  • Australia's environment is in a shocking state and faces further decline from amplifying threats, according to an anticipated report.
The survey of Australia's ecological systems - conducted every five years - found widespread abrupt changes.
These can be blamed on climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and mining, it said.
Australia has vowed to cut carbon emissions by 43% on 2005 levels by 2030.

The 2019 to 2020 Australian wildfire still sticks vividly in my mind as I’m sure it does everyone else’s. Covid quickly took over the news for the whole world and rightly so, but what happened in Australia should’ve been enough to bring real change. And yet our leaders still want to drag their feet, even with what is happening in Ukraine. They are always too slow to act, never willing to make proper big compromises and this is the end result. We need to bring about systemic change and it needs to have happened yesterday.

She's being misleading. It's the deforestation that has caused this. When they deforested most of the Island the weather patterns completely changed and the place turned into mostly desert. No trees=no rain
Just 50% of Australia’s forests and bushlands remain intact compared with pre-European arrival. The other 50% has been either permanently destroyed and replaced with another land use or is classed as degraded forests and bushlands-most of which was previously cleared but now regrowing vegetation of different ages.
Australia has lost 27% of our rainforest, 19% of open forest, 11% of woodland forest and 28% of mallee forest since 1750.
Australia is the worst offending country in the world for mammal extinctions.
Fifty-five wildlife species plus 37 plant species have gone extinct in Australia.
The greatest threat to koalas in Queensland and New South Wales is habitat loss.

Our 2019 analysis found that 73% of all deforestation and land clearing in Queensland is linked to beef production.
Between 2018 and 2019, over 92,718 hectares of koala habitat was cleared in Queensland in just one year. And around 73,285ha of that-or a whopping 80%-was destroyed for beef production.
Carbon emissions released by land clearing across Australia are equivalent to about a third of the total emissions released by all of the coal-fired power stations in the country. Once native forest logging emissions are included, this is equivalent to at least half the carbon pollution of all Australian coal-fired power stations.
Globally, new international agreements and corporate commitments to deforestation-free commodity supply chains will place increasing demand on Australia’s soft commodity sectors to transition to sustainable practices.

Because our government is captured by the fossil fuel industry plus the major fossil fuel companies feed money directly into politicians hands as well as the fact they have infiltrated the majority of Australian media as well as our very own science foundation CSIRO which resulted in hundreds of professional climate scientists being fired as well as them being silenced on the matter and the heads of the scientific board were replaced by fossil fuel lobbyists so dodgy reports like the one about fracking being good to try and create scepticism against scientists so they can still continue to pump out emissions without any penalties. These fossil fuel companies also pay fuck all taxes while the rest of us continue to get rises in taxes and worst part is our government subsidises the fossil fuel company at a rate of 11 million dollars a minute which could be better spent on renewables as well as making electric cars affordable but they won't because they love the enormous wealth they get but we end up not getting a single penny of that money which leaves us worse off than if we were to move towards green energy. @DV8 *** that might be a projected figure that fails to take account of the effects of global warming. Famine pestilence and war will significantly reduce the number who survive. Large areas of the mid latitudes will become uninhabitable for humans, or any life, in the next few years.
The collapse of society in the traditional temperate latitudes, will likely reduce medicine and healthcare back to the state of the dark ages. Life expectancy will drop significantly as infant mortality rises. The collapse in the size of the human population is the inevitable consequence of excessive use of resources on a planet where they are finite. Scientists have been modeling such dramatic population decline in other species for years. Our fate is little different to bottled yeast cells that drowned in their own excrement, or starve when their sugar supply is exhausted.

There is no profit to be made from a dead planet. Governments should be using their powers to ensure no one can profit from a dying planet.
Ultimately, such measures will result from the breakdown of society and it's laws. Better if such measures happen earlier, when the elimination of the profit motive might save the planet. Certainly the reversal of the concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people should be the objective.

America needs to get it's own house in order first and it has still got quite a way to go on that. Realistically, while tackling these issues together is important, it is on every nation to sort out their own affairs as enviromental impact and climate change doesn't respect international borders. No matter what any one nation does, it won't help much if not enough other nations are pulling their weight.
It also requires accepting things change. There were probably quite a few industries such as horse breeding that were impacted by the advent of the automobile but accepting that older industries and technologies lose value as we develop is important. Big Oil simply isn't going to remain as profitable as it has been if we make the changes we need to. That requires those companies to either shrink or change into not being Oil companies anymore.

What only a few truly realise is, that even though it is warm in the freezer and getting warmer, the melting ice is acting as a buffer and keeps everything from totally collapsing.

Decades from now I don't want to have to look back at the wildfires we have today and be filled with regret for failing to fix it.

If we still manage to exist decades from now, we will be looking back to today and reminiscing how relatively few wildfires there were. We will also be looking back at history to see how all the older generations of the past, whom are all dead and won't see the full consequences, failed to take any meaningful action.

Can't appeciate the lack of study placed here, it was recently shown, the barrier reef is in recovery and is better than it was 6 years ago, yes climate change is real but they shouldn't be using old news as a descripter to the crisis when that fact has changed.
