Hi @Tony and Chelsea, thank you for your videos they are extremely informative, I intend on taking professional iris photos however the kit you have is out of my price range, would you be able to recommend a kit (camera and lens mainly) that would do a good job and is a little more budget friendly between 3k and 4k all in? TIA

You can reduce specular reflections by polarizing your strobe and then cross polarizing your camera lens.

These are the sort of videos that I love!! New ideas to be creative with photography really inspire me to try new things. Yes I know that gear related vids get more views (and because of your videos I am a proud owner of a Nikon D850), but new and different concepts to explore are such an amazing thing. Yes it could be considered that this topic was an easy one to think of, but I hadn't thought of it, and you two did! Mega thanks for both of you for this and PLEASE keep making new ones when the inspiration hits :)

The best way to make good photography of eye is to create amount of soft light all around, like you are sitting inside white tent in sunny day. In that conditions even iris of black eyes looks great.

A while back I wanted my eye Dr to look at a deformity I found with my iris that I noticed when I looked in a mirror. The problem I had was that the Dr routinely has his staff put in dilating drops before he sees me which means he would never see the problem I noticed after an eye surgery. My pupal was egg shaped and not round in a bright light. My challenge then was to take a macro shot of my eye, by myself - I live alone and none of the people I know were capable of helping out. I put my camera in 20fps mode and had to glance at a video output monitor to guesstimate focus. Out of a couple hundred shots, I captured a few frames in focus. I didn't produce fine art, but it was good enough for the Dr to understand my issue and let me know that I didn't need to worry about it. Having said all of that, it was a fun personal project.

I'd be curious to see what a 90mm macro lens and a ring flash would do. Did you try that? I guess there would be some risk of the catchlight screwing everything up.

Thank you for this "tutorial" and for sharing your settings.
I have been taking photos of irises as well and it is just so difficult to properly capture a sharp photo.
I think the thing that I am missing is the "chin stabilizer". I have been using LED panels on both sides to help with the lighting.
I am using Sony A7Riii + 90mm macro. I put the Raynox DCR-250 to make it bigger. In comparison, I also used the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM + tubes. I found that the tube+lens (at 70mm) produces a sharper and better result to my taste.

Thank you for your sharing. But I'm pretty desperate. I took iris photos with my smartphone (Google pixel 5) and a quality macro lens (moment). But I decided to invest in a real camera (Sony A7R2) with a macro lens (Sony FE 50mm F/2.8), a shutter release remote and a tripod. This material not that I am dissatisfied with the really incredible result that I could have with my smartphone (I have never seen anyone have results as good as mine with a smartphone), but to improve the ergonomics, personal comfort. With an invertible tripod, I am able to put the subject in a lying position, which is much more stable and comfortable... The problem is that after a few tests, with different settings (recommended on different tutorials), I don't I don't have satisfactory results, I know that one day I will find the appropriate settings, but for the moment this is not the case, I must provide a service in a few days and I will have to use my smartphone because I am not able to use my camera. I would love to find a photographer who can teach me how to use it and explain the settings to me. I don't have time right now to spend hours trying out different settings, and a pro could save me some time. I don't know, maybe the settings are particular on my Sony, for example we recommend ISO100 for the iris photo, but I heard that my camera with its CMOS sensor could go up more in the iso.. . I hope that someone could help me. 🙂

Pretty unprofessional. Why are You using a zoom lens at all? Here is all about sharpness and details. A zoom lens is an absolutely no go. Take a 105mm prime macro lens or something similar.
