My Dad was a 20 yr. Navy & Vietnam vet. He was a Marine tormenting Navy dentist (jk, they were his favs). From the time I was 11 til I was 14 I was a really sick kid. All I ever wanted to be was a Marine, but I had several surgeries that disqualified me. My Dad went as far to write admiral buddies of his (he was a retired O-6 by this time) to get me in, but to no end. I'm 30 now & there's not a day that goes by that I don't wish it could've turned out differntly. You all have my utmost respect.
AFTER you're in a Recon BN, sections or individual Marines are temporarily assigned to other component units such as a MEU-SOC (Marine Expeditionary Unit - Special Operations Capable) or a MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) HQ element. Thats great man! I was in you position only a year ago. Now i just have to do senior year before i ship out! I'm going open infantry then applying to recon school. My best advice, start running, puchups, pullups, now. It'll help a ton later on. Stay focused on school and your health. Dont fuck up your opportunities by going off and getting drunk or high with your friends or some garbage because that'll screw your chances of joining. Good luck to ya, man. Semper Fi
You have to buy training bells for discus throwers out of a track and field equipment catalog. Pop off the cap and remove the sand-like filler. Fill with heavier filler, such as fishing weights or buckshot. Recap. In order to change the weight, just alter the volume or density of your filler.
I was a Marine and I occasionally take a stab at a armydog, squid or flyboy. But if I were given a choice to have one hero in my lifetime it would have to be Army Ranger Pat Tillman. There are of course countless others deserving of this title but Tillman was a modern day old school patriot. (I love how politicians throw the word patriot around) Left fame and fortune to fight for his country. It was common place 60 years ago but in todays world Tillman was a rare gem.
The Recon Battalions are divisional recon assets. Many of their personnel are Special Operations qualified, but they aren't to be confused with Force Recon, who are in turn not to be confused with Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC).
thats pobably the smartest or at least most honest comment i've read on youtube in a long time bro, people will argue bout stupid shit while you serve your country, all that really matters is what you do with it, ya know
andyblueyezz reconnaissance marines are a toned down version of the SEALs. ChurchTMaster, I'm shipping to basic (Army though) and the best way to prep for any elite force is to do a lot of push ups, sit ups, and run. Do it everyday no matter what. Then take a good backpack and make it weigh about 25 pounds. March 4 miles with it. Next day do 5 miles. Keep going until you can march 12 miles non-stop. Then increase the weight by 5 pounds each day until it reaches 40 pounds. If you can march 12 miles with 40 pounds, run well, etc. then you should be fine.
I suppose I am just reliving the past. My good friend, Bill Bell, unassed the AO on the roof when Saigon went under. I know that all those who served in that fiasco did it with honor. I served there also as an FO/Interpreter. Many people, some I knew, lost their lives just because they were honorable. I still miss them today.
@tucskin Good luck bro. Oohrah. Im a junior in high school right now and we have a Marine ROTC, I love it. We are going to Parris Island for a week over the summer to see what it's like to be at boot for a week. I can't wait.
I do appreciate your thanks. You are the only person that has ever responded in the way you just did. That is a good thing. I'm sure what I say may not be accurate with how things are now. I served in the late 90's. I also know the Pacific was not solely the Marines. I know Army Soldiers and Navy Sailors were also fighting there and some of the earliest Special Operators conducted operations and didn't lose any men. Plus all the Army pilots kicked a lot of ass.
by tone I mean the emotion tied to the statement and how the person is saying a certain thing. Like when I say "I see." a lot of people would think I am being condescending when in fact I just mean "I understand."
Generally you have to be a Marine for 3-4 years. Ive heard recently you can ask to attend Recon Indoc right off the bat once you enlist but I dont know how well that works out. Training is a bitch. 3 mile run in 18:00, 20 dead hang pull ups, 80 sit ups in 2:00, max pushups, situps, pull ups, scissor kicks, 8 count pushups, and flutter kicks in 2:00, 2 obstacle courses in 2:00, 500 meter swim in 17:00, 10 mile run with 50lbs in 2 hours, 20 mile hump @4-5 mph, 50lb rucksack run 3-4 miles timed.
@Jstfm1 You make your mos decision with your recruiter. This is very important. If you have a date set for bootcamp your mos has possibly already been chosen. Make sure at all cost you're not going in on an open contract. This is what many recruiters try to pass off on unknowing signees. Open contract is where the USMC decides what your mos will be (they fill needed quotas this way). It's often been called the cook mos but grunt (0311) is what used to be mostly chosen when i was in it seemed.
USMCDD89- If PT gear is more important to you...you can have mine. I transitioned over to Recon because I wanted to work with a group of professional, dedicated MEN. Possibly one day you will understand this??? My peers and I have tried to instill this in all Marines who endure this Course and earn the title of Recon Marine. So much for the last three months. Best wishes on all of your future endeavors.
@Jstfm1 If you're going into Combat Engineer try to get stationed overseas. The training opportunities is lightyears ahead of stateside. We did 18 mile full gear humps every wednsday morning had a 20 mile batallion hump once a month on fridays and 3 mile runs daily' Combat Engineer is slang for educated grunt. I am certain all mos's are given equal chances at any transfers (barracks duty special forces etc) thanks to General Al Grays induction of basic warrior training.
I'm saying everything I'm saying from the perspective of a Marine grunt(MOS 0331) that is now totally disabled. I tried the Recon Indoc and didn't make it. I wasn't fortunate enough to get a second shot at it before I got disabled. It is very common for people to have to try getting in to special units multiple times before they finally make it.
the main sof used in the us, they are the toolbox of SOCOM and along with them the SOAR are always there above em for fire support. delta is in when the situation is out of control or a high risk mission. Special forces normally train our allies and do more jungle warfare they are barely at afghanistan they are mostly at the philippines
My high school buddy was one of the very few that go straight into Recon. He was not a normal person considering that when he left for boot camp he could already bench close to 400lbs and had already went through a mini SEAL hell week. If any of you are like that you will probably go straight into BRC and beyond.
@hunterscool111 To be USMC Recon is at least 7 months long minimum if not longer. 3 months of the hardest US basic military training- USMC Boot camp, then 2 months at SOI- School of infantry, then however long Marines stay at RIP waiting for BRC, then 2 months at BRC. And this is not including the other courses once they have time and slots to attend such as jump schools, combat diving, pathfinder, sniper, ranger, etc. etc.
"Well-trained and motivated people will do better with mediocre equipment then mediocre people will do with the best gear in the world" - Patrick A. Rogers. From the article: Strong Men Armed -The Marine Corps 1st Force Reconnaissance Company.
You have FR mistaken for the Recon platoon attached to every Marine Co. FR are trained at Coronado and Little Creek, where SEAL's train. Rangers have recently been attached to SOCOM McDill, so now they are Special ops. As far as I know, "Special Forces" refers specifically to Army 18th Abn. "Green Berets" who have completed JFKSWC and Q course.
once you are done with indoc you will have to deal with being the new guy. we all did that. Training will become your new best hobby. its the schools you get to go to that are the best part of it. the opportunities are huge and can do nothing but benefit you for years to come. these years you spend in Recon will be some of the best years of your life. enjoy them and for those whom take up this challenge i say more power to ya "Semper Fi" now give me 25 and 5! someone will know what that means.
@MonsterMotoxx Well if you wanted to be crew chief for choppers in the marines, you'd have to go into their aviation division and work something out there. You'd have to ask someone thats in there for specifics. As far as the other branches go, I'm not sure. I'm going into the marines in October so I'm trying to research a lil before I go in. Best bet overall is to ask around.
No, no, THANK YOU!!!! finally someone understands, I love the Force recon, they ARE the best fighting force known to man!!!! Marines FTW!!!!! Oorah!!!!
after college im going to get RASP on contract and if i do get that contract there is no way i will quit, only way i fail is if i get dropped out for injury! failure aint a option. good luck!
ok i am pretty sure that you can attend any school you want if you request it and as to which training is harder, there is no way to compare that. Every unit in the military has its own spacial training depending on what there job is.
@graffitibear9 well first youll complete boot, then youll go to a 'Recon screening" where youll have to pass it. Dont know all the details, but if u dont pass it, theyll change your mos there, you got 2-3 tries to get recon training though
Corpsman can try out for the reconnaissance Bn's after they reach the fleet. They get "pipe-lined" for schools. Jump, dive, 18D, BRC/ARS then to the BN. It should be like that for all FRM's.....but thats the corps...
BTW we never almost lost bagdad, we turned it over to army and only left a couple of support battalions behind to assist, me and the rest of the shock troops went home and trained for re-deployment of course
@MrRucknroll Most important thing is mental fortitude. I played lacrosse and now I'm in DEP, and I though PT was going to be easy since I was conditioned for a sport. They will break you, it's just a matter of continuing through the pain. Anyways, talk to your local recruiter about the Delayed Entry Program, and good luck.
@brumajum90 actually they are recon marines opperate in 4-6 man teams and they are elite, much like other spec ops.... with mar-soc marine recon is now sf. Support is support wars couldnt be fought with out and they do a great job celer silenes mortalis
Marine Force Recon (MARSOC now) does special operations mission, they do direct action, special recon, personel recovery, internal forgien defence, train forgien armies so yes they do do special operations. & CAG and DEVGRU along with the Berets arent the only ones that do "Hardcore" special operations missions, theres rangers 24STS MARSOC PJs and sometimes SOAR... how old are you?
Good luck with that, you seem alright, and if you're the same on the field then I'd be glad to have you as my 2nd Lt. Remember that you will be held at a higher standard and from what I heard COs don't get to have as much fun (whatever that may mean) as the Enlisted guys. Oh yeah, and if you don't like paperwork then get used to it; Marines told me those three things so it's not like I'm telling you something I looked up from Black Hawk Down. If being a CO is what u want then go for it!
if they get BRC on contract they are guaranteed a opurtinity to go to recon selection meaning if they pass they are recon marines. PS: im no expert but i love history and try to learn the best i can, and also i will serve after college, so yes for know i am a civilian, and just because you serve doesnt mean you know it all either. but anyway thank you for you're service and be safe.
@joeberger They dont have to wait until after a deployment or two however. Force does look at the top percentage of the class and takes the highest X amount of percentage, im not sure the exact percentage, my memory doesnt serve me that well. But yes you can go force after 1 or 2 deployments but you can go force right out of BRC if you are just that motivated.
personally, i wouldn't do the marches until they order you too in basic. i would just focus on the running, crunches, pull ups (army - push ups), and swim (marine corps) because humps (marches) are bad for ur knees. just my 2 cents...
all the men serving in the DA, SR MSOBs are all recon marines. the way i understand it, the way recon now works is the same way pjs do- same training for conventioanl and special ops, but post training, theyre either assigned to a convetional or SOCOM unit.
This will/should be your itenerary. (Bootcamp 13 weeks)(Leave 10 days)(MCT 29 days if youre an Engineer)(Engineering School Courthouse Bay in Camp Lejune I was there 3 months this is where you choose between East Coast, West Coast or Overseas. They never send you where you wanna go so just pick one) MCT is replaced with SOI if you're infantry, I'm not familiar with this so i cant help. What you want to be sure of is on your paper work what mos is listed. Make sure this is crystal clear.
@BazeBaller1 Tell that to the 1st Recon Marines who didn't even get to do what their soul purpose was in the invasion of OIF, they barely even got a single recon mission, they were in essense a jack of all trades. Their missions were more like day and night raids like the USMC Raiders of WW2, just now they are rolling in humvees'. In the end, their casualty was very minimal and their missions brought on upon them were complete even if it wasn't what they were train for.
I'm looking for some Marines and motivators to run a 10k (6 miles) with the Bear Flag Runner (a Vietnam era Marine), others, and I on April 4th in Danville CA. Chances are most of you will not be Northern Cali, during this time, but if you are, it would be my honor for you to join us. For more info, please google - Hats Off America or Bear Flag Runner. For all those that serve, thank you for your service! Semper Fidelis
ya if i do im goin enlisted.like i said its just another option that im lookin at but im still goin through college first either way. but plz if you are thinkin of joining then dont just listen to what the recruiters have to say. ask anyone and everyone who has ever done anything in the marine corps. the recruiters dont tell you everything its there job. im talkin to an ex-colone and he says dont just listen to the recruiters. just some advice and good luck
Some army ranger dudes came into the Disbo office back in Horno 1988. They started to walk out till the Gunner asked them what they needed. Their polite leader advised money. The Gunner told them they were in the right place. Their leader told the Gunner he thought we were all line company Marines by our builds and squared away demeanors. LOL, we trained all the time, Marine Corps training and personal training. Shoot, Semper Fi.
@Eagle9294 thanks man the army has some of the best marksman iv met only the kids debate whos better but truthfully US military train hard and thats why we get more service members that come back alive
I didn't mean to sound like I thought it was all about the Marines. The military is a combined force and all service-members are equally important. You aren't the only one that has lots to learn. Everyone has things to learn. It's hard to always know the tone of what is being said online. For me at least.
@SergeantKush Go to military.com and look at the workouts they have on there. There are workouts for every branch and spec ops training stuff. I'll be leaving for Paris Island in october. I'm 41 points shy of getting the min score to try out for these guys. For those that dont know, they take the scores from a PFT (physical fitness test) which is a max of 300 points, the min score they'll take is 285. Fail it and you're out for another year.
@joeberger I believe we both know what he meant, he meant Force Recon went to MSOB in MarSOC. "Well train and motivated people will do better with mediocre equipment the mediocre people with do with the best gear in the world." A quote Patrick A. Rogers from Strong Men Armed - 1st Force Recon Co.
Well I heard that they changed the rules recently. I only heard that recruits can request to go to Recon Indoc right away but every article Ive read says that there is no direct route to becoming a Recon Marine and that you have to wait the 3-4 years. It used to be that you had to be at least a Lance Corporal before you could try out to become a Recon Marine. But like I said I only heard that you can request Indoc right away. I doubt its true though cause everything Ive read says otherwise.
I was not Recon, but an 0311. I miss the USMC

from what i've heard. its a very honorable job but it is a greta challenge to be recturited as a marine recon.
Ahh the memories. I was with Bravo Co., 1st Recon Bn, back in the early-mid 80s. Good times.

The best trained units during WW2 were the Jedburghs, FSSF, and the OSS Recon unit. The British SAS had a hand in training two of those three units.

Thank you Marines, Air Force, Navy, Army ❤️
Absolutely my favorite
God bless all of you❤️🇺🇸
Generally you have to be a Marine for 3-4 years.
OOHRAH!!! haha My Marine is deployed right now. Thank you for your service.
It is very common for people to have to try getting in to special units multiple times before they finally make it.
and marine recon recruiting is a living hell.
the main sof used in the us, they are the toolbox of SOCOM and along with them the SOAR are always there above em for fire support. delta is in when the situation is out of control or a high risk mission.
@Jp4baseball Ranger school isn't a requirement for Recon, however, when there is time and slots available, Marines are able to attend.
Rogers.
From the article: Strong Men Armed -The Marine Corps 1st Force Reconnaissance Company.
if you aren't a Marine you can be proud to stand behind them, and if you aren't proud enough to do that, then stand in front of them.
Best bet overall is to ask around.
this is perhaps the only comment that isnt 60 lines long
No, no, THANK YOU!!!! finally someone understands, I love the Force recon, they ARE the best fighting force known to man!!!! Marines FTW!!!!! Oorah!!!!
after college im going to get RASP on contract and if i do get that contract there is no way i will quit, only way i fail is if i get dropped out for injury! failure aint a option. good luck!
@UGADTdawg71 They are Marine Special Operations, like Navy Seals, Army SF and Delta and Rangers
ok i am pretty sure that you can attend any school you want if you request it and as to which training is harder, there is no way to compare that. Every unit in the military has its own spacial training depending on what there job is.
I wish my dad was as proud as you are of your son my parents say i failed them because i want to join the marines
Support is support wars couldnt be fought with out and they do a great job celer silenes mortalis
epic music+epic video=SUPER EPIC VIDEO 5 stars man nice job!
But yes you can go force after 1 or 2 deployments but you can go force right out of BRC if you are just that motivated.
this video is awesome the beginning was a little cheesy and very obvious that it was made by an amateur but then it got really awesome
personally, i wouldn't do the marches until they order you too in basic. i would just focus on the running, crunches, pull ups (army - push ups), and swim (marine corps) because humps (marches) are bad for ur knees. just my 2 cents...
I was in the process of join the USMC but then had to get surgery on both knees.... Now, I'm just pissed and want to join even more. Damn.
all the men serving in the DA, SR MSOBs are all recon marines. the way i understand it, the way recon now works is the same way pjs do- same training for conventioanl and special ops, but post training, theyre either assigned to a convetional or SOCOM unit.
We both do alot of training. But most of what happens around MARSOC is never heard about by anyone on the outside.
I've met some of the Recon guys from MARSOC, they're some crazy MoFo's man. I can't wait to head to the fleet and train with some :]
Thank you Curt, Jeff and all who served 💋
@kawaishi1
you can go thru ranger school and then become SF, but not both at the same time.
@Rimious depends on the job really, navy seals for demolition and exraction, Recon for well, recon obviously and elimination.
@amadeus1186 im DEP'd in as well. I leave 6 June 2011. Counting down the days untill I start off as 0300!!
ya if i do im goin enlisted.like i said its just another option that im lookin at but im still goin through college first either way. but plz if you are thinkin of joining then dont just listen to what the recruiters have to say. ask anyone and everyone who has ever done anything in the marine corps. the recruiters dont tell you everything its there job. im talkin to an ex-colone and he says dont just listen to the recruiters. just some advice and good luck
I am Viet. My uncle is from Saigon and is part of Force Recon.
Shoot, Semper Fi.
thats badassed. Thank God for the troops and especially for the Marines!
At 2:13 is Rudy Reyes from Generation kill and Apocalypse Man.
@Eagle9294 thanks man the army has some of the best marksman iv met only the kids debate whos better but truthfully US military train hard and thats why we get more service members that come back alive
thats cuz we do the seal course during the amphib training portion in NAB coronado
I didn't mean to sound like I thought it was all about the Marines. The military is a combined force and all service-members are equally important.
You aren't the only one that has lots to learn. Everyone has things to learn. It's hard to always know the tone of what is being said online. For me at least.
@SergeantKush
Go to military.com and look at the workouts they have on there.
Rogers from Strong Men Armed - 1st Force Recon Co.
i'm joining Canadian forces. Marines are awesome though wish we had em here.
