Are you looking forward to Volume 4 of the Columbia Classics 4K line?
More PTA on 4K is always a good thing.
And I quite like the rest of the line up as well tbh.
I can’t imagine buying one of these. Mostly I don’t want to buy movies I don’t like, which is guaranteed with a set like this because it’s such a random mix of films. Also I don’t want to reward the consumer-unfriendly business practices.
I think things like this is what's killing physical media. For the last 5 years, if I've wanted to watch films like Jurassic Park, Taxi Driver, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, any of Hitchcock's films, in 4K, I would have to fork up hundreds of pounds for these box sets that might be full of films that I don't like/want. If I want a 4K of something and it's stuck in a box set like this, I'm not going to waste my money on the blu ray as I hope it'll get a standalone release one day, no, I'm going to watch it on streaming. Now tell me how that road to watching the film benefits physical media??
I'd love for them to make custom box sets available - 6 4k titles from the Columbia Classics library that you can mix and match to your liking.

I’m pretty psyched, I preordered the first day it was available. I love all three previous sets and haven’t been disappointed.
I have the first 3. Very glad I have them all as they really are premium packages. All the 4K transfers and audio transfers are TOP notch, there are some truly great films in there (even if some are better than others), the special features are outstanding, and I think the packaging is gorgeous. That being said, I do think it’s wrong that some of these titles are held hostage in these sets and not released for very long periods of time afterwards, as I can totally see why someone may not want the whole thing. I think the best collection of titles by far was volume 1, and while 2 and 3 were also good, they haven’t been as consistent.
I’m not sure yet if I’m gonna be getting volume 4 or not. While it has some titles that I would like, it’s the least exciting to me out of all the volumes. That plus the price seems to be the highest it’s ever been for some reason, so it would have to go on sale before I would do it.

None of the collections have "must have" movies for me, and they're beyond my current financial capabilities.

The theme for the new Columbia Classics Volume 4 set is Valentine’s Day/romance since the release date in the United States is February 13th.
I’ve enjoyed all 3 of the sets. Not just the films but the books that come with them AND the bonus discs. And the bonus disc for Set 4 I am eager to see again - the entire Starman TV series. I have vague memories of it from when I was a kid so this will be a fun trip back. And so now I’m excited to see what they’ll do for Set 5!
I feel this is a great set. Linked by love and romance. Fantastic packaging, the book and extra content worth the money. Some of these will never see a 4k release other than this boxset. An easy buy for me and will look great displayed in my collection.
I want these boxsets, they are beautifull, they come with a nice book, and some of the sets have cool extras. I Think vol 4. Box set is all about love. Having to deal with love, in different ways. Sony nearly always have great v/a quality. 🎉
I'd like to see Disney put out Twentieth Century Fox 4K boxsets to rival Columbia's. The first Columbia Classics volume took up most the air from the succeeding volumes. When I think classics, I mean 1969 and older. Throw us a sci-fi bone in the collection.
I like these box sets and the titles introduced me to new things. It also fills out my collection. These are classics.
Elliot, I feel your pain. I too passed on Volume 1. Sony sent out a questionnaire asking what films people would like to see in their release of Vol 1. I was excited to see Born Yesterday on their list and made it my top choice. It pissed me off that it wasn’t selected. Angry, I thought I’d show them, and refused to buy it. What a fool I was! I have a bad case of FOMO about Volume 4. I want it but if it is drastically marked down in 6 months (as was the case with Volumes 1, 2, and 3) I’ll be so mad. I’ve heard rumors that they were disappointed that Volume 3 did not sell as well as expected, so they didn’t produce a large amount of #4. Should I pre-order or wait for a sale? I’m afraid if I wait it will sell out, and I don’t think I could handle that. I owned 4 out of the 6 films on Blu-ray but sold them in anticipation. I guess I have no option…

I literally only bought Volume 2 for "Taxi Driver" as there doesn't seem to be any plan (as far as I know) for it to be given an individual release. A bit extravagant but it is my favourite film!

Personally, I hate these compilations. Just sell me the films individually. Space is a luxury, and I don't have room for this much empty cardboard. I typically pull them out, put them in protector cases, and recycle the packaging. Yeah. I'm that guy. 😄

It's a little strange to have Sleepless In Seattle in the set as it's a TriStar film, not Columbia. Still under Sony, but the set is not called Sony Classics...

Most of the people working at these studios don't know or care about the history of their companies let alone much about films period. These hodge podge box sets are just a symptom of the problem

Got the other 3 sets, Sony do annoy me though as they didnt do the slip covers on the Uk Vol 3 set but good titles on the 4th set. Also we get the Starman tv episodes as well, Also heard that unlike 2 and 3 Sony plan to do a similar run to that on the first set so they may sell out fast.
These sets in particular I think are too bulky. They don’t fit on a normal shelf for blu-ray cases and I don’t have a lot of space to put boxes like this. Also I like my boxes to have some theme, like all from one director or all from one series or with the same main actor or even all from one decade, but this kid of random selection doesn’t speak to me. Also I still haven’t afforded to upgrade my home theatre to 4K, but I know I will when my current equipment needs replacing and I have the money, so I’m future proofing some movies already, but spending this much on 6 discs I can’t even watch, that might have gotten individual releases by the time I can, doesn’t make much sense for me, but that’s a personal thing. And I don’t necessarily feel like I need to upgrade all of them. I’m probably never watching Sleepless in Seattle again, and if I do the Blu-Ray will be fine, and even if I like Kramer vs Kramer it’s not necessarily a movie I’m looking to experience in any higher quality than what the Blu-Ray offers.

I think the theme for this set is love/romance. It is being released near Valentines Day right? So that's pretty cool. I enoy the sets even if I'm not familiar with all of the titles. There's usually 3 that I'm really excited for. 2 that I'm interested in. 1 that I'm just not sure about. No regrets so far just appreciation for Sony and their excellent work on the format!
Columbia was clever. They figured out they'd profit more by putting these in boxed sets rather than selling these titles individually. I want a few of these titles but I'm kind of offended that they expect I want these giant boxes on my shelf. I stupidly thought, "Oh well they'll package them individually soon." Well, I'm still waiting. Not many of these are available individually.
I actually only wanted STRIPES, but was happy to have TAXI DRIVER as well.
I'm all for waiting most of the time, (The Hitchcock classics are a personal exception, because even "bad" Hitchcock is better than most filmmakers "good".) I like to run a tight collection both because of cost and space. I never keep a movie I know I won't watch more than once.
Agree re: Hitchcock. I just got the 3rd box of 4Ks. Any day now they’ll announce a big box set with all of the Universal Hitchcock films! Sounds like you have a good system for your collection. Cheers!
Also to note, in the US, all the Hitchcock 4K titles are all actually sold separately so you can just import them if you only want 1 and they have individual slipcovers
I would argue that depending on your shelf and the placment, they take up LESS space that 6 films in separate cases. I think in sales, the cost isn't so bad I also am quite happy to break the sets up and sell the one I don't want which reduces the overall cost even more.
i ended up spending an arm and a leg just for taxi driver, definitely my crown jewel in my 4k collection. I'm not in the business of buying big boxsets as space is very tight, i like standalone releases but like you said in the video its a sale tactic and its pretty lame plus I don't know a whole lot about some of the other movies in the boxsets and some i do but not worth having imo, but to others it maybe worth it, but each to there own, its all part of being a collector i guess.
I did the same for Taxi Driver. I felt an idiot some time later. 😮

I currently own the Columbia Classics Vol. 1 boxset and I honestly don't know if I'll ever get rid of it. I still need to get Volume 3 and then 4, but the idea of saving space really makes me think about whether or not it's worth keeping. 🤔
I missed out on the first one, too. It has 4Ks of A League of Their Own and Jerry Maguire, and it drives me crazy that I didn't pick it up.
I never picked up the first volume either, and now it goes for crazy prices. Thankfully though I’ve got a couple of separate releases individually that I wanted. I did however get volumes 2 and 3, containing a few dvd upgrades for me. I do enjoy sets and am glad there’s 4ks, but I feel like the collected titles aren’t curated and it makes the steep price a harder impulse buy.
I kind of hate these box sets with random titles and I mostly avoid them like the plague. I want to buy the movies that _I_ want, not the movies that _they_ happen to put in one box.
The only box set of this kind that I have is the one from Sony. Expensive to import yes, but at least it contains _a lot_ of films on 4K that I like. Plus, I owned only a few of these on bluray already. Nonetheless rather mixed feelings that most of these titles have not been released yet on 4K separately. I do not want to sponsor this strategy.
In Amazon in the US it is up for preorder at $215.99 which is a ridiculous price which I don't expect to last to release date. I believe only volume 1 sold out but volume 3 dropped as low as $70, so better to wait for a sale.
May I recommend second hand stores ? My blu ray bargains include Star Wars prequels (£3), The Lord of the Rings trilogy (33p), Back to the Future trilogy (£3), Rock Hudson Doris Day trilogy (£10), and All About Eve (50p).

You are correct that Taxi Driver has never had a standalone 4K. However, I just saw a video from another channel that states Sony is planning that for July. But I couldn’t verify that anywhere.
I'm not a fan of box sets of unrelated films.
The same series yes, same director or actor? I guess at a stretch.
Completely unrelated films only linked by the studio though? Messes with my ocd for organisation.
I do think they're overpriced too. Should be a little discount for buying six films at once. I'm sure they'll get seperate releases eventually.
Edit: I do have the Arrow Shaw Brothers box sets, but Shaw Brothers is pretty much a genre of its own.
I haven't bought any of these. But I've come close. I don't think you've read the marketing right. All the movies in the sets are high sellers. They may appeal to different demographics. But they've all be strong performers in the home video market for Sony. Rather than the odd marketing ploy you suggest, they have chosen the titles for each release to create a nice mix of genres and eras from the Columbia library for each boxset.
They just announced (or maybe rumoured not sure) a 4K Steelbook of Taxi Driver.
I want the 4K of Synecdoche, New York but as far I can tell, it’s only been in Sony’s similar box set.

I was lucky to buy them on sale. They were actually very good deals in my case. I don’t own vol. 1. I wouldn’t pay full price.
I have got first three sets and have fourth one on order - interesting that US version is significantly more expensive. My main concern with next box set Is whether UK set include tv episodes of Starman. Any ideas?
Stand alone 4ks ot the those movies would be great.

I had no interest in this series until Vol. 4 was announced.Starman is, of course, the best of the lineup and the main reason this will easily sell out quickly so I put in a Preorder at two different online retailers just in case. I've never seen Kramer vs. Kramer and it was never really on my radar to seek out but now that I'm going to own a copy I'm eager to check it out. Funny how these things work. SONY is a bit of an odd duck when it comes to physical media. They are in the game fullstop because their restorations are superb for the most part, yet they make decisions like these collections here (only releasing certain popular titles in these expensive sets). Can't wrap my mind around that.
I just want Starman 😭 one of Carpenters best films and ridiculously under seen/under rated. I mean Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen? Is a thing of beauty.
This doesn’t go for everyone but I always feel these complication boxsets like this are for people that don’t really have a movie collection and don’t necessarily have taste to choose for themselves so they like getting a random assortment of ‘classics’. I’m thinking more older people that are 50, 60+. Although I don’t know how many people in this demographic have made it beyond dvd.
Sets like these are hard sells for me. Especially if you’re only interested in a few of the movies. They tend to go on sale so if this one does maybe I’ll get it
On a side note. I think this one also includes the Starman TV show in 4K as well so that’s cool

An interesting topic Elliot thanks! Personally I pretty much dislike this tactic of ONLY making the films available in these pricey and limited sets. By all means have them but also release them individually for goodness sake. Even though I love Lawrence of Arabia there wad no way I was going to pay the collection price plus have to buy several movies I have no interest in. I can't see how it makes any commercial sense either just seems plain dumb and perverse.
I personally am frustrated that I just cannot buy certain movies I want like Jerry Maguire and The Social Network without breaking the bank on a boxset with other movies I don't want.
The bundling is like cable TV or when theaters showed double features and the B movie was considered lower quality but you paid for it anyway. Fortunately, I like all the selections from Columbia, like Taxi Driver and Sense and Sensibility. But I missed box 2.
Have all 3, and I'll grab the 4th when it's on sale, like 2 and 3 were. Actually got the 3rd for $68 in November.

I still don't get why Sony spent a fortune on a Lawrence Of Arabia 4K release and then locks it in a box set that has been unavailable for years or occasionally releases limited editions that immediately sell out. Same for some other movies in these sets.
"But you can sell the ones you don't want." Yeah, but I don't want to deal with eBay sales and all the hassle that goes with that. I just want to buy Taxi Driver and The Social Network in 4K.
I'm worse off than you. I don't own 1 or 2 and used sales are very expensive. I own 3, which is great, and ordered 4 a while ago.

There have been 1-2 token social issues movies that don't hold up in every one of these box sets. Everybody knows it. I'll only buy them at the lowest price point if there's a killer film in the set I don't want to risk missing, such as Lawrence of Arabia or Taxi Driver.
I usually sell half the movies and end up making all my money back, plus I keep 3 movies
I really like these personally but it’s really annoying how the US versions come with slipcovers and the UK ones don’t? It makes no damn sense
i picked up the first two sets but passed on the third i just had no interest instead i got sony pictures classics 11 film set that looked more interesting to me even though i already had crouching tiger hidden dragon in 4k some of the other titles were first time on 4k SLC PUNK i think was only available on dvd it might be a good alternative if you cant get volume one of the culumbia set
Not for me. The box is too big to store and the titles don't all interest me. I also think the price point is too high when you consider the cost of individual releases. I'll wait for standalone versions, even if they take a few years to arrive.
Far too expensive for 6 films on 4k. The Hitchcock sets with 4-5 films are £60 or less, which is much more like it. Gandhi is available on 4k and Taxi Driver coming soon, along with a UK reissue of the Lawrence of Arabia steelbook.

Half of the films in these are absolute Classics and should be available individually. It’s astonishing that these films are only available in these box sets. And then they sell out and you can never buy them.
And the other half is pure garbage!

These Columbia boxsets are over over overpriced, giant, clumsy and a mixed bag. Some great classics go along with crap films. It's hard to digest. I have volume 1. The strongest one, but such a waste of good titles with trash like Jerry Maguire and A League on Their Own. I bought the second one for Taxi Driver and regretted. I felt stupid and silly. Never, never more. A hard pass.
It's a method for Columbia to justify upgrading the lesser desired titles and getting them out there in the best format they can. The consumer absolutely is the loser here, I personally haven't bought any of them and don't plan to. But on one hand, it's good that less popular titles are getting superior transfers out there that some of the crowd would never have dreamt of would be upgraded to 4K.?
@@Kev_Cossure! Everything can be released in 4k, but this box is completely random and we buy things we have zero interest for 1, 2 films. Not for me.
No interest in buying sets that have multiple films I either dont want or dont need to upgrade. I think these are made for box collectors more than film collectors.
I hate these collector editions. Just give me the disc and I will buy them.
I hate them and find them to be the ultimate corporate money grabs. In each of these overpriced cardboard lumps there's one or two films I want; the rest I can do without; and that angers me. I refuse to buy the whole caboodle; I neither have the budget nor the inclination to do so. And packaging and artwork on the boxes; I couldn't care less: I want my hard-earned cash to go to things I want, like the best transfers of the films I like.
Never will purchase these compilation boxsets. One or at most two anticipated titles and the rest IMO are filler. Out of the titles that were released, I only want Taxi Driver and Lawrence of Arabia… had to make do with purchasing the license on Apple TV
