Its seems Windows 11 24H2 has a new file called appraiser.sdb that could theoretically block you from getting to Windows 11 version 24H2 upgrade. Its can also cause applications not to work like StartAllBack and ExplorerPatcher and many more.

Whose system is it though? We're not talking about applications, as in Open Office. We are talking about the user interface. Perhaps Microsoft think it's theirs anyway, so they should be able to decide how it works. It sucks though. I don't like how the default Win 11 taskbar icons just combine multiple processes. It's nice to be able to turn that off so that you see separate windows.

Microsoft never should have made Windows 8 or 10 or 11. They should have stopped at Windows 7 and just rolled out updates to that. Windows 7 was the best Windows and I was very happy with that. Then Windows 8 came and they got rid of the start menu and everything. I hated the Metro Theme. Then when I heard we were not going to be able to disable automatic updates in Windows 10 that was it for me. I was never going to upgrade to Windows 10 so I stayed on Windows 7 and 8 for as long as I could. Then most of the software did not work anymore because no web browsers were supporting Windows 7 or 8. I installed Linux Mint and have been using it now for two years. I think I did the right thing switching to Linux because I could never get on with Windows 11. I don't even want to use it. I took one look at it when I bought my new laptop that had Windows 11 on there and I hated it. I was glad to uninstall it to get it off of my computer. I installed Linux Mint on that laptop as well.

Microsoft is also blocking third party apps that simplify the process of setting a browser as your default. They're not blocking users from chaning it manually via the settings just just in the registry and other ways. they claim the software being blocked by a driver that was added back in windows 8 to mitigate a vulnerabilty. pretty sure we will see a noticable decline in market share as well as a lull in people upgrading to windows 11.

It starts with blocking innocent tweaks like this. Then it moves to blocking pretty much everything that’s not in the Microsoft store. If it’s gonna be like this, I might just stay on Windows 10 way after support has ended. Regardless of it being less secure. Now this is a code specifically written for blind users, And contains no visuals at all. However over the last eight or so years, I’ve actually had to make folder exclusions for the folder where I run these applications. This has not been an issue over the last eight years, as you have the ability to do this. All you have to do is just add an exclusion in Windows defender. And then make that the folder where you run all those games. And as somebody who’s blind, I can’t afford a lot of applications as I’m on a lot less than the minimum wage here. So I do have to pirate things from time to time. I also run a lot of old applications in emulators as you say. And all they need to do, is just decide that we can’t. That’s the scary thing. And I mean: why do they care if we modify windows? It’s not affecting them, we are usually still paying for it.

I now use Linux which is very much like Windows 7 so I don't have to spend hours setting up changes to it like I had to with Windows 8. Because Linux Mint and now Debian which I also use has everything I want. I am sure most Windows users will feel much more at home on Linux Mint or other Linux distros like it. The main motives are most likely (a) maximising profit and (b) Microsoft thinking they know what users want better than users do, and I sense a general increase in the emphasis on (a). Well Brian I have only just got 23H2 installed on my main laptop and it is simply amazing how Microsoft keep on changing the versions. Now I fail to see how or why Microsoft do not want anyone having these tweaking apps on their machines apart from making anyone use their proprietary apps and raising their revenue plus being even more invasive than ever!!. My other concern is for the Windows 11 I have installed on my older Ivy Bridge desktop (22H2) using the bypass of not having TPM or compliant CPU on the machine being made unusable when that version 23H2 and/or 24H2 are made available for download and install. So I am just wondering if there is some way of stopping any such update being downloaded and installed??

Stardock, which also develops similar product Start11 has shed some light on the situation in one of their posts. It appears all Microsoft is doing is shoring up some legacy code, which these two applications are relying on. This is why they are blocked. Stardock has written their own replacement taskbar without relying on Windows components so are unaffected. Internal private APIs being utilized is a rather shortsighted move by any developer as they are subject to change. That's precisely why ExplorerPatcher has that failsafe. StartAllBack probably only relies on a small portion which is why it can be made to work.

When applying a patch, you have to have exactly the thing you're trying to patch present. Otherwise the patch is just going to wreck the functionality because it interjects itself in the wrong places.
Oh and the setup wizard was really just talking about language packs. They're designed for each specific build number so they need to be removed before uograding.

MX-Linux KDE edition has three benefits for you here I think.
      1. KDE allows for massive amounts of customization so if you like tweaking your UI experience then KDE is definitely the GUI for you!
      2. MX-Linux supplies a tool for creating your own install of MX-Linux with all your installed apps and users and settings allowing a great system restore but also allowing easy replication of the same set up on another laptop.
      3. Recently MX-linux added another tool to save user settings and allow reload so a new install can be quickly restored to the same state it was before. This tool also allows for settings to be translated to a new version (though I doubt it will woek between KDE 5 and KDE 6.) This last one could be very helpful when upgrading because, frankly, to date, I have never managed to successfully upgrade a version of MX-Linux. Version 19 to 21 and 21 to 23 did NOT upgrade properly and required a re-install.
      Trying to be helpful.
The alternative for you though might be a rolling distro based on 'Arch' which always has the latest of everything as Windows 10 was intended to be... until Microsoft figured they could go back their old ways of forcing upgrades, forcing users to buy new hardware and profiting from the OEM payments.

All this sounds like it will be Illegal in Australia under consumer laws. They will need to give the ACCC very good reasons why or face anti competition charges. Some new proposed anti competition regulations have some real bite. Going are the days of fining monster companies a couple of hundred dollars, that is lost change in the car park scale. We are now talking 10% of product turnover and thousands of dollars, something to make corporate shareholders look up from their share profit cheques. Equally, I would also question its legality, or acceptability, under EU regulation.
The fact being, if MS find that third party addons are becoming over popular, then they should rethink their offering in terms of why. Its not good business the way they are going, unless they intend to make windows subscription and charge companies to use the windows platform. It will take about 10 years to create world wide software for an alternative platform or instantly make Apple bigger by the same amount that MS is now. So MS would reap a huge amount of cash from closing up the platform to software developers who do not pay for access and going subscription for some years. Where they could then relent and keep their smaller user base having made a heap and leap forth as new "we have seen the light" organisation, spruiking open platforms and so on.

You've posted this comment word-for-word on every video on the subject. No it's not, no they won't - when Microsoft demonstrates how (for example) StartAllBack works internally, the ACCC will (quite rightfully) classify it as a virus.

    • @jimspc07
      @jimspc07 4 місяці тому +1

@@throwaway6478 I wrote it here first then on one other site saying I had posted it here. "Every video on the subject" you say Yes, every video if they are the only two, and two hardly makes for a serial offence does it? Especially as MS may be seen as anti competitive from a developers perspective. One who is giving users something that many want and vindictive from a user perspective. So what are you bumping your gums about? You write "No it's not, no they wont" What's "not" and what's "wont" about then? I have no clue what not and what won't you are writing about they are not referenced.
The ACCC is not interested in viruses. Never was, never will be, unless it reduces competition. Bit like some EU regulations.
My second sentence in my original post says MS would need to give a good reason to the ACCC. Not that they could not give a reason or were incapable of giving a valid reason. The fact the MS changed the OS to block the addon applications means it could be construed as anti competition and even vindictive, taking away what the customer had paid for and was using seamlessly. The EU has found MS to be anti competition in some aspects as well.
Now. If you want to explain what you are writing about I will see if I can answer your questions. OK.

There are so many Linux distros and so many GUIs there is huge room for personal preference. I am a major KDE fan, if only for the user define keyboard shorcuts.
There is a website - Distrosea - that will allow you to play with the various distros online before any install so you can play with the various GUIs and see what suits you. Probably the UI is more of an issue than the distro itself. Note the following:
Ubuntu has gone kinda weird and lot of people would say "avoid."
Mint seems to be getting major traction as the go to for Windows users hoping over with a Windows like UI (Cinnamon) without the endless possible settings of KDE which causes confusion for many.
MX-Linux has been getting rave reviews and is very powerful especially the KDE edition.
Note that distros based on Debian like MX Linux tend to be stable but lean towards using outdated SW by default. (No KDE 6!)
Arch based distros are cutting edge all the way ad there is the risk of something breaking.
Ubuntu based distros like Mint (though Mint has a Debian edition) are a sort of halfway house but Ubuntu are going really strange of late.
      I say try DistroSea.

Why are so many people comparing this to Apple? You can install and run anything on MacOS, which is the direct equivalent to windows in this case. Apple don’t stop you like Microsoft are doing here. There’s a warning when you try to run something unsigned and downloaded from the internet, but they provide a workaround; the first time you run it you need to right-click it and select open, then confirm that you do actually want to run it. After that it opens as normal with a double click or from the applications menu. What Microsoft are doing is way worse. I wonder if this version will block debloat tools or the various methods of stopping them loading Teams back on to your start menu after you’ve uninstalled it. Really slimy practices coming out of Microsoft lately.
