@@MagnitudePersonthe comic is amazing and if you know the history of it you wouldn’t say that, the movie is a good adaptation and expands on it, so both are good
Said this before and I'll say it again, 'The Crow' is lightning in a bottle. Everything works like a well oiled fine tuned machine. The direction, the production design, the soundtrack, the script, the editing, and the cast. Everything works. This is, for me, is the high bar for what films based on a comic can be and it did it all with a budget of around $25 million. Brandon Lee as Eric Draven was the absolute zenith of 90's cool because it was such a powerful performance for being rooted in humanity and compassion.
@lofihour2506 Yeah. Because my name is Brandon, I decided to look up the meaning of the name. I couldn't believe it. I can't help but wonder if Brandon Lee knew that. Incidentally, my middle name is actually Lee. Completely by coincidence. I was named after my aunt.
I always felt the "Sarahs mum" arc in this was really understated. In all the death and carnage he put a family back together. The breakfast scene was lovely.
There was a deleted scene related to that, where after inspecting the drug needle, Eric is attacked by a crazed Funboy who woke up in the shower. He slashes at Eric with the razor, but since Draven used his powers to help Darla, his wounds don't heal - this is why he suddenly appears with electrical tape on his body for the rest of the film. Alex Proyas liked the look so much that he left it in, even though narratively it counts as a continuity error.

You know what really still gets me every time I rewatch this movie? It's that Eric Draven is a really good, decent and kind person, even after becoming the crow. The way he talks to people, the way he interacts with kids, he doesn't become some dark angel of vengeance that goes on a killing spree exactly. He still has so much hard, and the way Brandon Lee plays those scenes interacting with other people still makes me smile. He's the kind of characters that you cheer when he takes out the bad guys, but you love just as much seeing him have a moment to be around decent people where he can let his guard down a bit.
And that is what the reboot (or whatever you want to call it) forgot, they forgot to make Eric likeable, make him a decent person that had something terrible happen to them and needed to do some terrible things to some terrible people to make things right, but never losing his humanity, kindness, and love.

It was some time in early 1994. My friends and I were at our local arcade, waiting in line to play Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition. Suddenly, a hum fills the air, as the TVs littered around the arcade played the hypnotic and chilling "Pain and Retribution" song as the trailer for "The Crow" played. I'm not exaggerating when I say that EVERYONE in the arcade stopped what they were doing and watched the TVs, mesmerized by the trailer. Time froze in that instant. As soon as it finished playing, everyone was buzzing about this movie coming out. It's a memory I'll likely never forget. R.I.P. Mr. Brandon Lee. Your spirit lives on.
It’s interesting you bring up the Joker comparison. Both Brandon & Heath died giving the best final performance of their careers. May they both rest in peace. We will forever treasure what you left us with ❤️.
Fun fact: the stunt double they used to shoot the scenes with Eric returning to the appartment, where his face is obscured by shadows, that's Chad Stahelski. You may know him as one the creators of the John Wick franchise. He and Brandon Lee were friends, trained together martial arts under grand master Dan Inosanto ( student & close friend of Bruce Lee).
The apartment scene with Eric and albrect is one of the best scenes in the movie. Everything about it is great. It was amazing acting between Ernie and Brandon. Ernie playing the cop being compassionate but had to be professional. Brandon playing the hero but also hanging on to being human. “ I thought I’d use your front door” another incredible line.
As a kid, the story of what happened to Brandon Lee and the movie was a huge topic among my peers. The one day I finally rented it VHS, I remember being blown away with the emotional depth the movie brought to the comic book movie genre. The performance Brandon Lee put on inspired countless others and 30 years later and still remains my favorite movie.
The Crow and Dark City cemented Alex Proyas as one of the most underrated directors of the 90’s. The dude has a serious eye for beautifully dark visuals.
I love your videos like this where you take an older movie you know by heart and thoroughly break down what’s great about it. Most critics don’t bother with things not at the box office cus it doesn’t get clicks, and I appreciate that you do. Thanks, Jeremy.
The Brandon Lee Crow movie is still one of my favorite movies, and it will always hold a magic that will last forever. From the soundtrack to the mood to the actors, everything is just epic and perfect, and I will always love it....Long Live Brandon Lee ❤️ aka Eric Draven
The line "Mother is the name of GOD for a child" hits harder than the entire The Crow remake. That movie was just intense in so many ways. It really showed how pure Eric's soul was because he was brought back as this THING of pure vengeance and yet he couldn't help helping the people he cared about in life. It shows that no matter how dark, the light and love of a good soul will force its way to the surface.
Cool thing is that that line was from the comic. O’Barr himself had that much heart to him, even when feeling like sh*t, that he thought to have Eric say that as a character having empathy, seeing essentially a child’s god having fallen so low as to shack up with funboy sharing needles.
Nah it’s literally a quote from William Tackery in the 1800’s. All these “cool” quotes that people attribute to making the original better than the reboot are all ripped from different authors.
I'm 43 years old, and The Crow has been my favorite movie since 1994. 30 years now. I was so stoked when the 30 year anniversary edition came out because I didn't get to see it in the theatre 30 years ago. Most tragic character story ever!
My mom loved this movie, used to watch it with her all the time. We didn’t have the greatest relationship and she passed away many years ago. Watching the crow makes me feel like I’m seeing the best of my mom. Thank you Brandon, it can’t rain all the time!
Showed it to my oldest son about a month ago and was relieved at how well it has held up and it wasn't just nostalgia. He loved it, as have I for all these years. RIP Brandon!
Dude, every year for at least a decade, I rewatch this movie either on October 30th or October 31st. No matter how many times I watch it, I still have a blast. As soon as it gets to October 1st, the countdown begins for me. This tradition will continue for me until I die.
This movie and soundtrack have a special place in my heart. I met a young woman back when this was released and feel deeply in love with her. Though we are no longer together, whenever I watch "The Crow" and listen to the soundtrack, I wonder how she is doing and what her life it like now. I will grow old watching and listening to this timeless classic.
I love the choices they made to establish Eric & Shelley’s relationship through flashbacks and how the city doesn’t look fake. The music, the city is great at setting the atmosphere of the movie. The villians are villians and not misunderstood. There are so many classic lines in this movie. Great actors too.
Regarding the villains, if you started the modern trope of trying to present the "villain" as a misunderstood victim, Top Dollar would be disgusted and he would not tolerate it. Top Dollar knew what he was doing and why he was doing it.
@@davidblue819 He is the epitome of the corrupt, perverted billionaire. Power, control, no consequences, no one to challenge him, and grew greedy, perverted, sadistic, and bored. Same as P-Diddy, Epstein, Musk, Gates, and Trump.

Thursday, October 31st. The city streets are crowded for the holiday. Even with the rain. Hidden in the chaos is the element, waiting to strike like snakes. And I'm there too. Watching. 2 years of nights have turned me into a nocturnal animal. I must choose my targets carefully. It's a big city. I can't be everywhere. Is perfect for tomorrow.
Your words actually brought a tear to my eye. Everything about this movie is just pure cinematic perfection. Back in the day I owned the Neca 18" talking Crow figure, one of the quotes was... "It can't rain all the time". I sold it many moons ago. I haven't got the stomach to watch the new version, but as a tribute to Brandon I went on evilBay and repurchased the figure.
I've thought about this for years. A more faithful adaptation of The Crow isn't possible. In the comic, Eric is an unstoppable force. That doesn't work in a movie. The 1994 movie is the best we will ever get. Totally agree, this movie remains awesome.
Watched it earlier this year with my 16 year old son. He loved it, so it absolutely still holds up. The Crow was in the tiny DVD section in my local BlockBuster when it was first released. I can proudly say that my friend and I had watched every single DVD in that section at one point as DVD was so new and was mostly only in PC's at that point. I had a DVD drive, a MPEG2 card and serial IR remote for DVD playback and the TV was connected to the PC. Was a cutting edge set up at the time. Fond memories.
For I definitely think it does. The biggest piece of it I love is how Eric is portrayed. There isn’t a single second where you aren’t rooting for him to get revenge. It still has a great visual style, some sweet action, and Brandon really gave a great performance.
My gf was interested in seeing the Crow reboot after seeing the trailer some months ago but had never seen the original. While she didn't like the reboot, she did appreciate some of the aspects of it. I told her we should watch the OG because its much, much better. She didn't really care for that either. Lol. Her biggest issues was that it felt like things happened too fast and things weren't explained enough. I keep trying to tell her, that's what makes it so good!
I don't fully blame her. As someone who watched the movie for the first time last year, the movie did feel a bit rushed for me. I wouldn't mind seeing one or two action scenes or a few more moments with Sarah and her mom or with the police officer (don't remember his name now). But at the end of the day, it is really good
@@WaltDevil060 i dont think we'll know whether there was supposed to be more character stuff, but we should also remember the film was made back when shorter tighter films were the norm. i'm not saying it NEEDED to break the norm to earn its acclaim, but i do think whats in there matters and there is nearly no wasted scenes. im sure a film critic can find some waste or voids, but the story gets told. and its erics short post death tale. not really sure it should be called an action film though?
@@Ducayneau I completely agree with you. I'm 36 and my gf is 32 though. I've seen the original numerous times. She had heard of the crow but had never seen it and wasn't interested until she saw the trailer for the new one. She likes stuff like that with that aesthetic. I have to say for background, she is a huge fan of CW shows...so I can totally see how the reboot would appeal to her. Her biggest issue with the OG though is the fact that things happened so quickly. Eric becoming the Crow with little to no explaination. Their romance (while being WAY more believeable than the one in the reboot) just being told in flashbacks. I kept having to explain to her that it's a revenge tale. That's the focus with the context of the story being there to fuel Eric's intention.
Nailed it as usual sir. One of my favorite movies to watch when I was a teenager, and one of the best adaptations of a comic book I've ever seen. Timeless film.
This is one of those videos of yours where I already have an idea of what you're going to say, but I click on it and watch any way. Thanks for bringing a few more eyes to the 1994 original. Awesome movie with a tragic tie to history.
It's heartwarming to know that when I was 17 in 1995 and started a family tradition of watching The Crow on Devil's Night annually, that others also started the same tradition. Absolutely love this movie. Rest In Peace Brandon Lee
I was 10 yrs old when my family left me at the neighbors' to go out eating while I was sick. The 14 yr old daughter put on The Crow. It was raining outside and I was in a dreamlike state bc of the medicine I was taking. Needless to say, I was very impacted by the movie [and soundtrack] It shaped my life till this day. I have 3 quotes, all Eric's crow ''calling cards'' and a quote from Brandon Lee tattooed on me. And i married a woman named Michelle.
The crow was supposed to be a franchise. Brandon Lee actually signed on to do several crow movies. There's a deleted character, an old man, guiding Eric. He ostensibly told him at one point since he deviated from his mission by getting the deadbeat mom clean, he had no way back home. He would have been stuck wandering the earth. Deleting that guy could also account for somewhat choppy editing
As a kid who grew up in the 90’s, I loved this movie and watched it way too young on VHS at my uncles house. Just such an amazing movie. However, I can’t watch this and not think about Sting turning into the Crow to fight Hollywood Hogan and the NWO in 1996/97.
Great review! Saw the Crow in the theaters in the summer of 1994. I remember how i pulled into the theater with my girl that night till this very day. Weird hows thats remained with me. It was stellar movie, it played so well into what was going on in the 90's and for me was a life adding experience. The 2 soundtracks were phenomena by the well known bands artists as well as the music written by Graeme Revell have stayed with me these 3 decades. Highly recommend to those who have not seen it. Everyone I have recommended it too and watched it with loved it. Cheers!
This girl I’m acquainted with recently posted on Facebook that she watched the new one, despite having never seen the original, and “LOVED it.” I told her she owed it to herself to watch the original because it’s a classic. Her response was “I tried and couldn’t get through it.” 😑
My favorite movie of all time. Great performance by Bandon Lee, the soundtrack is flawless, the dark tone of it is masterful and the best comic book adaption. Hell Yeah it still holds up.
Absolutely it does, watched it til my VHS copy wore out. Sniffled my way through the heartbreaking flashbacks, cheered derisively at the villains' offings, reflected during the interlude moments (Eric's guitar playing on the roof? Magic), & totally fulfilled by the ending. Totally agree with you Jeremy- an absolute classic.🏆

He says that in the video.
People always be commenting before even watching the video.
Fun fact: Jeremy already told us
The apartment scene with Eric and albrect is one of the best scenes in the movie.
And then, that same director went and made Gods of Egypt.
@ I can’t even begin to comprehend how the fuck that happened.
@@somerandolad And "I, Robot" which was the beginning of the end....
I love your videos like this where you take an older movie you know by heart and thoroughly break down what’s great about it. Most critics don’t bother with things not at the box office cus it doesn’t get clicks, and I appreciate that you do. Thanks, Jeremy.
RIP Brandon Lee. Such a classic
@@phill6504 a similar line was used in the first Silent Hill movie but I forgot it was said first in The Crow 😊
@joshuasmith4643 "Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children." to ACTUALLY be exact.
@baneintherain yeah I know I still fucked it up lol.
Yes, yes it does. It definitely does *SOAR* past expectations.
It holds up a LOT better than the remake.
It is an OK film, but a bad adaptation of the comic book.
It's better than the new remake. It was a quieter piece using practical effects and Brandon gave a haunting performance that deserves an Oscar.
I absolutely love when you review a movie that you thoroughly enjoy. Just your entire demeanor is different.
This is so amazing.. you should definitely do more reviews for movies that are old..
Dude, every year for at least a decade, I rewatch this movie either on October 30th or October 31st. No matter how many times I watch it, I still have a blast. As soon as it gets to October 1st, the countdown begins for me. This tradition will continue for me until I die.
Yes. You're welcome.
"There ain't no comin' back. There ain't no comin' back!"
Enjoying all these throwback reviews. Thanks 😊
So many good one liners that I still remember today. "It can't rain all the time" "There ain't no comin back!"
One of my favorite films. Awesome soundtrack.
What a perfect review. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Like for real. They didn't roll down my face, but the tears were there. Thank you.
Yes. Thanks for watching
First 15 minutes of this film beat whole new Crow and the sequels. It's amazing how much energy, style and mood it has. Love this film.
Yeah it's crazy but the city not looking fake but instead actually like a real hellscape on earth makes it so much more authentic feeling.
One of the best movies ever. I believe the impact the movie made on those who were alive when it was released was profound. This movie will always be in my collection.
I watched today in glorious 4k, and yes, it still holds up. 10/10. The Crow is my favourite movie of all time.
Does The Crow still hold up?
Yes! This is one of my favorite movies of all time! Excellent analysis of this movie!
one of my favourite things about the crow is that it has such a sense of style and a unique voice
"He's a scene stealer": dinner shot right out my nose--so painful, but tears of joy. That is a sentiment I share, up to now unheard. Thank you.
Love Matt Reeves The Batman.
I literally just watched it for the first time yesterday (Oct 29th, unknowingly) and absolutely loved it.
Great review of an all time great. I was a huuuuge Brandon Lee fan. Well done as always Jeremy.
Tell me we’re kinda centennial without telling me we’re that old! 0:11 😮
That fact straight up gave me whiplash
But at the end of the day, it is really good
@@WaltDevil060 i dont think we'll know whether there was supposed to be more character stuff, but we should also remember the film was made back when shorter tighter films were the norm. i'm not saying it NEEDED to break the norm to earn its acclaim, but i do think whats in there matters and there is nearly no wasted scenes. im sure a film critic can find some waste or voids, but the story gets told. and its erics short post death tale. not really sure it should be called an action film though?
tiktok has obliterated the younger generation's attention span.
@Ducayneau exactly 💯 the movie is not rushed its just fast paced and you have to keep up
@@Ducayneau I completely agree with you.
My all time favourite movie. I've watched it atleast 200 times in 30 years.
This is why I LOVE you Jeremy!!!!! Pls never stop bringing us these amazing videos!!!!
Nothing HW remakes will never be this. A true classic Jeremy a true gem.
Hats off to you, sir. Amazing literary analysis of this movie. One of my all time favorites and you did it justice in your review. Thank you.
I used to watch The Crow every year on Halloween.
Same... and now I'm going to start again
should watch it 30th of October, Devils Night. but any time is good for a great movie
This is one of those videos of yours where I already have an idea of what you're going to say, but I click on it and watch any way.
Thanks for bringing a few more eyes to the 1994 original. Awesome movie with a tragic tie to history.
Jeremy, I love the review but you forgot one thing the soundtrack the soundtrack is so of that time is one of the reasons it can never be duplicated
It's heartwarming to know that when I was 17 in 1995 and started a family tradition of watching The Crow on Devil's Night annually, that others also started the same tradition. Absolutely love this movie. Rest In Peace Brandon Lee
9:32 when you restrain a film maker you make him more creative
I was 10 yrs old when my family left me at the neighbors' to go out eating while I was sick. The 14 yr old daughter put on The Crow. It was raining outside and I was in a dreamlike state bc of the medicine I was taking. Needless to say, I was very impacted by the movie [and soundtrack] It shaped my life till this day. I have 3 quotes, all Eric's crow ''calling cards'' and a quote from Brandon Lee tattooed on me. And i married a woman named Michelle.
What a coincidence just watched you old review of this . perfect timing 😂
Her response was “I tried and couldn’t get through it.” 😑
Unfriend.
@@playedout148 I’d be lying if I said I didn’t consider it. There are plenty of other reasons but this is a biggie.
Heresy
That's just pure brain rot.
Drop her like it's hot.
My favorite movie of all time. Great performance by Bandon Lee, the soundtrack is flawless, the dark tone of it is masterful and the best comic book adaption. Hell Yeah it still holds up.
I will be watching it again this Devil’s Night 👌🏼
Props for dropping this on Devil’s Night!
The Crow is my favourite film of all time!
Fingers crossed that you're saving Terrifier 3 for a Halloween review.
nope he didn't review the previous two so probably ain't gonna review this.
@JOTHISHPRABURP that's a bummer.
A classic
The soundtrack was so iconic and the movie is a time capsule. Thanks for the review
0:52 It's funny and sad because the actor they got for the new Crow movie looks a lot like the graphic novel version. They could've made it work lol
Yet it was beyond shit. Such a waste of
Brandon Lee's interview at the end of the director's cut VHS was so good. He explains his take on the Crow as a character.
It holds up like a MOAFUKA
This takes me back to the good old days , thank you for reminding me of this beauty.
Unpopular opinion; The Crow is better than Avatar.
How is this an unpopular opinion? The Crow is better, period.
It's 2 different genres...
Super mario bros 1993 is better than Avatar, I stand by that.
@M1keSpade i say it because I had this idea for years. Both the Avatar and the Crow are like 2 sides of the same coin. Both are not just person. But titles.
Avatar is mindless popcorn entertainment, pretty visuals but nothing else to offer.
Was devastated when i learned about Brandon's death. I was so happy his last movie came out as good as it was. Thanks for the video
thank you for going back and reviewing a 10/10 classic! Pls still Review Death stranding whenever you get a chance 😭
One of my favorite films and hearing Jeremy talk so passionately about it makes me so happy! I’ll always remember and miss Brandon Lee 🖤
