    A similar case with Neville - He has his father's old wand, breaking it at the end of book 6 and getting a new one right before he becomes a badass wizard in book 7.

      innit weird i was just about to say this although doesn't he do alot better during his 5th year when learning from Harry during the DA meetings. I remember he is the one who grows the most during this book so much that when Harry is teaching the DA a certain defensive spell, he is the first one to master it, even beating out Hermione. Neville is never really able to perform magic as well as all the other characters, but it's his bravery and determination to suceed that makes him stronger than most. He stands up to Harry, Ron, and Hermione during their 1st year earning Gryfindor the points to win house cup. He earns respect from some teachers such as professor Sprout for his excellent skill at Herbology, he fights in the battle of the ministry by helping harry fight off death eaters, but he botches his spells and is effective in physically punching a death eater off harry, he helps Ginny and Luna relaunch Dumbledore's Army during his 7th year to protect the students from the carrows and steal the sword of Gryfindor from Snape, (although this ended up failing), he is able to summon the order of the pheonix to fight in the battle of Hogwarts, he stands up to Voldemort and cuts off the head of Nigini by summoning the sword of Gryfindor, something only the bravest Gryfindors can do, giving harry the chance to kill Voldemort.

      Neville's badassness in book 7 is vastly over-estimated. He grows, but really he's a book 2 harry at best.

    • @innitweird861
      @innitweird861 6 років тому +11

      Vince Sergi true, he does gain more confidence but he still isn't very good at actual magic in the Ministry, is he? And his skill in Herbology has nothing to do with wand magic. Maybe it's a credit to his determination that he's the first to learn the spell even with a bad wand. But to be honest, I can't say I remember seeing him do magic in book 7, so maybe his badass-ness is more about self-confidence due to Dumbledore's Army and becoming leader of the resistance at Hogwarts rather than being better at wand magic.

    • @sfsin3380

      he ran a rebel group out of occupied Hogwarts even after his two co-leaders where forced out one of whom was disappeared by the enemy and figured out how to sink supplies in using the room of requirement and smuggle Muggleborns and targeted students out and helped keep the remaining student safe for a year. I'm pretty sure that's more than the entire Order of the Phoenix did in that same time span. how his badassness over-estimated.

    As someone who has a family as large as the Weasly's I'd like to explain why Ron always seems to get the bad hand-me-downs. The oldest normally always gets the new stuff and it gets passed down till it either falls apart or is otherwise no longer able to be used, that generally happens after 4-6 people's worth of use. This is why Ginny generally has new stuff (also contributing to that fact is that shes the only girl so not as many handovers from her brothers). Ron just happens to be right at the end of the line of hand-me-downs along with Fred and George. After Ron I'm going to guess that it is to old to be passed to Ginny in the fact of wands, textbooks, or clothes. Or generally something she wouldn't be forced to wear such as handover school uniforms (sans robe).

    • @miriamrobarts
      @miriamrobarts 3 роки тому +37

      I come from a large family, too & I agree.
      Another factor is that as the older kids in the family start earning their own money &/or moving out of the house, more money is freed up to spend on the youngest kids.
      The musty old robes also could have been something recently found in the back of a closet, or in the attic, or something.
      As for Fred & George, it also could have been one of the following:
      1. There was only one set of old dress robes, so their parents would have to buy another set of dress robes. Since they couldn't really buy one of the the twins new clothes & not the other--they both end up getting new ones.
      2. Fred & George were very entrepreneurial. I'm guessing they started experimenting making their jinxes, gags / joke-items, etc. pretty much as soon as they got their wands. Within a few years, they'd be selling their creations to other students, so they'd have their own spending money for clothes, etc.

    I always thought Ron didn't just inherit Charlie's old wand. Charlie probably got it when their Uncle Bilius died. We know that while it's customary to bury wizards with their wands, it's not unheard of to pass down their wands. Maybe Uncle Bilius dying coincided with Charlie's first year, and he bequeathed his wand to him, knowing that Arthur and Molly would struggle down the line getting all those kids kitted out for Hogwarts. It probably wasn't a great wand for Charlie either, but he made do, so he replaced it as soon as he started making his own money, then passed it down to Ron, hoping, since his middle name is Bilius, he'd be luckier with it. Shame the Weasleys didn't consult with Ollivander about it, who probably would have warned them against it, giving the nature of the wand. Maybe some of the others don't have their own wands either- maybe the twins inherited Molly's twin brothers wands, for example.

    I was disappointed in how Ron was portrayed as pretty much the third wheel in the Movies. In the books, Ron is the one with the most knowledge of wizarding culture and such, not Hermione. Hermione has book smarts, but Ron has a type of wizarding street smarts that serves him well. For example, he's the one who explains the meaning of "Mudblood" in the second book, not Hagrid and Hermione. If you read carefully, Ron's knowledge about wizards and witches is actually very good, as is his knowledge of magic in general. But yes, I agree, he was stunted from the start with the wrong wand. In fact, the majority of Ron's problems is the fact that he has less than ideal equipment.

      Definitely. I like to think as Hermione being the smartest when it comes to magic itself. But Ron is the most strategic and actually intelligent. With him, it's not a matter of holding vast amounts of spell knowledge. But rather he can put things together as he does in chess. But also using street smarts which only comes around if you can actually think and problem solve. People generally don't tell you many things about being street smart. It's generally you discovering it for yourself and doing your own research.

    I read somewhere that Charlie wasn't even the first owner of Ron's first wand -- it was handed down to HIM from their mother, Molly Weasley. Which means that Ron is using a wand that was already losing its zap something like ten years ago, has further depreciated since then, and dislikes him personally. The fact that he EVER gets a spell right is nothing short of miraculous, and the mountain troll thing is arguably as impressive as Harry surviving the Killing Curse as a baby.

    • @nbriggs133

      I think your missing the point on everyone in the trio.
      Hermione is shown as being exceptionally good at memorizing things, but also someone who is very rigid in their thinking and rarely actually thinks logically or comes to her own conclusions. So a certain type of intelligence (one that is great for excelling in school btw) but not exactly the genius she is always characterized as.
      Harry is actually shown to be very intuitive and just naturally adept at many applications of magic. He just isn't much of an academic and thanks to his isolation constantly comes across as the clueless fish-out-of-water in the wizarding world through no real fault of his own. You could also argue his upbringing with the dursley's could have tamped down some of his drive to succeed because we see he has it on certain spells (patronus, etc) but frequently he comes across as nearly as lazy as ron.
      Finally, ron knows quite a bit about the wizarding world, has a strategic mind, and appears to pick things up quite easily when they do interest him (quidditch, flying the car, etc). However, he just so completely lacks a drive to succeed (or self-confidence) that he often comes across as a total idiot despite clearly being capable if he actually cares to be. It's just tough to measure ron's intelligence relative to harry though since he has such a head start in many places with the knowledge of the wizarding world while also rarely putting forward equal effort to harry.

    Given the fact that you said "Nothing more than a peice of wood." I beleive in one of the books its claimed that wizards can channel their magic through anything, but wands help to amplify it.
    This also means that Rons first wand (Charlies old wand) could of performed so badly it gave him confidence issues, making him struggle with magic in the future.

      He also abandons them for petty reasons while adding little except complaints to the search as a whole. If your going to tally ron's "achievements" in book 7 you should at least do so fully and not just cherry pick the good ones. You could even argue the whole saving harry from drowning thing would never have even been necessary had he not abandoned them in the first place as harry likely wouldn't have been alone to try diving in with the horcrux on. As for the horcrux itself its hard to credit ron with that given he only destroyed it because harry offered him the chance and anyone could have managed it.
      Overall, ron certainly isn't useless in the deathly hallows but he is far from being a hero either.

    • @latieraeve
      @latieraeve 6 років тому +38

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому +6

      As soon as he took it off he came right back... a few months later. And yes he did try to return after the snatchers, but when that didn't work out he just sat on his ass the whole time rather than do what he could in the meantime. Also, the other two also wore the necklace and yet it was only ron who left because of it, so it was still a personal weakness of his even if exacerbated by outside forces. As for wearing it the longest it is specifically stated they traded it off equally so please don't try to confuse the issue.
      Again, I don't hate ron and you can come up with extenuating reasons for his behaviour. However he simply doesn't add much of worth in book 7 and does a number of bad things. They all face the same problems and yet its only ron who is constantly complaining and who actually cracks under the pressure. Honestly I blame rowling for that, since his character arc seems like it was moving him past the petty insecurities of the earlier and yet rowling just sends him right back into his previous bad actions for seemingly no reason.

    I'm hazel and phoenix feather.
    I think this video overblows how much better Harry and Hermione were at magic than Ron. Ron is consistently shown to be a (higher-end-of-)average student, so definitely not incapable, and he only scored lower than Harry in one OWL. Also, while Hermione tends to be better in the controlled academic setting, Ron does better her at times in an actual practical setting. There's a difference between studious and smart/capable, and that's a large part of where Ron's character lies. Not to mention the fact that he's basically a year behind in his practical coursework, and he does better than Harry does with wands that didn't choose him. It's true we don't really see any major displays of power from him, but aside from some classroom mishaps (which are to be expected) and splinching (and the worst case was when Hermione was actually apparating), we don't really see much in the way of foul-ups from him either.
    As for why they'd pass that wand on: According to Pottermore, using a borrowed wand tends to work better with someone who has a connection to the borrower, so passing on wands within families seems like it would be something seen as practicable, if not ideal. If I'm remembering Harry's interview with Olivander at Shell Cottage correctly, most wizards know pretty little in regards to wand lore. So I'd assume the Weasleys didn't know that wood and core combination was stubbornly loyal and assumed it wouldn't be an issue to pass on.

He is there for him and yes they did have their fights but this also shows how close they are. He is his best friend. There are slight difference in that case where ron's wand is willingly passed down (given) to him through family, while neville simply ends up with his father's wand despite it never being relinquished by its previous owner. Given how we see that harry is able to use hermione's (willfully given) wand after his is broken with no issues it seems like the different scenarios would lead to ron's wand actually being able to choose to work for him (asides from the materials causing problems as noted in the video) whereas neville's wand would never have "chosen" to work for him.
      All that being said, the wand lore of ownership as laid out in book 7 is confusing and quite frankly contradictory at times and with the other books so my theory there may be completely wrong.

    As someone who has seen the 'Large Family' mechanics in person, I can attest that it often goes like this. My own father being the youngest son in a 5-sons-and-1-daughter family, with the daughter being the youngest, pretty much got all his stuff as multiple-iteration hand-me-downs from his brothers, while the youngest sister often got everything new...
    After all, pass down boy clothing and toys... but you can hardly give them to the girl, right? (well, maybe nowadays but then was different times).
    Same happens the other way around, of course. Many a young girls first summer dress once belonged to one of her elder sisters, depending on the fit.
    On top of that, the Weasleys weren't supposed to be that super well-to-do for a wizard family and that often means that recycling of possessions happens a lot more often.

Bill and charlie were the first ones. Percy was their perfect boy. Then its twin and ginny is tue only girl. Makes sense that he has such issues. I just think despite everything and all the complaining he does always rise to the occasion and that makes him a great wizard too

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому

      Ron certainly has some justification to feel overlooked, though I think he takes it personally much more than he should when its really just the effect of being the 6th child (though children tend to take things personally in general). The problem I have is that you see ron take these things out on people like harry/hermione who have nothing to do with those justifiable reasons for ron to feel ignored. Then the biggest problem is while you can justify ron's actions in book 4 as those latent issues coming to a head as well as just kid's being kid's, it is far harder to justify ron leaving in book 7. By that point he clearly seems to have matured and the situation as a whole is just far more serious and yet his latent issues still boil up and potentially could have led everyone to ruin, just far harder to still excuse ron after that episode.

    • @mousinge
      @mousinge 6 років тому +5

      That Harry and Hermione have done nothing is the problem. The consistently take Ron at face value and such, take him for granted. Through either obliviousness or self absorption (mostly the latter in Harry's case, you can't deny it even if it's justifiable) Ron's problems are always considered trivial, and while yes Harry's issues ARE almost always bigger, it is not a healthy friendship if one party has to constantly take, and NEVER have the wherewithal to give anything back. As for Hermione, even when she focuses on something he wants with the quidditch team her first instinct is to cheat for him instead of remotely thinking he actually had the talent to do it, and the fact that she's surprised EVERYTIME he's clever says something really bad about their friendship, and frankly sickening about their romance.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому +1

      I'll give you the point on hermione, and quite frankly she behaves the same way towards harry and others also which has always bothered me about her character. As for harry though, what in the world were you reading if you think harry is dismissive of ron or just takes him for granted. Even with ron's embarrassment harry is constantly amazed and complementary of places like the burrow, and spends basically every minute of his free time with ron (outside of episodes like the triwizard deal). He gives ron gifts, shares his own gifts like the invisibility cloak or brooms with ron, and constantly expresses thankfulness for being included in ron's family. Harry also frequently sticks with ron and continues to hang out with him even when ron is feuding with hermione and you could reasonably expect harry to side with his other friend. He even goes so far as to immediately forgive and reconcile with ron the handful of times ron does abandon him for stupid reasons like in book 4 or 7.
      Honestly, aside from the fact that harry is also a teenage boy (not exactly the most openly emotional group ever) I just don't see how harry could be more accepting and giving towards ron. I can't agree with you that harry ignores ron due to being self-absorbed, or that if he does it is somehow a sign of being an unhealthy friendship. Realistically it would more a sign of self-absorption on ron's end if it was a problem that harry ignored him in favor of issues of life and death due to the number one target of a megalomaniac throughout the series. Harry pays attention to ron basically every minute of the series that he isn't absorbed with trying to literally stay alive.

    • @mousinge
      @mousinge 6 років тому +3

      Let me be more clear, I think Harry is self absorbed not selfish. ,He's essentially a very generous and self sacrificing (obviously) person, and that speaks wonders about him given his upbringing could easily have made him covetous and stingy. And yes Harry is frequently complimentary and I think sees Ron in a better light than any one else does. If Voldemort had just died trying to kill baby Harry, I think he would have been a very good friend. But he didn't die and Harry is almost consistently bombarded with traumatic experiences. He doesn't inherently think he's better or deserves more (aside from early book 5, but given that it really only happens once I'll pass it off as grief and stress, despite how obnoxious I find him there), what he does think is his problems are more important than everyone else's and they should be focusing an that and not their own issues - and he's right. I already said the self absorption was justifiable, his problems ARE bigger than most of Ron and Hermione's. But constantly swallowing every insecurity, worry and need for someone else isn't sustainable and ISN'T healthy. I'll also point out that usually when he's siding with Ron over Hermione, either she's being pompous, otherwise obnoxious, or he's got reason to be annoyed with her himself. Plus he needs Ron in a way he doesn't need Hermione. She pushes him, Ron grounds him so when he already feels too pushed and pulled, Ron's friendship is comfortable and comforting. I think the issue is it's the same for Hermione, Harry inspires her and once again Ron grounds her, but Ron only has two people that, yes push him to be better, but also do exactly what everyone he knows does and make him feel insignificant.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому

      I'm confused, you seem to fully recognize and acknowledge everything harry does for ron and yet still call him and hermione out for being the problem and reason for ron's insecurities. I mean, I get what your saying but on the other hand you could give that same basic description of friendship for like 90+% of all real world teenage friendships and quite frankly harry especially is a far better friend than the average teenager. Teenagers tend to be self-absorbed and think of their own problems, even the best of them.
      I think this really leads to the main issue with Ron in the series. While everyone else is going through an arc of character growth through the series and raise to the situation whenever things get serious, Ron is basically the only the one who consistently displays the immaturity you would expect of a teenager. That's what makes his actions particularly annoying because he seems so consistently petty in his motivations while everyone else either rarely acts that way or has clear and forgivable reasons to do so. It's also the reason why its easy to blame Ron himself for those actions because we others, notably harry, who have to deal with the same and worse issues constantly and yet constantly deal with them in a far more mature manner (book 5 aside but as you have noted there are many excuses for that).
      Finally, I just categorically disagree that harry always thinks his problems are more important and should be focused on. He does think that in the specific moments when his problems flare up (reasonably I should say) but seems to be focused being a good friend to ron every other moment. I think the problem you may be having is that most of what we see in the books are when harry's issues are flaring up (because that's the main plot) but you have to remember that there are months and months of time when that isn't the case where there is every indication harry is an amazing friend. And really that what a healthy firendship is. Either side gets their moments of being the needy friend, but most of it is just an equal give and take. Quite frankly it would be less healthy if harry were to ignore his issues and always focus on ron, and it would be unhealthy for ron as much as harry because it would cause him to have unrealistic expectations of his relationships with everyone rather than simply coming to terms with his own insecurities and recognizing other people have issues too and not everything is about him (aka the lesson all of us have to learn about our issues at some point in our lives).

      I took the wand quiz at least 7 times and every time I got a different wand, although I’ve always come out with Dragon Heartstring.

    I took Pottermore twice because there was one thing I wasn't sure about, but both times gave me fairly similar wands.
    Dragon Core with Willow Wood 13 1/4 inch slightly yielding
    and Dragon Core with Alder Wood, (this was my first wand so I'm going by memory) 12 3/4 inch slightly yielding.
