I'm gunna be honest it sounds nothing like Johnny Cash... But that doesn't detract from how absolutely amazing phoenix was in this movie and the attempt to sing like him is really impressive. Johnny suffered from dark impulses, he never acted on them, but I think this is what endeared him to prisoners and convicts, in his heart he knew there was very little difference between him and them. I just love Johnny Cash.

I love Joaquin. He’s a genuine artist. No hollywood theatrics, no publicity stunts. This guy goes radio silent for big stretches, gets into a character on an amazingly deep level, then comes outa f--in nowhere when he’s ready with an outstanding performance, and thats regardless of the movie too. He does good even when the movie is bad.
I love the part at 1:50 where the man is looking like he got so much joy out of hearing the "dressed in black" part. He probably heard the real Cash perform it and it brought back memories

The first concert I even went to was to see Johnny Cash in Jackson, MS when I was a teenager. I watched this movie and watched Joqueim Phoenix become Johnny Cash right before my eyes.

The main reason is because if they used the recordings of the real Johnny cash, then it would make people ask the question of “Why should I bother staying on these scenes? I can easily listen to Johnny Cash”. Having Joaquin Phoenix sing instead of Johnny Cash works a lot better because it makes the movie more unique. I hope this made sense!
This is a faithful reproduction of a real concert. The live album is amazing. Johnny Cash was way more Rock n Roll than any Rock star in the last quarter of a century.

I just found out abt him from joker. After I saw his performance in that movie, I'm in love. And then I just realized that he played Theodore in Her, that shook me cause I've seen that movie before but I never even realized that was him lol since then, I checked his works and wow he really is a magnificent actor, he's just brilliant. As a former musician the scene at Sun studios gives me goosebumps being asked if this was the last song you could sing to the world would this be the song? That speaks to the heart and soul of true musicians!

I love reading the comments about him not winning an oscar for this one, feels like time travelling to the past, people loved his performance here, and yet it didnt get the satisfaction of being recognized as the best, I saw one comment that said "his time will come (to win an oscar)" and most likely it'll be Joaquin's version of Joker.

I just found out abt him from joker. After I saw his performance in that movie, I'm in love. And then I just realized that he played Theodore in Her, that shook me cause I've seen that movie before but I never even realized that was him lol since then, I checked his works and wow he really is a magnificent actor, he's just brilliant. His portrayal of Johnny cash in this movie is just remarkable.

As a former musician the scene at Sun studios gives me goosebumps being asked if this was the last song you could sing to the world would this be the song? That speaks to the heart and soul of true musicians!
