wand of some chara:
-Snape: Blackthorn or Ebony or Willow with Dragon Heartstring
-Flitwick: Aspen with Phoenix feather
-Sprout: Chesnut with Unicorn Hair
-Luna: Beechwood with Phoenix Feather
-Fred & George: Dogwood or Spurce with Unicorn Hair for both
-Crab & Goyle: Blackthorn & Ebony with Dragon Heartstring
-Sirius: Ebony with Phoenix Feather
-Tonks: Spurce or Rowan with Dragon Heartstring
-Arthur: Alder or Rowan or Sycamore with Unicorn Hair
-Molly: Apple or Pear with Unicorn Hair
-Bill: Cypress with Unicorn Hair
-Charlie's 2nd: English Oak or Hornbeam with Unicorn Hair
-Percy: Pine with Dragon Heartstring
-Moody: Aspen or Red Oak with Dragon Heartstring
-Seamus: Dogwood with Dragon Heartstring
-Cho Chang Pear with Phoenix Feather
-Kingsley: Poplar with Phoenix Feather
Love all of the Harry Potter wand from every movie series
Great video! At 7:44 where is that quote from? I'm re-reading the books atm and on the last one. Can't recall that quote anywhere. When does Ollivander say it?
It might be from pottermore
First love the vids btw and I’m getting ur merch
Thanks for the like I really appreciate it
I can't believe how few seem to grasp that hagrid wand, while broken when kicked out of school...
Obviously did not remain broken for long, definitely by the time Harry's informed he's a wizard by hagrid, it's been fixed.
Before you rant about how wands can't fixed, generally that's true but is blatantly false for Dumbledore's/death's wand, since it fixes Harry's wand at the end.
Given we know that Dumbledore has the wand & hagrid is suddenly able to use magic (secretly) with an umbrella. They even go so far as to say the wand is concealed in the umbrella.
It's easy to see that Dumbledore clearly fixed his wand. As for the umbrella, officially he wasn't allowed to carry a wand & we see other build/transfigure wands into other objects; so it makes sense that it's in an umbrella.
Heck, even the fact it is pink is meaningful, given that it's very important to not mix up or forget your umbrella /wand & to have it always readily recognizable as itself, so pink or rescue orange are perfect colors.
Long before the last book, I figured that the wand had to have been fixed for hagrid to be using it. By the time Harry fixed his wand, it was just so blatant it felt like I was being smacked over the head with it.
Yet, it seems that others don't see it. I really hope that others are seeing this because it feels to obvious too be rare.
I'm actually kinda shocked that Harry, Sirius, Moody, and Snape aren't on the list. Might have to make a part 2!
Part 2 to this vid:
Dolores Umbridge
Cornelius Fudge
Rufus Scrimgeour
Severus Snape
Luna Lovegood
Fenrir Greyback
Vincent Crabbe
Gregory Goyle
Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody
Marcus Flint
Cho Chang
Colin Creevey
Sirius Black
James Potter
Lily Potter
Harry Potter
Bill Weasley
Ginny Potter (Weasley)
Madame Pomfrey
Filius Flitwick
We don't have information about 15 character wands in the list you made. We only know Umbridge, Lily, James, Harry and Ginny.
@@maksimilian528 wouldn’t hurt to speculate
@@HasselHoffman-im5he That's true. For example, i imagine Fudges wand would be short, cause he was definitely lacking.
Ollivanders: staying in business since 382 BC by supplying a few dozen wands a year. If he hasn't any local competition, he's got to outfit... a few youngsters if they aren't using hand-me-down wands, and a few adults that need replacements?
Since wizards and witches normally have their wands buried with them in death. This makes me wonder if Ollivander has an outfit of grave robbers who are tasked with breaking into the coffins of the recently deceased to steal their wands, for him to then resell? That would be quite the racket.
Well perhaps some people from other countries know of his reputation and so specifically travel to Diagon Alley to get their wands? Also maybe he has some investments in other businesses and things to also help with income?
We don't reckon that we are becoming more of a potterhead advanced form (😂) watching these videos 🏰
I want Seraphina Picqeury's wand. Being from Louisiana, Swamp Mayhaw with a Rougarou core would fit perfectly.
Are we ever going to figure out Snape's wand? I have a few ideas on the wood but I am almost certain the core is dragon heartstring. Also what if Harry wasn't connected to Voldermort? Would he still possess his Holly and phoenix feather wand?
Just curious did you ever do a video on what spell Kingsley shackle bolt used on the death eater that flew in threw the window. I believe it. Was during the battle for the astronomy tower.
2:04 I read his was actually the longest wand for the same reason; it being 17 inches
Meaningful indeed.
Perhaps you can explain to me why Jo left out the cores when Ollivander gave Harry his parents' wand descriptions
saw snape in the cover but his wand wasn't mentioned in the video
Hey, what of Snape, Dumbadores original wand before he got the Elder wand, or Gine’s
da wand chooses the wizard mr potter
you said that so great
Slughorn’s loyalty wand seems outta pocket to me 😂😂😂
My wand according to pottermore is Elm with dragon heartstring core, 13" unyielding flexibility. I would love to get a real life wand of the same make
i was literally just looking up lucious malfoys wand to see how it felt about being taken by voldemort
Pretty impressive how you gather all of this information. I wonder how much times have you watched the entire Harry Potter movies, I watched it 4 times in the 4 years I know of the wizarding world
The movies have no information
@@mrdr0161 I know, I still wonder
would could do a video on wizards that can turn themselves in to animals like peter Pettigrew and professor McGonigal
Imagine if someone managed to successfully make a staff using three wand cores
Yep, also in a sort of fantasy I created when first read the books and continue expanding whenever I reread them; I did that somewhat. Part of the Fantasy is I am a Muggle-Born Wizard who still lives and learns from my Muggle Parents but a neighbor of mine is a Wizard and sort of mentors/teaches me from around 7 years old how to do magic and things. He crafted a special wand for me and the way the materials chose me is unique to his method of wand crafting. Anyway it's Dragonbone for the "wood" and it's core is; Werewolf Fur, Griffin Feather, and Unicorn Hair specially twisted together.
@@morrigankasa570 Nice .
@@katakurifan5213 The process used is this: In a protected/secured workshop he shows you the various materials, then he watches the materials for a sort of shimmering magical reaction to your presence, then the materials that reacted the best get gathered & form them into the wand.
Out of curiosity what are Luna and Ginny's wands made from - they are my favourite characters
Unfortunately, we don't know what Luna's wand is made of, but Ginny's wand is made of yew, the same wood voldemort had.
Does anyone know the song playing in the background?
Did u realise in the deathly hallows part 2 when Harry Ron hermione draco and goyle in the fighting scene when hermione uses a spell but then if u listen carefully goyle tries to use avada Kadavara!
Why are most wands made with Dragon Heartstrings core but great info on every wand and the owners that own them
Heyyy, what about Lina, Cho, Cedric, Ginny, Fred % George Anderson kita of others?? :(((
It's amazing how rare Phoenix feather Wands are, Celestina is the only other person besides Harry and Voldemort to have one. It seems to me that they're especially picky and independent wands, who are hard pleased when choosing a worthy master.
back on Pottermore it was also revealed that Silvanus Kettleburn who was the professor of Care of Magical Creatures until he retired in 1993 (in harry's third year) and was replaced by Hagrid also had a Phoenix feather core wand: his was Chestnut wood, 11½ inches with Phoenix feather core and wad described as being "Whippy"
Also i think that Doumbeldore first wand had to have a Phoenix feather core...
the fact that he added celestina warbeck's wand 😂
Nevilles wand length is unknown. The replica is 13 inches, but the length is never revealed in the books.
So if it was a handmedown from Charlie wouldn’t that mean it was probably a handmedown to Charlie ? Since ‘the wand’ for a practitioner is unique as far as we know? Or maybe Charlie just has a personality that isn’t as binding to a wand as long as it works?
I'm a real practicing male witch. I make my own wands. My current 1 is maple 16 1/4" with a dove feather core. And to personally link it to me, the dove feather is laced with my blood. The pommel is a cancer zodiac (my zodiac) carm piece from a broken bracelet.
I also have an oak wand, just like Hagrid!
Hiya pal!
I have Redwood wand with a Dragon hair core
- Damn, sure is a hate on for little wand wizards. I always thought a really short wand would be sweet if you could then make it into a ring type thing.
Always wondered why wands are measured in inches instead of centimeters being that Harry Potter is based in the United Kingdom?
Because the wizarding world generally sticks to traditions for far longer than the Muggle world.
Use of exclusively Metric in the UK was a fairly recent development at the time Harry was at Hogwarts. The UK went metric in 1965.
Edit: Technically the changeover still isn't complete; they still use an odd mixup of the two systems
Legend der
My wand is cherry wood dragon heartstring 12 3/4 in slightly yeilding
how did voldemort get his bone wand and whats it made of?
I wonder what dumbldores original wand was
It’s so weird to think about different wands around the world, like in America, magical creatures aren’t a thing. I always wondered what the cores of American wands would be because they don’t have magical creatures like dragons or unicorns.
What about Cedric's wand?
Mine is Acacia wood 13 inches with a dragon heartstring core
Did they ever explain Dumbledore's original wand? Have always been curious.
I think it was also phoenix feather core. Though I could be wrong. I guess we'll have to see when Fantastic Beasts 2 comes out.
@@barbiquearea you're very behind
It's not confirmed but I feel confident that it's ebony wood, 16 inches, with a phoenix feather core.
Ebony wood is best suited to those that are confident being who they are, and those that hold to their personal beliefs no matter who or what pressures them to think otherwise. Both these qualities fit Dumbledore perfectly. Ebony is also particularly adept in all types of combat oriented magic, as well as transfiguration. Dumbledore was incredibly powerful in combat, and was the transfiguration professor at Hogwarts before becoming headmaster, so this fits perfectly as well.
As for the phoenix feather core, while they're not quite as powerful as dragon heartstring cores, they're still very strong. Additionally, they're particularly versatile, being capable of the widest range of magic out of all wand cores. Dumbledore was very knowledgeable about all types of magic, and very skilled in all types as well, so I think it fits nicely. There's also the obvious symbolism with Dumbledore owning a phoenix, and the family legend that a phoenix will always aid a Dumbledore in a time of need.
As for length, I say 16 inches because that's the length of the prop used in the Fantastic Beasts movies, though Dumbledore does truly have a huge, larger than life personality, so it's fitting.
Mine is 10 1/4 inch I believe. Apple wood with a unicorn hair core.
What's your wand wood and core
I'll take the quiz live soon!
My wand according to Pottermore is: 13 and a Half inches long, Blackthorn Wood, and Dragon Heartstring Core.
3:46 Draco is actually using his mother’s wand in this image because Harry was using Draco’s wand at the time.
It makes sense why voldermort got the phenix core becouse his rises again
Why did dobby specifically want to save Harry? Did dobby have relations with people close to Harry before?
I'm also a Slytherin and I've come to that being my final house.
So … ur telling me wormtail has more character than lockhart ? ….. thats mental
Ron is a Pisces and Willow is a Tree associated with Pisces.
Everything dragon heat string core or unicorn hair core.
I wonder about the wand of Ginny Weasley
My Harry Potter wand is made of Hornbeam 😊
60% of this is dragon heartstring 39% unicorn hair and 1% Phoenix feather
What happens to the wands when a witch or wizard dies
Here is a what if,
What if Draco switched sides in Book 7, imagine he comes to the realization that Dumbledore is his best bet to save his family.
