Special review episode looks at a cheap sprayer, a not so cheap sprayer, and a kinda pricey sprayer- Plus a review of Charles Neil's new online finishing school, and more!
Mike spraying with Chip sitting behind the piece was maybe your funniest bit yet. Nice job!
Stumpy, It's always great to have one woodworker compliment and recognize another for their skill and talent. Your recognition of Charles Neil for his woodworking and finishing as well as his willingness to help other woodworkers was great and very worthwhile. Two-Thumbs Up !!
I don’t know how many hundreds or even thousands of woodworking videos I have watched, and don’t remember ever lol’ing at any of them (not counting Nick Offerman videos) until this one. You covered the exact information I was trying to learn about, and made it highly entertaining as well. Thanks for all of your videos!
Being new to your channel & after watching a few of your more recent videos I have to say I'm very impressed with you & your channel.
I very much like your "tongue in cheek" wit & sarcastic humor. It's interesting to see how your channel has evolved becoming more polished, get it, "polished", lol.
Keep up the good work & thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
How did I just come across this video?! I've been subbed for at least a few years now. This is some throwback gold 🤣
Wow. A retro Stumpy Nubs episode popped up on my feed. Nice!
Thank you for introducing Charles Neil! I wood knot feel so confident wood working without you two. Priceless.
Hello James. It’s Heather Nelson contacting you again. My husband Kevin, is STILL watching your videos. He loves them. I will admit, you’re actually quite funny so of all the videos he watches, you remain most tolerable. But I do have one thing to say….. if my husband starts using an HVLP sprayer to do ‘medium’ jobs… or jobs of any other sort for that matter, in my kitchen… when I’m not home, I’m coming for you!… cause you’ll have earned THAT, my friend! 😊
After watching a few of your older videos now, I can truly say that you are an absolutely hilarious guy and I wish you brought more of this humor to your newer videos, but I understand why you don’t. I think you should have a second channel where you can show off your comedic side. You could have been a standup for sure.
I never knew about Charles Neil. I’m also watching your old videos obviously and just liked your Facebook page and the first thing I saw was your post about him passing. Rest in piece, Charles.
I was about to unbox my Earlex when I caught this video before heading into the shop. It seems Charles Neil is showing up everywhere now that mysteriously coincides with what I'm doing. I felt like I lost a close friend whom I've never met but know he had a ton of knowledge passed on to many people and in videos for the future generations to learn from. May he RIP. Hope the funding reaches its goal to help the family out.
Thanks Stumpy for the great tips!
Paul
You've come a long ways, baby!
"Viola!" XD im dead. love this guy.
I have this Graco equipment. It may disappoint you but this is what I have found about it after using it for a year.
THE GOOD:
18-V Batteries are powerful and allows a long time of use in between the charging.
It is cordless.
Spray quality is uniform.
The pressure adjustment knob works well.
The two speed option is handy and easy to use.
THE BAD:
Self cleaning mechanism is grossly inefficient. Even after proper cleaning, some residue from earlier paint keep surfacing.
The machine clogs so frequently needing you to remove the suction pipe and prime the pump. My be I got a wrong piece in India, but its so frequent that it frustrates the whole idea of painting.
It is unforgiving. If you delay cleaning it for even 15 minutes, it will clog at many places including inaccessible places within the machine. You need to then open almost all of the machine and clean it.
Recently we forgot to clean it after a few coats of white PU and the machine jammed completely. Have tried all tricks in the book but it will just not work.
The filter gets choked very fast. As a result, a line of drip follows each spray. You have to learn to develop a trick to not let that happen still it does and when that happens after your final coat, you had it. Many times, we had to rub the whole paint out and go back to the start.
It has a about 1 liter capacity cup. With the wright of paint and batteries, its very heavy and the wrists totally take the toll.
The filter at the suction pipe also acts as an angle guide. But it is very weird. Once cup is half empty it will not spray at lower angles. This ten requires you to keep refilling the cup at half empty.
No training or after sales service.
No key to open the bolt on its head. May be it is supposed to be opened by the experts only.
The nozzles thread ad entire area gets clogged and it is painfully frustrating to change the nozzle set up.
No spare bottle supplied and none available in the market.
Dripping dripping dripping and dripping.
Uneven coats and I am talking about it being used by professional painters with decades of experience.
THE UGLY:
Price, In India, it cost us about a thousand US dollars.
And in all we must have done about 100 liters of painting. Mostly lacquer and PU. And the machine is on it's death bed.
Anyways after the PU clogged up, it is good as junk. My 1000 dollars went down the drain just like that.
SUMMING UP:
At best it is a good tool for hobbyist and once in a year DIY work.
You need to spend twice the time cleaning it (mind it even if you have many bottles, you still need to clean the whole machine from inside as the paint travels through the machine in a piston like process) so that is something very unsettling for a professional who needs to work enough to be able to make a few buck and not just play with it.
Graco may have some very good corded electric systems, but they cost in the north of 7,000 US Dollars in India, and not many can afford that kind of a system.
If you want to use it for a professional purpose, don't even look at it. I have given my opinion to many of my friends and after buying much better and larger systems within same price range of 1,000 dollars, they are all thanking me.
Totally agree with you. My Graco is in a dumpster somewhere.
For a full-on goober… YOU are a badass.
You have to watch until the very end of the video! It was just water, and the boy (it's Chip and he's actually 21 years old) was playing along. We're not THAT mean around here!
I only review what I like to use. I've never tried Rockler's HVLP or the HF version. Like I said, there are a lot of others out there. But these three work well for me.
Great website and videos, where have you been all my life! ha ha
Thanks for the time you take to enlighten AND entertain.
This is an old vid, but ironically I use a $15 Harbor Freight gun with a $1500 Rolair compressor. Works great. Throw it away if you don’t want to clean it. Have been thru dozens over the years.
This is pure gold!
In all honesty- I would start out with the Harbor Freight sprayer, especially if you already have a good compressor. It's a good gun for the price and you can use it until you figure out just how much spraying you will be doing. If you don't have a compressor, I would go with the Earlex. I really like it and it's a great deal. The Graco is a great unit, but I think it's a bit too expensive and it's not much of a quality upgrade, unless you need cordless.
I read that about replacing the pump every 100 gallons. I don't know where that info comes from, but I do know that every little part of the sprayer is replaceable, so if something goes wrong, you can replace the broken spring, or whatever rather than whole big components. But I'm not a Graco salesman, I can only tell you what I have experienced.
Hey, Stumpy from the past: Perhaps if you didn't have hundreds of thousands of block planes you could find some space for a spray booth!
Brilliant, another load of learning very well presented.
Thanks for the great review! I think I'll go with that Earlex
Great video and great info. Thanks Stumpy
I usually check reviews before buying stuff too. Thanks for sharing. It was still quite good though different.
You can toss sprayers too. Unless you have a concrete shop floor, 'cause they might break.
Chip's a good sport. And it was water.
60 gallon compressors are half the price of 80 gallons but typically have the same size motor and compressor you just loose a little tank capacity but they are in the 400-500 range rather than the 1200 to 1500 for an 80 gallon also the larger 2 stage compressor are actually much quieter than even the small pancake compressors they usually have much lower rpm and a longer stroke. I had a husky 60 gallon for years and painted multiple cars with it I think it was 500 I switched over to a dewalt 60 gallon for 450 when the husky broke down in the middle of a project. (turns out it was just the switch) If you have the space and a 220 hook up its worth the money you can run any of your air tools without waiting for the comp to charge. I just recently got into wood working and having the compressor from when I did automotive work has been awesome.
Loving your older videos too!
Watching this video, I couldn't help but see scenes where you are wearing a t-shirt, and then suddenly, the t-shirt disappears, throughout the entire video. Continuity, gotta love it....
I had a hard time getting past that price tag too. But it's not a squirt gun by any means. It's really nice. That said, it's a little pricey for most regular woodworkers. I got a really good deal on it, otherwise I would have likely been scared off by the price before I got a chance to try it out.
Stumpy,
I just subscribed. I have the same red and silver tool box with storage cabinet... that the other tool box was sitting on... to your left in the back against the wall. I thought I'd never see another one. I've been thinking of trying the HVLP sprayer from Harbor Freight....I think I'll take the plunge. Great Channel....thanks for the vids.
Higher Views for Little People... Good stuff. I don't know or care what Marvinbanjo said but there are plenty of us who really enjoy your videos and find you funny as hell. Keep up the great videos.
I have a similar spray gun,and use it with a 6 gallon porter cable compressor. The hvlp sprayers that are the best are the compressor less ones that look like hairdryers. Wagner makes some nice ones.
Charles Neil rest in peace my friend.
YES! "I've become a better woodworker as a result of this. And for that, it is one of my favorite things."
THAT is some meaningful shit.
I was looking at the Graco cordless models for small projects, but still on the fence. Some are not rated for solvents, while others are. Some users have been getting shocked when spraying solvents while using the sprayer that's not rated for solvents. The cordless model rated for solvents will run about $700, while the non-solvent model is quite a bit less. There is a corded model rated for solvents, and its much less expensive than the cordless model, but then you have the cord to deal with. I have a couple acres and need to paint about 1800 board feet of fencing, so for this I went with a Graco airless with a 50' hose...just plug into my generator, hook up the 5-gallon bucket, and away I go.
do you still use any of them still?
your show even from back then still is good today
Stumpy nubs! what a nick name! Dude you make some damn good videos
Stumpy:
Loved your show on paint sprayers and I need to buy a sprayer. If you were starting from scratch and only buying one sprayer, what would you buy? I love the cordless feature of the Graco and I am willing to bite the bullet but I wondered if the quality of the finish was as good as the Earlex. I will be spraying mostly clear finishes but I would love the ability to spray paint occassionally. So what would you recommend?
Thanks for your help and your great shows!
Jim
Graco makes more than one cordless. Which one did you get? Why is the pump not rebuildable when Graco says every part of the sprayer is replaceable? Like I said, I am not a Graco salesman, but I do wonder about this.
Hey stumpy I was wondering what you think of the harbor freight turbine hvlp system it looks like the earlex that you showed in this video
OMG! Just found this video. What year is this?? Some young kid doing the show! Hahaha!
Love your show
Not sure now, Stumpy as it was discarded as unrepairable. It was purchased about 18 months ago for around $500 on sale. Graco repaired it once. The second time it had a problem the rep said it was not repairable and out of warranty. The pump motor had seized and would only making a buzz/hum sound when the trigger was depressed. Perhaps they have changed the design since mine was purchased. I expected a lot more use than what I got for the price paid.
I know a carpentry finnish crew that run HF nail guns.
The way they see it as many finnish guns they go through they switched to HF just buy new one or keep a stack in the job trailer
That's what I'm talkin' about...
Is that stumpys little brother in the chair? I ask because he isnt in newer videos and I hope he is ok.
In reference to your remarks about pistons and motors and pumps
One fine day many years ago a mechanic asked the novice this Q?
'If ya' carb'rator carbs, and ya' genarator, is ginning, ah, what are ya' pistons ah doing?'...
Well the novice thinks a moment and replies
'They are jumping up and down of course'...
I enjoy your videos, I've ordered plans from your website. keep it up.
I have a Graco cordless that I bought at Sherwin Williams and can tell you that they are disposable. The pump is not rebuildable and it will seize up after a while, no matter how well you take care of it. Mine is junk after about 14 months.
The cordless looks very nose heavy. How is that gun on your wrists? I'm interested, but worried about the ergonomics
You said the HV5500 is stainless steal. I think if you check it is actually aluminum. But I like to watch you.
the environmental impact of that is immense though! not just the disposal of the can but the CFCs going into the atmosphere eating up the ozone... not to mention the impact of manufacturing. I'm not a tree hugger, but I think being irrisponsible and being lazy often overlap.
So when we spray should we also make sure someone is sitting behind the work piece we are spraying so we don't get lacquer on the lawn?
After watching this I immediately went on amazon to check on the graco as the cordless appealed to me. Reading through the reviews it sounds like you have to replace the pump every 100 gallons. Is this true? How much is the pump? This could end up being a very expensive proposition. And is the one you have a type 2 or the original model? Or is there even a difference (hard to tell from the product searches)? SO MANY QUESTIONS :)
I use a paint-ball gun it fun, not a good finish but fun, lol
priceless, a $700 tool, reduced to a squirt gun. surprised you didn't review Rockler's hvlp system, or the harbor freight clone, they both look too similar.
Any issue spraying water based poly with an airless?
hi Stumpy, you say (15:00) it sprays paints but the product description doesn't say so!
Can you spray water based polyurethane with these sprayers?
When they come out with one that is self cleaning then I'll buy it. But for now I'll stick to cans. When done, just toss it.
thanks for the vid :)
I agree about Charles having a great on line finishing course. I subscribed as well.
I'll just have to make do with my 7.5hp 80 gallon tank unit. Grin.
Did you know there isn't a Harbor Freight anywhere in the USA that was a gentlemen's club next to it. The strip clubs know what really interest men!
@Stumpy 7 years later how do you feel about this now?
Still use the Earlex. The Graco batter charger broke years ago and I haven't replaced it.
Can you explain to me what you are talking about since you are not lazy. Can you explain why a SPRAY can of lacquer is worse than buying a small can of lacquer(Since you throw both away when done and both get sprayed). Thanks.
Of course ..
I just thought how close the intro music is to red green
I have a concrete floor.
Graco leaves orange peel due to pulsating action.
Ha Ha...I typed this before I saw the ending!
Your video is pretty clean. Not a lot of wasted words, etc.
I would like to point out, however, at 12:00 you mentioned the word "VIOLA". I believe you wanted the word from the French, VOILA. Wiki dictionary reports: From vois (“see!, look!”), second-person singular imperative of voir (“to see, to look”) and là (“there”), literally meaning "look there!". Just trying to add clarity. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to visiting your website and discussing things woodworking with you in the future.
davecarpetcare Haha! I think it's more Stumpy's humor, not so much a misspoken word
davecarpetcare. Silly “rabbet”. That was a joke. He knows the word.
15:34 *giggle*
Grecko wasn't in rocky 4 , he was in wall street.
No that's the GECKO on the commercial
Why is that kid taking all the over spray to the face??? 😂
Goto 5:00 to find the meat
It made from aluminium not stainless steel
I've heard it pronounced "gray Coe"
Why is he spraying the kid in the wheel chair???
You funny guy
Hilarious...
I really miss the old humor.
crap shoot equals dice...as in gambling ... as in maybe u win maybe you lose.. not crap as in shit buddy.
You thought that was a serious statement, eh?
So Stumpy used to be funny and entertaining, in addition to informative? No way! Who would've thought. What happened?
Look at the thumbs-down ratio on this video. Woodworkers don't have a sense of humor, generally :)
Stumpy Nubs, Hi Stumpy! Oh. What a shame. This would be a better world with a little more laughter. I hope you are normally like that. I am.
Warning to Viewers: Do not spray things with people in wheelchairs right behind the target material at 7:32. Seriously, that's really messed up!
it was water, watch the end
I have dead puppies in my shop.
A lot of BS and nothing hapening
Talk way too much never watch the video
Too much talk
Twenty minutes of BS...Watched it on the toilet, perfect spot for this video
How long does it take you to poop?
You talk too much!
Super corny jokes... Stick to showing the actually product in action and you'll be fine
You...you know this is more of a vlog and certainly not a commercial, right...? And the cornyness of jokes varies relative to the wit of the audience, I find. Seriously, who doesn't like a good Dad joke now and then? Mike? Anyone seen Mike?
you talk to much
