When I listen to the song I envision myself flying on the back of a dragon into some epic, mythical battle of old 🐉 This song inspired a lot of the galloping heavy metal, like Iron Maident, etc. Check out the live at Knebworth version from 79 too to see all this glory.
The thing that separates Page from the rest of the guitarists of his time was that his time as a session guitarist in the mid sixties trained him to listen to parts in a song, to learn how to piece together and orchestrate melodies and counter-melodies into a tapestry of epic music like “Achilles”. Not every guitarist has the ear or the training for studio production and orchestration-he was the whole package. His playing may not be as polished as Eddie Van Halen or Yngwie Malmsteen, but he doesn’t have to be. He’s a composer who happens to be one of the best guitarists of his time. And with his quartet of Plant, Jones, and Bonham-who all had great listening and improvisational skills (like classical Indian musicians do), he was in his element to show the world his style of rock music. He changed the genre. Half of the time on stage, Zep was improvising and exploring within the framework-more so than the hippy rock like Jefferson Airplane or Grateful Dead. It was tighter. It was less about meandering and more about call and response, unison, and other classical Indian tricks. Bonham kept it tight and grooving. Jones authoritatively held the groove down too with his incredibly melodic bass lines. And Plant had the ballsy pipes to match Page’s guitar lines and steer the band into uncharted waters from time to time (plus he was an excellent lyricist and a walking library of rockabilly and blues lyrics). They knew from the first time they got into a room and jammed that they had chemistry. They pushed each other. They listened and replied back. They knew when to take the reins and when to give the the reins to someone else. No other band had that kind of ability. And the songs they crafted were carefully made to allow for that format. There may be bands that sound like them (Kingdom Come, Greta Van Fleet) but they miss the underlying intricacies of chemistry to really pull off what Zep was all about. Page spent years honing his abilities on guitar and in the studio before Zep ever formed. Same with Jones. This is why they sounded polished from the very first album. They all had years of experience and woodshedding before even joining up.

"You can't say he's the best. They're all better in their own regards". That is an incredibly wise statement.
The cover and inside sleeve, created by Hipgnosis with George Hardie, features images of people interacting with a black obelisk-shaped object. Inside the sleeve, the item is referred to simply as "The Object". It was intended to represent Zeppelin's "force and presence". Hipgnosis co-founder Storm Thorgerson wrote that the obelisk represented the power of Led Zeppelin, saying they were "so powerful, they didn't need to be there". Both Page and Plant have said that the presence of the object in the photographs made people stop and think about what is real, which reflected the music. The background in the cover photograph is an artificial marina, installed in London's Earl's Court arena for the annual Boat Show, in the winter of 1974-75. The band played a series of concerts at this venue in May 1975, a few months after the boat show. The inner sleeve photographs came from various archive stock pictures, and was designed to resemble a feature in National Geographic. The girl on the back cover photo also appeared on Houses of the Holy. Hipgnosis and Hardie were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Album Package in 1977.

I really like Presence. It's got a kind of unity to it, similar mood and sound through it, probably because it was written & recorded so fast. I don't know if you're planning on doing the whole thing, I would recommend it. If not, at least do Tea for One and Nobody's Fault But Mine. Royal Orleans is great deeper cut, a personal favorite. Edit: Great, I see you're doing them all. Good you noticed the drums, this is one of Bonham's tour de force songs, though I suppose there's a bunch.
Good reaction from you both. Before recording the album, Robert Plant was in a serious car accident with his family. He sang the album sitting in a wheelchair.
As was I, August 11th, 1979. Still have vivid .emories of the whole day. It was a bizarre line up, and a surreal experience waking up to Chaz And Dave! Zeppelin were, well, Zeppelin, tight but loose, Achillies Last Stand, Kashmir and the reworked Whole Lotta Love were outstanding.
In the summer of 1976, I purchased this Album. One of my favorite Zepplin. Jimmy Page lead guitarist, John Paul Jones Bass, John Bonham, DRUMMER EXTRODENARE Robert Plant VOCALS. Bohnam and Jones joined the band as a package deal.
This album is unique in their discography. Most of the other albums each have a wide palette of different moods and feels and styles. This one is very much of one piece, perhaps owing to the particular circumstances under which it was recorded. It has one feel: urgent...
The thing that the family is staring at is called the obelisk or simply the object as its also called sometimes, it makes another appearance at the reunion concert in 2007 during Kashmir as well.
For Your Life is another great track off that album. Totally underrated Zep album. And Jimmy Page uses a whammy bar on it with his Strat. No one ever played guitar like Jimmy Page back then or to this day. He was his own genre.
There's no such thing as a simple drum beat especially in this song Achilles last stand! John Bonham was a beast in this drumming is not easy any of it! This song is what started the gallop rhythm which iron maiden made it their signature sound thanks to Led Zeppelin! And this is proto power metal!
A great song on a a damn fine album, his guitar just shines on this LP. Tea for One is the other epic on it, a slower, bluesy pace and another remarkable tune. Nice to see Alivia again! Enjoy🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Dang, Silas, how many Zeppelin songs have you reacted to and you're still not sure who's who in the band? Top left: Jimmy Page Top right: John Paul Jones Bottom left: John Bonham Bottom right: Robert Plant If you thought this was great, I recommend that you react to their 1979 Knebworth concert live performance of "Achilles Last Stand". Fabulous, to say the least, and maybe watching them live again will help you to attach a face to a name. ;) Good to see that you're back to reacting to the best rock band in history. :) Edit: The black obelisk is referred to inside the album cover as "The Object". A co-founder of the art company, Hipgnosis, that designed the cover said it was intended to represent Zeppelin's "force and presence", saying they were "so powerful, they didn't need to be there".
The "object" on the cover is actually in a series of photos on the gatefold album cover. It was developed by Hipnosis (Storm Thorgeson) the same team that is responsible for Most of Pink Floyd's album covers.
This is a real tour de force...Maybe my favorite Zeppelin track overall, if I had to pick one. What really gets me is that my favorite part is that sort of arpeggiated guitar, and it's only played at the beginning and at the end. Astounding piece of work...
The one from this album that always gets me is "Nobody's Fault But Mine." During that transition period from vinyl / 8-track / cassette (including DAT) / to CD. Quadraphonic was interspersed in there as well - We all spent a lot on the various media and their players. Of course, just before Zep came out, I was jamming to reel-to-reel...
I was 15 when this Album came out in 76. I bought this album right when it came out (Thanks Mom). Going on 63 next month, still love this song, but Nobody's Fault but Mine is still my favorite. 😎👊🏽✌🏽
the live version from knebworth 1979 is very good. As is kashmir from that same concert. in my time of dying live 1975 from mothership dvd is good too.

You should do more videos together , its hilarious watching you get roasted, I like the way she draws out your comments, it would be nice to hear your thoughts more. This is a good piece of music to imagine Achilles final battle during the trojan War and his death by an arrow to the heel his only weak spot (shot by Paris). This sort of thing i always find reminiscent of Hawkwinds "Chronicle of the Black Sword".
The thing in the middle of the table is "The Thing"! It was a gag from the band, it was made in 1000 ex and given to different dignitaries and special friends of the band. It is almost impossible to find one for sale, but last year one was sold for 10.000$...
I can really recommend the live performance of this song at Knebworth in 1979. They did two dates that year on 4 and 11 August. I went to the first one where the live track was filmed and its still the most incredible concert I have attended. Bonham, the drummer, is an absolute monster on this track. Kashmir from the same concert is incredible as well.
It’s the layered guitar parts that really sets Zeppelin apart from other bands of that era. No one composes guitar parts with the intentionality of completing a soundscape that only works with all these interlocking guitars quite like Page, even to this day. Bonham just kills it…all four of them. It just exemplifies musical excellence.

If you want to hear Bonham at his best and I mean at his VERY best listen to 'In my time of Dying' from Physical Grafiti the studio version BEST drumimg I have ever heard. You may have to listen to it a few times to ....get it...... but I think its their best track ever.
The thing they're looking at is the "presence" 😂 are there a bunch of other pictures like in the sleeve? Seems like I remember when I had the vinyl record had a bunch of pictures and little monolith thing was in all of them...?
Amazing drumming and fantastic guitar work from Page. It's interesting to listen to Robert Plants singing on this though. Its a significant piece if you track his evolving style. Despite the heavy nature of the track his singing is more restrained, more controlled.More musical . And in his solo career we see that development continue. I can still remember the excitement of seeing this in the shop the week it was released. I was 16 and sold eggs door to door 2 nights a week after school to earn the money to buy albums like this one. Worth all the cold wet nights!
This sounds like jazz-fusion to me, that’s the first time I’ve ever thought of this song this way. Anybody else ever get that? He’s definitely one of my all time favorite guitarist along with Lifeson.

I was 15 when this Album came out in 76. I bought this album right when it came out
(Thanks Mom). Going on 63 next month, still love this song, but Nobody's Fault but Mine is still my favorite. 😎👊🏽✌🏽
Watch this live at Knebworth guys. Jimmy trying to do the 8 guitar parts out of one guitar. The Wizard!!
the live version from knebworth 1979 is very good. As is kashmir from that same concert. in my time of dying live 1975 from mothership dvd is good too.
The cover and inside sleeve, created by Hipgnosis with George Hardie, features images of people interacting with a black obelisk-shaped object. Inside the sleeve, the item is referred to simply as "The Object". It was intended to represent Zeppelin's "force and presence".
This song is a bomb.
Led Zep on headphones sounds really good high…which, not to tell tales out of school, y’all might have some experience with.
OK we got the super couple back on the LedZep Track
You two need to listen to this song LOUDLY while driving fast on a highway when there’s little traffic.
My favourite Zeppelin song
My absolute fave LedZep track, from their most underrated album (though to be honest otherwise not one of my favourites)🎩💜
The thing in the middle of the table is "The Thing"!
It was a gag from the band, it was made in 1000 ex and given to different dignitaries and special friends of the band.
It is almost impossible to find one for sale, but last year one was sold for 10.000$...
This is Zeppelin at its finest .. The live video from Knebworth 79 will leave you both stunned and amazed .. Check it out .. Peace

The cover and inside sleeve, created by Hipgnosis with George Hardie, features images of people interacting with a black obelisk-shaped object. Inside the sleeve, the item is referred to simply as "The Object". It was intended to represent Zeppelin's "force and presence".[5][22] Hipgnosis co-founder Storm Thorgerson wrote that the obelisk represented the power of Led Zeppelin, saying they were "so powerful, they didn't need to be there".[23][24] Both Page and Plant have said that the presence of the object in the photographs made people stop and think about what is real, which reflected the music.[24]
The background in the cover photograph is an artificial marina, installed in London's Earl's Court arena for the annual Boat Show, in the winter of 1974-75. The band played a series of concerts at this venue in May 1975, a few months after the boat show. The inner sleeve photographs came from various archive stock pictures, and was designed to resemble a feature in National Geographic.[25] The girl on the back cover photo also appeared on Houses of the Holy.[22] Hipgnosis and Hardie were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Album Package in 1977.[26]
I was 16 when I first heard this in 1976 - it was a life changing experience.!!
your are correct Jimmy top left, John Paul top right, John Bonham lower left, and Plant
They are looking at 'the object'.
I knew that would blow your socks off it's fantastic, their best song I think.
Try this one for a treat, UA-cam, ''''Irainian band PART covered Led Zeppelin's song Achilles Last Stand live in the studio'''', this is a brilliant cover mate, their all brilliant, see what you think. three cheers to you two thanks
Dont be afraid to search things druing the recording. It adds color to the video.
It is a twisted obelisk ...... dubbed "the object"
If you want to hear Bonham at his best and I mean at his VERY best listen to 'In my time of Dying' from Physical Grafiti the studio version BEST drumimg I have ever heard. You may have to listen to it a few times to ....get it...... but I think its their best track ever.
This young guy should listen to all brit rock bands from the 60s he wont be disappointed nice to see American youth listening to this genre of music.
they were at the peak Ia under appreciated album.
Almost impossible to pick a favorite Zep song but this one is right up there. ☘️✌️
