I think this is a very cool idea but to really make use of all that added bulk I think it needs to include a second xlr input and a video recorder that can record to an ssd. That would make this thing epic and I would buy one in a second! As it is now it adds a couple features but for me it’s not worth the bulk and weight; I’d rather put on the battery grip for better battery life and the xlr hotshoe adapter for two xlr inputs that you can use without phantom power.
I was thinking this, too. If it had an HDMI out, so that I could use an HDMI monitor or pipe out a signal to my director, better options for audio, and a V-Mount option for the battery, I would snap it up in a nanosecond. And if they created that same version for a Black Magic Pocket 4k (with some kind of trick for accessing the screen) they'd have a market killer on their hands.
Could you attach a mattebox and a follow focus to this? And if you’d be willing to, would you mind making a list of the additions you put on the rig itself so that other people who’re interested in your build can see how it fits together? Overall great video, thank you.
Yepp, you can attach anything that uses the standard 15mm rods to mount. There's a follow focus mounted for most of this video. Add some longer rails and there's plenty of room for a matte box.
Adam Murtland How long are the rails you’re using? Are they the default 8” or are they 12” or 18”? And do you think that a shoulder pad like the Lanparte shoulder pad would be able to be used instead of the shoulder pad you used? Can’t thank you enough for all the help.
I think they're 12" here. The Lanparte pad might work. It's tough to tell without owning it myself. There's a decent amount of room between the Scorpion and the rails to mount it.
Adam Murtland well I guess it is cool but depends on the price, I couldn't find the price anywhere and don't remover hearing it in the video u less you did mention it I'm sorry
So your DC Out ports available are just those two? The camera takes one so you can only power one more device; what about your transmitters, follow focuses, and monitor(s)? doesn't seem as good as tool as I though initially
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! At 7:15 you have a right angle downward adapter on your GH5s. Have you had any issues with it overtime or has it been pretty solid?
It's an interesting looking product, but for the money they are charging I think it looks a little on the cheap side in terms of materials. It's going to set you back roughly 33% the cost of a GH5. It should look better, especially the quality of included shoulder pad.
I do live events, 95% of the time my cameras are on sticks, I think this would be a nice cutaway camera and not make my client nervous by seeing a tiny GH5 shooting there event...I'm a little worried about reliability though...any problem with overheating?
I think its neat... but if your doing a lot of that type of work, should you not invest in a better camera system like the EVA1? I think the GH5 is meant and best used as a small camera that you cant use the bigger cameras for.
I agree that's true, but I feel the GH5 is better suited for gimbal work then shoulder work. As nice as the GH5 is, its still a glorified Jpeg shooting camera, which does not give you the same latitude of editing prowess that the big boy cameras have that would be used for shoulder mounted operations. I have a GH5, and I love the power per dollar I put into it, but I wont pretend its something its not and rig it out into something that I can't really do too well. Its like those modified Civics, no amount of work can be put into it to make it into a real sports car, its still just a eco car on drugs!. But with that said, if someone loves their shoulder rig like you have, and you enjoy and get a lot of use out of, then go for it. Happy shooting! :)
for $580 seems like a good deal, is it a replacement for the XLR1 in a way since it has XLR port? I was about to get it but I seen people who have some broken ones.
I wouldn't say its a replacement for the XLR1. That is a more specialized piece of audio equipment with many more features. If you only need a single phantom-power XLR port, plus all the other features this rig gives you, then this is a great piece of kit to own.
Hello Adam, I'm a little confused. How do you change the GH5 settings if you cannot access the buttons? This is a nice product, and I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. If you could answer my question, that would be great. Thanks. - Paul
Not for me....I can shoot on the shoulder for MUCH less than 600 bucks. It does look cool but not really practical for my kind of shooting. But again, if you want to look cool...get this.
@@AdamMurtland yes, for operating in handheld mode. You could still use an external monitor for setting up, metering and focus purposes. You'd have to use the built in monitor if your subject is moving to any significant degree.
Don't get hung up on specs and figures. In actual practice, the lag is negligible. I've (and thousands of others) monitor with HDMI devices all the time.
@@AdamMurtland specs don't come into it. From first hand experience the delay is enough to make a person's operating more reactionary, which makes for a worse operator.
I'm not seeing the appeal of this thing. It seems to solve all the same problems other products have solved for compact cameras for years (external power solutions, audio recorders, etc) and just put it in a box hoping people will want it. I also don't want gear mounted behind my camera where it might limit access to the various buttons on the camera. Definitely not for me, hopefully someone finds it useful
To each their own. Some people may appreciate having all of those gear solutions (power, audio etc.) in one compact box. Others may prefer to piece their rig together from separate components. This rig gives that first group an option. Also, you have access to all the physical controls of the camera when using this rig. The only things that are blocked are the EVF and battery door.
To have the weight of a large capacity Sony L battery comes in handy as a counterbalance. Especially if one has a matte box at the opposite end of the rig.
Yeah, I get that, too. But my battery solution is also mounted behind my shoulder pad. I guess if people don't want to futz around with the different pieces this could be a good solution for people, but I enjoy building things out and being able to upgrade components as needed, not to mention everything being modular.
I think it looks very interesting as really changes how you can use the camera. For many of us who were used to shoulder mounted video cameras this would enable us to transform the GH5 into something similar. I think the biggest problem is only having 1 XLR input.
For me it looks weird to build from small cameras big ones, i like gh5 as it is, battery life is not issue at all with gh5, sdi output have same lag as hdmi, looks like it gives only bulk to camera...
I think this is a great accessory for small scale client facing production companies or television productions who want to install confidence that they have professional gear. I worked on a broadcast production which had a crazy-stretched budget and used three GH5s, Something like this would have not only made gear less 'fiddly', but also assured the people we were filming that we weren't like, hobbyists or something. We used massive tripods, with little mirrorless cameras on top. It looked silly.
Tom Bradshaw I think that depends on how you want to use the camera. If you want the camera on your shoulder, you’ll need to rig it up somehow. And, you can always take the camera out of the rig.
Oh yuck ! *I don't want that screen so close to my eyes.* It would be better to have a Zacutto eyepiece on there than a 4 inch screen in front of the eye that close, when in shoulder mode*
I would have to pass on this for sure! In all seriousness, it looks hella cheap! Also, for a similar price you can just get Vmount batteries which "look pro" but also last about 12 hours longer than those pesky little SOny batteires. It literally does not enhance the GH5 in any way! Just looks "cool" but also looks like something might fall off mid important shooT!
@@AdamMurtland Nah to poor lighting? Really? It's not even subjective. Ha! Ok, fair enough. Good luck if you can't take simple critique. You've exposed so badly but you're fine with it. Madness.

Thanks - great review. I did not know about this product and was surprised to see how inexpensive it is!
Glad I stumbled on this. Would you be able to share links to the extra components you custom picked liike the shoulder pad and top handle?
Can we get a list or link to some of the added parts like shoulder pad and follow focus.

Is it the same as the Came-TV Terrapin? Are they just the same thing rebranded?
Where did you get the shoulder pad? Cool!
Great rig . Client's will also appreciate the aesthetics of this build if they are on set with you during a Gh5 shoot. Thanks
That's one of the biggest reasons to get this rig lol
Hello, where can i get the "arm mount" for monitor like you have? and thanks for review !!
Maybe if it were an external recorder for higher quality recording but looks like a lot of bulk with unneeded features
It's not the rig for everyone, but I wouldn't say it has unneeded features. It all depends on how you use your camera.
Adam Murtland well I guess it is cool but depends on the price, I couldn't find the price anywhere and don't remover hearing it in the video u less you did mention it I'm sorry

Thanks for your review. sdi port is 4k 2160P30(6G)?
No, it is 3G 1080p60
Is it possible to add the XLR module from Panasonic with the camera mounted to this rig?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! At 7:15 you have a right angle downward adapter on your GH5s. Have you had any issues with it overtime or has it been pretty solid?
really amazing rig...with this converted output from hdmi to sdi, can you record RAW with an atomos monitor??
Desociablegik No. Wishful thinking though!

Hey Adam!
Would be nice to know which hdmi slim cable are you using? thanks!
Dude, your overlay is good but your main shot is like 2 stops under exposed

It's the Rokinon 85mm t1.5 DS

No problems at all with overheating.
Does the monitor come with the ket? If not, is it designed to mount an Atomos Ninja Inferno with HDMI cable?
Franc Contreras the monitor doesn’t come with the kit, but yes you can add something like the Inferno.
I think its neat... but if your doing a lot of that type of work, should you not invest in a better camera system like the EVA1?
I think the GH5 is meant and best used as a small camera that you cant use the bigger cameras for.
Cost is one prohibitive factor. You can also take the GH5/s out of this rig in under a minute to take advantage of its small size.

What sort of work do you do?
Can you mod this for a V-Mount battery?
Thanks for this thorough video. It looks great except for the XLR audio. Only one, huh?
Can you connect the SDI out to a LiveU and use it to transmit live?

You can access all the controls. Thanks for watching.
Hello Adam,
Ok I understand. Thank you for the quick reply!

can you record prores raw with the sdi out in the Shogun Inferno?
No, because the signal is still originating from the GH5/s HDMI port.
Ariel Pereira Quintela besides the GH5 doesnt output raw so prores raw would not work either way
Gh4 gets new life
What should pad are you using?
Can this rig work with the Panasoni G7???
Well damn it, someone did a similar idea to mine! :/ At least it is fairly different in certain ways...
What lens is on the gh5?
It's the Rokinon 85mm t/1.5 DS
Do you get two mic inputs when doing this? I'm thinking no but wanted to ask to make sure.
No, you'll only have either the camera's 3.5mm input or the XLR.
Adam Murtland so just to be clear, it’s not possible to record in the 3.5mm and xlr at the same time? That would be a big bummer.
Correct, that is impossible.
Good question.
Would it be possible to use the xlr1 thing with the lanparte cable connected To the original hotshoe?

Its not al about looking cool you know, i prefer this over basic handheld shooting with a batery grip + this is easier for steadicam work aswell
It's a nice concept but the GH5 HDMI delay problems make that configuration unusable.
By that logic, any use of an HDMI monitor is unusable...
