It sounds highly plausible, there is something about Voldemort that already attracted the phoenix feather once, so maybe it is this same presence that attracted the second feather? From the sounds of it, phoenixes don't shed many feathers that can be used in wandcores, so it might have been prophecy... The feathers of Fawkes would always choose Voldemort and if Voldemort wouldn't have attacked Harry and infused him with part of his soul by accident, the wand would have remained ownerless for eternity (after all, it likely remained ownerless for more than 50 years). As only one wizard was worthy of the core, nobody could claim it. Unless they were Voldemort's equal. Voldemort marked Harry as his equal, by making him part Voldemort by accident so the wand would be attracted. It also would fullfill the "marking of an equal" in the prophecy even better. Voldemort made Harry his equal enabling to gain the loyality of a wand so equal to his own... Which in turn worked with the rest of prophecy as Harry was the only one who was able to withstand Voldemort and with cores of equal origin, it made Voldemorts wand less effective to Harry.
But there is also something else, over the years, Harry did tame the wand and gained its loyality, mostly due to Harry's own loyality to his wand, compared to Voldemort. There is an interesting difference between how Harry and Voldemort treated their wand. Once Voldemort realized that his wand was less effective against Harry, he abandoned it. The first time, Harry's wand retalliated against Voldemort using a different wand, by giving him a taste of the magic he used to produce with the brother wand and later Voldemort tried to tame the Elder Wand, over his own wand. Harry however could never abandon his wand. Even as the rightful owner of the Elder Wand, he only wanted to be able to use the wand he had bought from Ollivander. He used the most powerful wand in the world to repair his old one, who couldn't be fixed by another wand. Harry showed loyality to the wand to such a degree that it no longer mattered that he no longer had a piece of Voldemort in him, the wand was now fully loyal to him.

if harry wasnt destined to be the one who lived then the other one who WAS supposed to be was Neville ...
      .
now why couldnt the feather have desired to right a wrong and chose harry to right the wrong of giving a wand with his feather in it to one who became as evil and corrupt as could be ..
      .
one little bit of oversight you did ... you say a a nonmuggle must use a wand .... yet riddle was hurting people WITHOUT a wand ... a wand is NOT required ... it is a channeling device or focus ... just like a voiced incantation is NOT needed to perform a spell ...

I think its a mistake to assume wands look for "good" or "bad" people. Ollivander is an extremely good example of a true neutral character. Yes he is terrified of Voldemort, but he also shows awe at Voldemorts power. And ultimately Ollivander is most interested in wands and their magic, no matter who the wands choose. Every bit of information he gets expands his knowledge. He is truly dedicated to his craft.
Ollivander is in a way, a personification of what wands are. They are true neutral. They are a mystery how they work yes, but the wands themselves are drawn to specific types of personalities, strengths in magic and types of magic. They don't care about good or evil. If they did, wouldn't all evil characters never get a wand choosing them?
Also the series talks again and again about how similar yet different Voldemort and Harry are. They are both orphans, they don't have real family, they have known cruelty, they both called Hogwarts home, and despite Harry's connections with Voldemort, he is truly a very powerful wizard, and it is reflective of his heritage and the spells he casts.
So I think it's safe to say the wands chose the two of them due to the internal characteristics that make up the young boys, and the potential they have. Not necessarily based of any potential to be good or evil, but more so based off personalities and the magical powers within themselves.

Apart from the fact that Harry’s personality fit the type of wizard a Phoenix feather would choose, I think destiny played a role. The reason Voldemort went after Harry was because of the prophecy. So, perhaps the wand also sensed Harry’s role against Voldemort, and chose him knowing that when they finally battle it would be harder for Voldemort to harm Harry with his wand since the wands are brothers. If that makes sense.

Harry was pretty talented in his own right, his teachers said so, and he was way above level with certain difficult spells like the patronus charm. The part of Voldemorts soul did probably play some part, but the phoenix wand stayed his, after Voldemorts defeat.
I might also be that the very balance of magic was upset by Voldemorts abuse of (dark) magic and it put Harry and the prophecy into being to counteract, with things like the twinned wand cores and Harry being the polar opposite of Voldemort.

  • @TheKavin1701

Voldemort made Harry significant when he chose to attack him. Remember that the prophecy said that the "Dark Lord shall mark him as his equal." Voldemort set the ball rollinh to connect him and Harry.
Harry completed the connection by choosing to be the one to defeat Voldemort. Dumbledore explained that it's the difference between being dragged into battle and walking in with your head held high.
Connected by coincidence/fate but intertwined by choice.

There's one thing that instantly disproves this theory. It's that when the horcrux was removed from Harry and the holly wand was repaired, Harry was still it's master. Whilst the Elder wand changes master to whoever beats it's previous ones, phoenix wands are more loyal, so the fact that the Holly wand's power didn't disappear with the horcrux means that you've gone in the wrong direction. I think it would be more suitable to say Fawkes is a bit like Dumbledore. In its early days it chose power and glory - Tom Riddle. In it's later days it chose love and compassion - Harry.

  • @valeriemorton5517

Odd how no one commented on the one thing that truly makes the two wands "polar" opposites, a pole being a single object in which the magnetic charges have been repulsed to the maximum distance from one another. The power source itself, the feather, is neutral, neither good nor evil, but capable of being used for either purpose. But the choices of wood have definite moral overtones. Holly is not a particularly strong wood, but it is extremely pale and usually described as being white. Of the timber native to the British isles, yew is both quite strong and flexible, and so dark of tone that it is often described as being black. Visually this is completely missed in the movies, but yes - Harry's wand is white, and Voldemort's is black. If you are looking for moral symbols, there's not a much clearer picture.

Great video but this is the first one that I disagree with. Your views that Phoenix chose both Voldemort and Harry because they were both exceptionally great wizards and would do amazing things and also the other view that it only picked Harry because a piece of Voldemort was inside of him I disagree…the real reason is because Phoenix knew the future in that Harry would need that phoenix feather in order to defeat Voldemort it protects him as they have the same core It chose Harry for a reason and that reason is to fight evil with good to defeat Voldemort by having the same wand core

Dumbledore found brought both voldemort and Harry into the Wizarding world. He also is the owner of fauks. He also is was a very cautious wizard whom knew many other powerful wizards. Maybe he was told by a seer about the events of voldemorte and Harry, and while not entirely believing that this was destiny, he would be cautious enough to plan for the worst. Hence he gets the Phoenix to donate 2 feathers. Gets olivander to ensure that both characters recieve said wands. Etc. Etc.

  • @grec.

I completely agree with the Voldemort theory but regarding Harry; yes, he was in a way 'pushed' to do great things as a wizard because he had to battle Voldemort to save his own life. And yes, his fame came from the manifestation of Voldemort's advanced dark magic that left Harry the scar. People thought it was his deed when in fact it was Lily's magic that made all the situation that took place possible (Harry's survival due to her protection and the involuntary horcrux made because the killing curse bounced). But let's not forget, although i do agree that the wand chose Harry because of Voldemort's soul inside of him; Harry's bravery was what made him duel with Voldemort all those numerous occasions. He didn't know the complexity that magic could offer, yet he never feared saying his name and was always willing to fight him. He learned advanced magic because of the danger Voldemort put him through, yes, but he was able to learn them being so young and inexperienced, so that's talent. A talent which combined with destiny, made him great. Maybe the phoenix feather had forsee Harry's potential to greatness and also sensed his propensity to thrive.

  • @tomfr9073
    @tomfr9073 2 роки тому

Maybe it had something to do with the prophecy and the wand being drawn to harry because of the horecrux that voldemort had laid inside harry (scar) as you mentioned. Honestly plot set aside, i think mostly that it was the fact that the wand was "destined" to be drawn to harry being that him and voldemort shared the connection that harry would need in order for him to fulfill the prophecy. If it wouldn't be for that spell that comes out from the wand when two "brother" wands tries to attack the other harry surely would've died at the graveyard meaning he couldn't fulfill the prophecy. there's no way that what wand harry got was chanced being that harry was prophesied to vanquish the dark lord for good.
so all in all, The wand chose Harry because of the connection between him and voldemort (the horecrux) and because he was prophesied to vanquish the dark lord for good. There is just no way that harry comes out alive from the graveyard withouth the help of that spell when two brother cores attack eachother, hes what a 4th year student vs the infamous dark lord voldemort who swept with terror and fear through the whole wizarding world during his reign before he "died". Even when he's gone people fear speaking his name, that says just abit of how he was during his reign.
iirc. Olivander said something along the lines of "strange, curious that this wand would be drawn to you when the twin brother of this core did terrible but great things" when first meeting him in the wand store.

we would all love to think that Harry was destined for great things (actually he was it just happened that the path started with Voldy giving him a push in that direction on accident with a piece of his own soul).....but at the same time, wands can think, they choose the wizard/witch.....Harry's wand did sense the piece of Voldy in him, the phoenix feather came from Fawkes (the second feather was drawn to Harry because of the piece of Voldy) and the first feather chose Voldy....being from the same Phoenix, the 2 feathers both chose Voldy, if you think about it....but Voldy was always destined to create his own Nemesis.....what if Neville would have been the chosen one, what if Neville's mother jumped between Voldy and Neville that night, what if the piece of Voldy entered Neville instead?....the 2nd phoenix feather (The one in the Holly wand) would have choosen Neville instead of Harry, for the same exact reason...the piece of Voldy's soul inside him....but that was always destined to be

Riddle wanted to live forever; Phoenixes are immortal. The 'wand chooses the wizard' theory is similar to astrology, imho. They read way to much into simple events. ;) A wizard's idiosyncratic powers might have a special affinity to a specific combination of wood and core, so that their efficiency is multiplied. But the wand is not a sentient object with desires and goals. So Riddle's desire and focus upon immortality resonated well with the phoenix feather core and wood type.
And yep, a large part of Harry's getting the other phoenix feather wand was the piece of Riddle's soul within him, possessing the same affinities. However, note that Harry's powers didn't apparently diminish after the soul was removed from him. At that point, perhaps, the fact that he *had* actually died and been reborn gave him his own affinity to the phoenix, which could have been even more powerful than the Riddle immortality wish.

I have a counter-question. Why did none of the other wands choose Harry? So my thoughts on why Harry's wand chose him is because he had already killed Voldemort as an infant and was destend to kill him again. In the wand duel, Harry's wand forced Voldermort's wand to expel past spells. Harry just had more raw power. That is what both the wands chose, mighty wizards

I’ve always disagreed with the notion that Harry isn’t special apart from his connection to Voldemort and that’s why the wand chose him. You see it was Harry who made his choices and it was his choices that made him special. The wand chose Harry because he was the opposite of riddle in every way. And this made him especially appropriate for the wand.

I don't disagree that having voldemort inside could be a reason for the core choosing him, as well as voldemort marking harry as the equal and not NEville. Because in the end neville could be in harry;s situation. But Harry also comes from greatness too through his family. James and Lilly (albeit James can be jerky sometimes as a teen) were part of the order of the phoenix and did well in school. Also the pooter lineage and being a descendant from the peverell brothers, and lily herself was great witch ( i.e. the hermione of her generation).

It's pretty obvious. The way it's written, the wand chose Harry to foreshadow the fact that he was a horcrux, and that's the end of it. I know, it's not a fun explanation. It was just a practical storytelling device, if you will. It has nothing to do with anything but that.

I always like to thing Harry would've been a slightly above average person if not for Voldemort. Voldemort was the truly talented wizard with incredible ambition and the will to do anything to achieve them, Harry is the enemy Voldemort created in his lust for power. This is further reinforced by the prophecy, wich ultimately was "Voldemort will make his greatest enemy while trying to secure his power and immortality".
To me the fact that the Holly wand chose Harry because of Voldemort's soul shard is thematically resonant with everything else. The only two things that made harry special, at the end of the day, were the bit of Voldemort's soul inside of him and Love, the love of his mother that died to save him and the love he had for his friends and close ones.

Independently of the feather, Fawkes assisted Harry in the chamber of secrets. There was an affinity between Fawkes and Harry and, on the surface, it was a reward for Harry defending Dumbledore, but it could run deeper than that. Harry had to arise from the ashes of his early abusive childhood and also had to rise again after being struck down by Voldemorte in the forest in the deathly hallows. Fawkes likely saw a kindred spirit within Harry and his destiny.

The book is very explicit about this. When Voldemort tried to kill Harry he made Harry the one to fulfill the prophecy that would lead to his doom. Had he chosen another, such as Neville, that person would be the one to fulfill the prophecy and therefore, most likely, have had the phoenix feather want - and Harry, meanwhile, would probably have had a wand similar to that of his father or mother.
Given that, it is very clear that the wand chose Harry because it senses Tom Riddle, but it is also clear that, by the end of the books, the wand had long since changed its allegiance from Tom Riddle to Harry himself, as it embraces him fully after being repaired with the Elder Wand despite the fact that Voldemort's Horcrux was no longer in Harry; why? Because Harry proved himself great in his trials against Voldemort, earning the wand's respect if he hadn't it already.

In the beginning, one could say Harry was only significant because he was "The Boy Who Lived"; but after finishing the story, one could hardly say that Harry was not great of his own accord. He mastered multiple spells, conquered many enemies, and showed bravery unmatched by any other at his age. But above all, Harry gave love despite his life being filled with pain, death, and hate. It is this act alone that proved his greatness. When his love persevered against all the evils in the world, he achieved the pinnacle of character.

I really can't agree with the dark side of why this wand would have chosen him. He was the antithesis of voldemort. Good against evil. Selfless against selfish. Powerful and yeah, heroic. Ultimately, in this story good triumphs over evil, and that wouldn't have been possible if the wand chose Harry for wicked reasons.

There are 2 major points against the idea that Harry Potter was only great because of the piece of Voldermort's soul inside him.
    1. his mother is one of the greatest potioneers Slughorn ever had the privilege of teaching.
and was both talented and POWERFUL with magic beyond potions.
there's a reason Harry is attracted to Ginny.
Just 1 single Reducto curse from Ginny brought down the Hall Of Prophecy.
Lily Potter's sacrifice was powerful enough to protect Harry from Voldermort's Killing Curse.
I think Harry is attracted to Ginny because her power is familiar to him (because Ginny's power is comparable to Lily's power).
    2. he is a Potter.
his father was excellent at Quidditch,
but even more impressively... James became an Animagus without being guided thru the process by an Animagus... as a child!
fully grown and fully trained adult wizards with Animagus guides have had terrible accidents when attempting to become Animagi.
    it's just that difficult.
All of The Marauders were exceptionally powerful, not just because 3 of them became Animagi as children, but also because the 4 of them created the Marauder's Map together. That map is essentially on par with most ancient magical relics and icons. Extremely impressive.
Harry and James Potter are NOT the only impressive Potters.
Their last name has an origin.
Linfred of Stinchcombe AKA "The Potterer" invented many medicinal potions including early versions of Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion.
    ...emphasis on regrowing bones back...
Fleamont Potter, Harry's grandpa, was also a potterer and invented Sleekeazy's Hair Potion (sure, less important than a potion that regrows bones, but still impressive).
Between Linfred "The Potterer", Fleamont Potter, and Lily Evans... I'm beginning to wonder if Harry would have been Outstanding at Potions even before getting the Half-Blood Prince's book if Snape had not mistreated him.
Linfred's son, Hardwin Potter, married Iolanthe Peverell...
...the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell, who either created The Cloak Of Invisibility (while there are other invisibility cloaks, all of them lose their ability over time... except this one), or received it from Death personified... after besting Death personified...
the point of all this is that Harry has power and greatness from both his mom and his dad.
remember that Voldemort can't produce a Patronus.
Harry's fully formed and powerful Patronus (as a child!) is NOT because he has a piece of Voldermort's soul inside him.
it's because he is the child of 2 very powerful magic users.
all that being said... I do believe Fawkes' feather chose Harry because Voldemort chose Harry.
If Voldemort has chosen Neville, then Fawkes' feather would have chosen Neville.
but NOT because of the greatness that a piece of Voldemort's soul imbues...
...but because Phoenixes represent death and rebirth.
    Voldemort is death.
the one he chooses to mark as his equal is rebirth... death's undoing...
the Phoenix's first feather chose Tom Riddle... it did not choose Voldemort...
the other feather chose Voldemort's undoing... to right the wrong...
...to bring life where Voldemort misused the first feather to bring death.

      @ATalesTruth- Рік тому

I think it’s just that the fact the phoenix feather where only 2 where made
The difference is the wood and and length and flexibility
I think the wands in question where always opposites
One craved power and was more prone to choose someone who can change the world by any means hence the yew wood given its a wood that looks for someone over life and death and length being 13 meaning it looks for much character in someone
As for Harry’s wand it was more humble more or less equal to its brother but didn’t seek power or care for it and choose someone who has a journey based on spiritual path and good intentions
Hence the holly wood description, and the length being 11 inch means it was looking for someone of decent character
And probably choose Harry cause it now knew what’s it’s brother did and sensed Harry was it’s target
Choosing harry to protect him just as it would have if longbottom was though off as the chosen one instead
Both would be set on a spiritual journey with good intentions and both had decent personalities
It wouldn’t choose harry based on harry being a horcux given the other aspects of the wand suggest otherwise

Remember Tom don't know love, as he wasn't born out of love but more like faux love as his mother use a love potion on his father, now the one soul of Voldemort that came close to know anything about love was the one in Harry and as we saw in the deathly Hollow, it was on the verge of death because it got hit with the killing curse, however it was also small and frail probably due to that fact it wasn't used to the amount of love that Harry have and had been given, after all it because of that same love that Voldemort couldn't possess Harry.

So if Tom had chosen Nevil then he still would have been defeated and I think that the wand that chose harry would have chosen him instead because the wand turned out to be a very important part of the whole puzzle. It follows then that yes, the wand likely was pulled to Harry only because of Tom's splintered soul embedded in him. I think though that it was likely attracted so it could help "the chosen one" to defeat the other wand and redeem the folly of the choice made by the other wand.

No, he wouldn't have defeated him because Voldemort wouldn't have given Neville's parents the option to survive. What really caused Voldemort to be defeated was Harry's mother's sacrifice. Snape asked Voldemort to spare her and because of that, Voldemort gave her the choice to survive but even so she chose to save her son's life, this protected Harry and caused the killing curse to ricochet. Voldemort had no reason to spare anyone in Neville's family, so Neville would have died even if Voldemort had gone after him. The prophecy could only have referred to Harry.

You're also forgetting about snape.......think for a second how crucial snape was to dumbledore, the resistance, and the success of dumbledores plan with harry. He was in love with lily, and the moment he learned of her murder (despite his begging for her to be spared) was the moment voldemort lost him forever.
Snape gave dumbledore crucial intel, played the role of double agent and then later when voldy came back played the role of triple agent. He kept both harry and dumbledore alive at different points (think how he counteracted quirrell or saved dumbledore from the curse). He swapped griffindores sword out for a fake and guided harry to the real one to finish destroying horcruxes. He took the unbreakable vow to kill dumbledore in malfoys place and informed dumbledore of everything...which lead to the misinformation that voldy believed snape was master of the elder wand instead of draco....and on his death he provided harry with the final pieces of the puzzle to know what had to happen next for dumbledores plan to work (ie the same ancient sacrificial magic lily made for harry, harry had to make in the forrest, which was why harry was able to come back and why voldemorts magic was no longer as effective anymore.)
Neville simply didnt have these circumstances surrounding him. Snape was not in love with alice. He was not begging for alice's life and vowing to destroy voldemort on her behalf...voldy was never even giving her the option of choosing to sacrifice herself because of that...there was no snape (his favourite) to ask this. So she would have died instantly in the way james did....and so would neville....
It could only ever have been harry.

Plot armour or plot coincidences. The wand chooses the wizard even more so after the battle of Hogwarts and Voldemorts final defeat. The wand still chose Harry.

One Thing I Think that Has Gone Over Most People's Heads is that, the Phoenix Represents Life and Death and So Voldemort Represents Death and Harry Represents Life! Voldemort won't Except Death So He Brings Death to Others in a Futile Attempt for Life Eternal! The One Thing He Can't Have, Because He Is Death! While Harry Embraces Life But Excepts Death to Preserve the Life of Others! Because He is Life! Therefore He Lives and Voldemort Dies! Life and Death, the Phoenix!

There are things greater than power. Greatness can be shown through love, loyalty, bravery, knowledge, ambition. Harry was not born great, he chose to be great just like he chose with the sorting hat. He learned from the love of the people around him and proved his greatness by trial. Yes, Voldemort was powerful and great in his power, but Harry was great in a power that Voldemort knows not. The Phoenix gave an opportunity, the opportunity of choice is beyond power.

or maybe.... harry needed plot armour? but dumblydore did say he has some qualities in common with tom riddle but I think the wand Is a perfect symbolism to how you can have things in common but yet be different because of the choices you make, with their wands having the same core but different wood.

If it were true that the wand chose Harry because of the piece of Voldemort inside him then the plot in the 7th book wouldn’t have worked with the elder wands allegiance or all the other Wands allegiances that Harry ganged at malfoy manor.

I think it's because of Baltimore but what I think is because yes the phoenix feather did choose Tom Riddle others years ago and once he turned evil the phoenix feather realized what a mistake it had made and realized that Harry was the one that was going to defeat him when Harry went into buy his wand so yes and no I think if Voldemort hadn't done what he did Harry Potter would not have been bound for greatness he would have been a good wizard but that's about it I think that because the one sensible the more and Harry he knew it would be the only way he can make up for the mistake
