    I did this in my car, while the steering wheel was in the car! Great way to update the wheel.

      I'm two minds as to whether it would have been easier in the car or not.

      I messed up mine, 🤦‍♂️ took it to a steering wheel retrim specialist to get it done. Great update either way. I need to replace the side indicators with LED ones and the, rear lights as well. Should be getting the Billet custom paddles Monday from Nelson racing wheels 😎

    got one of these on Amazon in the US from MEWANT, could not be happier. Got alcantara with no stripe and 3 color stitching, what a fun project

    I did this on my E39 540i M-Sport in suede, and it turned out pretty great. There were a couple of spots that weren't 100%, but it was vastly superior to the worn factory leather and added some thickness to the wheel. On my E60 though, I'm just going to order a wheel from Coby Wheel.

    I did this on mine as well, same brand about 9 months ago and it has held up really well. But the best part is the way the steering wheel feels in your hands now, definitely worth it.

      It’s made the Msport wheel feel more firm. And the leather is soft like the new f series wheels

    Good to see you haven’t given up, getting the little jobs done, really enjoying the e9* stuff, as I have a e91 wishing one day I could do mods like this

    Not bad!
    I did my E83 wheel last year and also removed it to do the work from my couch instead of in the vehicle. I used the tri-colour thread and I have to say it is less forgiving because it stands out! I had exactly the same issues you did, plus I found it was even more wrinkled when I finished because I got more confident with how tight I could pull the thread (as you mentioned).
    That said, I have used leather conditioner on it several times, and also the heated steering wheel function, and after a year, it has completely tightened up!
    I might not have noticed, or just thought I got used to it but my daughter got in the X3 the other day and asked if I had "got rid of my home sewn steering wheel and bought a new one" LOL.
    WAY cheaper (several orders of magnitude) than the professionally refinished wheel I bought for the M3, and looks 90% as good LOL

    I think when pros do this they use steam to make the leather a light more pliable also knock the stitching down with a small hammer as makes it flat! Good job though I’d of ruined that if I’d of done it!

    For a little bit of safety when pulling the wheel off, it’s sometimes worth using the bolt in or nut on if the wheel is stiff so when you try pull it off you don’t cop a wheel to the face 😂

  • @shoepacr1
    @shoepacr1 3 роки тому

    CAUTION! THERE ARE 2 MORE SPECIAL TOOL SETS YOU NEED! When it comes time to re-install the cam ledges, it's imperative that u use a "cam ledge alignment set" also during this process, you will need a tool that holds 2 of the valve springs compressed as to not put any load on the cam and cam ledges during install and torque process. I found that the valve timing set was easily procurable, while these other 2 sets were MUCH more expensive, and harder to find. Some may say you don't need them, but I have seen 1st hand the damage done to cam ledges and cam shafts when they weren't used.

    Looks like it turned out good. Did it bulk up the wheel much? I like the thickness of the e90 wheel. I may get this for my e39. The e39 wheel feels a bit thinner

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 роки тому +1

      To be honest not noticeably. The wheel is very thick on an e90 and this stretches quite a lot. You can just see In the video the new leather is thin enough for it show the original seams underbites it.

      @@ZeroTo60Tubeheads-up the Alcantara is no good. They call it black suede or something . I'd cancel that order 😅 it goes bad very very fast and develops fuzzy clumps that are insufferable. At least that's been my experience

    the bottom where the 2 pieces of leather meet should cut the edges as close to the seams as possible, so it is now too thick at the joints.

    In Germany, it is about 100€ to get completely new leather on your wheel - makes no sense for me to do it yourself if even the leather is 45€. 55€ to get it perfect and don't do anything besides installing...
