His role as Augustus McRae in Lonesome Dove is flawless .. one of the greatest characters ever put on screen and in my opinion the greatest western and one of the greatest shows ever made.
A pokes a poke 😂
I loved him in the Apostle
He also played an excellent character in Broken Trail with Thomas Hayden Church and in Open Range with Kevin Costner. Both excellent western movies.
Ditto!
Lonesome Dove was fantastic and Duvall's screen presence was always through the roof. He did a small part in a film called, I believe it was "The Road" a post apocalyptic flick with, I think it was Viggo Mortensen in the lead. The film was a big yawn, until Duvall turned up in one of the scenes. For that scene, the film was magical. Then it went back to a snooze fest again after. One of the greats.
When he played Hub on Second Hand Lions. Classic.
That movie is aging like a Shelby mustang
!!!!!!!!!!
He did an excellent job playing Uncle Hub in Secondhand Lions
I agree. That one is second only to lonesome dove
The Apostle was real good also.
Yup tat one is so funny
One of the most underrated movies. I love it and he was great in it.
@@landonhays1458 yes sir!! Lonesome Dove is my favorite. I got here because I was explaining how you need to do demand respect in a leader position at work. So I played him that 2 minute or so clip of when him and Call went into the bar for a couple shots and the bartender didn't know who Gus was. So he got his nose broke lol
Robert Duvall is one of my favorite actors. He has never made a bad film.
Wild Horses? Love him too but that was terrible.
"Joe Kidd" is kind of shitty, but Duvall was good
I so agree! Duvall is just fantastic.
Gene Hackman too
The great Santini.
In my opinion, none of his roles can touch Gus in the Dove. Absolutely classic.
In that case I would say you are actually Somebody important. :- )
I have heard him say it was his favorite role
If you haven't' read the book.....it's also great
Really , I couldn't put Lonesome Dove down
Jack Hendricks I agree. His Lonesome Dove role was iconic. It’s hard to imagine that mini series having the impact it did without his performance.
Second hand lions an underrated classic by Duvall and Micheal Cain
It’s not Disney
Absolutely a great movie
Best part was when kicked those young punks ass in the convenient store 👍
@@sarahwithadragon6729 Disney and New líne cinema did it didn't they
Anto Mac nope just new line cinema maybe another production company also alone side but definitely not Disney. Google it.
Sadly Hollywood just doesn’t produce actors of this quality anymore...literally a class act.
There will be more. Just wait. There are already some who show promise.
Tom Hanks
Watch Power of the Dog on Netflix. The lead actor is nominated for best actor, the movie best picture. Cannot remember his name.
@@rmsmith2396 LOL
@@rmsmith2396agree!I thought Bridge of Spies was excellent! But so many are!📀📀📀
My personal favorite performances of his
1. Gus McRae in Lonesome Dove
2. Hub in Second hand Lions
3. Harry Hog in Days of Thunder
Could easily do a top ten, he is a great actor. He is in the argument for the best of his generation, and that's a stacked group.
excellent picks
Really? You didn't include the surfing Colonel from Apocalypse now? That's my favorite Robert Duval role. Well maybe tied with his short part in the movie "The Road".
@@johnnymcblaze I'm ashamed to admit that I've never saw Apocalypse Now. By the time I was old enough to know of and appreciate movies like that before my time I was too busy to watch many movies. The list of classic movies I've never watched is embarrassing.
As I get older I can relate with his roles as an annoyed old guy. Secondhand lions and days of thunder come to mind
You nailed it .
I love Robert Duvall. A great actor and a nice guy.
Could not agree more. A true National Treasure !
Agustus Mcrae in lonesome dove was his best to me. He was outstanding! And thats saying alot being such a talented actor in so many movies.
Frater Sol the correct spelling would be Augustus. He was named after Cesar Augustus.
ALL OF HIS WORK IS GENIUS,THE EPISODE OF COMBAT,when he played a german bombmaker, outstanding and then he did more genius roles, the masses love him,i like to hear him pray and sing in his pictures, great man
The director/producer of Lonesome Dove had him read for the part of Woodrow, but he said no, he wanted to play Gus.
Agree
Agreed. Augustus McCrae was an iconic role.
Guys a legend. He and Kevin in open range was a great, great performance. The two just did so well together. As a kid though I loved him in days of thunder 😂. "We're eating icecream". 😂
I loved the open range concept. I love all the actors. I thought it could have been 10 times better. I think the acting was wasted. The dialogue was so poorly written. I’m not hard to please with movies. I don’t watch with a critical eye. But open range was painful just because it could have been a masterpiece
I love the Smell of Napalm in the morning - Apocalypse Now. Maybe not his greatest role but still great.
Hub had to be my favorite roll I have had the privilege of watching
Like so many others here, Augustus McCrea, Lonesome Dove was the absolute best movie Robert DuVall ever played in. I've watched that movie 100 times - and will probably watch it 100 more times before I die. Excellent western, very excellent.
lonesome dove is the best thing ever filmed
Guys don't forget Duvall was in "The Godather," "The Godfather Part II" and "Apocalypse Now." While I agree his best performance was definitely in "Lonesome Dove," I don't agree that LD is better than "The Godfather." It is one of the best Westerns of all time though.
Same! And I still cry every time!
Me too!!
I knew the guy who made all the Indian's equipment on Lonesome Dove. He said Duvall was the nicest guy you would ever meet. Utterly humble and open.
I was honored to get to meet Duval and spend a few hours with him when he was working on a movie called "Lets Go Get [somebody] - I forget the name. Anyway, in person he is like a somewhat quieter, more toned down Gus in Lonesome Dove. A really nice guy.
And I frankly put the Lonesome Dove series in my very short list of the best movies ever made. (Yeh, I know it was a mini-series,. but that stil stands).
Met him and Tommy Lee Jones ..they both weren't very friendly.. although I can understand being bothered all the time!!
August McCrae.....enough said, the scene where they hang Urich, the look on his face....BRILLIANT
yes he is the role,he brings it to LIFE
Duvall has said he thought that was his best moment as an actor. His reaction to Jake hanging himself was spontaneous he said.
Augustus*
@@harrisfoster1066 _Well adios, boys. Hope you won’t hold it against me. I never meant no harm._

Gus in Lonesome Dove: iconic
Robert Duvall. Every part he played was a success. A lovely actor to watch.
My sentiments exactly !!
There are so many movies where his portrayal of a character was magnificent. I also loved him in "Broken Trail."
💯 Love him best in Secondhand Lions, Open Range and Broken Trail.
The Godfather 1,2 , The Lonesome Dove. The Apostle, Tender Mercies, The Great Santini, Apocalypse Now, Stalin, open range, secondhand lion, to kill a mockingbird Need I say more.. His acting is fantastic, and his role transformation great too. A pleasure in every role he's had, and worthy of the title "actor". ❤😍🙏
True Grit, Deep Impact, Falling Down, Jack Reacher....All strong supporting roles.
and the cabby in Bullitt
Duvall did them all GREAT !!!!! NONE CAN COMPARE !!!
I love him in "Tender Mercies"! Such a sweet film.
The sensible one in godfather
The ten minutes of scenes starting when Gus says Lorrie should stay with Clara, and then says goodbye them....Never seen such a moving sequence in a western. Editing, music, dialogue, Diane Ladd, and the great Robert Duvall! "Lorrie darlin'...."
Lane.
His portrayal of Bluebonnet! Open Range is so under rated... such a great movie.
One of my favourite movies of all time. Definitely in my Top 10.
Loved him as Lt. Col. "Bull" Meechum in The Great Santini.
@Tom Brennan - Exactly! My fav Duvall role. A close second is Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now.
" It was business Sonny " he wasn't no slouch in The Godfather
Hagen
He made The Godfather real.
Tom Hagen, "I'M German/Irish." "A fastidious/drunk!", Bob Newhart.
He is one of the very few actors that always gave 100%
Always liked him, but when I saw “Tender Mercies”, I saw the greatness. That being said, Lonesome Dove is my favorite film of his. There are few actors who have the range that Duvall has brought to the screen.
Agreed!! Powerful work in that one!
Augustus Mcrae....Lori darlin !
Lonesome Dove was the best western l've ever seen and l've seen many over the decades. The casting was excellent and the acting was superb across the board, Jones, Duval, Lane, et al...all superb! I felt like l knew the characters personally. The editing was excellent too.
I used to wonder how Duval's southern drawl was so consistent, only to find out that he was raised in MD and his Dad was from Virginia, so he heard the southern accent a lot.
Have you seen open range with Robert Duvall best western ever.
A lot of people have said Gus McCrae in the Lonesome Dove miniseries is his best role. Lonesome Dove is epic in and of itself. So many fine actors in that series. If you have not read the book you have no idea how truly great that story is. Even an eight hour series can't do it justice.
should be required reading in schools!
No doubt. I've seen the series 100 times over. Just finished the book yesterday while also watching the series as I went along. The book was so much better it made me mad at the series. Granted, lonesome dove is still my favorite western of all time
He seems like he was born for his role in Open Range. Any western for that matter.
Bluebonnet Spearman....
Best name too in a western....
@@blueskyz8097 Yeah, but you've got to promise you don't tell anyone! Lol
MikeyD22 if you haven’t seen lonesome dove, then I HIGHLY recommend you go watch it. Its his best performance ever in my opinion.
@@a1kev I have seen it and I agree that he was awesome in that role too. I guess I just liked Open Range the best because of the other characters too. Both great westerns for sure.
@COONHUNTER #1 In your opinion. In my and many others, Open Range was far superior.
He is a genius in more ways than acting. He gives that profession a lot of class.
His role in "The Apostle" tops them all. Should have won an Oscar for that.
Indubitably ! Mr Duvall never fails to deliver !!
@bigdawg7262 In the "Apostle," Sonny routinely listens to a police scanner to locate accident victims so he can witness to them and pray for their salvation and give them a chance to be saved if the are lost before they die.
Great actor all the way around. Gus in Lonesome Dove is definitely my favorite of his characters and Hub in Secondhand lions is my second favorite.
Robert Duvall has had such a long and legendary film career. One of my favorite roles of his was his Academy Award winning role as "Mac Sledge" in "Tender Mercies" (1983).
ooh that was a good movie.
Just finished watching Lonesome Dove for probably the 100th time. One of my favorite movies of all time, and it's because of Robert Duvall and the way he portrays Augustus McRae.
Thought it was one Tommy Lee Jones’ best, too!
Augustus McCray.
Texas ranger ret.
THE DIEING BED SCENE IS LONESOME DOVE,TOOK THE AIR OUT OF ME,HE IS A GENIUS ACTOR,NEVER TO BE DUPLICATED OR SEEN THE LIKES OF AGAIN,HIM AND TOMMY LEE JONES,TOGETHER,OSCAR MATERIAL
That scene hits the spot. Legends
"It's been quite a party!" Reduces me to rubbish...yet, I live to see it again!
Wow, very good video. I have been a fan of Duvall for many years and consider him one of the finest actors of all time. An amazing talented man.
Amen to that !
One of the best in his field, loved all his movies and parts hes played, a very professional actor, nobody comes closer to bringing his roles to life!
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe.
Hands down... Augustus McCrae in "Lonesome Dove". And he’s had some great roles.
I agree - and he has had some great roles.
Tender Mercies for me with the bonus that he wrote the "Hold the Ladder" song.
I have to admit I loved the movie Tender Mercies, he and Tess Harper are both brilliant! That being said, still, nothing beats Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove! 💛
@@edith121454 - Hard choices. His role in To Kill a Mockingbird, although brief was brilliant.
Lonesome Dove, Tender Mercies and Secondhand Lions. His performances are great in everything he's acted in, but those are my personal favorites.
He is tremendous in everything he does!
In Tender Mercies when he walked outside and began singing "Wings of a Dove" after learning of his daughters death, I thought were the most amazing two minutes of his brilliant career.
I certainly have a notion to second THAT emotion !!
His role in Open Range, was a masterpiece!
I agree best western of all time.
@@ricktempleton3415 maybe I need to watch again. I was getting pissed the whole movie cuz I thought their talents were wasted.
Bluebonnet!
Tender Mercies. A beautifully understated performance by Robert and the rest of the cast.
the great Santini wow what a movie
ON TARGET THOM uncle sam yep
That's right sports fans.
I was hoping that someone else would like this movie.
Bull freakin’ Meechum
“I am the Great Santini”
Love Duvall. So many great performances. THe Apostle stands out among so many great roles.
Second Hand Lions and Open Range, two amazing performances (among many) from Mr. Duvall.
A favorite actor of mine, his western roles were top notch!
I also liked him as Jesse James in The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid.
Uncle Hub ❤️
Just saw this movie today... What an amazing film and acting ❤️
I've watched most of his movies and my fav. is Open Range, although I love all his work
I became intrigued by him decades ago when I first saw him as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird.
For me it began with THX 1138, which I saw before To Kill a Mockingbird, though I don't remember which role came first. I also saw him in an even earlier role on TV in The Twilight Zone, as a mentally disabled man who treated the dolls in a dollhouse as real people.
I forgot about boo! He’s forever Gus to me. You stole my heart, darlin!
Well Done Bobby...she's a real stunner....definitely a keeper.
I really liked him in The Apostle, which he also directed.
Gordon Reiher Absolutely!
Me too ! That was a very underrated film ! One of his BEST roles and performances !
One my favorites , to bad they don't show it at all .
Amazing realistic movie, many scenes felt so real
Gus in lonesome dove will always be my favorite role you played
Sonny in "The Apostle" is my absolute favorite. According to Mr. Duvall, he considered it his third best performance. I never saw his portrayal of Stalin.
I totally forgot about that movie, thanks for the reminder!
I concur.
Been a favorite of mine for many years but I totally fell in love with Lonesome Dove. And To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite movie of all time but I didn't know Robert Duvall at the time.
Very few people knew of Robert Duvall when "To Kill A Mockingbird" came out in 1962. That was his first feature film. Though he had acted on Broadway & been seen in some television roles.
In a much older movie, Robert played in an obscure movie titled "Tomorrow". His demure in the role was uncanny.
also the scene in dove when he approaches julys camp at night is an incredible piece of acting
I think his best role was in lonesome Dove but he was really good in The Judge with Robert Downey Jr. He totally carried that movie. His small parts in Slingblade and To Kill a Mockingbird are outstanding. He conveys so much with little or no dialogue.
If I'm not mistaken, his part as Arthur "Boo" Radley, in "To Kill a Mockingbird " was his first movie part. It's amazing, how good he was, with so few words.
He played Ned Pepper in True Grit. A great bad guy!
My favorites are Secondhand Lions and Open Range, where he affects many slight subleties you don't understand or see until you listen to the diectors commertary.
I haven't seen any bad roles played by ROBERT DUVALL I don't think I can say that about any other actor n there's been a helluva lot of movies been made I think that statement says a lot about ole Bob DUVALL
Didnt bob win an oscar for tender mercies. He played a drunk country singer
me too
Oh Yeh!!! Let's get Mikey & Bobby together for a flick...1 of my absolute favorites!!!
One of my favorite movies! Actually most of the movies he was in are among my favorites! When he started rattling off all those things he did when he was in the convince store or the speech in the middle of the night wrapped in a blanket was just GREAT! I would like to think there were,at one time, folks just like those 2!
Absolutely one of my all time favorite actors. Augustus 'Gus' for sure.
Herr Oberst Radl, without the eye patch.
A great actor that never gets old.
Bravo, Mr. Duvall. Bravo.
Robert Duvall is an amazing actor. I have never seen him in a roll I didn’t like. But The Judge I think is his best role. Him and RDJ were phenomenal. One of the few movies that makes me tear up.
He used to come to my cousin's birthday parties in Warrenton Virginia. Played football with him several times. Sometimes we see him in the grocery store. One of my all time favorite actors.
Awesome!
He was great in everything. My fave was Tender Mercies. He even released an album of the sound track, he did the singing and it was great.
Duvall was masterful in "Open Range". He's on my list of 10 best American actors.
"That aint the way, pard!"
Robert Duvall has had just a diverse and awesome film career and for him to choose just one standout performance out of many would be extremely difficult. The one role that did it for me was his Academy Award winning role as "Mac Sledge" in the film, "Tender Mercies." (1983).
My three favorites with him is Lonesome Dove, Second hand lions and The Apostle.
Godfather was so different for him and shocked me how versatile he is. But for westerns Lonesome Dove blows them all away.
My man...my favorite actor of all time..never lets you down!
Like gene hackman ,all of Roberts movies are good
Same vintage & always dependable...
You said it. Oddly enough, those are my two favorite actors of today. Between them, absolutely unforgettable roles.
Their movies aren't always good, but they're always excellent in all of them!
I loved Robert Duvall as Gus in Lonesome Dove. I can’t imagine anyone else in that role.
The Apostle was absolutely amazing.
To me, Open Range and Lonesome Dove were the BEST movies. You felt like you were there, you forget about real life. Thanks
“Charlie don’t surf!”
HIS BEST ACTING ROLE EVER WAS ROBERT DUVALL IN “ The Apostle “!!!!!!! OH MY LORD HE WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
I first remember seeing him in " To Kill a Mockingbird". In his portrayal of Boo Radley, he is seen only briefly, speaks not at all, and makes a lasting impression that I have never forgotten.
true
He's mostly known for westerns but I like him in days of thunder and Jack reacher. Him and tom cruise do well together
Duvall has delivered some of the greatest lines in cinema history, but "That's pretty bold talk from a one-eyed fat man" to John Wayne still males me laugh.
He's an extraordinary actor! All roles he plays become 'characters"!
I enjoy watching this man, he seems to have a good heart.
i think he was the bes in the western "lonesome dove" as gus a texas ranger.he made the comment he never knew he was famous until after he done that movie.it was one of the greatest westerns ever made
Gus from lonesome dove
Danny russo you are right
And Arthur "Boo" Radley from "To Kill A Mockingbird"....his screen debut !
Loved all his western movies. One of my favorites as well is Tender Mercies, Mack Sledge
One of the few movies I can watch over and over....Classic.
One of my favorite roles he played was as Walter, the Cuban barber, in "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway" (1993).
I was half-way through the movie before I even realized it was him! He was that convincing!
true grit, ' I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man! '
Ben Bricker fill your hand you sonovabitch!
I call that bold talk for a one handle shinebox!!!
Robert Duvall?
He can also play a good bad guy.
@@rmsmith2396 the original 1969 version
The of roll of Fentry in ," Tomorrow " bought me to tears. Many of our elders either alone, on farms or in the mountains were faced with such hard hardships. Its wasn't easy being poor but they tried their very best with what they knew/had...which was often nothing.
This old man is my favourite actor. It took a long time for me to recognize him on his role in Godfather. Aged very well.
My personal favorite is the very under-rated role of Euliss "Sonny" Dewey in the movie "The Apostle". Duvall kills it in an understated but powerful performance.
One of my favorite actors.
I just started lonesome dove, going to finish the last episode tomorrow. The other actors are amazing, Tommy Lee, Diane Lane, all the others play their parts amazingly..... but Roberts as Gus, it is the most well acted part I've seen in ANY western. It's like they plucked an old cowboy right out of the 1870s
“The Apostle”. This was Duvall’s project from start to finish. Wonderful cameos from real preachers. Farrah Fawcett puts in a fine dramatic performance.
Duvall is a seriously underrated actor for sure
I personally think two of his most underrated movies are The Great Santini and Tender Mercies.
The guy in the Twilight Zone obsessed with the museum dollhouse. He never surpassed that. No one could
His Open Range performance just perfect I´d say.
Gus in Lonesome Dove was great, but the character study as the major in the movie Mash with Donald Sutherland was a magnificent!
Gustace Macray was one of his finest roles ever
He played a magnificent Robert E.Lee in Gods and Generals! Best actor ever! 👍🏼
